I agree on the 3DS! And a additional information is that this was the only system to receive a major UI improvement changing a lot of the look and feel. I don't dislike the Switch because is really fast and straightforward. But I do miss at least different colors AND the splash screen that we've had with Wii U. Sometimes I get tripped up going back to old consoles and trying to go to the home menu lol Also for me, what I miss most on switch isn’t themes or a unique style, but the music. The Wii music is so cozy 😊
I would spend a shocking amount of time just organizing my 3DS home menu every few months, just because I found it fun to do. That's a sign of a great menu! Wii definitely has the slickest control scheme, though! I wish smart TV devices like Roku had pointer controls. Their remotes used to have Gyroscopes in them that certain games used for pointer-controls, but no menus used them! Could have made navigating and typing on it a dozen times easier.
Jon i've been following your videos since the nintendo life days. Please, dont ever stop making videos. Im always excited to see what you have to say about games, history and stuff
Game Boy Colour has another feature on the loading screen not mentioned - different combinations of button pushes change the limited colours applied to a game boy game.
I honestly think the 3DS might be the best Nintendo system because of it's menu and customization alone. The switch is a close second because the games are so amazing but I really hope the "Switch 2" brings back a lot of 3DS customization
I really really REALLY want the Switch 2 to have more personality. Music, background animations, software descriptions, easier access to the Mii maker, 3DS/Wii U home app layout, etc.
Yah, that layout make more sense now that everybody have a smartphone. Besides, I think they should still have a quick play menu like the ones on the switch, maybe cartridge could even boot without menu.
I rank them: 1: 3DS - Just the best, love the themes, folders, sleep features, etc. Even for hundreds of games it still feels very easy to organize everything. I have two modded 3DSs with 500gb SD cards, the 3DS by far has the best mod community, tons of custom themes and homebrew apps 2: Wii U - The menu still impresses me, very gorgeous imo. I have a few hundred games installed on my Wii U, but unfortunately, the library just isn't very good 3: Switch - very sleek for a Nintendo console
I actually find the Switch’s menu to be kind of inefficient in a weird way, and that’s through lack of organization. All the games are there, yeah, but it’s just whatever was last used. And typically I have my systems Home Screen customized with some frequents and some games on the backlog, and the folders are there as well. It makes it so when I’m in the mood to play something it’s very easy to look around my library. The Switch just dumps everything at my feet and in order to get to the folders I have to go through a menu to get to the menus. I would also like for it to have a better theme but it’s the Switch’s lack of user freedom that really hurts it for me. I don’t often find myself going through my games on Switch anymore because it’s just not a pleasant experience. Maybe a theme would help by making it feel more lively but with these two elements working together it kinda kills the Switch menu for me. Moles.
You didn't mention the badges from Nintendo Badge Arcade on 3DS. I know they weren't a default thing, but they added even more customization and it was always so fun to see the different things you and your friends could make with them.
The Wii Home Menu is so nostalgic to me because of the music but the 3DS one is best because of the themes. I hope the next console will have a Home Menu similar to the prototype Switch Home Menu
Jon, I love how you also have the Dreamcast theme on the 3DS too. Also I would love to see you rank every PlayStation Home Menu, if only because I'm curious about your feelings on the XMB.
I mostly agree with the listing, but the Wii takes the number one spot imo. The channel aesthetic with the surprisingly fleshed out focus on music elevates the whole experience. It was so iconic that even the homebrew channel and USB loader apps followed suit. 3DS had that customizable element to it, which is cool, but it felt sterile compared to the Wii
I played Mole Mania for the first time ever a few years ago (as somebody who grew up in the GB/GBC/GBA era) and loved it so much! Possibly my favorite puzzle game ever made. Would love a remake or sequel.
