You forgot Tenet!!! That movie is all IMAX 😍
It’s disappointing honestly when we cannot get IMAX ratios on home discs… and only having like 2-3 week windows to see these films in IMAX at the theaters…
And the chairs are still outdated, claustrophobic and horrible
@@Gaminating The Regal theater in my area (Fresno, CA) has great seating for their IMAX theater. Seats are comfy and everyone has plenty of leg room and arm rests.
@@josephagundez5336 just depends on the theater and area.
how about literally having no imax screen in my country 😢
Honestly this hits so true for me. I was out of country during the Dune 2 IMAX release window so outside of the story my actual experience watching it was extremely subpar in a standard screening. Hits harder too because, after having seen the first part in full IMAX, I knew exactly what I was missing and left disappointed.
What's more, I don't see the opportunity to even experience a piece of the IMAX experience now that it's out of screenings and IMAX blu rays weren't available for Dune 1 and won't be for Dune 2.
I’m in the industry. If Denis wanted IMAX, he’d get it for the disc release. He’s not invested at all in specifying this. Nolan has specifically requested this for each of his disc releases with IMAX.
What do you do? Out of interest.
Nolan’s releases have imax? That’s cool
@@cenunixNot all do. Inception doesn't have the iMax scenes but the rest from Dark Knight on do.
Denis never speaks about home video. He doesn’t seem to care much and solely focuses on theater releases. Sad. His buddy Noland should chat with him maybe…
Denis recently said it would be in the IMAX ratio, but it seems he just assumed that and didn't realize he had to request it. Case in point, he seems oblivious to the fact that the first one didn't have the IMAX either.
Disney’s 4K release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 used the IMAX footage and that released late last summer. Shocked.
On the 4k Blu-ray ?
@@ANDRE1mang Yes on the disc
It's a common misconception that GOTG 3 was released on "IMAX" on 4k but that's not true. What james gunn did is shot the whole movie with Imax(1.90:1) and shoot some integral scenes in 1.85:1(Little bit taller than imax) so on imax theatres or on disney plus whole movie is in imax aspect ration (1.90:1) and on 4k BD some scenes are in 1.85:1. Since imax's exclusive aspect ratio is only 1.90:1 so they can only prohibit studios from putting that aspect ratio on 4k without paying lisencing fee. But some filmmakers found a loophole by shooting the film with imax certified cameras but making the aspect ratio a little bit taller and then the slightly croped version gets released as an imax presentation and comes on physical media with full aslect ratio without paying the fee. Sadly james gunn only did some shots and not the whole movie that's why some scenes were cinemascope. But you can check on disney plus the whole movie is in imax. But some directors
Have used this trick for the entire movie like Jurassic World 1 and 3 and also avatar 2.All this movies were shot with imax cameras but by slightly tweaking with aspect ratio they release the uncropped version on 4k. I wonder why not all the directors do that.
Yes that release was perfect.
Except the best scene(hallway fight) wasn’t expanded while the Disney+ was. Shame
The hour of IMAX in The Hunger Games Catching Fire takes my breath away, Jennifer Lawrence going up inside the elevator straight to the arena while the screen gets wider and wider, unforgettable images we get thanks to physical media. Great video Jeff !!!
It's mind boggling that they only include the IMAX ratio in the 1080p blu ray. Would look incredible in 4K.
@@LoganScottY Exactly!
Wow it’s not even on the 4K release?? That is unbelievable 😫
@@LoganScottY I have the regular bluray. No IMAX ratio
Whether it’s true iMax or not, those scenes still look incredible on my 65 inch OLED. When the aspect ratio switches in Nolan movies it’s so immersive. It’s a shame it’s a limited feature.
He do you see anything on a screen that tiny?
@@ImSteveMeisterOLED provides better image quality than any theatre I've been to. IMAX is likely to rival a QD-OLED or high brightness WOLED.
@@ImSteveMeisterwhat
The issue I think many people have is that Denis Villeneuve said that he DID want Imax on the 4K release for Dune 2, and that he was expecting it to be on the disc release...and then it wasn't
He said that about Part One, and all he said was that he thought it was coming. For Part 2 I’ve actually seen him quoted as saying IMAX was for the theaters and this version on disc was for home viewing.
