AP3 everytime. I'm a high handicap golfer. I got fitted for a set of these, my old set was a set of ping g max. The AP3 will be in my bag for a long time I love em. Keep up the good work Rick 👍
The good thing about a golf bag is that if I want longer distance, I can always club up. AP3 are fantastic looking clubs, but I am still buying p790 in the future. great video series Rick!
Cool video, like the format just not these two clubs in a head to head. these two clubs aren't aimed at the same audience. Better comparison would be epic vs ap1, or epic pro vs ap3.
@@mattiasolsson70 Got mine from a local club pro for $800 4-PW plus a 48*. He used them 4 rounds and decided he wanted to use his MB's. I thoroughly enjoy them!!
Hi Rick, I know this is a little off topic, but please please please do a ‘battle of the blades’......mp18 vs Callaway MB vs 730 vs 718mb. We blade lovers have been spoiled with the blade offerings from the companies this year and I’m sure many of your viewers would love to see you put them up against each other. Love all the videos and content, many thanks Duffy Moon.
Loving the head to heads Rick. 👍🏻 Even w/o considering the price tag, the AP3 wins all day in every category for me. So when you factor in the mega price, there’s no contest. I have zero idea how Callaway thought these Epic irons would do well - especially the standard versions. The pros look OK but the standards basically look like those monstrous big Bertha irons but in neon green...doesn’t exactly scream class or premium quality materials. If Callaway wanted to make a play for the super elite end of the market, they should’ve just made just ONE set of premium/classy, tech-packed, hollow-head, FORGED irons (eg P790s) and put it under the Apex brand which people already associate w/ the top end of the Callaway range. Buzzwords like “Epic” and neon green coloring don’t really appeal to the crowd that can afford to drop the serious coinage for these irons.
Hi Rick. Watching from the future - it’s 2019 where I am. If you fancy a bet, Francesco Molinari won the open at Carnoustie and Shane Lowery lifted the claret jug the following year. Tiger won another major at the masters. Oh and Europe also won the Ryder Cup 🤣
Great test, I really like the new format. As for a game improvement/forgiving irons, I'm obviously looking for forgiveness on off-centre strikes. I have trouble shot shaping left and right with my current game improvement irons but I can hit them high or low on command. I find that has more to do with setup then with the clubs themselves. Nevertheless great comparison!
I think you should compare difference too. It doesn’t matter if it’s straight if it is 15-20 yards longer then average. Otherwise you are the nr 1 RUclips golfer!
I don't understand why people discuss the "workability" of a club, especially when it comes to blades vs. improvement irons. I honestly feel that you can tilt the spin axis just as much with a game improvement iron and get it to fade/draw etc. At least from my experience. And since game improvement irons tend to go higher, and you still have the ability to keep the ball down when you want to, don't they technically have more workability? You have more options. Just a thought.
I'd like to think a 2 handicap would be good enough to shape the ball with any club. I'm a 6 handicap, and I like to think I'm a decent ball striker. I have used both blades and cavities for multiple years and I noticed no difference in ability to shape the ball. And as I said, you have more "workability" to hit shots high and low. I just feel that when people choose to buy a club just because they think it's easier to shape, that they're missing the point
I have been looking at new iron's and your reviews are quite helpful... Im trying to find the sweet spot between huge clunky clubs and muscle backs. These just might be the ones for me to go try
Hey Rick great head to Head. I would LOVE to see a Head to Head if the PXG 0311 Wedges and the PXG 0311T Wedges to really get a glimpse of the difference
Hi Rick, good video. Is there any chance of you doing a set like you did with drivers, Old Vs New but with irons. A lot of players will be like me, having had their irons for a few years and wondering if we will see any benefit from the current latest and greatest. I play six year old Ping G20's and would love to see a comparison with the G400
Thanks to Titleist AP3 I have fallen in love with the game of golf again! I’m in my mid 40’s and I don’t see myself as a better player. I broke 90 last year but will probably not break 80. My swing speed is moderate and I hit the 7 iron around 130m/140y. I chose True Temper AMT Red Regular shaft because I like it’s lightness and high ball flight. Used to play TaylorMade’s game improvement irons like RSi 1 and Burner 2.0 but I learned to hate the strong lofts, heavy weights and clumpiness of a game improvement iron. With AP3 I can even launch the 4 iron from the turf without any difficulties. With TaylorMade I couldn’t even get decent shots with my 5 iron...
I think you are referring to a lie board. It is used to determine the correct lie angle you should be playing. i.e.. perhaps 1-2 degrees flat if you have a flatter swing, standard for neutral swing plane, or upright lie angle for steeper swings
Hi Rick. I am in the marked for new irons. I am a 5,5 hcp. but closing in on 50 years old so this time I would like a little help in my new irons. I have tried severel new irons and I am left to decide between Taylormades P-790 and Titleist AP3. Could you maybe do a video P-790 vs AP3. I would really appreciate it.
Rick is saying that although there is a 1 degree advantage to the callaway, the distance it gained over the titleist was more than that 1 degree should account for
