I Loved ❤️ my courageous important D.A.D "RIP". A great man despite him calling me stupid and who bravely fought in the Korean war and could go into a bar with a buck and come out drunk. A man with a great walk. He still makes me smile. Believe it or not he won the lottery for real. An orphan left by his mother with a positivity despite the odds. I totally agree about Dostoevesky. I read "The Brothers Karamazov" for a college class-- "Sacred Symbols and Patterns of Thought Through Time". That was something like 30 years ago, and I still think about it. Especially the chapter called "The Grand Inquisitor." So much yearning to know truth, so much confusion, complications, false ideas mixed up with true ones.

Kinda helps with the whole memory recall thing. I can remember in my middle school years having a friend from PR named Freedom. Wasn’t his real name and he barely spoke a lick of English. We nicknamed him Frito as a result because of how he annunciated his name in his broken English dialect and accent. However, his favorite snack was chocolate peanuts. For some reason I had a sense of awe and surrealism how he was so enthralled with the excess and accessibility to his favorite treat. Which, made me aware for a moment that he probably didn’t have it as good as I did before we met.

I love writing. It makes my ideas real. I sit in front of my computer. dial up Google Docs and all of a sudden I'm understanding myself better 29 pages in writing a long, long letter to someone I'll probably never meet. Writing is a conversation--with myself, sure, but with someone of whom I have a model in my head. Everything I've ever written, including papers and articles and two screenplays, were addressed to an imaginary reader. It's communication.

I've been a long-time follower of Dr. Peterson, but what really struck me about this video is Dr. Peterson's advocacy for the humanities. I am a student of History, and I have felt over the past several years this sense that my study, along with the rest of the sister disciplines in the humanities, have been denigrated constantly, accused of being an area of knowledge that no longer provides any sort of economic or moral value. The prevailing rhetoric now is that young people either have to get a STEM degree, or go into Trade School; there is nothing else in between that is a worthwhile effort. It seems as if there has been a moral darkening over the population, a growing fixation with what is practical and not with what is good. Yet we've seen with the handling of the pandemic that there is a need for a humanitarian education, because we are increasingly faced with the crises of unethical science and governmental policies. I hope that soon, Dr. Peterson will not have to dissuade people from studying the humanities, and that our western civilization once again rediscovers the importance of the humanities. After all, the study of the humanities was one of the only things that pulled Europe out of the Dark Ages and into the Renaissance and Age of Reason.

I am actually pretty good with words, and pretty well-read, and I was accustomed to getting high marks on everything in all my classes and here I was with a C in front of me? Well, my writing was not concise, it didn't get to the point, it had unnecessary words. It was a linguistics course, not a writing course, but Wick Miller taught me how to write. THESE are the people we NEED in education, at every level. I studied a crap degree - as in it was great if you wanted to be a chartered accountant. But I did something called The International Management Programme...so I had an AMAZING professor lecturing on the papers in my 4th year, to do with international management. And that experience, was the first time I ever had my mind and horizons in an intellectual sense, truly broadened.

About halfway through a man mentions a smoking addiction and how he realised he used it as an excuse to not do certain things. That was definitely a big part of it for me.
It's sad but especially after I had my child and was done breastfeeding I started again because I was around it and that made it easier to pick it back up..but many family members were only willing to watch my child when I was smoking.
So I kept smoking because "why not" (and I was depressed and stressed). Until I started to realise I didn't want a smokers cough and I didn't want to spend the money...then I realized I could just say I'm smoking but choose to breathe and take a moment instead. One family member did thankfully understand and was kind to knowingly watch my child for a bit while I just had a break (without smoking).
Back to being honest..I discovered who I wanted around me and my child anyway vs who I didn't. The people that were refusing to watch my kid if I wasn't smoking...all of them ended up being people that I now cut out of my life for many reasons. Just being honest about that one thing was a big hint.

"Part of being a good person is to alleviate suffering." (16:52)
    That explains so much.
It explains the polarization we see today; when we reach a conclusion about how to reduce suffering, we tend to think that others who don't see it that way are working against us.
It explains the temptation we all have to dehumanize those who disagree with our own perspective on what causes suffering and how to reduce it.
It explains why Dr. Peterson has often expressed frustration at people teaching a false morality; chasing after that phantom good only increases suffering, rather than decreasing it, while simultaneously helping its proponents *feel* virtuous and moral.
To know how to truly reduce suffering long term, you need to know the foundational truths of existence.

Why good writing will always triumph over intersectionality: A decent story will almost always involve multiple characters, and for them to be good characters they have to be written as individuals with their own dreams, motivations, and limitations. This is quite anti-thetical to what progressives in general want: That everyone think exactly the same, have the same morals and desires. If you can swap the names of any number of characters and the story remains the same, odds are you've failed to write anything interesting; and that none of the characters written actually grows past a stereotype.
If you think about it, a lot of stories and movies in the past do have 'woke' themes to them, but none of it mattered because the characters that exist are fully fleshed out; they are individuals. More modern media where the wokeness takes center stage, the characters aren't fleshed out: They become the ideology, a hollow shell that spits out talking points and is never challenged or put to the test; but rather everything they encounter simply re-affirms their position. Their dreams aren't challenged, their resolve isn't challenged, there is no self-reflection or even a hint of possibility that they could be wrong; having a personal internal obstacle is one of the most critical things for a character to develop, but woke characters are given speedbumps to run over: Not life altering dilemmas.

