A lot of people don't really consider SMW2 a true "Super Mario" game. It would be a Yoshi game, in the same way Mario Land 3 is a Wario game. Yeah there's a Baby Mario, but the player is Yoshi. I agree that including the DK games is debatabe.
I mean, we play as Mario in those games even tho the game is named after the villain. In Yoshi island weplay as Yoshi even if it has Mario in part of the title
Super Mario Sunshine isn't just my favourite Mario game but rather my favourite game of all time. Sad to see it so low but I know I am incredibly biased as I grew up with the game. I am aware of every fault the game has and still I love it more than any game ever. Nothing can beat childhood nostalgia.
@@INFERNO95 I didn't know an unpolished, visually bland game with poor physics and monotonous gameplay that could be started and finished in under half an hour could be considered a great game lol. I think you're the ignorant one here, you're too caught up in your nostalgia to judge games from an impartial perspective.
@@INFERNO95 bruh, you can literally start and finish the game in less than an hour. you're either blinded by nostalgia for the game or you have _incredibly_ low standards for what makes a great game. probably both.
Would've loved to have seen each member's rankings! Galaxy and World are probably the closest we'll ever get to perfect video games, definitely deserving of the top two.
nah, mario world is good but let's not go that far. it's still pretty flawed. the feather downright breaks the level design, the bosses are crap, and aside from the forest of illusion, each of the worlds blend together.
Mario Galaxy 1 is by far my favorite 3D Mario game while SMB3 is my favorite 2D Mario (with World as a *very* close second), so I’m entirely glad to see both ranked very highly. And do ultimately agree that World deserves the #1 spot due to just being the perfect game to show what both the SNES and Nintendo were capable of along with pushing their flagship series to amazing new heights.
I will defend Lost Levels until the end of time, I can agree its not among the best but I wouldn't call it bad. You have to understand that the context of the original Famicom Disk System release, as because it was on disk rather than cartridge it was only ¥2500 compared to the original Super Mario Bros. ¥4900 on initial release. I can agree that it's not a great game for beginners because it wasn't designed for those players and the game is even advertised as such with that For Super Players badge on the cover. This game is for players who have mastered the original game and I think the difficulty is a bit exaggerated as its not nearly as hard as its made out to be.
@Tudsamfa I'm not here to argue if X game is somehow worse than Lost Levels cause even then there are absolutely better designed Mario games than this this is mainly in regards to the overall reception from players outside of Japan who lack the understanding as to why this game turned out the way it did and just writing it off as bad without questioning
@@Ray_2112 Those aren’t justifications. To justify personal taste, you have to explain what it is about one thing that appeals to your tastes more than the other, and what those tastes are. Things can be subjective without being arbitrary.
It's an old man that grew up with the original 2D games that's why. We all know Sunshine is better than SMB1 and 2 but just let old man Jenkins have his fun
@@NymphieJP Yeah exactly, 100%ing SMB2 is a lot more enjoyable than 100%ing SMS, I've done it, and honestly SMS just gets ruined if you go for more than the minimum amount of shines needed.
To this day, Odyssey is still my favorite Mario game. While I can logically understand the complaint of Power Moons not having as much value because of the sheer number of them and the simplicity of the tasks, while I'm playing the game I really don't care man. I just love moving around the worlds in that game and experiencing how grand it all feels. On top of that, I even kinda like how many moons there are because it gives the player a lot of freedom in how they can explore the worlds and which moons they get before reaching the Darker Side of the Moon, the game's final challenge, since you don't need even close to every moon to reach it. As for Mario Wonder, I'd probably put it at #5 or #4 on my list. Almost certainly my favorite 2D Mario, though World is no slouch either.
I'm glad you put NSMBU on top of the New series. Its connected overworld and more unique themes plus NSLU always made it feel fresher than the others to me.
I agree with every "top 10" list because we're looking into someone's happiness and joy in video games. I've played and loved every game on this list, it's extremely hard to rank them personally.
Mario Galaxy is my favorite (I have not played Wonder yet), I played it for the first time last year on my Wii and it was so magical. Galaxy 2 was amazing but you said it I prefer 1 being more of a high stakes story.