The interview I saw of him, he didn't sound very certain despite him saying that they were putting the IMAX ratio on disc. He just doesn't seem to be invested in the decision to the degree that Nolan is
To date, since The Dark Knight, Christopher Nolan discs have had the IMAX ratio on them, except Inception which wasn’t filmed in IMAX. He ensures it’s on there.
I guess not everyone has the power he has though.
@@JeffRauseo But 1.90 isn't IMAX. There's no reason the disc version is 2.4 instead of 1.90.
@@hitchcockisthegoat I don't think it's just a matter of power I think its persistence in the case of Nolan. He insists on it so it happens.
The closer to 16:9 a release is, the better. I only watch movies on my OLED TV, and prefer movies to fill the whole screen. Unfortunately that seems less common these days, even with TV series.
Films are made first and foremost for the cinema environment, where a wider aspect ratio fills the whole room.
It’s not just Dune 2, even Godzilla X Kong won’t have its IMAX scenes in Blu ray which is a shame because I really hope this doesn’t mean those IMAX scenes are in danger of becoming lost media.
On another note I do hope that the upcoming rumor Blu ray of Tron Legacy will have its IMAX scenes from the standard Blu ray.
Everything you just said.
I checked Top Gun Maverick and my Nolan discs, none of them have IMAX branding. It doesn’t make sense that they would have to pay licensing with no branding. Most likely WB just didn’t want to put forth the extra effort or plans to double dip with a 1.90 release later.
Facts
This is correct. The studios do not pay a cent to IMAX to present the film with floating aspect ratios. It’s only Disney that uses this as a marketing gimmick. You are also correct that this is a mastering expense, which is all done digitally. We just pull the 2.40 AR shots and replace them with 1.90.
Warner has zero interest in double dipping with this. This will only happen if Denis gets personally involved and requests this from the studio. Studios will bend over backwards to make their talent happy.

For those few of us with home theaters using projectors and "scope" screens with approx. 2.4:1 aspect ratios, the widescreen format works better than having the aspect ratio change from scene to scene, as in the some IMAX discs. So here is one vote in favor in the wide screen format used for Dune Part 2.
8:20 - The thing is though that very few films shoot 65mm 15-perf like Nolan. Most shoot full DCP size, which is 1.90:1, a ratio that’s technically wider than 16:9 but is letterboxed on a 16:9 screen. So you’re still seeing the full image.
I keep trying to explain this to people when I see them complain about this issue, particularly in regards to Dune on 4k. People seem to think that because they saw it on an IMAX screen that the movie must have been shot in IMAX. They don't seem to understand that theaters can show any movie they want on an IMAX screen, and they will if they think people will pay premium prices for it. That doesn't mean it was shot in IMAX.
This is not relevant to this particular topic, when people say IMAX, they are saying they want the 1.90:1 ratio which most movies in IMAX screens and fits a 16x9 screen, most know true IMAX is actually closer to 1.33:1 ratio like ZSJL
@@Windupchronic except Dune 2 WAS shot with IMAX cameras.
@@handoffbarry No, it wasn’t. It was shot with Alexa. Alexa would be considered IMAX-friendly, but it is not IMAX.
@@Windupchronic Fair, and you are correct. My apologies as I meant they were filmed in the full IMAX ratio (as far as I know). They aren't like the new PotA flick that has a standard scope the whole way through.
Aquaman 2 got IMAX footage for home release. Which only confuses me more because if THAT got IMAX footage, why not Dune 1 and 2?
Unpopular opinion: the best option would be to reframe at 16x9 since the vast majority of home screens are that size. You get more info than the 1:2.35 but without the side bars you'd get if you went full IMAX ratio
What's even better than the additional aspect ratio of the picture is the picture quality itself which are by far the most beautiful scenes you'll ever see in 4K at home.
This reasoning only brings up more questions with the case of Dune Part 2. It wasn't even shot on IMAX film cameras, only the Arri Alexa 65 and LF, so why would the expanded image be absent? And it isn't directors intent either because in an interview when asked about the physical release, Villeneuve sounded confident that the expanded image was going on the disc.
