I have a black and decker 2A mounted on my plow truck. I only do a few driveways in the neighborhood so the battery doesn’t always keep up so I plug it in when done. I like it because it has auto shutoff not like most of the cheaper battery tenders. In my shed where I store toys like snowmobile,atvs and mower I have a small solar panel wired to a terminal strip where I drop through a diode to each battery. The diode prevents one battery draining to another.
use the black decker on my summer car and farm tractor both are dependable . had them for 7 years sure its lower voltage but were talking about a vehicle that is being stored not jump starting it .
Informative video, something to note in addition: longevity and location, these might factor in for some folks. I've had all three and they all got the job done in a heated/cooled garage. None of these are weather proof and from what I've experienced none of these are meant to be outside even when protected from the rain/snow. I lost 2-Schumacher tenders within 3 months in our barn (that is waterproof) charging tractor and mower. Very disappointing and an expensive lesson. Thanks for posting the video, good info/advise.
To the Black+Decker BM3M's defense it is designed to be permanently mounted under the hood as there mounting holes that the other chargers do not have. Rated at 1.2A it actually charges at 1.4A(blinking green LED) and maintains the battery at 300-400mA when completely charged (solid green LED). The physical 6V/12V switch is actually a good feature not relying on the internal circuitry to decide !
E Tow thank you so much for the comment. I did not know that it was made to be mounted to the car. I can’t tell you that I am still using it but it’s not my favorite one. The Schumachers have been faster and much more reliable.

Looks as if the link to the Stanley product is to a different product, one that no longer includes the cigarette lighter mentioned in this exceptionally helpful and informative video.
Using 4 B&D maintainers and 2 of them are almost 10 years old. One is mounted in the truck because it sets for long spells. It's a maintainer and not a charger so the .5 amp is not an issue. Can't get a Standly on Amazon. . . I use one for a deep cycle Battery and inverter for a emergency power in the house, One on the Generator . another is mounted in the truck and one in the mower shed to keep the mower charged over the winter. Ans because they are working so well over time and multi uses. I have another on order to maintain a smaller battery back up for lighting in another building. The longest one in use is going on 5 year of being plugged in. .
What it would it be better is talk about charge, desulfator, trickle charger and maintain the battery. If we talk about 3 chargers than do the same for a 12 volt battery then price should be the go to. Why pay more but not all the chargers do the same like different things i mention before. Good video anyway.
Black and Decker was 1.2 amp when I had one. Maybe they updated it. I would go with a Schumacher SP3. Has all the connection types and 3 amp output. I have a review of it on my channel.
What people may not realize is that even a large battery (such as 12V 100Ah) should only draw about 0.5 watts so about 40mA (0.04 A) to maintain it when it is completely charged. Also, I doubt the 2A max charger would be much faster than the 1.5A max charger. Reason being the 2A charger will eventually taper down to 1.5A and at that point, the 1.5A charger might still be at 1.5A, so it is only the time between 2A and 1.5A that the "2A" charger would get a "lead". After that, the "lead" will likely not increase. If you plan on topping your car battery off overnight, then I suspect any of these 3 charger/maintainers (and the Noco Genius G750 that this review missed), would all suffice.
I bought the Stanley last year and didn't even know it had the magnet built into it, so I like to plug it in and then leave the Stanley up on top of the hood where I can see that's plugged into the car so I don't drive off
I have the stanly easy to hook up and light weight. also a money saver . I would not recommend letting Walmart or others charge your 12 volt battery in fact last time Walmart charged the battery they had a ticket that said battery good the same battery I carried to a auto zone they said bad and then I carried it back to Walmart after they said I could t bring it back to them .so I did tit undercover this time they said it was bad. I now use the stanly it works great.
To prolong battery recycle life, Our engineers of battery charger factory will calcualte time about full charging. such as, 100ah battery, advise 10 hours at leat for charging, so you should choose chager with the biggest 10Amp , or smaller than 10Amp. If you choose 20Amp charger, charging speed is very quick, However, battery life will also be shorten quickly.
THE STANLEY WORKED FOR ME fter charging for 8 hrs then 6 hrs the yellow light still never went out, BUT THE BATTERY WAS CHARGED AND THE TRUCK CRANKED, I KNOW ITS ONLY A 1 AMP BUT IT WORKS JUST AS GOOD AS THE 60.00 AND 100.00 DOLLAR CHARGERS. I have a NOCO .75 amp. I thought that was low but it does the job. I have it hardwired to my battery. My question is can I leave everything connected to car while charging and maintaining
As as maintainer yes, current draw of a locked car with alarm on is up to 0.1 amp. Mine actually activates at 0.1 and sleeps at 0.02. so yes even a 250 mAh tender can mainten the battery provided it was fully charged or close to fully charged in the beginning.
I may be wrong, and that's fine if you want to use them, but the cigarette lighter port is a bad idea. I don't want to push any amperage through my cars electronics. It is at least going through a fused circuit so In my opinion you could hurt some accessories with that option and I'd just say disconnect the battery and charge it with the clamps.
Cody Watson most cars I agree with you but the battery on my Viper is behind the driver side rear wheel and you have to take the wheel off and the tray out to get to the battery. This is the only car that I use the cigarette port. I have been using it for over 10 years and so far it has worked. It’s not my favorite method but it works. The new 2020 vette comes with a charger from the factory that uses this method as well.

