In the U.S. it's become an epidemic with people trading good reviews for free merchandise. Not so much with whisky, but with outdoor gear reviews I watch......
I for one, truly appreciate your honesty and integrity. You've been very helpful on my Malt journey.

Living in BC, Canada, most of these whiskeys are taxed to Hell and back. (As an example, the Ancnoc is currently $74.99. Bloody hell.)
At least I get to vicariously enjoy them via Ralfy's extensive descriptions.
    Thanks, mate! Keep 'em comin'!

These reviews you do certainly are a great find! Keep it up. I just wanted to share my excitement of the whisky journey I have just begun. At 39 years old, I know … Jack Daniels and Jim Beam is what I knew of whiskey up until a year or so ago. Side note: Milwaukee the malt Mecca of the Mid-West has focused only on beer, a lot of time wasted on beer and vodka tonic’s… My friend gave me a bottle of Aberlour A’bunadh as a gift. Needless to say a great friend and it blew me away in realizing what whisky could be. Some time went by, sort of forgot about it, then my wife bought me the book Whiskey Opus. The journey begins. I started collecting. My first purchases were based on not wanting to go down a road I’ve already been so I bought based primarily on curiosity. My first bottles were Powers signature reserve, Bowmore 12 y, Auchentoshan classic, Tobermory Ledaig and Elijah Craig. Not a bad first guess. The Auchentoshan really is growing on me. Haven’t opened the Ledaig yet but I got to say that is one eye-catching bottle. Since I found these videos I’ve purchased Highland Park 12y and loving every bit of this journey of which you make even better. Keep up the great hobby.
    Dylan

    Hi Ralfy.
You got yourself some great buys my friend! Salúte!
This Q. is all about consistency, wood/E150/Brand recognition!
Ralfy here at the MB we have always had an honest skepticism re. Miniatures vs Full Size OB's.
Now here today in 2014 the cat is creeping out of the bag!
March 1 we purchased a bottle of ChivasR12yo dated Nov 2013...it was on sale @ $28! & really not a terrible buy for the Bar.
Upon unboxing, the color was close to a JWB (clear bottle amber +2 or 3) OK understandable being a blend.
Now today I took a ride to the off-sales to poke around and there on the counter were a 12pk of CR12 minis.
Ralfy the color of these miniatures were that of a Laphroaig QC. (amber-1 to 0)
I bought one curious if I had mistaken the "look" of the 750ml bottle.
Well I got home and poured 2drams one of ea. side by side & the diff in colour was astonishing!!
What can possibly going on with Chivas Regal and this hugely inconsistent use caramel in these both Official Bottlings?
    Thanks Ralfy
BTW the miniature, more than a wee better!!
    cheers

Another absorbing vlog, I am in Edinburgh next week on holiday. If I fancy a certain whisky, but not sure if I want to buy it, I go around the whisky bars, buy a wee dram then decide, it can save you a lot of money. I Listen to other peoples recommendations, but the final judge simply as to be your own palate!

    Ralfy
Ardmore TC is great value, even here in Aus.
    - a pound/dollar is only worth what you deem it to be! Money and value are, to an extent, subjective - it is up to us to determine what is worth what - in whiskey as in all things. Thank you profusely for cutting through the bull and helping us get the most out of our malt-monies.
As for malt mentions, how about a shout out to all those Malty Malthusian Misanthropes - I know you are out there!
    Cheers from Canberra, Aus.

Hi Ralfy. I agree with your comments around whiskey being a good Tonic in moderation. My late Grandmother lived to a ripe old age of 93 and she loved her whiskey. The moment she went off it based on her Dr's advice she declined rapidly. Maybe a coincidence but that's how it happened.

I wish I had half the options you have. Here in the land of the free I can only buy from state owned stores. They only have about 5 single malts to choice from. A bottle of Oban is $95. It is illegal to mail alcohol to my state so the Internet is out. For any kind of options I have to drive about 150 miles to another state.

Is there a list somewhere of reasonably priced official bottlings that meet the "craft" criteria of 46%, natural color, and non-chill-filtered? In my experience it's mainly been Ardbeg and Springbank who have been champions of this, Laphroaig and Ardmore who probably still color their quarter cask matured offerings, and not many others...

  • @cgavin1
    @cgavin1 10 лет назад

Picked up a bottle of the Ardmore on offer in ASDA for lols. £26. Same price. I don't much like peated whisky (recent Taliskers and Laphroigs have been pretty poor offerings imho) but this was delightful. Not much of a finish but wonderful nose and a lovely palette.

Hi Ralfy! I regulary attend an appreciate your vlogs an some of those bottles are also in my shelf. I got a bottle of ardmore traditional cask from the local supermarked (in germany) but was a litte disapointed because my bottle has an unpleasant bitterness (more bile than bitter choclate) and in our whisky club it was regarded less attractive than some Islay whiskys.

Ralfy, you are a wise gentleman. I cannot determine if you brought that wisdom to your pursuit of the single malt or it came as a result of being a scotch advisor, but I have found that I like asking for opinions, but do not take them as gospel. Just a little story to that effect. I found a bottle of Balvenie 21 y/o Portwood for the cheapest price I could find in a three state area. The closest price to it was $23USD while the furthest away was $62 USD withe average price difference of roughly $45 USD. I Went to many stores and did my due diligence online. So while price and quality maybe divergent for taste, the fact remains that I asked questions, developed a list, checked it twice and my nascent experience of buying single malt has been much more fulfilling. Maybe you should be a guru and open up a Scottish ashram?😄😄😄😄😄

Stunning review, ralfy. Composed, mature and informative. I don't drink whisky much at all myself but I think it's sth I will take up more in the future. When I drink it, it's Chivas Regal 12yo although that can be changed. The local alcohol shop has Ardbeg pitched at 330PLN (around 70 pounds). I guess it's a blow your socks off peat bomb and not recommended for a malt beginner. Would that be a fair assessment? Anyway, it's great to learn about whisky, esp being as I am a Scotsman. Keep the reviews coming :)

You know what really instigated the Revolutionary War? A British intention to honour their agreements with Native Americans and halt westward expansion of the colonies when a great deal of the colonial elite stood to make a lot of money in such expansion and the land speculation it would entail. It's another angle that usually isn't taught in school.

Malt454 The strong typically demand growth. Considering the British created one of the largest empires in human history they are a perfect example and aren't innocent to this concept and the Americans understood this as well.

ESA Indeed, and the greedy typically demand profits. My point is that if American motives were to be seen as reasonable, we'd hear about more about that aspect of causation for the Revolution, instead of the mythologized version of the war with which most are familiar today. But patriots and heroes fighting foreign oppression is an easier sell than American elites looking to supplant the government to make themselves even wealthier.

Malt454 Yes, I suppose propaganda utilizes the same characteristics as religion to a sense. People are capable of doing incredibly illogical things in the name of ideology and country, governments and the ones in power know this well and have been using it for thousands of years. Americans, however, became really good at marketing ideology and thankfully most of it is beneficial.

ESA The beneficial nature of American ideology is, of course, in the eye of the beholder; the ideology of Manifest Destiny resulted in the destruction of native cultures and, for being so much in favour of democracy, the US has worked against its spread in other countries where democracy and self rule was considered inconvenient to American interests. The question of the whether American ideology has been of NET benefit to the world is a very interesting one; what would a parallel timeline of history look like with the USA absent?
