Ralfy u are a gem, a gent, a legend
"Brought tears to me eyes." Great videos Ralphy!
Thanks again Ralfy I have learned the value once more of time, patients, perseverance, fun, and experimentation.
I would never have dreamed to spend the time or had the bravery to add that much water to a whisky. I am humbled that you choose to give us your experience and time for our own malt moments.
Thank You.
Don't collect whisky - drink whisky. Collect glassware.
Great talk, Ralfy! Good round up of solid advice!
Great video Ralfy, VERY informative. Thanks so much for sharing all your advice.
Thanks Ralfy. I didn't know how prevalent the fake whiskys were in the collecting business. It brings tears to my eyes too just hearing this. This is why I watch your episodes.
I have a hard time "collecting" whiskies...I tend to drink them too much.
Amen. I don't even care if it's rare, just so long as it's tasty enough to justify the price.
I agree, it’s meant to go down the gizzard, not sit on a shelf.
@@evankeefer5321 Every single one of my whisk(e)ys are open.
And I wouldn't have it any other was.
With my limited budget it's hard to really collect whiskies AND music. I have about half a dozen of open bottles. All of them bought carefully after reading and watching reviews to see if they compliment my taste.
You've hit the nail on the head here ralfy and thanks for confirming what I needed to know
Priceless advice. Thank you very much
I remove the labels from my single malt bottles and paste into a binder as a reminder of the malts I've enjoyed. Interestingly I've noticed that the 'branded' versions tend to come right off......basically anything from Diageo. Whereas bottles from 'craft' distilleries have their labels affixed much more strongly. The new Glen Garioch and Springbank, notably, had labels that were impossible to remove. Had to cut the labeling off the box to paste into my album.
I'm definitely gonna start collecting whiskey. Not to make money, just cause whiskey is epic!
How’s the collection going?
Great advice all around Ralfy!
love the accent! love your knowledge.
Malty Mandarin Speakers!! Ralphy! I might get my hand on a Springbank 12 Oddbins!! Really excited!!
There is more truth in this ten minute presentation than in many others two or three times as long. Ralfy speaks from the heart AND the head, each in appropriate ratio, on one topic after another. Would that this man would endeavor to launch the world's finest single malt brand ever devised. Bloody hell, he says more sensible truth in five minutes than most flannels speak in a lifetime. 'Nuff said. Carry on, Ralfy, carry on.
Just noticed your £40 Highland Park goes for £150 at TWE
It's funnier to drink than sell, though!
I really miss those beautifull Highland Park bottles
Excellent, wise advice.
Hi Ralfy again (part 2/2 !)..I like the way you focus on "drink it, don't sell it" (I hate speculation about whisky). So many things to tell. Unfortunately the web site will start first in french language but I hope to create a small special english section too at first....Will let you know on time (...).
So, again, congrats for your work/videos... !!
Take care & ...Slainthe !
Quite impressed with the economic analyses contained in this video.
Great video. Would love to see a new video on this subject.
A very nice and informative video. I'm thinking of starting to collect whiky's (although just because I am nuts about Japan i'd like to start collecting Japanese whisky's)
You're advice on keeping them for drinking is the best there is, it would be a waste not to drink them. I recently was given a bottle of Karuizawa 12Y which I find very very pleasant to drink and I'll probably go out and buy some more of them, just because I like it and you'll never know how long the quality will be available
Hey Ralfy. Great info as always! Say, I would like some advice on a planned purchase. I have been drinking single malts for a couple of years now but I have never had a heavily sherried single malt before. The pickings around here are pretty slim as far as single malt scotch goes, but there is one store that is carrying the Aberlour A'bunadh. I remember your review for this whisky and was wondering if you would recommend it as a good "initiation" to sherried whisky.
I concurred. YOU are good.
Maybe its better to collect for a "special day", buy a bottle when your kid is born, and open it 18/21 years later to share their first drink with them...
I got a bottle of 18 year old Glenfiddich when my son was born. I opened it to celebrate his birth. 18 years later on his birthday he finished the bottle(still tasted very good). I am now using the bottle as an infinity bottle that will be passed onto him so the bottle will always be a part of his life.
I got a bottle of Kilchoman 100% that I'm saving to try with the 8 y/o when it comes out in a couple of years. Sounds like a fun thing to do.