As I use the car about 3 times per week, after being clamped to the car battery, isn't it that the hood will be left open? I am sure you can tell I am very novice.
@@optimalwin8327 no worries. If you are using the clamps than you will have to open the hood. You can leave it up or connect the charger and then let the hood down, not completely shut as the power wire will need to come out.

The accessory battery on my 2018 hybrid Camry needs to be jumped each day before I can start the car. Last time it was jumped ( yesterday), I drove the car on the highway for 30-40 minutes. I then turned off the car for between 30-60 minutes. It had no trouble restarting so I could drive home. But this evening when I tried to start the car, it wouldn’t start. I need to drive the car in the morning, so I’ll have to jump it again before I can drive. I’d like your opinion; Should I buy a new accessory battery? Should I also get a battery minder?
The major down falls with all these so called "smart" chargers is that they are useless if your battery fall under less than 9V-11V. The charger will show that your battery is defective and not charge/maintain. So if you were to have just one charger, then the good old fashion heavy linear dumb charger is still the best choice and the most versatile !
I have seen smart chargers released since 2014 that can charge the battery with voltage as low as 3V and more recently ones that can charge down as low as 1V or less.. You can get these chargers in different Amp ouputs 1 1.5, 2, 5, 10 maybe even higher. Some of these smart chargers also come with the ability to desulfate the batteries as well.

We hooked up the Schumacher last year and left for 4 months.........when we came back it wasn't on & the battery was dead. Could a power surge have caused the maintainer to disconnect and should have been reset?
Hello and great question. Most of the time if the power goes off, when it comes back on the battery maintainer will just come back on as well. If you have a power surge then the maintainer could have been damaged and that would cause the issue you are speaking of. you can disconnect the battery but that is not needed. I have cars that are on these year round and they are all connected.

That’s a great question. So Amps/Hour (ah) shows how many amps an hour that charger can send. So the one that can send 200, Theoretically can recharge a battery quicker.

Frustrating question for you - I bought the 1.5 amp Stanley and had it on a 12 volt large deep cycle. Had it on for 5 days and the light was still blinking. Is this stanley a dud. You would think after 5 days it would be done!!??
That’s a great question. It all depends on how low the battery was. I have had it flash for days before but never 5 days. Do you have another vehicle that you could test it on?
So do these sense when battery drops below a certain voltage and then charge the battery and then stop at a certain voltage ? Etc. Is this the same as a twinkle charger ? Thanks
paul dow you are correct. These have the tech build into them to stop and maintain a certain voltage. Almost all are this way now. The old trickle chargers used to keep adding even if the battery was full.
Help? I've had this black and decker BM3B one on my truck for a week and today the truck was hard to start. I'm wondering if the charger is bad. I couldn't see a spark when touching one of the charger's clips to the battery terminal so I removed the battery clips and tried to spark them together and nada. is the 'maintenance voltage that the thing puts out not strong enough to see that spark or what ya think? The the big green light on the unit is flashing. Ideas? Thanks
Kevin S. They should not spark when touched together or to the battery. I would get a volt meter and check the voltage on the battery. Then hook up the battery maintainer and check it again to see if the voltage has gone up. Might be a bad battery.

