I truly appreciated this blog Ralfy. All the content is valuable, but the end portion about what constitutes a rich life is something people need reminding. Including me. Cheers Rob
These ‘extras’ are extra valuable! Cheers Ralfy 👌😊🥃!!
I appreciate your philosophy of enjoying, collecting, and (most of all) sharing good whisky. Cheers
Words of wisdom Ralfy, sometimes we need reminding. Sincerely, Ossie
I loved how you stated that the Rosebank was, 'tasting your history'. I wonder how many would get that? A poignant statement that I found excellent as a cause for collecting a favorite bottle, or four. The wife and I have 3 bottles of a wine we tried on our first trip together to a winery. Its likely never going to be valuable, but we see it in the rack, we remember the good time together, and we never have to open the bottle to do so. It was purchased as a set of 4 bottles. We drank one when we got back. The rest may never be drunk.
One of your best EXTRAs yet. Great topic and superb flow. Thanks
Thanks for the video Ralfy and especially the chalkboard section. My partner has always been very supportive of my whisky collecting but now she also has verifiable and justifiable reasons concisely written to further support my healthy habit.
One of my all-time favorite videos of yours Ralfy. Simply wonderful.
Enjoyed the information and the malty-wisdom. I kept hearing the birds happily chirping outside between sentences, and it made me a bit nostalgic for home. The bothy, with all its drafty draw-backs, seems a nice sanctuary nonetheless. Cheers, sir!
So much information in this - so knowledgeable! I've subscribed, might take me a while to get through the back catalogue though!
You have a great perspective on life. It's not just about the whisky, it about the friendships established. I was one of your earlier Pateron supporters. Why? You were honest and didn't take freebies from the manufacturers. I don't always agree with you, but you are always honest. Keep going my friend.
A bothy - a nice place to get blootered/bleezin after reviews :) Good review, ralfy :)
Good Morning Ralfy.
The Foursquare 2004 runs ~ $65 USD the few times I've had the privilege of picking it up. Nice to see you recommending something I have had the pleasure of tasting/enjoying/acquiring.
another great pair of vids Ralfy. Cheers!
btw - Can't wait to see you make your own (I'm guessing that's the what the barrels of rum are gonna be for eventually...)
I am thankful that you share your knowledge!
We’ll said Brother…. I’ve listened to you and followed my gut, I have a Wonderful
Collection
Bright threads in the tapestry of your life! Love your videos
As I am watching this video for the 2nd time now, I am enjoying my 2nd dram of an 1970s 75 proof Haig Gold Label that I had bought at an online auction about a year ago, and that I had opened about a week ago, and I so completely agree with everything that' s been said.
Lovely dram by the way :)
wonderful advice and anecdotes!
I’ll probably never bid on whiskies at auction. However, I am more than happy to buy and hold whiskies that I can sell them at auction one day. Thanks for all the info and ideas on what to acquire Professor Ralfy. You are a gentleman and scholar.
I bought two bottles of Macallan edition no.4. I figured it might make for a decent investment 10 years down the track.
I also bought 3 of the Rosebank in your vlog 2 from the shop and one at auction drank them all many years ago but I like the 2004 foursquare so much I bought 15 bottles I've drank 3 but I think it's one of those bottles that don't come around much at £50.00 and one that reminds me of the turn of the century when for £50-£100 you could get exceptional whiskies . Certainly would be good to open a bottle in 20 years time and remember yesteryear. Let's be honest it's quality for the price made my decision to buy so many as it's probable but not guaranteed that it will rise in value. Cheers!
Since lock down I've been taking my whisky collecting more seriously .............. thank you Ralfy for alerting me to a most important pitfall ..... 19:30
Thanks Ralfy for those words of wisdom!
Hey Ralfy great Video ! I have a whisky collection of 53 bottles ! One of my favorite bottles in my collection , is a 21 year old Vintage Rye , from KBD ( Willett Family) ! I think its very rare ! Cheers , Chris from Bremen/Germany
Looks like it was very cold at the time he recorded this vid.... can tell from the mist coming out of his mouth 🥶 thanks Ralfy for your dedication!
Great video as always. I have a few Macs in the cupboard but its as you say, making a profit is all about timing and having an understanding of what the market wants.
Another hobby of mine is age tea and the regional auctions popping up in Hong Kong and China reminds me of the early days of scotch whisky before in garnered an international appeal and following. Interesting
Great video Ralfy! Lots of truth in this, wholeheartedly agree with your view about collecting
Great info Ralfy thanks !!
Thanks Ralfy!!