Yeah, An issue with Mario Galaxy 2 is the presentation and movement between levels is almost done cheaply when Galaxy one was so epic. Which is weird, especially as it's essentially a soft reboot of the Galaxy 1 game. I felt collecting all the stars was almost more fun in Galaxy one as well. 2 was an unrewarding chore at times,
Sunshine is an controversial game. It's an love/hate game. For me, Sunshine is very rough. The game can be buggy at times & it was rushed due to they wonna show how powerful the GameCube can run without any content it was scrapped. The controls are quite janky and the physics are off at times. An good chunk of the levels, missions and Shine Sprites placement can be really repetitive and frustrating rather than fairly challenging and fun. Going after Shadow Mario throughout the entire game and collect all 7 Shines in each main missions of the main course to unlock the final level of the game instead of just collecting the amount of Shine Sprites u only need is absolutely tedious and kills the pacing of the game. And the 100% completion is garbage.
@@jaretco6423 All I will say is I agree the game has faults, but at the end of the day I would rather just mess around in Delfino Plaza alone than play a decent chunk of the games they have above it. The controls feel incredible once you master them, and of course there are many memorable moments despite its faults.
@Blazethh I mean. That's fair and kinda agree. I rather spent around Delfeno Plaza messing around stuff than finishing the main game itself. That legit the only good part of doing.
It's hard to appreciate when it's miles behind the other 3D Mario games. It's actually impressive they could create a video game that un-fun coming directly after Mario 64
I actually agree with most of these but I definitely would place Galaxy 2 over Galaxy 1. The first game had better atmosphere sure, but I think 2's gameplay is stronger overall and gameplay is king at the end of the day. Also Yoshi.
I think when people are saying it’s the best Mario platformer, they are talking about the 2D games. I, as well as other people, consider the 3D Mario games in a different category to the 2D ones. The mechanics vary greatly between the 2d and 3d that I wouldn’t consider them the same genre. By this logic Doom Eternal and Contra are should be in a same ranking list because they both include running, jumping, and firing guns.
weird comment. doom eternal and contra wouldn't be in the same ranking list because they're not in the same series. all mainline mario games are in the same series. lmao
That's the problem with ranking stuff like Mario: Nostalgia makes some games rank way higher even though a lot of the games lower on the list are objectively better.
@@lol-ih1tl That's the problem with ranking anything basically...everybody has subjective thoughts on games based on what they played first or at a special time in their life. Especially the early games adding nostalgia is very powerful, and it's also a matter of personal taste as with music and movies too. Therefor rankings like these will always be subjective to a large degree.
Looking through the comments, I'm glad I'm not the only one that thought Sunshine should have been in the top ten. #17 seems way too low for me, though I admit, there's a few on this list I haven't played yet.
It's a great game, but more of a puzzle platformer that's hard to compare to the "usual" Mario JNRs. A game like Bowser's Fury would have made more sense to include here than DK94 and the GBA one imo.
I feel like I need to replay all of the Mario games to feel more confident on my opinion since several of them I havent replayed in over a decade. I tried thinking of a top 5 and I kept debating with myself over everything except for Galaxy being at number 1 for me. That game is so magical and to me feels like the epitome of Mario platforming. It stands above Galaxy 2 for me partly due to nostalgia but also the comet observatory. Having a hub like that just makes it more interesting to me than the ship from Galaxy 2.
An excellent list and pretty solid ranking overall, although I would have liked to have seen the Mario Maker games included (being a celebration of Mario platformers) and the DK games (inciuding Mario vs. DK) omitted as they are kind of their own side series stemming from the classic arcade game rather than what we know these days as a Mario platformer. G&W feels like an odd inclusion as well, tho I always appreciate GVG willingness to highlight the weird and wonderful in any gaming franchise's history. Keep these great videos coming!
I was pleasantly surprised to see how well most of this list matched my own personal takes. Definitely hoped to see Super Mario Maker 2 and SMM for 3DS on here, since they both have dedicated story modes that function like more "traditional" Super Mario titles, but I still can't complain with the inclusion of GB Donkey Kong! Great stuff!