I need help, i have a new bike but left it alone for some time and now it wont start, seems like the battery is dead. I bought one of these chargers and i was able to turn my bike back on but if i turn it off and try to turn it on it won't. Is there a way to know if the battery just wont work anymore? I hardly used it. Someone told me to leave it runing and i did and worked for like 5 minutes after that it would not turn back on, any help would be appreciated.
TheUnknown it sounds like your battery is no longer holding a charge. I would take the battery to Advance and have them run a battery diagnostic on it. It’s a free service and it will tell you if you can save the battery or it needs to be replaced.
Informative, Thank You. I have a Prius (Hybrid) can I plug maintainer into lighter? or directly to battery, The owners manual say's to boost the battery do not boost directly to battery (which is in rear) but to connect it to terminal under hood. Which do you think is my best option. Thanks
For a battery maintainer, I have found that it is always better to connect directly to the battery. However and some cars were the battery is very hard to get to I do use the cigarette lighter adapter and it has worked very well.

@@optimalwin8327 great questions. I’m going to try to answer these as best I can. 1. Reverse connection is if you were to accidentally hook up the positive to the negative. It will detect that you made a mistake and won’t cause a short. 2. You can pick. The 8amp is if your battery was already dead and you needed to charge it quicker. For a battery that is charged you would select 2amp. 3. You can use an extension cord if needed. 4. You are correct. It will automatically do this for you. 5. This just means you don’t have to worry about it shorting out and causing damage to your battery. 6. It most likely will show a red error light.

John - My fishing electric trolling motor is a 24v system. Do I need two 12v chargers, and then disconnect the series to charge them independently? One 12v charger and leave the series connected, and it will charge both? Thanks!
@steve fletcher - some 12V chargers will allow you to charge a 24V series battery bank simply by connecting one 12V charger to each 12V subbank withOUT having to break the 24V series connection. To be safe, ask the battery manufacturer or you can check it yourself.

Damien Ralentass this is a great question. I ended up buy a jump pack and using the maintainer in conjunction. So I leave the vehicles on the maintainer but if I forget and need to jump one I can use the jump pack. The jump pack also is very portable and can charge usb items. So it’s a win win.
John I am new at this. I bought the Stanley to put on my Honda Accord battery when I am gone on long RV trips (six to eight weeks) so I do not come home to a dead battery. Is it ok to have the battery plugged into the Stanley for that length of time? Thanks
Jack Jensen absolutely. I leave mine plugged up for months at a time. The longest i have left them on a cat is about 6 months. The nice thing about these trickle chargers is they stop charging when they hit the correct voltage.

I found a company called Associated Equipment that does chargers big and small that sells a tender/charger. it is considerably more expensive but they say everything is 100% sourced stateside. I am sick of Chinaesium, and intend to speak with my wallet as such. I think I can justify the extra cost anyway as I just spent 300+ on two new East Penn AGM batteries for my 2500HD. Brett Mackey you are correct. The ones that I mentioned in this video have sensors that will stop charging once it’s at the correct voltage. Then as the battery sits they will come on to keep the charge. :) I have all of mine on these year round.

The Black+Decker BM3M would be my choice. Parasitic leaks from your car's alarm system will drain the battery within 2-3 weeks if unattended leaving you stranded.
The intro shows some promise with mention of sophisticated circuitry to protect, monitor, and maintain the battery -- as well as the possible differences between an $80 unit and one for $5.99. He doesn't touch on that at all, and leaps to "for my cars I've kind of gone middle of the road." Without any real commentary on electrical function this is a kind of long superficial review of $20 units, and which ones have which leads, connections, and mounts. It's not at all about "choosing the right battery maintainer."
richieb74 To keep the charge and maintain it absolutely, if your battery is completely dead and you’re trying to use this as a charger then it will struggle.
1.5A is more than enough to maintain and lightly charge a 12V car battery. Most battery maintainers costing much more only charge/maintains at 0.750A ! The point here is that you don't want an over powerful charger/maintainer on an unattended battery that is continously plugged into your battery !