Ralfy (and other malt mates): any thoughts on collecting a few bottles of Glenlivet Nadurra 16, a discontinued expression? Not in terms of "rare" to be sold for hundreds/thousands (I realize this was mass produced), etc. Just in terms of some appreciation in value to swap later, i.e. maybe for another bottling that would cost me more money out of pocket? A local shop has a few for $75. I already have a couple stashed just for drinking. Given that this has batch codes and bottling dates and varying abv, perhaps some people are keen on collecting the different ones? Thanks in advance. I wouldn't know where to try to sell or swap :) Not even sure if it's legal in the US with the stringent liquor control.
I try to collect whisky but I drink it too fast
Ralfy im 22and ive just got into whisky, just been through some 10 year jura, found it okay. But I've had better I'm new to single malts and would like to know what's the best of the budget options as I can't spend 50 plus pounds. Thanks mate !!
I love it!
Just found you and subbed, this is gonna be good.
Started collecting Whiskey and have about 12 bottles, half of which I can see are already gaining in value. But if you are going to collect a particular bottle, collect one youve already tasted. I llike his approach to collecting. I say do both, drink and collect
Agreed, if you come across a good value that happens to be a good dram, it's worth stashing away. Worst case scenario: you'll have some nice whisky to drink.
Ralfy, love your content, thanks for the insightful info! When collecting whiskies, is there a difference between collecting the 700ml European bottlings vs the 750ml US bottlings? How does that difference affect value? Cheers.
A serious collector would have both bottles in the collection.
I'm a designer and it would be very easy to make a lable that uses a holographic backing so when you rip it off half the lable sticks to the bottle and the other half gets removed. For those who are younger Xbox and PS4 do this tamper lable inside the systems so if someone opens it you as a second buyer know it's been tamper with
The situation has even hit bourbon with the recent craze for Stitzel-Weller bourbon since that distillery was closed in 1992. Bottles of Pappy Van Winkle disappear from shelves as soon as they get delivered to stores. Now I'm not sure how much gets consumed but from the bottles that crop up on eBay, I'll say a significant amount is being hoarded.
@MagnusFender try something from the loweland, like Auchentoshan. I think it's nice to learn things by regions (i am wine geeks LOL).
I can't even keep them for so long... they call my name, truly.
Cuban cigars (Habanos SA) have been battling counterfeits for decades. A number of similar security features could be used by whisky producers. That said a new Cuban release comes out and within weeks there are rather convincing counterfeits available, labels and all.
Can you review Tullibardine 60 year old?
Hi Ralfy, indeed whisky is meant to be drink and shared ;-)
I only have tried 2 cask strength i.e aberlour a'bunadh and spring bank 12 yrs. I am gonna get another bottle at the airport, which one would you recommend: ardbeg 57.1 (I guess different bottling then the one you just finished on this video?), 54.2 or a talisker 57d North. thank for your input on this one.
Ralfy, are there any whiskies available now, that you would recommend buying, due to raising prices or dropping quality? I've heard you mention Ardbeg many times, but I'm curious if there are any others you'd recommend picking up a bottle or two of and keeping them for another day. I'm crossing over from "buying to drink now" to "buying to have for later" and I'd love to hear your suggestions. Thanks!
I have one of those bottles of HP - bottled for a liquor store here in Texas. It's from cask 2820 - is that the same as yours?
Hi Ralfy, can't wait for the Compass Box reviews. When will you upload them?
yet another episode of Ralfy TV.... my favorite show...
One of the very funniest reviews! "With yoo-rine. With paraquat." A+
Does anyone know methods for buying whisky in Canada (British Columbia)?
i agree with you, whisky is for drinking because in the end it doenst matter how many things you own you are gonna leave this world with nothing. Many things marketing have done with whisky relating it with luxury, success etc etc but is nothing but a beverage, one or two glasses of a good whisky at night , thats the good spirit I think.
Ralfy I keep seeing on scotchwhiskyauctions they have minis selling for more (sometimes double) than a full-sized bottle of the same stuff, what's going on there?
Looking at that Highland Park, simple traditional bottle, desirable and collectible. Modern Highland Park - kitschy bottles that likely won't be collectible, despite paying all the money to design it.
14:30 buying an open bottle of whisky at auction or anywhere is like using an open condom lol just something nobody should ever ever do, no matter how good the price is
Great advice, Ralfy! Loads of info that all collectors need to know. I also second the notion to visit Whiskyfun and read up on all the ways to spot fakes. Great information there as well!