I wish Nintendo had've continued with the channel theme on their newer consoles, as the Wii was a console you could (and would) turn on every day to do things like check the news or the weather. Presenting useful info on the home screen without needing to go into any apps paved the way for things like widgets on phone home screens, but also made you want to jump into those games because you could see when the last time you weighed in on Wii Fit or ongoing competitions in Mario Kart Wii
Home menues are one thing, but to me no boot-up screen with ever beat GBA where the letters are literally flying in your face and ending on thaat iconic **pling**
An underrated feature of the Wii is that you can save your Miis inside the Wii remote to take them places. Never seen the save file animations or SD screen though.
Great list, personally really hoping the next system combines the Switch’s efficiency with the aesthetics of the 3DS/Wii U’s menus. By the way did you know that hard working moles are good moles?

For GBC, I’d like to submit changing colour themes (pressing a direction and/or holding B) on the boot up screen as a bonus. Nothing else does that from what I’m aware (at least not a Nintendo platform).
To me the Wii takes 1st place because it is just insanely unique and fun to browse. The animated banners, the subtle background sounds just make it the best menu in all of gaming. Not to mention the most iconic shop tune.
There is one other issue with the Wii U, only but a few of us have run into. There is a literally ICON limit on the Wii U. So if you have a large HD for Wii U digital stuff, you may run into the fact you can't have that many games on one device. So you may have to split up the HD to multiple and swap between them in order to access other games. So I tend to have a library where I can't have them all on one HD at once, even though the HD is more than capable of holding my entire library.
I never knew the Wii’s classic controller could navigate the menus. Even as a kid, the novelty of navigating with the pointer remote wore off pretty quickly, and as a low-vision adult it’s an honest to god accessibility barrier to entry. Or at least it was. Thanks for the learning, Jonny-boi! Hopefully good condition/refurbished Wii classic controllers don’t go for too much.
You forgot to mention that the gameboy colors boot up screen is actually kind of a home screen where you can change the color preset of the games via the buttons during the boot up sequence. :)
For some reason, I'm getting an urge to play Mole Mania on the Nintendo Game Boy. This doesn't really have anything to do with this video, I just wanted to make people aware of this great, underrated game.
One of my favorite places to play on my GameBoy is in the mall. It really is a nice place for the GameBoy, you know, the mall. I wonder if anyone else here takes their GameBoy to the mall.
Well, I just about finished the video. I'll close the RUclips app on my Wii U right now, so that, I'll have more time to spend on my GameBoy at the mall.
Surprised you counted the 64DD and Satellaview, but the Super Game Boy, SGB2, and Game Boy Player got left out! Each had their own menus for borders, colors, and the like.
One small correction: on the Wii U menu, you can control it without the gamepad. You need to press X or 1 on your controller of choice and it will put the game selection on the big screen.
For me it's between the Wii and 3ds so I completely agree with you there. The GameCube menu is still a close 3rd though and that's just my nostalgia talking. Great video
Aside from how slow it was, I really liked the Wii U's home menu. I miss the MiiVerse _so_ much. I would love it if they revived it or gave us something like it for the next gen.
I once decided to play a Japanese only virtual boy game, and the opening screen was really freaky. Ominous red text on a black background that you can't read.
Don't forget that you can decorate the 3DS menu with badges! You can even use the badges as custom icons for your folders!
Didn’t even need to click on the video to know what number one was going to be. I really hope the switch 2 has a home screen similar to the 3ds.

One small correction: on the Wii U menu, you can control it without the gamepad. You need to press X or 1 on your controller of choice and it will put the game selection on the big screen.
I still can't get the music of some of the channels of the Wii menu out of my head. Especially the Wii Shop channel.
gamecube definitely has the coolest aesthetic
For me it's between the Wii and 3ds so I completely agree with you there. The GameCube menu is still a close 3rd though and that's just my nostalgia talking. Great video
Aside from how slow it was, I really liked the Wii U's home menu. I miss the MiiVerse _so_ much. I would love it if they revived it or gave us something like it for the next gen.
I once decided to play a Japanese only virtual boy game, and the opening screen was really freaky. Ominous red text on a black background that you can't read.