Dwight Dale should work fine as long as the batteries are not completely drained. Around 8 hours on a trickle charger will give you enough to start. For a job like this I would use a car starter jump pack. It will allow you to start the car but wouldn’t charge the batteries.
Is there a similar device that will keep a battery charged w/o having to plug the device into a wall outlet? I don't have a garage & don't think my landlord will allow me to keep the battery charged inside my house; she will view it as a fire hazard.
Hi John, Really enjoyed your video comparaison. I had to by a Battery Charger for my Massey-Ferguson GC2300 equipped with a snow blower and for the 1st time this winter, it refused to start. I had a older model battery charger which I used for one day and it dit the job. However, I just purchased a Schumacher 3A for $52.00 CDN dollars and I am please, once I seen your video, that I bought this model. It also has a cigarette adapter. Question: I have a power boat with two batteries, with an A/B switch. Can I also use it in the summer time, for instance, to charge battery A and then, battery B? Crimtide I think it all comes down to preference. I used a Deltran about 10 years ago and it did the same as the ones I use now. The warranty is nice because they can go bad after years of use.

I, too, was a bit disappointed with this review. I presently have a couple of Battery Tender brand maintainers and need a third unit now and was looking for a comparison of how these devices maintain batteries. I searched for "best battery maintainers" and was looking for more in-depth information.
So where is the actual testing? I have not found one single actual test between any of the big brands. Just price and advertising lol. I can’t believe no one has hooked up these things to a scope and actually tested these things

I spent most of my career as a mechanic and still never fully understood the science behind this old technology lol. Now that I’m obsessed i find it really hard to believe no one has actually tested any of these products.

Vincent Ng so the Bentley has a battery charging port in the trunk. If you are looking in the truck it’s on the left wall. Ctek is the brand that came with it. It’s a little more expensive but if you are only buying one, it’s not that bad.

First of all, there is only ONE brand that is called BATTERY TENDER, the others are battery maintainers. If you are going to talk about Deltran Battery Tenders, you should at least have one on the table. And you completely overlooked CTEK, a leading brand of smart chargers/battery maintainers. The title of your program is wrong, you never displayed a real Battery Tender which by the way comes in many amperages, which include 1.25 amp, 3 amp, 4 amp and 5 amp. Moreover, your title should have included the fact that you are really talking about low to mid cost smart chargers.
I am in the clear. I complied with all of their demands and their lawyer reviewed the video to make sure that it met every criteria. So for now everything is good to go. Thank you for asking.

My favorite budget friendly brand is still the Schumacher as it has the most versatility and ease of use. Any of the three will keep you battery exactly where you need it. What happened to the NOCO Genius G750? What kind of 3/4 ass review is this? Also your description states "Selecting the right battery maintainer is easy when you have all the facts!". What about power consumption? You didn't tell me that fact. If I leave a battery on the tender almost 24/7, I want to know how much power it is consuming because that will add up. This review falls short. Downvoted.

I have a black and decker 2A mounted on my plow truck. I only do a few driveways in the neighborhood so the battery doesn’t always keep up so I plug it in when done. I like it because it has auto shutoff not like most of the cheaper battery tenders. In my shed where I store toys like snowmobile,atvs and mower I have a small solar panel wired to a terminal strip where I drop through a diode to each battery. The diode prevents one battery draining to another.
use the black decker on my summer car and farm tractor both are dependable . had them for 7 years sure its lower voltage but were talking about a vehicle that is being stored not jump starting it .
Informative video, something to note in addition: longevity and location, these might factor in for some folks. I've had all three and they all got the job done in a heated/cooled garage. None of these are weather proof and from what I've experienced none of these are meant to be outside even when protected from the rain/snow. I lost 2-Schumacher tenders within 3 months in our barn (that is waterproof) charging tractor and mower. Very disappointing and an expensive lesson. Thanks for posting the video, good info/advise.

