  • I'm giving you 3 reasons why you should NEVER be using cue cards (papers) in this week's episode of MasterTalk. Follow me on Instagram: @masteryourtalk
    1. The Barrier (1:11).
The biggest criticism I give to these cards is that it creates a barrier between the audience and yourself as the speaker and lessens the connection between you two.
Let’s say you’re telling an amazing personal story during your pitch and you forget 1-2 key messages you wanted to pull out of this story, your 1st instinct will be to look at the cue cards which ruins the story altogether since it loses the emotional touch, but 2nd it also sends you the wrong message, being that you NEED to know EVERY LITTLE PART of your story to execute it well. Never forget that it’s always HOW you say something, not what you say.
So, in that specific example, if you had 3 key messages you say, I guarantee your audience would be more connected to you if you said only 1 of those key messages and moved on, then saying all 3 while looking at the cue cards mainly because it’s distracting, but ALSO because they don’t know what you want to say. It’s like a dance recital… if you fall, just get back up and pretend like nothing happened, how will your audience notice? They don’t even know the routine…
    2. Cue cards teach the WRONG things (2:47).
In this section, I want to explore cue cards through the lens of my 5 basic tips. Using cue cards will increase anxiety meaning that you won’t be able to strategically weave in your silences to enhance your presentations. Imagine saying something amazing and turning to your cue cards, it ruins the entire effect. The same goes for eye contact, remember you should only be looking at your slides or your audience, looking at the cards makes you feel less present with the audience, which brings me to the last point. Your AUDIENCE. Never forget the quality of your presentation lives and dies by how much your audience loves it - and your audience won’t like it when you’re not 100% engaged with them.
    3. There's better tools you can leverage like slides (4:07).
Another important reason to consider with cue cards is that in most situations, there are better tools you can leverage to keep your audience engaged while still having support and the best example of that, is PowerPoints. I know what you’re thinking, Brenden, people are just going to read off of slides. That’s not true, there’s an art to reading PowerPoint slides and I’ll give you a quick tip that a friend taught me. If you go near the slide while looking at your audience and point to something on it, it feels like you’re giving a lesson or saying something important, when in reality, you forgot what you wanted to say and you look at the slide for support, but your audience won’t be able to tell the difference. Here’s the catch though, the audience WILL ALWAYS know when you look at your cue cards, there’s no way to hide, so get rid of them once and for all.