Although he only tested one club from each set, this test is meant to provide a comparison between sets. So if you were to buy the Epic set, you would expect to get a bit more distance with them throughout the set than the AP3, but less workability. Carry is usually the same for clubs of the same loft no matter what branding is on the shaft. There are other effects such as flight shape and spin which can influence the buying decision. Carry is not the sole criterion.
Akim Bizati I disagree. 1 degree is nothing in a test like this. The launch angle of both irons confirm that. Rick knows what he’s doing. Trust his results!
Like the new format for testing clubs head to head. One thing you didn't mention Rick is price point. Are the epics around £500 more than the ap3 for a full set. That's a big influence when people make a choice. What's thoughts Rick. Keep up the good work, thanks Andy 👍
I've hit both and the AP3 looks and feels 10x better. That said, I think these appeal to different skills levels. I see the AP3 as a club for the 7ish - 15ish handicapper. I see the epic as a more mid to high handicapper's club. I play off a 10 and the AP3 is perfect for me. Plenty of length and forgiveness but when I want to try and shape it a bit I can.
Are the shafts the same spec? Epic comes with LZ 95, (don’t exists in the Project X LZ range) AP3 with AWT Shafts as std. Different shaft, different weight, different flexibility!!
Exactly, I think value to performance should play in as well. Is the Epic 800 to 900$ better than the AP3? No way! The AP3 is a much better looking club as well, honestly one of the best looking irons I've ever seen. Hands down AP3 for me, but they're both out of my price range sadly.
Well let see the outcome was so easy to predict, 1 the callaway one degree stronger always going to go further 2 the callaway has a bigger head with more offset and a bigger top line so forgiveness was always one sided and vice versa with the titliest in shot shaping that was always one sided. The ap2 would of been better to compare since the ap3 sits in between the ap1 and ap2
I’m usually a team callaway person but those irons look too chunky and I don’t like the green. I’d much prefer a more workable iron. Hands down I’d take the AP3
Rick or someone who knows about clubs could you pls help me I am a five handicapper that generally hits pure and nice irons and i would like to a new set of irons i normally average 180 yards with the 7 iron
Actually, it isn't. One category deals with how forgiving it is on a poor strike (or how much you're punished), the other category is the capability of the club allowing you to maneuver/control your shot shape on command.
Hey Rick, another great video! You have the best equipment reviews by far. Always look forward to the next one. Looking forward to the new Taylormade M4 review. Maybe one to add to your bag for #questfortheopen 2018! Happy Holidays!
Sorry I don't think the looks are as important as the performance.i also feel that if you wanted to compare like with like use the Epic Pro as it has the lesser offset and is more workable. Might be a different story then .. Cost wise .. Titleist all day long , how Callaway price these is a mystery .
what the hell.... please...please say, that the people on this irons need a second gap-wedge!!!!... they mean, they play a 7 iron!?...forget it...it's a 6er. true loft is true golf!
The Epic are just not an impressive iron at all. Expensive, ugly, and don't have the performance to back up the name in any way. The AP3 feel awful so I can only imagine how poor the Epic feel.
AP3 everytime. I'm a high handicap golfer. I got fitted for a set of these, my old set was a set of ping g max. The AP3 will be in my bag for a long time I love em. Keep up the good work Rick 👍
Rick this is one of my favorite videos you’ve ever made. You should definitely do more of these... maybe a P790 Vs T-MB or X-Forged Vs CB
A set of ap3 are going in my bag this spring. Felt so good when I hit them.
The AP3 is the sexiest club I’ve ever seen. Can’t wait to get these.
Loving the Battle of the Irons Rick. Keep them coming.
I liked the TITLEIST so much I bought them!
I think the epic pro would be more similar comparison, IMO.
The good thing about a golf bag is that if I want longer distance, I can always club up. AP3 are fantastic looking clubs, but I am still buying p790 in the future. great video series Rick!
UTILITY IRON BATTLE!!! WE NEED TO SEE IT RICK!
PLEASE!!!! Cobra Utility, Titleist 718 Utility, Callaway Apex, Srixon U65, etc
Cool video, like the format just not these two clubs in a head to head. these two clubs aren't aimed at the same audience. Better comparison would be epic vs ap1, or epic pro vs ap3.
Thanks for the test! I really like this head to head over others I have seen. Just the facts.
Would appreciate if you could give details about your testing/simulator setup. What components are involved to track results of your test shots?
Yes! Go Titleist!
Just bought a set of AP3s and they feels amazing.
Mattias Olsson how much did you pay. Got some from my boy but worried on the price.
John Cash I paid £900 ($1200) and they were fitted to me.
I tried a couple of sets before I made up my mind and to me these were the right choice.
They are really beautiful irons.
@@mattiasolsson70 Got mine from a local club pro for $800 4-PW plus a 48*. He used them 4 rounds and decided he wanted to use his MB's. I thoroughly enjoy them!!
I just bought the ap3's also. They are awesome. Tried the ap2s. Wasnt good enough. Lol
I would like to know the dispersion stats for the five standard shots as a mark of consistency in launch.
Titleist. Nice to be able to get a forgiving iron that you can shape shots as you improve without having to change irons
Good job! Go AP3!
I just picked up a set of the AP3. I liked their performance in the golf store, I hope they perform as well on the course.