Edit: So it looks like this goes deeper than I initially thought. None of the Marvel movies given the "IMAX" branding on Disney+ were actually shot on IMAX film, so I guess the IMAX title is some kind of hostile patent on the 1.90:1 aspect ratio as well?
I thought Infinity war was shot on imax
@@Notsoosway It was shot on Arri 65 Digital Cameras, which are IMAX Certified but not the same as IMAX film cameras
Makes a lot of sense. I do like the shifting aspect ratio as it can add extra gravitas to a scene. However if including makes putting out a physical version none viable, then I’m happy to sacrifice it, so I can have a disc.
Angry Birds 2 has IMAX on its release? Hilariously random
It’s just branded as “IMAX Enhanced”, but I don’t think it has an expanded ratio.
@@trevorriches136yeah IMAX enhanced was an audio thing a few 4Ks did (I remember Bad Boys 3 being one). AB2 is all 1.85 anyways
Denis and DP Greg Frasier have talked about this. When you see an IMAX movie, the screen is so large that they focus the majority of the action on the 'proscenium' (the center of the screen) because that is all your eyes can take in. The remainder of the screen is "peripheral atmosphere". When viewing at home- the entire screen Is the proscenium. And now, the composition and framing are all wrong. There is too much headroom in the composition- because you were never meant to take in the entire screen as the Proscenium. The framing becomes very apparently "off".
I remember old Disney pixar films had an option to change aspect ratio but on 4k discs they choose not to even though the film was shot in imax
Does imax own the aspect ratio? How hard is it to film at that aspect ratio using non imax cameras?
Great freakin point!
Most people Don't like that aspect ratio and so it would ruin the full screen experience for most buyers
@luminouseasportsfc most movies are wide screen with an aspect ratio closer to 21:9 making black bars appear on the top and bottom. They could remedy that by making the aspect ratio 16:9 to fill out most people's displays.
@@AX5Terminator good point, I never thought of that 🤔
Always wonder why this is.
Thank you Jeff.
The first movie besides Nolan’s work that has that imax switching aspect ration is tron legacy. I hope the 4K retains that’s since the Blu Ray had it.
I'm happy with the original Blu-ray since the DI was 2K like a lot of older effects-heavy movies. The 4K disc will give HDR but the movie has always looked/sounded great anyway.
I’m excited for it since the director has of that movie said that they were working on an atmos track so that should sound amazing!
I get the feeling they'll be saving those versions for their streaming services like Disney+ do for some of the marvel movies.
curious if you’re right, have to see if the MAX release has this.
A lot of the Disney + library has been using remasters, with IMAX enhanced. Majority being the MCU library.
🤔 Exclusivity is definitely part of the deal.
But still bummed about the physical releases having limited IMAX scenes. Sadly that is the way of things
@@drewzalo I don't think they have them on there now but I wouldn't be surprised if down the line they pull a Disney+ to get more subscribers
I don’t think it’s a licensing thing. Maybe to put the “IMAX” logo on the case it is but Dune 2 particularly was shot digitally, there’s a billion things out there that are shot with the same camera that are released in 16:9
The 3d blu ray version of Guardians Vol. 3 has the shifting AR and Avatar WOW is fullscreen. There's a couple of aspect ratios for that movie.
It is a shame about both releases of Dune. It's like the feeling of the pan and scan days. If they do an opened up ar release i'll be a sucker and definitely get it.
It's nothing like pan and scan.
It’s disappointing IMAX is taking this route wanting expensive kickbacks for 4K discs.
What's really criminal is the official IMAX RUclips channel putting out trailers in only 1080p. lol
So with Nolan Films we go Blu-Ray disks
and with Denis Films we go with Torrents👍🏼
Its because as much as WE ALL love Physical Media, the companies aren't going to spend any extra time/money/effort into this for such a dwindling fanbase.
Fun fact: Nope has the sequences for IMAX in the physical copy!
Great video as always Jeff ❤. IMAX is naturally a subject so many collectors are passionate about. Why does Sony bother badging so many "IMAX Enhanced" without FULL Screen Image -Just with DTS-X Audio!? Really??
