The Damned - March 21 2024 - Sydney

- Not only was it the first time in 35 years that the 1980's lineup of Dave Vanian, Captain Sensible, Rat Scabies and Paul Gray have toured together, it was also billed as The Damned’s last Australian tour - talk about bitter/sweet.
As was fitting for the line up, the vast majority of songs played came from their earliest days, with more than half of them coming from two albums, Machine Gun Etiquette and Strawberries. They played a total of 24 songs. I recorded eight, concentrating of those I hadn’t captured before:
The History of the World (Part 1) (00:28)
Melody Lee (04:21)
Stranger on the Town (06:41)
Life Goes On (12:00)
Shadow of Love (16:13)
Dozen Girls (20:15)
Curtain Call (24:36)
New Rose (32:38)
As to whether or not it’ll be The Damned’s last Australian tour, that remains to be seen. There is already talk of a new album. Very hard to imagine that we won’t be seeing them back here in a few years, probably not with this line up, but in some form or other.

I have seen many many bands live, the best live gig I ever witnessed was the Damned in 1983, the one thing I remember was the drumming, just incredible, Rat Scabies, I will never forget that gig...please god, let this current line up carry on.
Great memory. We've all moved on a little since '83 but Rat certainly demonstrated he still has what it takes on this night. Hope you get to see this line up sometime soon.
From the Japan tour to the Australian tour …Sydney…The Damned are definitely the best !
They just keep go. Amazing band.
Curtain Call is such an epic Damned song - Takes me right back to many Damned concerts in London when the crowd would go completely mad in delirium
Damned4Ever❤
Takes me back to 80\81 Black Album n Strawberries. They were LOUD !!!!!!
Maybe not quite so loud these days. I've relented and started wearing ear plugs anyway. I want to try and keep what little hearing I have left.
Nice to hear Ratty - the Premier drummer - again.
Still going very strong. Great to have him back.
Brilliant voice
Thanks so much for posting, great quality video. I love seeing the Captain skipping around in my Palace shirt !!
I think we all loved seeing him dancing around in your shirt. So are you ever going to wash it again? 😁
Thanks for commenting.
Quality never fails guys rock on xx
Still sounding terrific after all these years.
wow great set list!