Thanks Ralfy! 🥃
You made my day twice ✔️✔️🤙🏼
Thanks to your advice in your previous videos about collecting whiskies, i've started my collection. It's all about fun, about what I like, what I'll like to drink in a few years time when I won't be able to buy these bottles anymore, simply because they perhaps won't exist anymore. And so I'm focusing on good and affordable whiskies, and there are many, no need to buy fancy and expensive bottlings from (overated?) disitlleries. I'll drink these bottles in 20 years or so, or swap them, even sell some to buy something else. I'm just having fun doing it, I think that's the more important part.
. . . happy to help with the malt-moments !
About cognac... It's legal to use artificial coloring . Also it's legal to ad sugar and la boise is common additive they use in Cognac region. It's common misconception that cognac is somehow "pure" from additives compared to the other brandy outside of Cognac region and outside of France, but it's just not
I'd even say most officially bottled Cognacs contain E150a. It's stated on virtually every box + bottle sold in Germany.
. . . I am finding out more about this, comment will be made in a future vlog from the Bothy !
ralfydotcom Good starting point :
le-cognac.com/tout-savoir-sur-le-cognac/l-elaboration-du-cognac/assemblage.html
... around 1.5 up to 2 grams of sugar are also added... Even in very expensive XO cognacs
www.diffordsguide.com/encyclopedia/1000/bws/cognac-how-cognac-is-made-and-what-from
I really hate that. But it's probably more for color consistency rather than subjective darkness, because aged cognac is likely darker than scotch, because of new casks. The few XO that I tried were sweet as candy.
I love Ralfy’s rule of 3. Buy one for yourself. One for a friend or to make a new friend. And one to maybe sell at a later date🥃. Cheers
Preach!..such wise words here, and you share my idea of real profit!..cheers! 🥃
Tits up! I love Ralfy. He should do a "Tits up" investment value estimate along with a malt score for each bottle.
For chemistry folks, how about “all you Malty Moles”?
1 mole = 6.022140857×10^23 molecules. A mole of whisky🤔👍
If it's "Hello Malty Mole = 6.022140857 x 10^23 Molecules!", yeah.
. . . now on the M-mention List under 'scientific' ! thanks.
ralfydotcom Thanks ⚗️👍
I'd go "malty molar mass of molybdenum" or something like that, but that train has now sailed ;)
Oh man.........chemistry isn’t supposed to be punny! 🤪
I like this glendronich. I got it by a price of Glenfiddich 12y.
You're an artist Ralfy.
I've taken to watching your reviews with my eyes closed, so I don't miss a word.
Why do I get the idea that you have walked on quite a few floors, that have uneven planking?
Sapphire Sword, he's a really good actor too!
Looks damn cold there
Ha, I open all of mine . So I’ve got around 200 opened bottles . Most are still full
Great video, thanks
Got my hands on a couple of Kilkerran 12 on sale from a highend liquorshop around here. I guess the collection never ends :-)
. . . good selection there !
Thank you, Don Corleone.
Excellent video as always, and nice to see some Foursquare featured! Speaking of which... any rum reviews in the pipeline..?
. . . yes, in a few weeks !
I loved that one.
I like what you have to say! Most people don't speak true like that.
Thanks Ralfy, where to buy all these liquors? trip to Scotland, are some of them at stores, the ones that we will open when is the moment...
Ohh, now I want whisky! :D
Now the price and rarity of Elmer T Lee will go up some more.....lol
Guess Ill have to get the three remaining bottles of the shelf of my local store and hold onto them.
Ralfy, my local store has a rum called Sea Wynde which is a blend of pot stilled rum from Guyana and Jamaica bottled at 92 proof. I find it pleasant enough to drink but it hasn't been bottled since 2010.
Are you expericed enough with it and is it worth collecting?
. . . it is not really a collectable yet, but if no longer available, it will inevitably go up a bit in value.
Excellent!
Does anyone know who the New York independent cognac bottlers he mentions are?
Quality vlog 👍🇨🇦
Hi, Ralfy, just a quick piece of your expert experience, I have opened a bottle of Arran amarone wine cask a couple of months ago and it was beautiful, but I have noticed that when I have gone back to it the whisky has really changed, as it has got much hotter and peppery.and is getting hotter, is there anyway I can stop this as I preferred it early on.by the way loving the vlogs pal, keep up the good work malt mate...
I have a man-crush Ralfy. Drinking distilled spirits and spitting deep wisdom.
top notch video
Love your channel Ralfy! What happened to the bottle of "scotch whisky" on your shelf?
