This is absolutely awesome information and very timely as I was just trying to decide what to get for my Z51 C7. Mine did NOT come with a charger. So now I know to get the ctek charger. Thank you and keep these segments coming!
I have always had good luck with battery tenders. They go into a float mode and will start charging again when the battery charges drops. They are also easy to get. I have not seen one of these chargers in stores anywhere before
I've been using Deltran Battery Tenders also for many years on my motorcycles and cars with no issues. Not saying anything negative about the CTEK offerings, but for price, availability, durability and performance, Battery Tender is a very good option to consider.
What I heard is these battery tenders alter the voltage and current based on the batteries condition, unlike other battery trickle chargers. Seems like it’s a great candidate for a comparison test.
Been using a CTEK for years now. Best on the market. Have brought dead batteries back to life. The desulphation pulsing to reverse damage works amazingly. It will keep pulsing the battery till it comes out of its dead state and starts to accept a charge. Worth every penny. Mine came with a bolt on terminal set and a clamp set. Quick and easy swapping with the setup. Best way to charge all sorts of batteries correctly including AGM batteries which normal chargers can damage.
And the trouble with most," smart" chargers is if the battery is down too far the charger will not turn on as it thinks it's being shorted. You have to introduce a separate 12 V source to foll it the turn on. This probably is the case with this one too.
Yes lithium batteries like to stay at 20-80% SOC for maximum life. Lead acid really likes to be fully charged. A car's alternator doesn't really do this especially as newer cars have alternators save fuel, so you should charge up your car's battery every few months with a basic charger to less sulphation.
1:25 the CTEK cannot analyze a battery. The only way to do that is with a load test and capacity test, assuming of course the battery accepts a full charge.
Whatever you all guy's say about this video in negative turns,,, you are all wrong,,, I've been working for the last 25 yrs in the automotive industry and when I switched over to CTEK™ some 11-12 yrs ago I would never in my life go back to use standard chargers again,,, this brand never even once let me down. You can all go into technical terms with me if you want,,, but the fact still remains,, it's one of the world's best chargers no matter what you need em for,,, and i don't get paid for saying this,,, just try it and be satisfied,,
So correct me i if am wrong, this is in essence the same technology that Radio Control modelers have been using for years to balance charge their Lithium Polymer batteries right? They basically have a computer charger.
Vaibhav Kumar Except that a lead-acid battery does not need that. A Li-Po battery needs computer monitoring when charging, they actually have the sensors built into the battery, else you risk the battery exploding. With lead-acid it takes quite a bit, for example charging for a couple of hours and boiling all the water out or overheating and causing one of the plates to fuse to another. With the price of one of their chargers you can just buy a Optima battery and have less faults.
willyp2k I have seen a lead acid battery explode when some folks were trying to jump it. The one man's face was probably 16 inches from the battery when it blew and he didn't get hurt, I was amazed. I don't know if they put the jumper cables on the wrong poles or what, but I know that I jumped about a foot off the ground when it happened.
dan Farrell That is from the battery degassing, it releases hydrogen gas. It is best to connect the negative jumper cable to the engine to reduce of chance of sparks igniting it.
One thing to be aware most (but not all) smart chargers need manually reset if the power goes down. Maintanance chargers that cycle on and off automatically are safer and better for the battery than float chargers. Most smart chargers won't even attempt to charge a completely flat battery. In Euro the discount stores Lidl and Aldi often have discounted specials on good smart chargers.
Glad you bring that up. Have both types of smart charger/Maintainer myself. Yet, having bought a "set it, forget it" (automatically attempts to charge, if properly connected/ detects at least 2v when powered up) Diehard charger first... I was a bit surprised when I found my second one (Stanley Fat Max with several settings options) didn't have this feature. It fails "off" after restored power. Suppose both have their place...
I wish there was a place to have one installed into my C6. I've seen the C7 installed, never knew what it was called but will be getting one soon. Many thanks.
Very informative vid, thanks for sharing. I am wondering, what do you use for a battery master/cutoff switch (I noticed one in the early Miura)? What would you recommend?