Great video! Unrelated but I just saw Rango (one of my favorite animated movies) is getting a 4k release and steelbook and I’m pretty excited. The blu ray transfer is fantastic so it’ll be interesting to see how the 4k looks, if it has any improvements, especially being an animated film. Maybe you can include it in one of your review videos if you get your hands on it.
Remember that the scenes shot with IMAX gear are still more crisp and more detailed than "regular" films stock scenes, so we still get those beautiful quality shots on home release, just without the aspect ratio. Gotta look at the bright side in those dark times ;)
let´s not forget that when we get the imax ratio in home releases we´re not only talking about the expanded image, we´re also getting cleaner picture, razor sharp scenes, everything is enhanced in those scenes, because the imax footage is a lot better than a regular camera footage, example: First man imax scene at the end, nolan movies, top gun 2, Nope, Batman v Superman, etc, etc
This is incorrect for a lot of films because they’re not actually shot in IMAX. It’s just the digitally shot picture with different framing. There’s only a handful of movies where you’ll see an actual improvement in video quality. Seeing a bigger, brighter picture is cool and can easily make you believe that the image is better.
BVS has a visible improvement in the 70mm IMAX scenes. @@matadorprincess
I would pay extra for an IMAX enhanced dune box set
Such an obvious answer to this that I didn’t think of. Thanks!
The other thing to remember is that many films released in IMAX have the aspect ratio opened to 1:90.1 for the entire film. This is sometimes forced by the studio, and not the directors intended aspect ratio. Dune Part 2 had a few scenes in 1:43.1, and rest of the film in 1:90.1.
for the entire movie for dune part two at the amc universal city theater it was completely full screen
interesting how at the Chinese theater it would switch back and forth
Man.. I just want my movies to fill my whole screen. I can’t express how much I hate those black bars.
6:41 That couldn't be more wrong. ALL films are mixed differently for home video. We don't really get theatrical mixes at home, and even if we did, they wouldn't sound as good.
the 3d blue ray for some marvel movies had the imax version
denis vileneuve was asked in an interview and said an imax version of the first film would be issued on 4k whilst he was promoting no2…..so dont know what happened
Man, I just started the video, and I already think I know what you're about to say. But thank you... thank you for looking into this and giving us the answer.
Thank you, I have the same question about that!! it is so disappointing
Dude, you omitted the amazing BvS and ZSJL 4k disc's in true IMAX AR.
I think those needed to be mentioned, as there are not many movies utilizing TRUE IMAX AR.
Except then you get black bars at the sides instead of above/below and lose screen width.
@@rosstee the cost of true imax ar
what zack snyder did is stupid. Most home screens are in 16:9. Having taller ratio on home video releases just for the sake of "IMAX" is waste of video bitrate. Nolan had the right idea, expanded ratio scenes should be in 16:9 to fill screen properly.
@@neobellic7258 its not stupid just because
You dont like it. Its a different and valid approach to the subject.
@@kondorr Were you around in the eighties and nineties? You'd have loved it, everyone had TVs in the IMAX ratio!
So if it costs money to have it even if it's not labeled IMAX, are those scenes just missing? Are they replaced? Is the replacement footage inferior (aspect ratio notwithstanding)?
just seeing the full picture for dune makes a world of a difference
I would never captured an audience in standard 2:39
I see this as a major fad for home video. Just like 3D blu ray was.
It will survive in the theatres. As long as theatres survive.
But it is such a niche thing at home, 99% of us don't care. Personally, I have never liked IMAX. And every film has some level of frame cropping. Including IMAX. To clean up the edges of the frame and shots.
This is sort of like the change that happened from full frame DVD to widescreen. People who make money selling the public gimmicks keep switching the aspect ratio of things, so that things can continue to be sold over and over. Example, full frame monitors and tvs to widescreen. Movies on blu ray, dvd that already released in one format now to widescreen. Then re released to "IMAX". It is all a gimmick.
So you see 20% more at the top and bottom. Meanwhile the sides are gone. And even some of that IMAX frame is STILL missing for cleanup and to tighten up the shot.
The sooner this gimmick dies in home media the better...
I disagree. 3D for home is way more flawed than IMAX-enhanced is. 3D has the two formats of glasses, the inconvenience of the glasses, the ridiculousness of 3D on a smaller screen, the loss of resolution and lack of max resolution potential, and the display and player hardware requirements. All IMAX enhanced does is let utilize the full screen that you paid for and who wouldn’t want that? Plus, the option of DTS:X although hardware is required for that aspect.