. . . these lovely old 'basics' come and go !
Wise words.
People better start getting into rum now. Alot of the sourcing bottlers like Plantation are releasing game changing rums. It going to get hard sourcing bottles soon enough.
Don't encourage them Eric. There are some great rums right now as you say. My wish is that they can be enjoyed by genuine rum appreciators and not speculators hoping to flip the stuff.
Note to self: 1. mortgage everything and invest in rum 2. Get ready for divorce 3. Drink up investment of rum to aswage grief 4. Start over with new wife. Lol!
True words of wisdom! Always ask yourself what is the reason you are doing things the way you are doing them. Even the Pope is practicing and sharing this advice, apart the drams of spirit. But hey, someday someone will discover that in the Vatican the Swiss guards and some cardinals had a very nice collection of whiskys ;)
. . . a little wisdom compensates for many failings !
Malty mackerels! (A fishy malt mention hahaha)
. . . now on the M-mention List, thanks !
Dear Ralfy, love the channel! Great Collection!
Would you be able to review, when you will have available time, the Singleton of Dufftown 12 Years? I would truly appreciate it since I'm really interested to know your professional opinion on this whiskey.
. . . I will look out for it !
Great video, Ralfy! Always enjoy your offerings. I am in need of your advice though. I'm visiting Scotland from the US in August and I can only bring back 3 bottles.
What are your recommendations??
Any distilleries in Highlands/Speyside I can't miss out on? Thanks in advance, malt mate!
. . . Benromach and Balvenie.
ralfydotcom thanks! I'm putting them on the list! Which bottles do you recommend for the 3 I can bring back with me to the US?
. . . ask about "distillery only" bottles on your visits, they will be unique and rare, unavailable elsewhere.
ralfydotcom thanks Ralfy! You are the best. Cheers from Philadelphia.
Rafly... How the heck do you actually sell a whisky you have collected? We don't really have auctions here and I cannot legally sell it. Not sure how to unload something if I wanted to!
Bidding on some bottles RIGHT NOW!
I'm having FUN already!.
I love it..
Enjoy your losses!
Win Win Win!
Ralfy, could you recommend a whisky that is comparable to the Glendronach 15 in regard to smell and taste?
I ain't Ralfy but my advice would be the Glendronach 18.
. . . try Glenfarclas 21yo ! different, but sherry-fuelled.
Thanks a lot, mate!
Could you review an available canadian whisky?
Or a video about Calvados/Cognac, and what to look for maybe?
Great video as always, cheers!
Ralfy is not a fan of cider (let's not go there) and therefore not Calvados. But look out for XO versions. My personal favourite district is Domfrontais, which have an significant pear note.
bøf medløg Oh man.....I’m crushed.....doesn’t like cider?!? Doesn’t like Calvados? What the Hell? That just ain’t right man.....it ain’t right I’m telling ya! ☹️
Ralfy. They are allowed to add colouring to Cognac.
. . . I did not know that, so a comment will be made on my next vlog from the Bothy !
Unfortunately it's not collectors who scoop up Elmer T Lee Bourbon among other Bourbons it's speculators trying to turn a quick profit on the hype. I have had a bottle of ETL, good stuff but not worth much more than the retail price IMO.
Would love to see what that Rittenhouse 25 year Rye you reviewed back in 2013 (#396) would go for at auction now, 3k pounds I would imagine.
"Hello Magnificent Maestros of Malt"
. . . no on the M-mention List, thanks !
Rosebank Flora & Fauna 👍
Sadly, in Canada it's illegal to sell any sort of alcohol in any way.
Scotch Whisky On man, time to move to a country with no law!
that Cognac is it from France (Champagne region)? If not then should it be called Brandy?
Yes, Petit Champagne probably, because they got a 30 year old version here, in our local Cadenheadshop.
Times change. Vodka doesn't. But it does change you! ;)
Alex K at first you drink it and then it drinks you
Great video hut think that cognac does not have to be natural colour by law?
. . . your right, I just checked on this ! . . . not pleased.
The first time i noticed was on an M&S XO Cognac- they listed the ingredients, well done for transparency. I visited cognac a while ago and met Mr Giraud of Paul Giraud cognac- he said there is no sugar box or caramel box in his distillery. Good authentic stuff!
Really enjoyed that ralfy,I want to treat myself for my 40th birthday can you recommend something nice
Stephen Dunne happy belated birthday, I try to treat myself to a bottle I had my eyes on for awhile but had no particular reason to buy yet, example a Laphroaig cask strength, hope you got a good one for yourself !