I just buy a heavy commercial battery charger that autozone and many service center, dealerships use and that works fine. Best $800 investment I have made. I love wheeling it around.
What I’ve learned over the years, if the band is Schumacher, leave it on the shelf. If I works, it’ll only last till it’s out of warranty. If you’re lucky it’ll only blow itself up. 25 years ago it was good stuff.
How is this practically superior to the line of Battery Tender products that seem to do basically the same thing? I have been very happy with mine and had no battery deaths.
kevin9c1 I wouldn't say that there's no difference, both products are way better than the classic transformer/rectifier chargers. There may be differences in details that may show up as battery life being slightly shorter with one compared to another but it would take testing over several years to come to a final conclusion on that. If the lifetime of your battery is 8 years with one and 9 with the other - would you really worry?
Love Jay Leno's Garage, and continually impressed with Jay's knowledge and the guests. But this was nearly useless. Sounded like a TV commercial, not a serious discussion of the technology.
Good info Jay and spot on tech. Nice seeing ancillary car support equipment, much needed. BTW, not all batteries are the same and some do like 80% for storage (LiPo for ex). Keep up the good work and if you do decide to do the CNBC show, best wishes and I'll be watching ;)
I live in the states and I own three different models of CTEK that I use for different situations and I love there products. Never had any issues with them and they work exceptionally well. I recommend their products!
@@pebjr6621 Likewise, I am in the US. After I posted this, I purchased the "CEN-TECH 6V/12V 2 Amp 3-Stage Microprocessor Controlled Automatic Battery Charger" for like $27 as posted now or for like $25 from Harbor Freight Tools. Interesting video, BUT a misleading point here the small trickle charger that was picked up off the table by Jay Leno clearly stated on it's side was for lead acid battery's, yet the battery you seamed to be referring to was an AGM type battery, does this mean a battery charger for lead acid battery's can be used to charge an AGM type battery ??
I've seen other car videos from Jay later on and he really likes and recommends these chargers. No one has more cars laying around parked than he does.
I've been using the small battery tender brand maintainers for over 15 years on my motorcycles, zero issues, always keeps the battery topped off. in fact, I had the original battery in my 2006 Kawasaki KLX 250s up until this last year. Folks that's 17 years on the original battery.
1.Hook the charger to the battery,THEN plug the charger into the wall (AC) socket ! 2.When chargeing is complete UNPLUG the charger from the wall (AC) socket FIRST, then unhook the charger from the battery ! ////////// I use a trickle charger on my bike during winter,I plug it in before start up (appx.1 hr.shumacher auto XM1-5) then start and heat up ,after shut off,I plug the charger in agin and recharge,(because a warmup doesnt run long enough to completely charge) appx. 1 hr. then remove the charger completely ! I start it up at least once a week . I never leave a charger hooked up after the charge is complete ! TO MANY THINGS CAN HAPPEN LEAVEING IT HOOKED UP !
BINGO, this is EXACTLY what I do with my 6 cars and 3 motorcycles. With COVID I don't drive much lately except I run each motorcycle for 10 minutes at idle, and each car for 10 minutes while I drive it around the 3 mile block. I have a 2013 Buick Verano Turbo with 13k miles on it that's a garage queen, car looks like new inside and out and the original battery starts the car up easily even before I charge it. I have typically had Delco batteries last 7 years or longer, and have had several Advance Auto Parts AGM batteries that don't seem to last any longer. Only difference is I charge all car batteries up to 100% with my Schumacher Car/Marine charger and the M/C batteries with a Battery Tender Plus 12V Battery Charger and Maintainer. And don't forget to exercise the clutch on the M/Cs or the plates will rust together after 3 weeks idle like they did on my Suzuki Volusia. I use Mobil1 in ALL vehicles.
I work service at a bmw/MINI dealership and for all newer cars supposed to use a new deutronics chargers whenever we diagnose or program cars but for anything around pre 2013 we have power max chargers chargers we use, power max even has a 100 amp charger that's actually designed to be used to program vehicles. Duetronic smart charger is about 1300 dollars as for that power max I intend to buy runs for about 220, just my 2 cents is all
I’m too dumb to figure out how to use this!!! The car stays on the driveway so it won’t be indoors….. is that a problem? Can be use like that? Or only on a garage?