Another danger about buying collectible spirits on ebay is their policy that states "The value of the item is in the collectible container, not its contents" as well as "...any incidental contents are not intended for consumption". Caveat emptor indeed!
does it make sense collecting relatively young 10/12 yr olds?
Thanks again Ralfy for ur informative review on collecting.Question for u,,,,iam looking to purchase a bottle of Brora 25 yr,where I live its going for $499 Can.Is it a smart buy to add to the collection.???cheers to the aqua vitae.
Hey Ralfy. What do you think about this craze over bottlings of Port Ellen? I think Port Ellen is a great whisky but not nearly worth the price going for at auction, especially when you could get 3 Broras for the price of one Port Ellen.
@DrForester54 That is a great whisky, however, realize that it is bottled at cask-strength and is a sherry-monster. If you do buy it and find it a bit strong, don't hesitate to add a bit of water to it.
I just received Octomore 4.1 167ppm... i am a little afraid since its sitting on my whiskey shelve.
id like to start grabbing a couple of bottles to put away, what I'm wondering is if i have a small dram of each and then reseal should i expect any change in the bottle? its such a small amount of air in the bottle after that, is it worth worrying about or should i subdue the temptation to try a drop when i first buy them? thanks
It's not an issue. Whisky doesn't go 'off' as such. Just never put it in the fridge, that can make them go cloudy and not nice
Well, there is that issue of oxidization which changes the flavour over time, especially with more air and less whisky in the bottle. He has a few videos covering exactly that topic - how to keep open bottles...
Have you tried Cazadores Anejo tequila? I just bought a bottle and was impressed. It has many characteristics in common with Scotch single malt whisky. I'm sure you'd appreciate it. It's relatively inexpensive, and worth every penny.
Hey Ralfy, would you recommend collecting independent Bottles from lost distillerys, or just buying originals. Thanks a lot
. . . best to buy both, so long as they are interesting and not fakes.
It's really weird how the SWA made a big fuss on inner staves when the American bourbon industry said nothing when Maker's Mark did the exact same thing to make Maker's 46.
If your local whisky shop ever gets a single cask of whisky, buy a bottle if you have the money. Not only are they collectible (since they come from a single cask) but the store owners had to have tasted the whisky before they bought the cask so they know it's good (make sure the store is reputable).
That Highland Park looks exactly like the bottle that the guys from Malt Reviews reviewed and reccomend
Ralfy, Last night I had the 1992-2007 Murray Mcdavid Auchroisk. It was unlike anything I have had before, and I really loved it. I was wondering if you could point me in the direction of something similar.
I already wonder if I am truly drinking the real brand or a bootleg, now you made my paranoia wrost. Thanks.
Is Lagavulin a good choice for a collection?
. . . yes, not not poor quality 16yo's ! Jazz Fest and Feis Ile bottlings are more collectable !
Hey Ralfy! Cheers from Buenos Aires. You are my guide in my recently discovered malty-madness! How do you feel about Bruichladdich 12 yo Second Edition...do you think it´s worth collecting? Thanks a lot and keep your good old malty advices!
yes, quite tasty, and the Distillery now produces more gin, and less whisky.
Thanks!
ralfy, can you do an episode about the history of whiskey? Starting 600 years ago or some such? It would be fun to hear you talk about that with maybe some of your own personal anecdotes thrown in.
You malty mandromeda!
Bloody great review as always my malt mad buddy. I only buy through TWE (love their online store) so i should be safe unless i cop a "man in the middle" type attack. lol cant see that happening though
Going to rip a seal off a Yamazaki tonight
Hi Ralfy!
Majk from Sweden here. I am a true fan of yours.
Love your reviews, and watch everyone with big intrest.
I have recently come along a Tobermory 15 years old, and I havent opened it yet.
Have you tried it? Can u please do a video review of tobermory?
Oh and a malt mention from Sweden: Hello you Malty Marvelous Maltlovers from all over the world... Keep up the good work! / Majk
@MagnusFender You must try Talisker 10yo!
dont make me panic ralfy, is uigeadail running short? that one's quite high on my "to buy" list but i'm still waiting for some better days (in terms of money) to pick that up! would be quite a shame if prices went up a lot now :<
...i hope that was just an example there!!