You included the 1986 Game & Watch entry, but not the PC-88 Super Mario Bros. Special. That was a distinct game from the original, with complete new levels (and no screen scrolling - it would sit at the bottom of the list). I personally consider SM64 DS to be different enough from the original to be considered its own distinct game as well. And I would have added Yoshi's Island to the list. Nintendo certainly considers it part of the main series, since it was rereleased as one of the Advance games.
@@MarcoDToon because it is an incredible fun and well designed platformer? 🤔 Maybe, I don't know 😂 it is #7 in the video itself, it is not something like exclusive to me or few people, in metacritic is the 5th best scored Super Mario game.
@@64GamingMaster I'd rather believe it's a world-wide conspiracy than accepting people think it's a great game. The game is OK, and when you think it's a mainline 3D Mario game for a home console it turns from ok to extremely disappointing really quick. I had a Wii U and played the game on release and I even almost 100%ed it (didn't finish each level 5 different times to complete it with every character but I did get close to doing even that), so it's not like I don't know what I'm talking about. As I was playing it all I could think of was how Galaxy changed the way I perceive videogames as a whole and how mind-blowing it was, and that was a generation prior...
there's no fucking way you guys included mario vs donkey kong, the original dk, and a fuckin game and watch game as main series mario platformers but not yoshis island, it's just wild
Call me nostalgia blind, but i dont care. Sunshine is still my favorite Mario platformer to this day. There's just nothing else quite like it in the series. All the levels feel like an actual place in a lived in world and are a ton of fun to explore. And to this day i still feel Mario is the most fun to control in Sunshine with how snappy and fast he feels. Now putting my bias aside, theres obviously flaws with the game, but i still feel it gets looked at way too harshly by some people and i think it deserves to at least be in the top 10.
Super Mario 64 is still the greatest Mario game in my opinion. It's a combination of the surreal vibes (due to the low-texture polygon graphics), the incredible array of mysteries and secrets (that are still being uncovered to this day) and the genre-defining gameplay that changed the landscape of adventure games for years to come, that may never be matched again.
I was shocked to see 64 so low, to be honest. It's one of those pieces of media that defined an entire genre on its own. I suppose it depends how much you include historical context into your subjective ranking.
Yoshi's Island is so much better than World it's crazy how slept on that game is from a gameplay perspective, music and sheer content of new ideas just cuz of the cutesy artstyle (or baby mario crying but we got hacks now to disable that noise lol). Also 3D World is underrated.
Kind of crazy that sunshine didnt crack the top 10. I think it would do for me. Also mario 64 at 8. Although fair enough, it is pretty consistent and gives you an idea of derricks tastes because mario 64 is number 1 for me.
Honestly, Sunshine is not even gonna make it in the top 10. It's not an bad game by any means. But it is really on the rougher side and how buggy the game is.
You forgot Hudson's Mario platformers. Mario Bros. Special and Super Mario Bros. Special. They're not great, being on worse hardware, but they are officially made by the company that would later develop Mario Party. I would also put the pseudo-spinoffs in the running: Super Mario: Yoshi's Island and Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3, since they were originally released as mainline titles, and the spinoffs branched from them.
I really did like Mario Wonder it has so much charm, fun levels and wonder flower moments like the metal mario moment caught me off guard i was happy with it
My top 10: 1. 3D World 2. Galaxy 2 3. World 4. SMB3 5. Bowser's Fury 6. Galaxy 1 7. Wonder 8. NSMBU/Luigi U (they're the same game IMO) 9. Odyssey 10. SM64
I feel like it’s disingenuous to rag on wonder’s boss fights and then not touch on the boss fights in world, where the 7 koopalings are pretty much directly ripped from 3 and have about as much variety as the bowser he fights in wonder
It may be the same characters as bosses from 3 to world but the fights themselves are completely different. The Bowser Jr fights in Wonder all work the same besides the wonder effects causing relatively minor changes
World does have Raznor and King Boo as well, and the amazing final boss. But Wonder’s boss fights are objectively more mechanically advanced and quality than the Koopalings are.