If you have a one of the larger older battery chargers, that may have the engine start feature that no longer works. Centurytool dot net has parts for most chargers, so you can repair your heavy duty battery battery charger for a fraction of what a new one costs. My gauge quit working, an easy and cheap fix.
Funny how overtime I've connected my CTEK to a battery it sparked. Even sparked when both clamps touched together. So not sure why they are saying that doesn't occur with their product.
Hey Jay. I'm a fan of yours, but... Those guys didn't answer (never really did) the questions you asked, even when insisting. I've been using very cheap devices of this type for years (more than a decade) with absolutely NO issue. We all wanted to know what's new with this special and "new" product. They explained NOTHING !
Jay, I have been looking for a jump starter for each one of my cars. Can you do a video on which are the best on the market? Passenger cars, 4 cylinder to big SUVs like v10 excursion. Thanks
Jay I am an innovator I have an idea that you are the same as me very curious in how things work and have ideas in how you can do things better to save the end user money making their experience more satisfying in what they have bought, in your battery charger discussion I was interested in how none of the group discussed reverse current flow and the damages that can result from that situation, it would be interesting to discuss this battery charger phenomena and the resulting damages from this?
This is the first video on this channel that I've found truly annoying. They keep talking about "new technology" yet they describe a process that's been used in microcontroller based chargers for many years. A charger that controls voltage and current based on battery load and current draw? That was "new" about 30 years ago. Maybe this is new marketing "technology" based on the BS principle. I'm an EE so I might be taking this a bit personally.
Well said cosborne. These chargers are good chargers but no one with knowledge of charging would call these revolutionary. When the presenters went into sales mode rather then answering Jay's questions it made my eyes glass over. If one doesn't understand batteries these chargers will be fine but I won't ever buy one. Sorry Jay.
These guys really blew a good chance on Leno's interview and product exposure to consumers by annoyingly talking around and around without answering the question directly. Too bad!
4:07 - Not so good analogy. Jay was talking about his battery was dead after several months on a trickle charger and you just gave an analogy of an overcharge condition. That is not analogous to his problem. You also say your charger is "much safer" but don't give specifics why. If you match the trickle charge rate with the self discharge rate, then in theory, you should be able to leave it on for many months with no harm to the battery. I am not impressed with this presentation as it has claims but not factual evidence to back it up. Also some bad explanations.
I just returned a 25 amp ctek it didn’t seem to work right from new now 8 months later it doesn’t work at all and at $250.00 it’s not exactly cheap glad I got my money back thanks Amazon
The best and newest and probably expensive than too. But as with anything you get what ya pay for. I always monitor batterys as they are charging, Thanks Jay!
My 3 year old Ctek MXS 7.0 killed my 3 year old battery. Both were bought in the same shop and I got a new battery under warranty but not thye Ctek. I went and bought a Victron Energy charger.
LEGIT. As someone who works in the the field of electronics, (lawl) I can vouch for that metaphor of the bath tub. Leaving a battery connected to anything in any form honestly, will drain the battery regardless of the electrical flow.
My last car batteries that came fitted in the cars I bought new have lasted 16 years, 14 years and 10 years. Do you think I need one of these chargers? LOL The secret? A quality battery...the two long lasting ones were made by Panasonic and you need a vehicle charging system that is up to spec. Then all you do is keep the battery clean and top it up every second year.
These guys need some help with their website... I want one, I have a tractor that I run maybe once a week for a very short time and this product sounds like just what I need. Hard to figure out which model I need for my application at their website though.
When he said the acid leaves the battery if you over charge it he is Wrong. The water is what can boil or evaporate if over charged. Isn't that the same thing as a deltron Battery Tender has been doing for years?
This is absolutely awesome information and very timely as I was just trying to decide what to get for my Z51 C7. Mine did NOT come with a charger. So now I know to get the ctek charger. Thank you and keep these segments coming!