Its wild that IMAX owns an aspect ratio. That's like owning a shape or a color. Pretty sure full frame already existed long before the first IMAX theater popped up. 😂
Please correct me if I’m wrong but doesn’t switching aspect ratios on disc usually follow switching aspect ratios from theater film? I believe Dune 2 had a IMAX release and a scope release without switching aspect ratios.
Great video Jeff!
Thanks for clarifying ❤️
The Same seems to happen with laserdisc releases of both movies and music, Laserdisc releases seem to be longer than DVD or blu-ray releases at times. boggles the mind. Even stranger, with the 100th Anniversary release of Titanic, they did release extra footage on DVD and Blu ray, to an acceptable standard, yet, didn't cut into the film? Odd.
legendary to have The Room in a prominent place in the bookcase behind you 😂, respect
Interesting subject as a fan of imax versions of the latest movies I agree that we deserve both versions on physical media and most streaming platforms online or exclusively online only
7:50 ahhh ha. There it is 😀
Is the home version of IMAX audio still the same 5.0 system with no LFE channel?
Or using the DTS carrier, do they piggyback a DTS audio track for a .1 LFE again?
There are a few movies on disc, that just look better due to IMAX framing. The best I remember was Hunger Games. Then the Batman movies and Top Gun Maverick. I wish it was done more often because it's so immersive when well on some movies.
yes, very few
I would need to look back but iirc, Top Gun Maverick was advertised as shot for IMAX but not IMAX. Maybe this allowed them to bypass some of the licensing cost?
The Marvels movies in Phase 2 and 3 that have Imax footage, those scenes are on the 3D discs, except for Endgame & Infinity War. The directors said Imax would not allow it
That sucks. I wonder if they could get away with saying “Includes Fullscreen Scenes”? I guess not if they used IMAX cameras.
Thanks Jeff.
I always thought that IMAX should have their own distribution of IMAX movies on both physical media and streaming. That way those who care can at least get the right format even if its for a premium price.
The business aspect I can understand , it kind of makes sense from IMAX point of view. Now, in terms of aspect ratios I truly dislike the switching of ratios-it feels like a cheap trick. The first Dune has only a few scenes in IMAX so the 2.39:1 makes sense for home viewing. Dune Part Two was formatted in IMAX so the 1.90:1 (IMAX Digital) can be added as an alternate version for home viewing. James Cameron’s Avatar movies are also shown in 1.90:1 IMAX and are then modified to 1.78:1 (16:9) for home-it’s a win-win. I’m not buying Dune Part Two on physical media unless they add IMAX-have you noticed how wrong the close-ups look in the film in 2.39:1?
I love CinemaScope even with a video projector ! It gives great style ! IMAX is amazing in theatres. I am into the dead 3d and I have to live it in 4dx theatres only .. But don’t worry, soon there will be a new Blu-ray edition in IMAX : money is money
My biggest question is why aren't products that go straight to streaming like the Disney+ Marvel and Star Wars shows in 16:9? It will probably never see a theatre and most people will watch it on a TV so why the black bars?
ok so i can buy now the dune 2 disc :D
no need to wait for a imax release of part1 and 2.
I would've thought that they would want to limit full IMAX picture on video releases to draw people into the cinema, so that the cinema has something that you can't get at home.
And like jeff said, TVs aren't suited to the IMAX picture ratio, but with the advent of flexible OLED displays maybe someone can make a TV that can fold and change aspect ratio to suit an IMAX picture. Something like the LG Signature range of OLED TVs, I would love to see something like that. But then that would require a special anamorphic disc release formatted for that aspect ratio.
They don’t really have to do a “IMAX enhanced”. All they really have to do is format a 16 x 9 version and it be very close to the picture you get in IMAX.
I'm sorry Jeff, but this is confusing. You state in this that IMAX receives a licensing fee in part because they, "used IMAX cameras," so if they use those scenes they have to pay a percentage to IMAX. They didn't use two cameras to film the same scenes in these movies so whether or not they crop it to 1.78:1 (16x9) or 2.39:1 not they're using footage from those IMAX cameras. What you're basically be saying here is that IMAX has it written into their agreement with WB that they own any portion of the image out of the 2.39:1 scope. I just have trouble believing that, but I suppose it could be possible.