Love these comparisons especially cause I'm thinking of getting a new set as my swing improves
Do ping g400 vs ap1
Just think the Titleist clubs look stunning. That swings it for me regardless of performance.
Love the new tests
Can u do a head to head of mizuno mp18 vs. Taylormade p730 please?
Thanks Rick, keep up the good work!
Dale Longmuir just what I was thinking Dale.
hey rick what's your opinion of the areotech steel fiber iron shafts vs just steel?
Ps. Love the new rest format. Only thing missing is the gapping in my humble opinion...
Hi Rick. Watching from the future - it’s 2019 where I am. If you fancy a bet, Francesco Molinari won the open at Carnoustie and Shane Lowery lifted the claret jug the following year. Tiger won another major at the masters. Oh and Europe also won the Ryder Cup 🤣

Love my ap3’s need a 4iron tho...Rick if you got a lefty laying around would be most appreciated

What happened to the Cobra one length Hybrids you said you were going to review?
I have been looking at new iron's and your reviews are quite helpful... Im trying to find the sweet spot between huge clunky clubs and muscle backs. These just might be the ones for me to go try
Those AP3's are the sexiest golf club ever.
Lance Maclean you’re absolutely right
can you compare the ap2 and the epic pro?!
You sure smacked both clubs pretty darn good Rick..... I’m shooting for either AP3 or the new CF19 apex...
Hey Rick. You need get your hand on the Mizuno st180 driver it’s a beauty.
Hey Rick great head to Head. I would LOVE to see a Head to Head if the PXG 0311 Wedges and the PXG 0311T Wedges to really get a glimpse of the difference

AP3 are the next set going in my bag as a reward once my hcp drops a few shots.
Why not compare it to the epic pro? I just ordered the ap3 and currently playing the callaway apex pro.
Thanks to Titleist AP3 I have fallen in love with the game of golf again!