I have always had good luck with battery tenders. They go into a float mode and will start charging again when the battery charges drops. They are also easy to get. I have not seen one of these chargers in stores anywhere before
I've been using Deltran Battery Tenders also for many years on my motorcycles and cars with no issues. Not saying anything negative about the CTEK offerings, but for price, availability, durability and performance, Battery Tender is a very good option to consider.
lots of words spoken to say pretty much nothing, other than its a magical new tech, and its the best. yeah, two thugs down!
You can all go into technical terms with me if you want,,, but the fact still remains,, it's one of the world's best chargers no matter what you need em for,,, and i don't get paid for saying this,,, just try it and be satisfied,,
Hasse Thorslund its never let you down till this day?
Thanks Jay for yet one more great video. I am getting one or two of these great charges. Keep em coming
So correct me i if am wrong, this is in essence the same technology that Radio Control modelers have been using for years to balance charge their Lithium Polymer batteries right? They basically have a computer charger.
By computer i mean its a computeriesed charger. Like there are sensors in it and so on. Like a 'smart charger'.
With the price of one of their chargers you can just buy a Optima battery and have less faults.
willyp2k
Thanks for the explanation sir!
willyp2k I have seen a lead acid battery explode when some folks were trying to jump it.
Many thanks.
i've have one of these chargers.and it has performed flawlessly,no problems what so every, highly recommended!
I use the most basic straight up 12V 2A charger and hook it up to a timer so it charges for 15 minutes a day. Never had an issue
Very informative vid, thanks for sharing.
I am wondering, what do you use for a battery master/cutoff switch (I noticed one in the early Miura)? What would you recommend?
That 7-8 step charging is now available on 50 dollar chargers.
Charging Jay Leno's cars would be a full time job.
Gotta love Jay - a people's man.
It is now February, 2022. Does this brand still hold up?
Seems to be only sold in the UK.
all over amazon
I live in the states and I own three different models of CTEK that I use for different situations and I love there products. Never had any issues with them and they work exceptionally well. I recommend their products!
@@pebjr6621 Likewise, I am in the US. After I posted this, I purchased the "CEN-TECH 6V/12V 2 Amp 3-Stage Microprocessor Controlled Automatic Battery Charger"
for like $27 as posted now or for like $25 from Harbor Freight Tools. It works great, no issues ( got lucky I guess actually the reviews for it were excellent). Thanks, for responding.
@@cypresspeter2008 I purchased a Viking 2/8/15 Amp Automatic Microprocessor Controlled Battery Charger from Harbor Freight 2 yrs ago and never had any good luck charging and reconditioning batteries. It now sits in the box on the shelf. I've also have a battery tender which is ok, but Ctek is by far the best in my opinion. just my .02 cents
I've been using my CTEK charger for nearly three years now and can't fault it.
What does that even mean.
@@DavyDave1313 What does this question even mean more like.
Still running CTEK chargers, have had to replace the button in one though.
Least favourite show. Comes across as an extended advertorial especially when the Swedish boss doesn't listen to Jay and goes into his sales pitch.
I've seen other car videos from Jay later on and he really likes and recommends these chargers. No one has more cars laying around parked than he does.
Yup. Charger might be good but the reps were absolute tossers.
I have three Optimas and I have had a lot of trouble with two of them, even after using the correct setting. I might try it.
I've been using the small battery tender brand maintainers for over 15 years on my motorcycles, zero issues, always keeps the battery topped off. in fact, I had the original battery in my 2006 Kawasaki KLX 250s up until this last year. Folks that's 17 years on the original battery.
Great review as always can't wait to see you get your hands on a Amg Gt
Where can you buy these chargers?
Aren't you supposed to use a battery tender when you have a battery sitting for a long time?
Cool vids Jay. Thanks.
If you have a one of the larger older battery chargers, that may have the engine start feature that no longer works. Centurytool dot net has parts for most chargers, so you can repair your heavy duty battery battery charger for a fraction of what a new one costs. My gauge quit working, an easy and cheap fix.
Jay's hair looks great.