I don’t know the answer to your confusion, but it’s worth noting that the only ‘imax cameras’ that imax owns and rents out are their 15/70 imax film cameras, which outside of Nolan, very few things are shot using. The overwhelming majority of stuff shot for imax is on digital cameras that are designated as ‘imax certified’ i.e. imax has endorsed these digital cameras for use in films that will be getting an imax release. I can understand imax making money from the use of their imax film cameras, as they own them, and then possibly there’s an element of imax also potentially having some sort of interest (i.e. some form of, but I’d assume certainly not exclusive, ownership) of the footage shot on them, but from the limited amount I know I do not think it likely that imax owns any of these imax certified digital cameras or the footage shot on them that has an aspect ratio of 1.90:1 or 1.43:1 that’s intended to be released in imax. It would be more likely that it’s the manufacturers of these imax certified digital cameras owns these imax certified digital cameras, who rent them out to filmmakers, and it’s these manufacturers who probably pay money to imax to have them certified by them. Do note, I’m not talking about imax not having any form of ownership or interest in the final imax release of the film (the DCP, and then any home release that’s ‘imax enhanced’), as this it’s clearly the case that they do (i.e. the main point of Jeff’s video), but just not for footage shot on ‘imax certified’ digital cameras nor the ‘imax certified’ digital cameras themselves
I wonder why Christopher Nolan does not have Dolby Vision on his discs, he always says he wants the best for physical media and Dynamic metadata is better than static metadeta
This has really been bothering me! I finally bought Dune Part 1 yesterday because I was holding out on a switching aspect ratio and finally gave up hope.
I haven't seen the Dune 2 disc yet, just commenting on my similar thoughts about Oppenheimer...
I might be in the minority, but I thought the constant aspect ratio shifts on Oppenheimer were super distracting at first. Even after a few viewings at home I still don't quite understand Nolan's rhyme or reason as to why certain shots are in 16:9 vs 2.20:1. While shifting aspect ratios in general don't bother me when done appropriately, it often (again, in my opinion) looks better in theory than it does on a disc at home. This will probably be a hot take but I feel like Jordan Peele's Nope 4K disc utilizes Imax much more tastefully than Oppie. To be fair, I have never seen a real made for IMAX film in true IMAX so I can't speak to the theatrical experience, I just think it looks really annoying at home.
If you make a movie wih Imax cameras and release it in Imax in theathers, you HAVE to include it in a home release, especially when distributing it in physical media. That's why I'm sure it's the distributor's decision, and not the director's. It could be a sign of the fate of physical media.
Actually The Flash and Aquaman 2 had the IMAX aspect ratio left intact
James Gunn has had IMAX on all his disc releases since Guardians 1 or 2. Suicide Squad was all IMAX and the disc had all the IMAX scenes.
I mean... really? I don't know. Seems to me that they could simply release the disc with that aspect ratio, without saying "IMAX Enhanced" or whatever. The entire film was shot that way, and WB/Legendary own the film, not IMAX. It seems weird to say that IMAX itself owns some exclusive copyright or has exclusive licensing rights over a certain aspect ratio. The wider ratio that's on the disc is just a cropped version of the full IMAX ratio film. Furthermore, the 16x9 ratio that often gets used on discs like The Dark Knight for the IMAX scenes isn't actually the true IMAX ratio. So, again, it seems to me like WB should simply be able to release the film in 16x9 if they want to.
They could be getting greedy and release the all the dune movies after messiah with the imax ratios, so that people who already bought the physical copies would pay again
The thing is with Dune 2, none of the film was framed for 2.35:1. It was a switch between 1.90:1 and 1.43:1. In IMAX showings. Because of the framing, the grand scale of the scenes are lost at the 2.35 aspect. Warner released Justice League as well as a 4K ultimate edition of Batmas Vs Superman. They could justify Dune. Specifically Dune 2. Besides the increase in framing, the clarity of the IMAX native shots is way superior to what the standard footage looks like. It's not even close. When I saw Alita in IMAX, the difference was immediately noticeable. Studios are penny pinching these days. But 4K UHD buyers are the film enthusiasts. They should be supporting them. I don't need it on DVD or Bluray.
