- In part two of our side project, we continue the transformation of a 34 year old ex-library bus into a hotel on wheels/car transporter. In this part, we try and shed a little more weight from the truck by taking a look at what lurks beneath the floor...

Aahh FJ's. Fond memories of simpler times. I've owned a few FJ's and FX's. Even had an FJ ute. The first car I could afford was an FJ.

Admittedly, it was a bit creepy when Richard said "Believe it, baby" to Nik. I thought he was channeling his inner Camp Freddie at first. LOL
I agree :) It works to make the Escargot videos distinct in style from the others. Well… that and Nik not (yet) having re-manufactured the entire vehicle out of sheet steel and MIG wire.

Six litres and a hundred and ten horsepower..........in its own way that's pretty impressive, I'm fairly sure I could drop a match in six litres of fuel and get more power out of it.
12 valves, naturally aspirated, old injection tech, etc etc
Diesel fuel is not flamable at room temperature so nothing would actually happen. So yeah, you would indeed get more power than this old metal turd would.

haha, they just try to slide that one by.. probably 40 hours work went into that platform. I think i'm going to go hit them up on Patreon for that.

I really appreciate the behind the scenes effort put into breaking out all the rusty bolts and replacing them with new hardware, just to make the disassembly look so effortless! And the quality acting showing the faux surprise at how easy everything came out! This is why I support your efforts on Patreon
I have a suspicion that due to it being a mobile library, the round was cancelled every time it snowed so it's exposure to salt was limited.
It seemed to come apart like it had just rolled out of the factory.
Damn, that's actually a really good theory! Been a million years since I ever saw a library truck, but definitely don't recall ever seeing one in the snow.

Haha tbh I can't remember the last "Normal" garage/workshop I've been in where they had all that crap. You usually find it in those "Fitters" shops where everything gets painted every 3 months to make it look pretty.
Not saying it's safe just that most smaller places and old school garages just don't bother with it. I'm surprised that they even bother with gloves (my father's hands are like inch think leather because of this and 40 plus years in the trade lol)

I was just thinking that someone had clearly made *some* effort to maintain the poor bus - look at that nearly-new drag link! - and then you popped the radiator hose off.
Never mind.
I'm guessing the people who had the bus post-library had noticed the radiator leak and didn't want to put more effort in so they just topped things off with tap water to get rid of it / sell it to these guys or something. there's quite the mishmash of things that were taken care of and things that were half-assed, and i doubt the latter was the fault of the original owners (library use)

The brake line at 5:00 is the most marvelous thing I have ever seen. Reminds me of a South Main Auto video where the customer had barely-functional brakes (no pads at all, just metal to metal), drove it to the shop, and asked them to fix the AC!! In MY world, when the car needs a laundry-list of repairs before it will move, the first item is the brakes. Every. Single. Time. For every start-of-motion, there WILL be a stop-of-motion. My life's goal is to always accomplish that stop without harming any humans.

Those drag links and similar ball joint fixings.
If you get two hammers the same size and hit the mounting from both sides at exactly the same time the conical shape forces the ball joint shaft out as it has nowhere else to go.
The previous owners seem to have taken the engine out as the bolts were relatively new.
I'll have to give that a try on the next tie rod end i have to do on a honda LOL

Caught my old man doing exactly that recently, refuses to use anything other than a half inch ratchet.
I'm reasonably sure I actually have one of those in my toolbox here. I mean, I know I have a set of ½"-drive metric sockets, I'm just not sure if they go that small. :)
An M6 bolt (which I believe you're talking about, could be wrong) uses a 10mm socket. Most half inch drive socket sets do go down that small.
@@denisl2760 Generally when people say a metric size they mean the size of the head, a six mil bolt head usually the reserve of hose clamps and other small things where normally a quarter inch or 3/8 socket would be better just to limit the torque. Of course doesn't really account for long handled ratchets, power tools etc.
@@lemagreengreen I don't know about the layman's terms, but in a professional environment the proper term for a bolt with a diameter of 6mm and a head of 10mm is "M6".
Also the size of the drive end is not what limits the torque, the length of the ratchet handle is. You can easily adjust for that by gripping the ratchet closer to the head.
@@denisl2760 I think he was working on a Jubilee clip witha 6mm head. You're right that the M6 thing refers to the diameter of the bolt, but in practice people typically use the socket size when they are working with nuts/bolts. :)

It's so refreshing to hear a properly mixed audio track. Too many RUclipsrs decide that if they needed ear plugs to block machine noise, then their viewers should suffer the same discomfort.
And, you two don't need to be in a boyband at all, in order to get lucky so many times in a row!

Weather in the isles and all, this unit was decently well taken care of. Certainly better condition than anything i've seen of the similar age across the continent. Only recently we were inspecting for purchase a few similar Fords and some of the nut-ware was so rusted, it was merely a suggestion of a nut. So much so that the evaluator thought it was a riveted frame.
It's a good day. Now I've even got my boss [RojoDelChocolate] watching these videos. ;)

Good to see that the nuts and bolts were made of actual steel, rather than the chromed chocolate so beloved of many manufacturers.
I've been thinking since the start that the engine needs to go. An aluminium Napier Deltic (as used in minesweepers) should do nicely.

@@cambridgemart2075 I think (maybe wrong) that the aluminium crankcase was specific to the minesweepers, less likely to trigger magnetically triggered mines.
Replacing the subframe bushings in my Nissan was harder than that. What automotive god are you sacrificing virgins to for your good fortune?

as it was a library truck it prob had a lot of sitting about and mostly used in summer, no winter salt rust, plenty maint' and not as many miles/year as most trucks.
if only my old isuzu had been like this, it would not have taken me two hours for each bolt
I'm incredibly surprised how easily that heap of rust came apart. That's some serious black magic.
What they didn't tell you is that they originally found it sitting in a 3ft deep pool of penetrating oil.
It's voodoo guys. Has to be. They're transferring all the difficult nuts, bolts and fasteners to the viewers who watch them.
Really comforting listening to the noises and daft comments you guys make while working with right big stuff under a vehicle... I was beginning to think I was odd.
Bloody love this build. I had a 1987 0813 Cargo as my motorcycle race transporter for 10 years. Never let me down apart from a snapped throttle cable on the way home from Brands Hatch to Yorkshire. Still got home using mole grips on the snapped cable and my brother operating the throttle this way as I drove. Mega Truck. 👍