@@Operation_Bagel bruh, some of the kooaplings in world literally have the same boss fight as each other. you're not gonna tell me that mario world, the game with _that_ fight for BOTH iggy and larry, has better boss fights than wonder. at least wonder's boss fights take more than two seconds.
Super Mario Odyssey and Super Mario World are the best for me! Odyssey is basically a playground to have fun in, I still have so many moons left to find and like going back to the game once in a while just to discover some more and enjoy the different worlds (it still blows me away how rich the game is). I love super mario maker 2 because I get to play many different mario eras in one game and there's a tooooon of levels to have fun with. I have yet to play Wonder!
Every Mario game ranking video ever: Top: Childhood nostalgia games High: Good modern games (plus SMB3 or SMW at times) Medium: Miscellaneous games Low: Either bad/disappointing modern games or super outdated old games that came out before the childhood nostalgia games
Super Mario Galaxy 2 is better than 1 in every conceivable metric. 2 is more challenging and ends up being more satisfying to finish. Galaxy 2 has way more variety and is simultaneously more focused with better level design. Yoshi returns complete with his own powerups. 120 green stars is fantastic endgame content. Nintendo needs to hurry up and give us Super Mario Galaxy 3
every conceivable metric except for presentation. presentation that is so brutally stripped down and soulless that galaxy 1 wins by default. galaxy 1 is both a game and an experience. galaxy 2 is just a game.
when you^ve really mastered the sunshine mechanics, then the real fun begins :D finishing the game without using fludd or maybe without using any nozzle except the sprinkler
Great ranking that I mostly agree except for the top 6, where I would go: 6) Bro. 3 5) Galaxy 2 4) World 3) Wonder 2) Odyssey 1) Galaxy Also I wish more people would bring up why Doki Doki Panic was chosen as Mario 2 rather than any other game, which was that the vertical scrolling tech demo was intended for a "Mario style" game, and just happened that Fuji TV wanted to lincense a game to Nintendo. The game going back to Mario is completing the circle, rather than a weird side stop.
@@TheJmack90he means its been 35 yrs.. they used Super Mario in the title to boost sales but in reality its a Yoshi game, its like considering Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land a Mario game when its actually a Wario game
I think Sunshine being low is fair though. Even without the 100% completion, the game still has alot of the rougher side with it's level designs, missions, structure and how janky the controls and physics are. And the fact u have to chase Shadow Mario throughout the entire game is tedious.
"There's too many moons" remains one of the most bizarre complaints I've ever heard concerning a Mario game that was specifically built to compliment the concept of a console that can be played on the go.
A console that can ALSO be played on the go. It's still a usual console for most and game design shouldn't revolve primarly about when or where someone plays a game. Getting a moon about every 5 seconds for mostly doing nothing takes away from it being anything special for the most part. Odyssey is a great game, but having moons, the main collectible be as insignificant as finding korog seeds in BOTW is no way near a "bizarre complaint".
My top 5 ranking: 1 Super Mario Galaxy 2 Super Mario World 3 Super Mario Land 2 4 Super Mario 3D World 5 Super Mario Galaxy 2 Haven't played them all yet. But this was a fun list to watch!
It’s an interesting topic being there’s so much to choose from.. I still think SMW on SNES was the perfect one but maybe I’m biased being it’s one of the few I actually finished.. I need to get on top of going through a lot of the others too.. I got Wonder for Christmas and yeah I think it’s actually one of the best they’ve done..
My list is honestly pretty similar to yours, and even the top 5 is really similar to mine. But here it goes: 1. Super Mario Odyssey 2. Galaxy 1 3. Super Mario World 4. Super Mario Galaxy 2 5. Super Mario Bros. 3 Wonder is close to the top 5, and if there is one game which I felt deserved a higher placement it would be Super Mario Land 2, and if there is one I felt deserved lower it would be Super Mario Bros. 2 USA (just never really liked the game unfortunately 😢). But thank you for the video!
