Im always blown away by seeing Wyatt’s skill using ‘hiking’ (mountaineering) boots. Just goes to show extreme pedal feel with race shoes is nothing compared to extreme feel of the car itself!
I wear some beat-up New Balance sneakers. Not for the Initial D meme, but their soles are so worn from walking that I can almost feel the pedal directly.
Puma has decent affordable driving shoes. Not full on fireproof racing shoes but they’re thin and have a comfortable heel for driving. Adidas used to have nice ones too but I haven’t seen any in a few years.
Great video as always! I have a video idea for you guys. Have you ever thought about doing some sort of "transferable skills" video on driving simulators for performance driving? It could be a good quarantine special with most of the world staying inside and it'd be interesting to see how a sim compares to real life.
every old pair of skate shoes I own become my new driving shoes, wear down the heels so they are round and the soul basically is non existent so great feel and a lot of fun. I live in the suburbs though and mostly just take the fun car out for drives so never have to worry about shredding them or stepping on a small pebble that will feel like a boulder, boots for everything else though
Vans Slip ons, great feel and easy for heel toe and left foot braking. Comfy too. When I wear flip flops I just take them off driving and go barefoot to do the same driving
Same bro, I’ve tried to drive with flip flops and they often get stuck when pressing the clutch or the gas making the situation rather dangerous. Driving barefoot is really unmatched. Vans are good though, certainly the best shoes for driving I’ve ever experienced.
By the way, did you know you can tell how somebody drives by looking at the difference between the left and the right heel of the shoes? Big wear difference means that person likes to go a bit faster than regular. Learned this at automotive sales college, they taught us to have a look at this. Have fun observing peoples heels folks ;)
In the UK we have a lot of tiny French hatchbacks. I love them, in a 1400lb car even 80bhp is fun. Anyway, they have tiny pedals right close together and with a US size 13 foot I need the slimmest, most uncomfy shoes to drive them properly. Totally worth it though.
I prefer racing shoes with a harder sole in the toe. The flex in the middle allows for great feel and the hard toe avoids sore spots on the ball of my foot on long days of rallying.
Maybe the most strange experience with shoes I have ever had was when I put on fivefingers at the first time and sat into the car. Especially after wearing some heavy hiking-like shoes for a long time.
If you like the barefoot pedal feel without the need for goofy (and expensive) individual toe socks, look into Vivobarefoot. They feel the same, but are shaped like normal shoes.
I really enjoy wearing the Merrel Trail Glove (I have the Trail Glove 4) for driving. They do have a durable sole, but there's zero drop heel to toe, and the sole is 11mm thick. Excellent pedal feel, very comfortable!
I wear the Trail gloves every day for work and they're great! But for my driving focused stuff I prefer the Vapor Gloves, they are almost too thin to wear around anywhere with stones but they provide great pedal feel
Ha, I wear vapor glove knock offs everyday. Too thin, nah your soles are just wimpy. Trust me I’ve been in minimalist shoes for most of my life (currently 24). That said I think I would prefer the trail gloves for driving. A slightly more stiff and hard sole helps me be more precise.
Oh no... I've always wanted a pair of Piloti driving shoes and due to lockdown I've been spending more money than usual. This video might make me buy a pair!!!
Piltoti is great they last for ever. Get them on sale and you won't be disappointed and make sure you match the right size. They got a size chart on their site that tells you how to measure your feat.
I've found the Merrel Accentor Mid GTX, works well for me. Midway between the full on hiking boot and the training shoes in the video. They are fairly lite, waterproof, have an all terrain sole that's got some feel, but not painfull for walking off road and the radius on the heel helps nice smooth pedal travel.
Driving in my Salomons feels great. I have the xa pro’s and the speedcross (which I noticed this guy has as well). The speedcross soles are grippy so it’s a funny feeling under the pedals but I’ve gotten used to it.
I really like soft Bogs (or other muck boots sorts so long as they are flexible), the lack of structure makes for good winter driving shoes even though they are tall boots. In our Montana winters I need the good pedal sensitivity since when driving on ice I'm almost always at the traction limit. And the tall boot is handy for when a ditch happens
@@tricd0444 I found they last me a little longer than a year, but I also haven't ever spent more than like 35 bucks on a pair. If you're smart and don't care what color you're getting you can get them on sale for alright prices.
Low top Nike sb are my favorite. The janoski and low blazer have almost the exact same design as a classic van shoe, but much more durable. I had a pair of janoskis I wore everyday for like 6 years. Still wearable just don't provide the support I want anymore.
I found a pair of Porsche branded Adidas driving shoes in a Freds years back! Lol... they were 20 bucks in the clearance section and looked brand new other than a tiny flaw on one of the toe leather sections. I'm not a guy that would pay over 200 bucks for a shoe like this but for 20 bucks I had to get them. They haven't gotten a lot of use and are designed in a way that makes them terrible for walking but for driving I really like them and other than the slightly tacky woodgrain plastic (though it's the same stuff used in the cars) they look awesome. I have no idea how they ended up in a rural Freds but my wife says they were meant for me to have. 🤣
Dude, I got my pedal stuck between my foot and the flip flop once and couldn't pull my foot free because of the angle and in trying to I ended up braking really hard like 3 times and stalling my car. Never again, lol.