ok this might sound like a dumb question but what are the plastic things you put the ball on (not the tee) its used by custom fitters
I think you are referring to a lie board. It is used to determine the correct lie angle you should be playing. i.e.. perhaps 1-2 degrees flat if you have a flatter swing, standard for neutral swing plane, or upright lie angle for steeper swings
ok thank you so much
Titleist for me Rick it looks awesome 🤓👢
definately titlelist
I’m upgrading from dc1 (yes from the 90’s) to AP3. I love the rifle shaft I have in my dc1’s. Do AP3 have the same or similar shafts?
Yup should compare with epic pro

How can You compare Carry if the loft is not the same ?
launch angles were the same, just ball speed was higher

King Brian of knocknasheega .....Wow! Excuse me for not agreeing with your assessment. We should all respect thee because of your Kingly status. 🙄
Do a ap3 vs the P790
great vid rick and when is the cobra f8 hybrid comping out
The gaps between the clubs is the most important factor in an iron set
Like the new format for testing clubs head to head. One thing you didn't mention Rick is price point. Are the epics around £500 more than the ap3 for a full set. That's a big influence when people make a choice. What's thoughts Rick. Keep up the good work, thanks Andy 👍
Are both irons the same length?
If I had extra money I'd pick the AP3....Best looking iron I've ever seen.
Workability is important. You need to control the ball for placement.
You can’t just hit straight all the time
I've hit both and the AP3 looks and feels 10x better. That said, I think these appeal to different skills levels. I see the AP3 as a club for the 7ish - 15ish handicapper. Can you do the m1s
like titleist 🖒🖒🖒🖒🖒🖒🖒🖒🖒👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 awsome
Ap3 looks so nice I even contemplated leaving my mizuno blades lol
price points ?
i bought the titleist ap 1
Could you do Titleist ap2 vs Taylormade 770
You should play the players club watergarden par 3 course
Can I have your irons that you don't use please Rick would make my day
Titleist all the way!! On price alone the epic should start at -3 points 👎🏻👎🏻
Exactly, I think value to performance should play in as well. Is the Epic 800 to 900$ better than the AP3? No way! The AP3 is a much better looking club as well, honestly one of the best looking irons I've ever seen. Hands down AP3 for me, but they're both out of my price range sadly.

AP3 irons for sure
I’m usually a team callaway person but those irons look too chunky and I don’t like the green. I’d much prefer a more workable iron. Hands down I’d take the AP3
You should lay a rubber mat just in front of the screen so the ball bounce off the floor isn't heard
Hi rick how about taylormade p790 v PXG 311?’
hiiiii
i a the first to comment yay i love your vids
Rick or someone who knows about clubs could you pls help me
I am a five handicapper that generally hits pure and nice irons and i would like to a new set of irons i normally average 180 yards with the 7 iron
What should i go with?
Akim Bizati thanks I had previously thought of the 750s but still I will get fitted
*I have issues EVERYTHING feels clicky if it's not a blade WHY?*
sa aurait été plus marrant si dernier la toile c'était du béton x)
Titleist is much prettier but Epic for distance
PING i200 vs TaylorMade M1
Titlelist
One more of a players club, the other more GI. Right?
Is that not logical? One wins the forgiveniss the other workability ?.
Actually, it isn't. One category deals with how forgiving it is on a poor strike (or how much you're punished), the other category is the capability of the club allowing you to maneuver/control your shot shape on command.
the Callaway looks a bit choonky 😂

Only £580 difference in purchase price
IMO the Epic Irons are wrong placed in the market.
way to expensive for high hcp clubs.
what the hell....
please...please say, that the people on this irons need a second gap-wedge!!!!... they mean, they play a 7 iron!?...forget it...it's a 6er.
true loft is true golf!
That’s really interesting that the 1000 of pounds club loses
Epic. It’s a battle of forgiveness irons not blades
Its a no brainer, 7-0 to Titleist if u ask me.
Rick, I don’t rly like u rn, epic everyday for me
Other than the new 19 apex line, callaway doesn’t make good looking irons. They all have a thick top line that doesn’t suit my eye
i have to go for callaway for the forgiveness as a high handy capper my head would rule over my heart on this one tbh
The Epic are just not an impressive iron at all. Expensive, ugly, and don't have the performance to back up the name in any way.
The AP3 feel awful so I can only imagine how poor the Epic feel.