Wonder is great! And I actually like how the shorter length makes it closer to the length of 3 and World...but...the focus on badge and challenge rooms brings the game down a lot for me. As many levels as there are, the way they are spaced out makes worlds feel empty. Its clear the game is designed have a different experience upon every playthrough and with that in mind, I'd probably excuse these issues more, if restarting the game from the start wasnt tied to your nintendo account. The game rewards you with medals, so why would I erase it, but if I dont, I have no reason to replay badge challenges that litter the game. I would have preferred taking the badge system out entirely if it meant a more focused experience.
Dang, sleeping on Sunshine. Honestly thought you all forgot it but turns out I missed it way back at the beginning of the video. I personally place it as number 4, only behind the two Galaxy games and Odyssey.
9:21 Even as a kid, I was thrown off why this was Mario 2 when everything looked different and felt different..never really knew why it did'nt feel like an evolution unlike Mario 3 until many years later.
Pretty much agree with the ranking 100%. SMB3 is my personal favorite, but mostly because it was such a big part of my life as a kid. I fully recognize that SMW is the superior game objectively. And I agree that Galaxy is the best 3D Mario game of all time. It's the only Mario game that I ever 100%'d. And yet, I can still see how SMW is more qualified to be a timeless classic.
Good list overall, I'm happy to see Super Mario Galaxy and World on the higher spots. But having the original Super Mario Bros. at 15 seems criminal to me 😅
@@danielebowman near flawless? the last few worlds of mario 1 are just made up of reused levels from earlier worlds. it may be the template for the rest of the series, but the rest of the series built off that template to such a great extent that there's not much of a reason to revisit mario 1.
This is such a great ranking list. It'd be awesome to see it in a podcast format breaking down the scores each one got along the way from the GVG team.
Its a terrible list, created purely from a nostalgia perspective, with a heavy emphasis on pretending that more influential games are therefore the better games.
I just tried the demo of the new MvDK and I’m quite impressed. It’s like they meshed DK ‘94 and SMB2 together.. Gonna have to pick it up one of these days! And I really miss Mario & DK as rivals with Pauline & all.. Better storyline than Bowser over & over but I guess I’m in the minority?!

Super Mario Bros. 2 (Lost Levels) 24. Super Mario Run 25. Super Mario Bros. Game & Watch
I imagine some will scratch their heads at U being the "best" NSMB game. I've seen folks all over RUclips and Twitter bash this game a bunch. Upon playing it on Wii U in 2014, I saw just how it felt a _little_ unique with the worlds and even the individual Koopaling boss fights. Moreover, I'm one of those oddballs that likes U Deluxe, if only for the option to choose my character. The general consensus I've seen is that the first New Super Mario Bros. is the most ambitious one. It does feature unique bosses and feels a bit more challenging, but for my tastes, Wii is my favorite. I loved seeing the Koopalings in 3D for the first time, and the memories I've gathered with it since 2009 is hard to surmount. Funny enough, I often see Mario fans gush over the originality of the two Super Mario Land adventures. While Land 2 is one of my favorites, the original is a bit on the basic side. I see that Mario Bros. arcade is absent. Hmm. Well, if I'm being real, it's one of my least favorites. Good for introducing Luigi, but not much else brings me back to it. I appreciate how you approached the remakes. Being the _special_ Mario nerd I am, I tend to cherish some of these revisions as amongst my favorite games; Super Mario All-Stars is in my top ten, 64 DS is my favorite 3D Mario, and Super Mario Advance 2 is my preferred way of playing Super Mario World. Honestly, I can't bring myself to argue with you guys' thoughts. Nice video!
@@INFERNO95 huh? mario land is easily the most basic game in the series. only 12 levels, and outside of the shmup levels, very little variety between those levels. land 2 has way more variety throughout.
I'm happy to see Sunshines placement on this list. It is a good game and mostly fun to finish. But it is also a buggy mess and arguably the worst Mario game to 100%, mostly because 90% of the optional shines are really bad.
Mario Wonder is probably a top 3 Mario for me, but Galaxy is still probably the best Mario game overall, at least to me. I wonder what the Sonic platformer ranking will look like...