I drive barefoot too. Sometimes with socks if I long drive. My problem is the tact of the pedal always tear holes on my socks even the thick ones haha. I put my footwear on the passenger seat. If I had any footwear already on, boots, shoes even flip flops, I don't take them off tho it takes space and might get stuck under the pedals, I don't like my floor crowded.
I’ve used my used skate shoes for my first 6 track days and the pedal feel is good but thought it could be bettee and started looking into racing shoes. Noticed theyre really similar to wrestling shoes and those feel like barefeet so picked up a set of adidas for 80 bucks. Can’t wait to try them at sonoma raceway in a couple weeks. Not sfi rated of course but i’m just doing track days so not necessary for me yet
I have always liked the puma drift cats but they can be hard to find and somewhat pricey. Lately I have loved the Levis Mens Rio shoe. Super thing soles but still a shoe you can walk around in and they have the rounded heel which I prefer. They are also only $30 which is nice too xD
Is it possible in rally to drive barefoot in socks and have boots ready in case you need to hop out and check the car? That's what I do in performance road driving when you need that extra edge on the feel of the pedals , you can do it with fire retardant socks as well
I always love these videos If anyone wants try out the concept or just get a cheap facsimile of those racing shoes, grab a pair of amazon basics(?) water shoes the basically exactly what he just described and they're $10. Word to the wise though, throw a pair of boots or something in the trunk in case something happens and you have to walk a significant distance.
I found this very informative but since I'm a bit too far to the extreme I really struggle with footwear when driving. I wear a US size 15 6E. Due to the width of my feet, I had to take up driving barefoot when I learned to drive manual. With large work boots on I literally cannot drive manual without stepping on all three pedals simultaneously. Even with skating type shoes, I struggle to not accidentally hit the brake with the clutch unless I really focus on the position of my left foot. For years of my life now, because I am addicted to driving manuals, I have worn flip flops all year round, rain and snow included, even in the bitter cold of winter - and I lived in Utica, New York for two years. I always have to take time to put on real shoes if I need it (work, formal occasions) when I arrive. There is nothing I want more than some footwear which is thin enough to allow me to drive with the first 1/3 of my foot accurately but also encompasses my foot and lasts at least a few months.
bro this comment is it. i’m learning how to drive my focus st and literally the only way i can drive without stalling or anything is barefoot. i’ve tried vans, converse and anything you name it. now i just wear crocs and take them off when i’m driving lol
I like doing this too. But I think practising with shoes on is better because in any actual competition you are going to need to wear shoes. But if you don't ever intend on doing that then yeah, it feels better
I see what you mean now that it's uploaded... the level is about the same as we always use, but these ads are getting louder and louder! We'll bump the volume a little next time to match better, thanks for pointing this out.
Any advice for people with larger/wider feet? I usually wear size 12 shoes, which isn't so bad in and of itself, but I wear anywhere from a 4 extra-wide to a 6 extra-wide, which makes finding shoes suitable for driving pretty tough. And since I'm diabetic, I have to be really careful to wear shoes that fit properly.
Take a look at these, you can probably find a better deal if you shop around but these might be the ones for you: www.hmsmotorsport.com/item/omp-one-s-wide-shoe/racing-shoes
Just realised the shoes I got as my "Daily drivers" are kind of formed like these racing shoes but still are (relatively) light normal ones with a decent sole lol
Yo for real! Subarus have such a small foot box. I like my 5 ten freeriders for driving, thick sole but I can revmatch easier than with something thin soled
I've used skate shoes for driving since the 90's, the feel and flat sole just work.
Converse is the way
@@Bzorlan tigers are
See I fully agreed with this until I stepped onto wet/muddy floors and my feet would just fly straight of the pedals 😂
I used a Nike skate shoes for about 6 years, driving almost everyday or 2 or 3 times a week, it´s funny because the heel was rounded.
I never really knew what to look for in driving shoes, but now I do. I’ll likely be sticking to my Chuck Taylors though lol
Chucks do a lot.
First time i was driving with my Chucks i think, WOW what a paddle feeling. Excellent driving shoe
Haha my favourite shoes too
Try Mexico 66 even more pedals feel.

Nice! Been curious about this subject.
I love using my Converse for driving, i can feel the pedals properly
I've been wearing high top converse for years and they work great. I've had some pumas that work great and some of them have rolled heels.
I love to drive in leather sneakers with flat, flexible, and relatively thin outsoles. Favorite brand is Pantofola D'Oro.

I use water shoes for RallyCross. Good feel, lightweight and breathable for hot California days.
I use a pair of really worn out vans slip-ons. Comfy, very thin so you can really feel pedals and they don't slip around at all
