  • This is a video on how we went about creating a lifting, lowering, movable hydraulic platform capable of supporting around a tonne. Nothing suitable was available to buy, so we made one. This is how we did it.

@44:00 I was thinking, "Thats smart, using the L-brackets as leaf springs, to push the bottom part firmly to the ground and in that way preventing it from rolling away on a uneven underground.....". Anyway, back to the video...😂😂😂👍

A great fabrication! I especially like your safety catch mechanism from a jackstand.
Just a note about welding.......please take it as helpful hints, and not criticism.
Solid wire MIG is welded vertically down. Horizontal MIG is generally welded forehand, such as you did for the cups. Welds should start from the outside leg of the angle iron, welding toward the corner. This helps prevent cracking at the outside edge, and allows the weld to gain more heat as you approach the corner., and lessens the chance of distortion. Again, this not criticism, but some knowledge I've gained in 50 years of welding and fabrication. Keep up the great work. I've enjoyed your projects immensely.

It should be noted that the cast iron portion of the jack stand you used as your safety catch was designed to operate in compression loading. It will be far weaker when used in tension. I would rethink that aspect of the build and see if you can use that piece in compression.

One of the smartest things I ever saw for moving a large piece of equipment about a shop was a plenum chamber under the machine. They had taken two plates that measured the same physical dimensions and built a box about 1 1/2" high. The lower plate had 1/8" or so holes drilled in a grid pattern and then they had put a small rubber flashing around the edge. When they wanted to move the band saw into position to cut material they just hooked the box under the saw to a shop air line and away they went on their home made hovercraft. When done, hook up the air line and back against the wall. The plates measured about 6' x 3' so if you could maintain a 2 PSI pressure under the plate you could move about 5000 lbs.

I like watching your videos on day where I'm feeling really good about myself. Brings me back down to my miserable and depressed reality.

I'm at 43:30, but I thought about this a few minutes ago. I can't believe you screwed up the caster install. That is a huge weak point. Maybe I'm missing something, but out there on those weak brackets it's not going to be durable. Guess I'll find out if I'm wrong. Looks like gravity and leverage is going to win.

Ok, just saw the result. Shocked you, "Tried it anyway.".

Also, why didn't you put it under the car the long way? Then you wouldn't have to worry about getting the balance point between the front and rear of the car. The video looks like it was a little tippy front to back. Just my thoughts. I guess what they say about engineers is true. Great at the theoretical, shat at real world? I'm getting to cocky over here alone naked with a bag of Cheetos and a keyboard. Be right back, gotta pour another.

Amazing build. With videos like this, could you let us know approximately how long it took you? Also, thanks for the gem on why you guys like using step drill bits. I noticed the deburring thing myself. I also like how you don't have to keep changing out bits to make a large hole.

Reminds me of my apprentice days in a metal shop, box section, angle iron cutting and very accurate holes. All we need is some chain drilling.

As always fantastic workmanship, and problem solving, reminds of me of when I was running my business, and we had to build most of our own production kit, I had some some very skilled guys like you, and they loved building new kit.
You have a true vertical lift, not an arc, like. I also liked the adopt and adapt safety mechanism, adopted from an axle stand, and adapted to your lift.
Thanks, now get back on to Binky.