Honestly not surprised to see Sunshine so low, but I love it. Here’s my top 5: 1. Super Mario World 2. Super Mario Sunshine 3. Super Mario Odyssey 4. Super Mario Galaxy 5. Super Mario 64
I 100% completed mario sunshine and I completely agree. Mario sunshine is fun, I love the flood mechanics and the crazy things you can do with that, but it's definitely not the best. the janky gameplay and horrendous camera was what made this game challenging to love aside from the actual in game challenge. mario 64, mario galaxy and odyssey are definitely the better 3d mario platforming games
As someone who grew up with SMW I feel it gets far too much praise for mostly nostalgia. I love the game, but I feel like Wonder is leaps and bounds above it. But I understand it’s your opinion and I respect that. Very interesting to see where you put things. Sunshine would be at least Top 10 for me.
wonder is better than world in every single aspect. people just keep sucking up to world without actually asking themselves _why_ they think it's still the best. every single criticism I've seen people give about wonder can also be criticized about mario world, sometimes to an even greater extent. and yet... nobody does.
@@jclkaytwo seriously, people's nostalgia bias is so extreme. tbf I haven't finished world but of what I have played of it, while it's good, I wouldn't necessarily even say it's better than mario 3, let alone wonder

"It's not without weaknesses" by saying Wonder is easy...is like incredibly low hanging fruit lol. Half of the Mario games here (even World) are easy as pie.
Exactly. The only mainline Mario games I’d consider “hard” are The Lost Levels and Sunshine. I just find the idea of judging a mainline Mario game by its difficulty so inherently stupid because mainline Mario has almost never been difficult in the slightest.
I’m a huge Super Mario fan, I’ve played through every game multiple times on this list with the exception of the game and watch game. I’m not going to include the 3 Mario vs Donkey Kong games you included on my list, because that just complicates it too much. I’m also including Bowser’s Fury as it’s own thing. 21. I'm too lazy to rank them all, but here's my Top 5: 1. Super Mario Odyssey 2. Super Mario Galaxy 2 3. Super Mario Bros. Wonder 4. Super Mario 64 5. Super Mario World
It's funny because I think mario run actually had some of the most satisfying challenges. It's just a shame that there wasn't enough content and the game was far too short. I know it also flopped because people probably weren't willing the pay that much for a mobile game. If the game had went into a mario maker direction the game would have given itself much better replay value and longevity through user generated content. I think mario maker fits mobile better too because you can chip away at level design on the go.
Donkey Kong '94 is a 10/10 but it is absolutely not a mainline Mario platformer, you'd have to also include the first Mario vs Donkey Kong at that point considering how similar they are gameplay-wise. And to put it in there in place of Yoshis Island is also a little confusing imo.
Good list. The only thing I disagree with is the fact that New Luigi U and Bowser's Fury should be regarded as individual games, separate from New Mario U and 3D World. These clearly aren't alternate modes or expansions to the original games. They are wholly unique games.
Honestly, 3D Land is so underrated. The stereoscopic 3D looks amazing and the whole game is just so happy and charming, I love it!
Agree, I love it and remember 100%ing it one fall day in 2012 after getting my xl on launch day.

I love mario too but lost levels, mario run, and mario land are not great games by any definition lol

Did they call it bad? Or do you just consider it better than Mario Land?
@Tudsamfa I'm not here to argue if X game is somehow worse than Lost Levels cause even then there are absolutely better designed Mario games than this
this is mainly in regards to the overall reception from players outside of Japan who lack the understanding as to why this game turned out the way it did and just writing it off as bad without questioning
Lost level was a mean spirit game that felt no more then a clone of the original game.
I will label Mario Wonder as the best 2D Mario and Galaxy as the best 3D Mario. Overall though I find the 3D games to be by far my favorites
Yeah it doesn’t touch World or YI but it’s easily a top 5 2D Mario game. I just wish it were a bit longer 🙏

@@CrowTRobotNah. I think the length is perfectly fine. Making it long will not make it any better.

We really need to hear some justifications for some of these placements. Super Mario Sunshine being lower than SMB2 is bonkers.
Here is your justification - personal taste, subjective thoughts, nostalgia. Everyone has those and decides rankings subjectively.