    • @fox_in_michigan8716
      @fox_in_michigan8716 2 года назад +4

yep. the first thing that comes to mind is santa inc (the shit series from sarah silverman and seth rogan) and it is a prime example of wokeness destroying good storytelling and character introspection/development for the sake of pushing their message. santa (the white male character) explains to the main female character she isnt cut out to be the next santa because she is evidently bad with children. he explains this is in a completely reasonable and compassionate speech, and even offers her a job to work behind the scenes (which of course she scoffs at and brings up the "men getting credit for what women do" BS instead of just being thankful) but at the end of it, the main female character just tells him to fuck off - the character that we're supposed to root for. he of course turns out to be evil, as the writers figured that they needed a proper justification for the protag to be ungrateful, but its such a fucking mess and doesnt work at all, because she of course has to be depicted as the 'right' one. the female protagonist is complete selfish, self-centred and awful to people, but its ok because shes a woman and spouts feminist talking points. its honestly a concerning trend that ive seen in woke media, how selfish, arrogant, and self-important the characters are and how selfish their actions are, and its constantly downplayed or straight up ignored by the writers who have similiar worldviews. wandavision is another example of characters being selfish as fuck and getting away with because "her fee fees were hurt )):"

@@righteousshift482 I heard a good argument before that Dune had an effectively conservative world view at it's core, despite the fact it obviously depicted hallucinogenic drug use from first hand experience in the 60s. I don't remember the details of the argument but it seemed compelling at the time. I think was from The Distributist, who is Catholic, so that's a particular bias. I disagree with many of his thoughts, but I do seem to recall his arguments about Dune, assuming it was him, seemed fairly convincing.
I think it's important to notice that conservative and liberal are not directly antonyms. These days conservatives seem to be liberals in that they are trying to conserve liberal values, and "progressives" are often trying to regress us to nonsense that previous progressives freed us from. Many folks labeled "conservatives" fight for freedoms and and many "liberals" are trying to enforce a new ridged authoritarian religion.
There's many ways folks can break down what's different in the factions and mind sets. One is if humans are basically good and corrupted by culture, or if they are basically bad and need to be civilized (while admitting that culture can also become corrupt).
The fact that one can question boundaries and ideas doesn't mean there aren't any they may wish to conserve. While I don't expect many lawyers to write compelling fantasy, and on big 5 personality they are low in openness but high in conscientiousness which correlatedo with conservative (even if they are fighting dirty for gun control or abortion), doesn't mean that the folks who push the boundaries of ideas are not conservative in many many ways. Everything is by degrees.
For an example Christopher Hitchens pointed to a passage from the novel "A Man For All Seasons" in his speech about Free Speech. In it sir Thomas Moore is arguing with a vicious witch hunter, and he asks him: "You would break the law to punish the devil, wouldn't you?" And the guy replies: "Break it? I'd cut down every law in England if I could capture him." And Moore replies: "Yes you would wouldn't you. But when you finally corner the devil and the devil turns around to meet you, where would you flee for protection? All the laws of England having been cut down?"
Note that that's basically a conservative argument. In a famous play. Being used as a good example by a "liberal."
In practice it seems to me there's just an establishment tyranny that requires artists to fall I line with their agenda to be promoted and not suppressed. Apparently war and racism and sexual abuse and so on are all perfectly fine so long as it's "left" wing parties and peoples that do it.

your comment made me emotional for some reason. its so spot on. most likeable characters are actually never politically correct. this might seem like a weird tangent but: im kinda sad they didnt renew 'happy' for another season. i mean it's about an alcoholic daddy with ptsd who has an imaginary friend and a daughter he's trying to save from a pedophile ring. he also slays a lot of baddies which would technically mean he's a serial killer. but he's real, his emotions are real and his heart is in the right place. most modern shows dont seem to produce any truly likeable or memorable characters. feels more like they are pushing some kind of agenda to make people feel morally superior (or inferior). i dunno i am probably getting carried away here. much love anyway.

This should become English study standards in schools. It's interesting and most informative. Would have been handy back in the day.

I agree 100% it truley is uncanny.... and has happened over and over. In so many ways, and about so many different topics. It also makes me realize I am not strange, or alone...other people think like I do or have experienced these things. I am not abnormal.

Some of the best advice I've received I wont go into here but for young folks and their concentration there's a critical element that society no longer pushes. Reading not a computer screen but printed words on paper. It exercises the brain. I was given this pearl by someone who archived two masters degrees.

I very recently had noticed that although i am a good writer, i have a real problem with generating a non fiction story of an event i created for a video. This is exactly what i needed to hear and see.