To the Black+Decker BM3M's defense it is designed to be permanently mounted under the hood as there mounting holes that the other chargers do not have. Rated at 1.2A it actually charges at 1.4A(blinking green LED) and maintains the battery at 300-400mA when completely charged (solid green LED). The physical 6V/12V switch is actually a good feature not relying on the internal circuitry to decide !

Using 4 B&D maintainers and 2 of them are almost 10 years old. One is mounted in the truck because it sets for long spells. It's a maintainer and not a charger so the .5 amp is not an issue. Can't get a Standly on Amazon. . . I use one for a deep cycle Battery and inverter for a emergency power in the house, One on the Generator . another is mounted in the truck and one in the mower shed to keep the mower charged over the winter. Ans because they are working so well over time and multi uses. I have another on order to maintain a smaller battery back up for lighting in another building. The longest one in use is going on 5 year of being plugged in. .

When it comes to batteries, charging "low and slow" ( low amps, takes longer) will make your batteries last longer.
I agree. When maintaining the lower amps work best. However if your battery is low then it takes longer to get it back on track.

What it would it be better is talk about charge, desulfator, trickle charger and maintain the battery. If we talk about 3 chargers than do the same for a 12 volt battery then price should be the go to. Why pay more but not all the chargers do the same like different things i mention before.

Black and Decker was 1.2 amp when I had one. Maybe they updated it. I would go with a Schumacher SP3. Has all the connection types and 3 amp output. I have a review of it on my channel.

What people may not realize is that even a large battery (such as 12V 100Ah) should only draw about 0.5 watts so about 40mA (0.04 A) to maintain it when it is completely charged. Also, I doubt the 2A max charger would be much faster than the 1.5A max charger. Reason being the 2A charger will eventually taper down to 1.5A and at that point, the 1.5A charger might still be at 1.5A, so it is only the time between 2A and 1.5A that the "2A" charger would get a "lead". After that, the "lead" will likely not increase. If you plan on topping your car battery off overnight, then I suspect any of these 3 charger/maintainers (and the Noco Genius G750 that this review missed), would all suffice.

I bought the Stanley last year and didn't even know it had the magnet built into it, so I like to plug it in and then leave the Stanley up on top of the hood where I can see that's plugged into the car so I don't drive off
I have the stanly easy to hook up and light weight. also a money saver . I would not recommend letting Walmart or others charge your 12 volt battery in fact last time Walmart charged the battery they had a ticket that said battery good the same battery I carried to a auto zone they said bad and then I carried it back to Walmart after they said I could t bring it back to them .so I did tit undercover this time they said it was bad. I now use the stanly it works great.

To prolong battery recycle life, Our engineers of battery charger factory will calcualte time about full charging. such as, 100ah battery, advise 10 hours at leat for charging, so you should choose chager with the biggest 10Amp , or smaller than 10Amp. I have a NOCO .75 amp. I thought that was low but it does the job. I have it hardwired to my battery. My question is can I leave everything connected to car while charging and maintaining
As as maintainer yes, current draw of a locked car with alarm on is up to 0.1 amp. Mine actually activates at 0.1 and sleeps at 0.02. so yes even a 250 mAh tender can mainten the battery provided it was fully charged or close to fully charged in the beginning.

Not necessarily. Perhaps a slight overcharge is good to produce heat and help melt the ice away. There is such a thing as charging too slowly.
I don’t get the cigarette lighter adapter unless the car is running. What am I missing?
Some vehicles have hard to reach batteries. In those cases you can use to the cig adapter to keep your battery charged.
I may be wrong, and that's fine if you want to use them, but the cigarette lighter port is a bad idea. I don't want to push any amperage through my cars electronics. It is at least going through a fused circuit so In my opinion you could hurt some accessories with that option and I'd just say disconnect the battery and charge it with the clamps.
Cody Watson most cars I agree with you but the battery on my Viper is behind the driver side rear wheel and you have to take the wheel off and the tray out to get to the battery. This is the only car that I use the cigarette port. I have been using it for over 10 years and so far it has worked. It’s not my favorite method but it works. The new 2020 vette comes with a charger from the factory that uses this method as well.