How about SMS was unfinished and SMB2 wasn’t? Lol
Almost certainly my favorite 2D Mario, though World is no slouch either.
yeah no
I'm glad you put NSMBU on top of the New series. Its connected overworld and more unique themes plus NSLU always made it feel fresher than the others to me.
I agree with every "top 10" list because we're looking into someone's happiness and joy in video games. I've played and loved every game on this list, it's extremely hard to rank them personally.
Sunshine is criminally underrated ☀️
Whoah! SMB3's controls are perfect! I can understand its not everyones cup of tea but the game is the best handling 2d mario game.
Mario Galaxy is my favorite (I have not played Wonder yet), I played it for the first time last year on my Wii and it was so magical. Galaxy 2 was amazing but you said it I prefer 1 being more of a high stakes story.
High stakes story? Lol Galaxy 2 is better in every way that matters in a Mario game.

@@alibabaschultz352it really is not lol
@@ppo9200 It is to me. Stop trying to deny my opinions
2 was an unrewarding chore at times,
Do we even like the same franchise? I will never understand how anyone could put Sunshine close to that low
Ever heard of different opinions? Subjective feelings? Nostalgia?
It's hard to appreciate when it's miles behind the other 3D Mario games. It's actually impressive they could create a video game that un-fun coming directly after Mario 64
I actually agree with most of these but I definitely would place Galaxy 2 over Galaxy 1. The first game had better atmosphere sure, but I think 2's gameplay is stronger overall and gameplay is king at the end of the day. Also Yoshi.
New Super Mario Bros. 2 actually has pretty great level design, especially in Worlds Mushroom, Flower, and Star.
I think when people are saying it’s the best Mario platformer, they are talking about the 2D games. I, as well as other people, consider the 3D Mario games in a different category to the 2D ones. The mechanics vary greatly between the 2d and 3d that I wouldn’t consider them the same genre. By this logic Doom Eternal and Contra are should be in a same ranking list because they both include running, jumping, and firing guns.
weird comment. doom eternal and contra wouldn't be in the same ranking list because they're not in the same series. all mainline mario games are in the same series. lmao

Donkey Kong for the Gameboy at 9 is crazy
It is that good, honestly I didn't believe it until I played it.
It's a great game, but more of a puzzle platformer that's hard to compare to the "usual" Mario JNRs. A game like Bowser's Fury would have made more sense to include here than DK94 and the GBA one imo.
Where would you rank it?
@@INFERNO95 DK 94 GB : Best Mario Platformer all time !

Amazing rank, totally agree on the 1st place, my top 5:
1. World
2. 64
3. Bros 3
4. Wonder
5. 3D World

That’s why 3D World was better on the Switch.

if lost levels is actually better than many franchises' best, that would be deeply depressing.
That's a big stretch. Lost Levels is pretty garbage.
I'm definitely on the Galaxy 2 side. There is way more variety in the galaxies.
It's an important & revolutionary game no doubt. But greatest Mario game ever made? Not even the slightest.

"There's too many moons" remains one of the most bizarre complaints I've ever heard concerning a Mario game that was specifically built to compliment the concept of a console that can be played on the go.
A console that can ALSO be played on the go. It's still a usual console for most and game design shouldn't revolve primarly about when or where someone plays a game.

@@FB-zh5se believe me, mario world doesn't hold any surprises, so whatever you think of world now will probably be the same when you reach the credits. if you've played the first two worlds you've already experienced basically everything the game has to offer.
Best 2D Mario: World
It's colourful, vibrant, introduced Yoshi, improved on the flying vs the racoon leaf & full on 16 bit goodness!
Best 3D Mario: Odyssey
Its everything I wanted 64 to be (idk that game never clicked for me) & a milestone improvement over sunshine (although i do like F.L.O.O.D.)
IMO Mario Sunshine is a very spectacular and special Mario game! However, it's absolutely can be very odd and frustrating at times.