Couldn't ask for much better.
truly great stuff. Appreciate all your work Peter. It is appreciated!
Thanks very much. Glad you enjoyed it. Videoing and editing live music actually makes the shows even more enjoyable for me. I like the challenge of trying to capture some of their excitement. Thanks for commenting.
Absolutely fantastic, the boys are on fire 🔥 can't wait till Ctrop.
Must say the damned are playing better than ever. 😊
It was a terrific night. Let's hope they have many more years left in them (although I'm not sure how they keep that tour pace).
@@Peter_LiveMusic I saw them a month or so ago and they killed it. They were amazing
@@apctest8359 Yes, an amazing live band. Always well worth seeing.
its great seeing this video, this was the line up i 1st saw, fond memories
Yes, takes many of us back. Glad they decided to tour this line up again (even if it is their last tour down under). Thanks for commenting.
im just glad capt keeps his clothes on now lol @@Peter_LiveMusic
@@valkyrierules LOL
My favourite lineup. Strawberries was their finest release.
So much good music back then. Great to get the chance to see this line up again and hear many of those classic songs.
Not a patch on first album or MGE.
@@VincentRE79Strange discussion as HOTW is on The Black Album. Anyhoo - I reckon MGE and Strawberries are about equal, and both way better than DDD. All imho, of course.
@@kenhughes484 DDD is the album that got the band established and MGE was a great comeback for the band. I gave up buying their albums around Strawberries.
@@VincentRE79 Fair enough. There is no doubting the historical significance of DDD but, again imho, it’s not the greatest record outside of NNN. Taste ‘n’ that - tbh I love all their albums outside of NOTE. Cheers.
Sydney name reads and sounds so much similar to the way The Damned perform their songs. It's thematic, and that's great atmosphere.
LOLOLOLOL!!!!!!😂😂😂😂😂
Saw them in Sydney last year, would have like to have gone to this one but it was not possible after surgery. Glad to see it was filmed.
Sorry you couldn't make it along to this gig. Hope you are recovering well. This was another great performance. Let's hope it isn't really their last Australian tour.
@@Peter_LiveMusic thanks
@@kencratchley8697you are welcome lol
Thanks for this ! yep was there and was so pleased i finally got to see Rat play :) pity the sound was a bit crap where i was .
The 23:00 minute mark. Holy crap! So rockin'!
Life goes on is the best
Yes, great hearing the Captain on vocals. Terrific song.
Amazing! Thanks again Peter you legend for capturing my favourite band ❤ 🎉 Couldn’t get as close this time (4th row as opposed to 2nd last year), but loved it just as much. Is it really really the last Aussie visit? 😢😢😢😢 huge sob., say it isn’t so. Ps…Was great to see Rat smashing those drums to pieces…Curtain call solo, wow.
Another terrific night. Were you at the Sydney gig? Yes, great seeing Rat again and I'm very happy I decided to video 'Curtain Call'. I thought the crowd down the front mightn't be quite so 'restless' during it, giving me a steady shot. As for last ever tour? I doubt it ... I certainly hope not. Thanks for commenting.
I saw then in the 80's. Really good.
Ladies and Gentlemen...Mr Rat Scabies
Welcome back. Sir
Curtain Call is evolving into the epic composition it always has been during the Vanian-Sensible-Scabies-Gray era! And, Monty takes it over the edge with his keyboard wizardry.
A shorter set...but, a stellar one fer sure
I was hoping for something special from 'Curtain Call' and Rat didn't disappoint. Yes, Monty's keyboards definitely add another layer to it.
In case you think what I've uploaded here was their entire set, it wasn't. They played a total of 24 songs, a very decent length by anyone's calculations. You can find the entire setlist here:
www.setlist.fm/setlist/the-damned/2024/enmore-theatre-sydney-australia-43aa1bdf.html
@@Peter_LiveMusic I've found a few more videos from two of the Australian shows mucking about. They're all stellar performances.
Big kudos to you for uploading your excellent video captures. Us 🇨🇦 punters are extremely thankful.
I can't wait for the June 14th show here in Vancouver.
Cheers
@@dougsmith7083 You're most welcome. Enjoy the Vancouver show. I know it'll be great.
Awesome - God stuff to see them out and about still rocking
Still going strong. Plenty of good years left I'd say if this performance was anything to go by.
Great to hear rat playing shadow of love the best after all he made it 👏
Great seeing Rat behind the kit after all these years. And he showed us all he's still got what it takes.
@@Peter_LiveMusic - Absolutely blown away. Rat killed it. They were all great. I couldn't stop being humored over how cool Dave looked in that gangster outfit. Yep, seeing Paul Gray and Captain too...wow. You did a great job. TY
@@salskars6637 Glad you enjoyed it. It was a wonderful night (although I don't think Dave was too happy with the sound). Thanks for commenting.
@@Peter_LiveMusic - I was hopping Dave's lowered vocal sound was due to your recording. Bad job on the show's sound techs.
Cheers
@@salskars6637 Yes, poor sound mix. Dave didn't hang around for the final bow with the rest of the band. I think he'd had enough. Still, as always, so good to see The Damned still playing live after all these years.
New Rose still gives me a lazy lob on after all these decades 🤣
The one and only Mr. Rat Scabies is still "Neat, Neat, Neat", ladies and gents 30:35 🥁 👊🏻 🎸 🧷☠ 🥁.
Yes, I was very pleased to get that drum solo.
Is it just me or are they sounding better than ever! How can Rat play like that at his age?!?!
Rat was incredible, as were they all. I actually thought there were problems with the sound on the night. Not with the band. With the venue's mix. Dave certainly wasn't happy with it.
Because he’s not that old.
Interesting that they played so much from Machine Gun Etiquette, as that didn't feature Paul Gray. I'm hoping that Rat's return doesn't mean that every song from Darkadelic has gone, as that was a major achievement last year. Has anything from this album remained in the set?
Here's the full setlist. As you can see there were two songs from 'Darkadelic', both very good:
www.setlist.fm/setlist/the-damned/2024/enmore-theatre-sydney-australia-43aa1bdf.html
New Rose at 33 and a third 🥉
lol 😂
Saw this lineup in 1991.
Had no idea they were touring again in oz
May have been for the last time. Let's hope not.
Nice one Peter. Did you notice the sticker on Monty's keyboard?
LOL. I did indeed.
👍👍
That blue Rick is so pretty it's making me feel bad
Why no Nasty? That song kicks ass!
🍓🐖
why dosent Monty dance in new Rose
Not sure. Maybe because sadly, no roses were thrown onto the stage.
I think Abbie Cornish is one of those women who, no matter how much weight she puts on, will always look gorgeous. The same can't be said of the members of the Damned and their music.
Who the hell is Abbie Cornish? And who cares what you think? Plenty in the audience with weight problems but The Damned still sounds "gorgeous".
Says some worthless fecking nobody.
Wow! More reason to head to Boston in May!
Great Damned