As I use the car about 3 times per week, after being clamped to the car battery, isn't it that the hood will be left open? I am sure you can tell I am very novice.
@@optimalwin8327 no worries. If you are using the clamps than you will have to open the hood. You can leave it up or connect the charger and then let the hood down, not completely shut as the power wire will need to come out.

The accessory battery on my 2018 hybrid Camry needs to be jumped each day before I can start the car. Last time it was jumped ( yesterday), I drove the car on the highway for 30-40 minutes. I then turned off the car for between 30-60 minutes. It had no trouble restarting so I could drive home. But this evening when I tried to start the car, it wouldn’t start. I need to drive the car in the morning, so I’ll have to jump it again before I can drive. I’d like your opinion;
Should I buy a new accessory battery? Should I also get a battery minder?
The major down falls with all these so called "smart" chargers is that they are useless if your battery fall under less than 9V-11V. The charger will show that your battery is defective and not charge/maintain. So if you were to have just one charger, then the good old fashion heavy linear dumb charger is still the best choice and the most versatile !

I have seen smart chargers released since 2014 that can charge the battery with voltage as low as 3V and more recently ones that can charge down as low as 1V or less.. You can get these chargers in different Amp ouputs 1 1.5, 2, 5, 10 maybe even higher. Some of these smart chargers also come with the ability to desulfate the batteries as well.
Some smart-ones has Supply mode to fire up near death batteries 👀
You can parallel a good charged battery to your discharged one, and your 'smart' charger will then go ahead and charge it

We hooked up the Schumacher last year and left for 4 months.........when we came back it wasn't on & the battery was dead. Could a power surge have caused the maintainer to disconnect and should have been reset?

Hello and great question. Most of the time if the power goes off, when it comes back on the battery maintainer will just come back on as well. If you have a power surge then the maintainer could have been damaged and that would cause the issue you are speaking of. you can disconnect the battery but that is not needed. I have cars that are on these year round and they are all connected.

That’s a great question. So Amps/Hour (ah) shows how many amps an hour that charger can send. So the one that can send 200, Theoretically can recharge a battery quicker.

Frustrating question for you - I bought the 1.5 amp Stanley and had it on a 12 volt large deep cycle. Had it on for 5 days and the light was still blinking. Is this stanley a dud. You would think after 5 days it would be done!!??
That’s a great question. It all depends on how low the battery was. I have had it flash for days before but never 5 days. Do you have another vehicle that you could test it on?
So do these sense when battery drops below a certain voltage and then charge the battery and then stop at a certain voltage ? Etc.

paul dow you are correct. These have the tech build into them to stop and maintain a certain voltage. Almost all are this way now. The old trickle chargers used to keep adding even if the battery was full.

Help? I've had this black and decker BM3B one on my truck for a week and today the truck was hard to start. I'm wondering if the charger is bad. I couldn't see a spark when touching one of the charger's clips to the battery terminal so I removed the battery clips and tried to spark them together and nada. is the 'maintenance voltage that the thing puts out not strong enough to see that spark or what ya think? The the big green light on the unit is flashing. Ideas? Thanks
Kevin S. They should not spark when touched together or to the battery. I would get a volt meter and check the voltage on the battery. Then hook up the battery maintainer and check it again to see if the voltage has gone up. Might be a bad battery.

I need help, i have a new bike but left it alone for some time and now it wont start, seems like the battery is dead. I bought one of these chargers and i was able to turn my bike back on but if i turn it off and try to turn it on it won't. Is there a way to know if the battery just wont work anymore? TheUnknown it sounds like your battery is no longer holding a charge. I would take the battery to Advance and have them run a battery diagnostic on it. It’s a free service and it will tell you if you can save the battery or it needs to be replaced.
I store my RV in an outside locked lot. I wanted something to keep the battery charged. Since there is no electricity there, this won't help, right?

For a battery maintainer, I have found that it is always better to connect directly to the battery. However and some cars were the battery is very hard to get to I do use the cigarette lighter adapter and it has worked very well.

