You missed one. Instead of a metaphor, there is also the talent of telling the exact truth, in a way that not only is immediately misinterpreted, but also makes the listener ask "did he REALLY say that?" or "what does THAT mean?" I was at one of these presentations, and everyone was to stand up and tell what their job was, in one sentence, then sit down. At the end, we had to write down which one we wanted to know more about. Everyone there picked the same guy, who stood up and said "I pass gas for a living." The moderator changed the presentation on the fly, having everyone write down what they thought his job actually was. He was well dressed and well groomed, with a clear voice and intelligent look. We all guessed that he was an anesthesiologist, and were smug that we understood the slang used by medical professionals. And we were all WRONG -- he drove a PROPANE DELIVERY truck. I can't tell you anything specific about what anyone else there did, just him and me. There were some real estate people, a couple of doctors and nurses, a college professor, a motorcycle cop, etc. . . .but were just people doing stuff that people who attend those presentations do. Every time I see a propane truck, or think about "passing gas" in any sense of the phrase, I remember the one guy there who didn't have a business card.

When is "passing gas" to mean "propane delivery" telling the exact truth? I know what you're trying to say, but the exact truth it isn't. It's using a funny figure of speech to make it interesting. He was just playing around with context.

I also would like to say for your consideration to thing of why you seek this audience. If you care about them in what you do they will listen beast. Love is the key to all communication that has understanding. The motive is always clear when it is love. You need to earn trust and respect or they will say Yes and not hear a thing. They will be cautions and even suspicious if they do not understand your motive is love and care for them to teach them something good or bring a good idea to them to consider.

I'm sorry you did not see the point to that step in my process of captivating people's attention in less than 30 seconds. If you thought I was wasting time, so be it. You are entitled to think whatever you want. In my 15 years of using this technique on thousands of people, I have had only a handful of people react as you did. Therefore, while it might have wasted your time (1 minute) it usually clears the mind of my audience and they always smile when I tell them, "Now, you should have nothing on your mind! We can go full steam ahead with my talk." Take care. Stay safe. Test negative. Be positive. Question: Did you learn a thing or two about how you can captivate your audiences after the list making? I hope so.