-Galaxy 1 and 2 in the top 3
-Galaxy is ranked over Galaxy 2
-Mario Game and Watch Slander
-Wonder outside of the top 5
Nice list, I just wish the Galaxy games were ranked higher
Y’all are crazy for putting Sunshine that low lmao
I will never understand the disrespect this game gets
My personal top 2 is that one as well. Those games are simply magical. However I'd surely put Odyssey above Galaxy 2
Very nice list.
My unique regards is that Mario Galaxy 2 is the greatest Mario 3D off all time and Super Mario World is correct the best one in 2D.
Another side note: I like Super Mario Land 2, but not beyond any of the New Super Mario titles. It’s good, but very short and limited.
Besides that, I agree with the list!
I shit you not I thought that was Grand Dad
How I rank all 25 Super Mario games (ports and re-release won't count except All-Stars which was a remake in collection form, not 3D All-Stars, all games had to have the words *Super Mario* together in the title for it to be counted so the original Mario Bros. and Mario Kart: Super Circuit wont be counted since there's no Super in Mario Bros. and Super and Mario are separated in Super Circuit):
1. Super Mario Bros. 3
2. Super Mario Bros. 4: Super Mario World
3. Super Mario Bros. Wonder
4. Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
5. Super Mario Odyssey
6. Super Mario Galaxy
7. Super Mario Sunshine
8. Super Mario 64
9. Super Mario Bros. 2 - Mario Madness
10. Super Mario Bros.
11. Super Mario All-Stars
12. Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins
13. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
14. Super Mario Bros. 2 - The Lost Levels
15. Super Mario Galaxy 2
16. Super Mario 3D World
17. New Super Mario Bros. U
18. New Super Mario Bros. Wii
19. New Super Mario Bros.
20. New Super Mario Bros. 2
21. Super Mario Land
22. Super Mario 3D Land
23. Super Mario Kart
24. Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3
25. Super Mario Run
kinda weird to include super mario rpg and super mario kart. they may have "super mario" in the title but... come on...
Of the games included on this list, my Top 5 would be:
1. SM World
2. SM Wonder
3. SM Odyssey
4. SM 64
5. SM Sunshine
"It's not without weaknesses" by saying Wonder is easy...is like incredibly low hanging fruit lol. Half of the Mario games here (even World) are easy as pie.
I thought that Wonder was noticeably easier than SMB1-SMW.
@@davidrich27 You can literally beat Mario 1 in less than 20 minutes. 💀
@@Rediscool9 That has literally nothing to do with difficulty, but go off.
Exactly. The only mainline Mario games I’d consider “hard” are The Lost Levels and Sunshine. I just find the idea of judging a mainline Mario game by its difficulty so inherently stupid because mainline Mario has almost never been difficult in the slightest.
@@davidrich27 It absolutely freaking does. If you can beat a game in less than 20 minutes, then your game isn’t hard, I’m sorry.
21. Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels
20. Super Mario Run
19. New Super Mario Bros. 2
18. Super Mario Land
17. New Super Mario Bros.
16. Super Mario 3D Land
15. Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins
14. New Super Mario Bros. Wii
13. Super Mario Bros. 2
12. New Super Mario Bros. U
11. Super Mario Bros.
10. Super Mario Bros. Wonder
9. Super Mario Sunshine
8. Super Mario Galaxy
7. Bowser’s Fury
6. Super Mario Galaxy 2
5. Super Mario 3D World
4. Super Mario 64
3. Super Mario Bros. 3
2. Super Mario Odyssey
1. Super Mario World
I very rarely agree with so many rankings on similar videos. I feel like I am understood. Sunshine would get a slight bump from me though
My top 5 would be:
1. Galaxy
2. 3D World + Bowser's Fury
3. World
4. Odyssey
5. 64 (Could be replaced by Wonder later on)
I'm too lazy to rank them all, but here's my Top 5:
1. Super Mario Odyssey
2. Super Mario Galaxy 2
3. Super Mario Bros. Wonder
4. Super Mario 64
Super Mario World is good but I wouldn't put it that high. (no spoilers) Too similar to SMB3 for one.
this is so incredibly based
Donkey Kong '94 is a 10/10 but it is absolutely not a mainline Mario platformer, you'd have to also include the first Mario vs Donkey Kong at that point considering how similar they are gameplay-wise.