Gives an extra opportunity for studios to make us quadruple dip.
I would rather have a consistent aspect ratio than imax enhanced tbh. The only time I'd accept changing aspect ratio when it's a creative choice like in that movie I think is called censor.
well implemented the 70mm footage in the dark knight. a shame when prints don't take those into consideration.
Could WB be planning a later Dune 2 release with imax scenes included? Perhaps?
Thanks
I just saw a ghost story from 2017 and it was either 4:3 or 1:33 ( how they managed to get that release - leaves questions unanswered
I haven’t had a switching aspect ratio film yet. But I imagine it to be very irritating. I am fine with cinema scope if that’s how the film was shot.
Mission impossible 4 didn’t have imax scenes on any version for home but fallout did .
To have imax scenes on blueray (for a movie that is not 100% imax), would the black bars need to come and go on the sides? Rather than the bottom? Or is TV ratio = Imax ratio?
Usually Imax on bluray is 16:9 so fills the screen. Except Batman v Superman and Zack Snyders Justice League that had 4:3 imax with side black bars.
angry birds 2 doesn't even have an Imax version, it's already in 1.86:1, what would be the point of cropping it to 1.90:1 (what most "Imax" movies are in because true imax theaters are hard to come by
Why I love the picture size adjustment on my lg tv
What about Aquaman 2 , it's released in IMAX on Bluray.
I think they should just do IMAX ENHANCED DTS X on the disc and leave the image alone. I don’t like the shifting aspect ratio and I watch on a TV. So it is pointless. But I do have a IMAX compatible AVR so I would get more benefit that way.
Star Trek into Darkness has 1 or 2 scenes in IMAX. BvS 4K ultimate edition. All on disc.
Let's be honest here. The so-called "IMAX" on home video is pretty much the standard 1:78:1 aspect ratio. That is not the real IMAX aspect ratio, by any stretch. And, if I remember correctly, the only movie on home video that used the real IMAX aspect ratio was Zack Snyder's Justice League. Basically, we're talking about an image closer to the old 4:3 aspect ratio; so, on our modern, 16:9 tv's, that image would have black bars on the sides of the screen. That's exactly how Justice League looks on its disc release.
Mission Impossible Fallout blu ray and 4k disc definitely did it. I be Dead Reckoning did it as well
Dune 2 is entirely shot on IMAX ratio but too bad they aren't releasing in that ratio
Thanks, Jeff! Appreciate the info about IMAX being its own business, not just a format. That's a bit of an eye opener that I wasn't aware of. Makes me quite disappointed that WB didn't share/pay the extra shekels with/to IMAX to make a perfect disc release for both Dune movies. Or maybe IMAX and WB are holding off on a deal to have a separate release for a physical copy of Dune, which will press super-fans to double dip... capitalistic ingenuity at its finest, lol.
As a photographer, I find the constantly adjusting aspect ratios kind of disappointing. When movies are shot to be shown in multiple aspect ratios, as a cinematographer you can't really have any intention behind your compositions. You treat the frame as quite literally a photo frame where the image you are capturing perfectly sits within that shape. When you have to have that image fit 4-5 different shapes, from a square down to a thin rectangle, you can't shoot with much intention. I think Nolan's early films are his best looking because his films have thought out compositions, whereas his new ones since going for IMAX have all had a sort of generic centre framed, widely composed look so that they look okay in 1.43 as well as 2.35. I would quite happily watch Oppenheimer in 1.43 even on my TV if it meant it looked the same no matter where you watched it, and Nolan and his team could actually shoot for that intended look. I think 1.43 would actually suit the period setting even more as that was the standard in the 1940s.
As an example, look how much nicer Zack Snyder's Justice League looked in 4:3 versus the Whedon version that cropped his original shots to 16:9 - say what you will of the film itself, but Snyder's original compositions look a million times better in their intended format.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 has IMAX on selected scenes on physical disc.
I havent bought Dune 2 yet , hopefully they rectify this at some point