Background Information: Due to Covid-19, I have been working from home since March 2020. I suspect because of this reason, this is my first time that my SUV car battery died on me back in Aug 2020 when it was only about 3 years old - my past mini van battery lasted about 10 years. I heard about car smart battery maintainer as a solution. My SUV is a GMC Terrain.
I like your recommendation for many reasons (i.e. Stanley FATMAX BC8S Fully Automatic 8A 12V Battery Charger/Maintainer with Cable Clamps - Black, 8 Amp). However, I have the following questions if you don't mind answering.
(1) What is the "Reverse Connection" feature for / mean?
(2) Though it label this model is an "*8 AMP CHARGER", am I right that this device allow me to select "2A" for car battery maintenance purpose?
(3) I have looked all over for the length of the electrical cord that plug into the wall outlet of my garage and could not find this information. Assuming the electrical cord that come with the package is not long enough, is it safe to use and extension cord to solve the problem?
(4) "....switching to float mode monitoring": am I right to understand this feature mean it will continuously monitor battery level and automatically recharge the battery when it drop below "full" level?

@@optimalwin8327 great questions. I’m going to try to answer these as best I can.
1. Reverse connection is if you were to accidentally hook up the positive to the negative. It will detect that you made a mistake and won’t cause a short.
2. You can pick. The 8amp is if your battery was already dead and you needed to charge it quicker. For a battery that is charged you would select 2amp.
3. You can use an extension cord if needed.
4. You are correct. It will automatically do this for you.
5. This just means you don’t have to worry about it shorting out and causing damage to your battery.
6. It most likely will show a red error light.

Hello Steve, That is the way that I would do it. I don't think they would be powerful enough to charge they in tandem.
@steve fletcher - some 12V chargers will allow you to charge a 24V series battery bank simply by connecting one 12V charger to each 12V subbank withOUT having to break the 24V series connection. To be safe, ask the battery manufacturer or you can check it yourself.

Damien Ralentass this is a great question. I ended up buy a jump pack and using the maintainer in conjunction. So I leave the vehicles on the maintainer but if I forget and need to jump one I can use the jump pack. The jump pack also is very portable and can charge usb items. So it’s a win win.

John I am new at this. I bought the Stanley to put on my Honda Accord battery when I am gone on long RV trips (six to eight weeks) so I do not come home to a dead battery. Is it ok to have the battery plugged into the Stanley for that length of time? Thanks
Jack Jensen absolutely. I leave mine plugged up for months at a time. The longest i have left them on a cat is about 6 months. The nice thing about these trickle chargers is they stop charging when they hit the correct voltage.

I found a company called Associated Equipment that does chargers big and small that sells a tender/charger. it is considerably more expensive but they say everything is 100% sourced stateside. I am sick of Chinaesium, and intend to speak with my wallet as such. I think I can justify the extra cost anyway as I just spent 300+ on two new East Penn AGM batteries for my 2500HD.

Brett Mackey you are correct. The ones that I mentioned in this video have sensors that will stop charging once it’s at the correct voltage. Then as the battery sits they will come on to keep the charge. :) I have all of mine on these year round.

The Schumacher 2amp Battery Maintainer will be perfect for this. Just hook it up before you leave and you will be good to go when you get home.
The Black+Decker BM3M would be my choice. Parasitic leaks from your car's alarm system will drain the battery within 2-3 weeks if unattended leaving you stranded.

Without any real commentary on electrical function this is a kind of long superficial review of $20 units, and which ones have which leads, connections, and mounts. It's not at all about "choosing the right battery maintainer."

Is 1.5 amp enough for a car battery?
richieb74 To keep the charge and maintain it absolutely, if your battery is completely dead and you’re trying to use this as a charger then it will struggle.
1.5A is more than enough to maintain and lightly charge a 12V car battery. Most battery maintainers costing much more only charge/maintains at 0.750A ! The point here is that you don't want an over powerful charger/maintainer on an unattended battery that is continously plugged into your battery !