Ralfy, would you put the links for spotting fakes in your video description?
Also, I would like to hear a JW Gold Label review, I had a bottle and rather liked it...
would you want to post something like a list of reliable online outlets for good whisky? maybe just a few you have had some good experiences with.
I really thought that Mctears was a sensible business... makes my heart cry.
@MagnusFender bruichladdich 10.....changed my life.
Many people ask me if I am going to ever sell my whisky and my response is No I collect to drink one day! I like to think in a few years time I can drink a bottle that only has a limited amount released and I might have only one of a handful!
Totally non sequitur, but Ardbeg makes pretty bottles/labels.
10:20 hoping Ralfy is still planning on doing this
@MagnusFender bruchladdich 10.....changed my life.
11:40 oohhh nooo!!!
oh hang on...lol!
@MagnusFender Since you have tried a younger Ardbeg, but a more mature Lagavulin, why not try an older Ardbeg? I have to disclose that I am an unabashed Ardbeg fan, but it still makes sense, I think, to compare comparably matured examples of similarly situated producer (such as Lagavulin and Laphroaig and Ardbeg). They won't taste the same, but you may learn something about the different producers' styles.
Hey Ralfy, I need another recommendation.
So far I have bought and tried: Lagavulin 16, Highland Park 12, A small HP 18 sample, Aberlour A'bunadh, Ardbeg 10, JW black, Poit Dhubh 12 and Yoichi 10.
I have learned fast and furiously about Whisky, and I am loving it!
What do you think I should try next?
Magnus
Howdy Ralfy, I found myself a bottle of Compass Box The Spice Tree in my city ! However, the packaging are different. The box background is black with gold colour tree graphics. And the label say Blended Malt Scotch Whisky. Are we talking about the same bottle here ? What would this bottle rated ? Worth collecting as your white box version ? Thanks Malt Mate.
The one you've got is the newer Spice Tree without the staves. Just because they had to take out the staves due to the SWA throwing a tantrum. Not really worth 'collecting', but worth a drink!
Matt Bailey Thanks Matt. To make things more interesting, I now have two bottles of Compress Box The Spice Tree. First one is Blended Malt, and the second one is Vatted Malt. What is the difference ? I get the impression that Vatted Malt bottling come first, then changed to Blended Malt ? And the physical bottle is shorter (by 1/2 in).
@ralfystuff you cannot imagine how my mood went from "$%&§**##§!!" to "
as usual..when money gets involved...the fun is gone and the greed takes over....
whiskeys are faked just like fake cuban cigars
It seems that fashion whiskey is here to stay. The problem is that the prices are really crazy this year 2014 ... the karuzawa already cost 2000 ... is a closed distillery, but it will be worth the money? To 2000 can buy a good used car will be ... this is not an investment bubble? It seems to me that this madness will continue ...
Ralph apparently there is a market now for collecting interesting fakes - they know its a fake but the label or bottle looks good, or could be a one-off.
Hi Ralfy...long time I wanted to write you but currently busy with lots of things, inc. last but not least, a whisky web site (hopefully ready in a few months)....I'm enjoying lately a lot of your reviews and wanted to know if you will be agreeing me quoting your video blog in there ? I love you all scottish people (when I meet you in Paris Whisky lives or in Scotland or read you, etc..) for your comitment in whisky (trying to do as much as I can to speak about whisky here in France (...).
As relevant as ever.
15:24 - I assume you meant to say MORE tamper resistant, not LESS tamper resistant.
I had no clue big clive was your brother
Hi ralfy
I just wanted to let you know that as far as I know ebay has never sold whiskey to my knowledge, I have a ebay store, and I sell coins, old and new, I've had a store for 20 + years and have only seen empty whiskey bottles 🍼 for sell, maybe you can enlighten us on where 🤔 you see whiskey for sell on eBay !!!
this video didn't age well.. Ralphy just bought an old opened whisky at auction and did a review on it.
Do you hear me saints?!!!!
@ralfystuff +1 from me. Interested in gold label. :)
Johnnie Worker Red Labial whisky. Fine Chinese knock off.
@ralfystuff +1 from me. Interested in gold label. :) Just making it known!
Oddbins. Jesus. We're in time travel territory.
Love Ralfy, but the bank thing is daft.
can you imagine that....buying what you thought was a highly collectable, only to discover that you've bought a bottle of someones pish!!!!