I gottah a inkling that these pandemic whiskeys made in 2020 maybe worth something in 20 yrs or so... ?
You are a genius!
I will now stop worshiping Einstein. You are above this American.
hey Ralfy.
boy wat a dif jus 6mo makes n the world o whsky.
bought a botl of JWB
n wow...not the same
AT ALL!! ruf shyte m8...surprisinly ruf.
ges I'l jus wait anothr 6 mo...c if their stuf gets bac 2 std.
cheers
Ralfy, I am beginning to see Scottish independent bottlings of single malt in the middle of the North American continent but they are much more expensive than the official bottlings.
Robert Rogers I'm in New York, and the only local shops that carry things like Signatory Vintage are much more expensive than the official bottling.
Todd: What is your favorite shop/shops? My brother in law lives in Manhattan, my wife and I make the trip once a year. I suspect independent bottlings are higher due lack of availability.
Robert Rogers I'm just north of Westchester county, so not close enough to the big city to be perusing shops. On the other hand, if your brother has a few malt-mates he can purchase bottles with simultaneously (3 or more), he should check out thewhiskybarrel.com. They're a UK company, but 3 bottles' shipping to the US costs about $17 per bottle. Their selection of fair prices independent bottlings is sure to turn up something for every palate. I don't know what the import and excise tax would add to the price upon delivery, but it appears to be the best option, especially in the older bottlings ( there are plenty of 20+ year old whiskies around the $100 price range, so figure $120 with shipping, and then if anyone has info on tax expectations for an end user importing scotch whisky that would be helpful to the conversation). Slainte
. . . not sure why they should be more expensive ! they arn't in the U.K.
There are not that many of them, so I figure the price indicates the scarcity or they use that as an excuse to jack up the price.
Is Mount Gay XO is unavailable in your neck of the woods?
Is Mount Gay XO still unavailable...
Hey Ralfy great video as always! Give us a call let’s do a video together! Cheers buddy!
Nice try.
You guys better upgrade from dial up first eh?
. . . meybe someday guys, but I tend to do my own thing in the Bothy-zone !
Hey distilleries
You should include a 25 ml water from the same year as the whisky, think about it
They already do it without you noticing it. They successfully sell more water every time you pick up a 40% abv bottle of your choice.
grbadalamenti Good point! 🤔
Please send me a bottle of the 30 yo Cadenheads cognac. I tried it one time a few years ago and it is fabulous. Have a great day !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ooh yeah i once got a bottle of foursquare, it made me like rum. Are there any ralfy recommended rum reviewers?
. . . check out fatrumpirate.com
* Have * you ever smashed a bottle, Ralfy?
Hopefully not intentionally.
. . . not this week !
I'm bidding on Islay Jazz Festival..
I wonder if it is yours?!?
. . . not yet !
Here too
.
. . . Verified as First !

Which one, Ralfy?!!
Ralphy, here in the USA, I believe it’s illegal to sell spirits on the black market?
Serby He isnt talking about the black market... he sells them at auction (the secondary market). Which is perfectly legal.
James, I don't know about that...
It’s really only illegal if you get caught.....right? Lol!
Amazon is selling whisky in Italy and killing the little spirits shops. How legal is that?
grbadalamenti Big stores in the US are slowly killing off the little liquor stores, but the variety of products available has increased, and the prices are lower in the big stores. The little liquor stores have had a death grip on the market here for decades and are mostly dank, dingy, run down shops anyway with mostly beer and wine for sale and few spirits. I say let the free market forces run their course in this case here. It’s for the better here. In Italy, it’s probably different. I’ve read Amazon’s plan is to take over virtually everything hence their name (The Amazon River is the biggest river on earth and dwarfs all others). Good luck to you.
❤️👍🥃
And what is the molecular weight of each malt ??????????????

Ralfy, love the hell out of you. But as an American, your reviews are becoming a little un-relatable.
Would it help if Ralfy sounded like he’s from Chicago or New Jersey? LOL!
Would help more if a whisky was reviewed that was available in Chicago or New Jersey.
Ralfy, don't you sometimes feel like you are getting sour? I like your videos but there are definitely annoying parts, among which your long rants about the bad people who do not enjoy whisky like you do...
. . . I am a bit, but not too much, after all, whisky is simply not all lovelyness and maltmagic.
That's a great reply. I appreciate your sincerity, and your scottishness (scottitude?). But keep improving. ;)
I definitely grabbed 4 bottles if the lot 40 cask strength and stashed a couple away for years from now.