Funny how overtime I've connected my CTEK to a battery it sparked. Even sparked when both clamps touched together. So not sure why they are saying that doesn't occur with their product.
What about the Noco Genius or Battery Tender?
The Swedish guy on the left sounded like Tim Conway doing Mr. Tudball
Hey Jay. I'm a fan of yours, but... Those guys didn't answer (never really did) the questions you asked, even when insisting. I've been using very cheap devices of this type for years (more than a decade) with absolutely NO issue. We all wanted to know what's new with this special and "new" product. They explained NOTHING !
Correct, they talked a lot and just kept repeating the same sale pitch.
Its a sponsored clip...
Not a all. It's a FAILED sponsored clip. And maybe for a GOOD product. Maybe...
They answered, you apparently didn't understand.
Really enjoyed this video. Very informative even though I only own one car still interesting LOL.
Optimate or Ctek ? wich is best ?
i LOVE JAY LENO!!!
thanks
Jay, I have been looking for a jump starter for each one of my cars. Can you do a video on which are the best on the market? Passenger cars, 4 cylinder to big SUVs like v10 excursion. Thanks
Never heard of CTEK before, but they do look similar to Genius chargers.
It's swedish thats why
Sold me Jay, Thanks. I'm getting a 7002 today.
Muchos thank yous, this is what I was looking for.
Is CTEK now being available in the states? been having these in Sweden for decades :P
So much for supporting American companies that he preaches so often about.
Was thinking the same thing. The cheap Schumacher I have does everything they claim of theirs. Even has automatic voltage selection and de-sulphation.
Well said cosborne. These chargers are good chargers but no one with knowledge of charging would call these revolutionary. When the presenters went into sales mode rather then answering Jay's questions it made my eyes glass over. If one doesn't understand batteries these chargers will be fine but I won't ever buy one. Sorry Jay.
De-Sulphation is a scam. Once a battery is sulphated you can’t save it.
Great job Matt. See you at SEMA
J Leno best car batteries
How come Bernard Juchlis sidecar video is unavailable in the UK? :(
Don't by one. I got it and got fault code F04. There is way reset memory? It thinks I been charging for over 18 hours and won't apply new charge.
Jay always looks like he just got out of bed usually, he is still in his Pajamas! Pajamas Jay.
So your saying the CTEK is better then the Battery Tender Plus ?
Ever heard of a diode?
Love the 3 Mclarens in the back
can you charge a battery and use it at the same time with an 1000 watt inverter?
My last car batteries that came fitted in the cars I bought new have lasted 16 years, 14 years and 10 years. Do you think I need one of these chargers? LOL The secret? A quality battery...the two long lasting ones were made by Panasonic and you need a vehicle charging system that is up to spec. Then all you do is keep the battery clean and top it up every second year.
Nice looking product will have to look into this for the battery on my RV, and Boat.
Why not just fully charge ur battery then unplug it and leave it alone until u use it. Like the way they are at the stores?
I have one of these and it really is good.
Very informative.
Nice Moto Guzzi Lemans III in the back ground. On my I should have never sold list.
Got a CTEK MUS 4.3 in the garage. Great product.
Jay, are going to the Revelocity Event in San Jose?!?
These guys need some help with their website... I want one, I have a tractor that I run maybe once a week for a very short time and this product sounds like just what I need. Hard to figure out which model I need for my application at their website though.
What's that orange car next to the p1?
mclaren mp4 12c then F1
12c
It's the McLaren section of his garage :p
When he said the acid leaves the battery if you over charge it he is Wrong. The water is what can boil or evaporate if over charged. I usually leave a small charger on my antique car's battery in the coldest days of winter and I control it with a light timer so it's only on for maybe four times for an hour each day.
It could leave the battery through capillary action inside the terminal post. That is how the corrosion on the terminals appears.
Ctec breakthrough technology,
As long as you dont know about battery tender,
Also i have one for my motorcycle made by yuasa, had it for 2 years and love it, i park my bike in November and in march just turn the key and start it up.
It's really simple if you have a bike ride it ,a car drive it.
I use battery tender on my 1970 vw Squareback