Dwight Dale should work fine as long as the batteries are not completely drained. Around 8 hours on a trickle charger will give you enough to start. For a job like this I would use a car starter jump pack. It will allow you to start the car but wouldn’t charge the batteries.
Is there a similar device that will keep a battery charged w/o having to plug the device into a wall outlet? I don't have a garage & don't think my landlord will allow me to keep the battery charged inside my house; she will view it as a fire hazard.
I think there are some solar powered ones but I have not had the chance to use them yet.
Hi John, Really enjoyed your video comparaison. I had to by a Battery Charger for my Massey-Ferguson GC2300 equipped with a snow blower and for the 1st time this winter, it refused to start. I had a older model battery charger which I used for one day and it dit the job. However, I just purchased a Schumacher 3A for $52.00 CDN dollars and I am please, once I seen your video, that I bought this model. It also has a cigarette adapter. Question: I have a power boat with two batteries, with an A/B switch. Can I also use it in the summer time, for instance, to charge battery A and then, battery B? I can't find the Stanley 2AMP anywhere.. just 1.5.. can you give a part # or model # for me to find?
Crimtide I just did a search on Amazon and found they have moved to the 1.5 but you can still find the 2.0 part number Bc209w.
@@JohnEngel Thanks for the info. Do you know of any reason why one should spend more money on the Deltran Battery Tender? I would imagine warranty being 5 years is better than what Stanley can offer.. Not sure about anything else.
Crimtide I think it all comes down to preference. I used a Deltran about 10 years ago and it did the same as the ones I use now. The warranty is nice because they can go bad after years of use.
@@JohnEngel I think I'll go with the Deltran BT Plus 1.25A .. seems pretty decent, on sale right now too. 5 year warranty as opposed to a 1 year limited on the Stanley. Thanks again.
The Stanley says 1.5 on the website but when it showed up the box had 2 amp on it.
You just reviewed them on cost and convenience features only. Electrical items with no electrical tests. What voltages and currents do they apply to batteries in various conditions? Just a talker not a reviewer.

I bought the Black & Decker because it was available immediately at local store, happy so far after 1 year maintaining motorcycle battery.
George J Funderburk the black and decker is really nice because you can manually switch between 6 and 12v. Thank you again for the comments and suggestions. I am planning to buy some more and do another video like this so all of the feedback helps make better videos.
I, too, was a bit disappointed with this review. I presently have a couple of Battery Tender brand maintainers and need a third unit now and was looking for a comparison of how these devices maintain batteries. I searched for "best battery maintainers" and was looking for more in-depth information.
So where is the actual testing? I have not found one single actual test between any of the big brands. Just price and advertising lol. I can’t believe no one has hooked up these things to a scope and actually tested these things

John Engel and that wasn’t a negative comment directed to you. I have been obsessed lately after replacing two batteries in my truck. I have been reading and watching videos on lead acid batteries. I spent most of my career as a mechanic and still never fully understood the science behind this old technology lol. Now that I’m obsessed i find it really hard to believe no one has actually tested any of these products.

Stuff Seth Makes good call. This video was subpoenaed for a lawsuit and there was coffee right infringement that had to be removed. The only way to do it was to use RUclips‘s editor and it makes things very abrupt. Good eye though.

Hi John, I have an 08 Bentley Continental GT that sits in the garage for long periods of time. What battery maintainer do you recommend for that vehicle?
Vincent Ng so the Bentley has a battery charging port in the trunk. If you are looking in the truck it’s on the left wall. Ctek is the brand that came with it. It’s a little more expensive but if you are only buying one, it’s not that bad.

First of all, there is only ONE brand that is called BATTERY TENDER, the others are battery maintainers. If you are going to talk about Deltran Battery Tenders, you should at least have one on the table. And you completely overlooked CTEK, a leading brand of smart chargers/battery maintainers. The title of your program is wrong, you never displayed a real Battery Tender which by the way comes in many amperages, which include 1.25 amp, 3 amp, 4 amp and 5 amp. Moreover, your title should have included the fact that you are really talking about low to mid cost smart chargers.

@@peterpiper_203 So far I have had no issues with any of the battery maintainers that I tested during the making of the original video. My favorite budget friendly brand is still the Schumacher as it has the most versatility and ease of use. Any of the three will keep you battery exactly where you need it. What happened to the NOCO Genius G750? What kind of 3/4 ass review is this? Also your description states "Selecting the right battery maintainer is easy when you have all the facts!". What about power consumption? You didn't tell me that fact. If I leave a battery on the tender almost 24/7, I want to know how much power it is consuming because that will add up. This review falls short. Downvoted.
