Sometimes in life when something truly awful happens I ask myself, "how could this be a best case scenario?" It often feels preposterous to even consider that because of how bad the situation may be, but I find it frees up my creative mind to see what's happening from a totally different perspective. Perhaps your company closing actually leads you to an even better opportunity that you couldn't see before? It seems like you'll get through this just fine. Takes a lot of courage to share a video about a moment like this, and you handled it and expressed yourself exceptionally well.
Ryan, thank you so much! You guys are providing some of the best advice that I think applies to just life in general and so grateful for the wisdom y'all are sharing. I'm going to take your advice and write down the best case scenarios for myself because so far, it's been all about fear. THANK YOU! 🙏
We are entering a major Economic collapse globally which will be 100 times worse than the GREAT Depression. Now is the worst time to plan to have kids/start a family condemning innocent kids to a horrific future or to marry which leads to never ending debt trap.
One thing I would suggest is never get comfortable at your employer. Treat yourself as your own company all of the time. Don’t do more work than you are getting paid for based on your market value. If they aren’t paying you enough, scale your time to match their pay and then use your free time to work a side hustle or two. Diversify how you make your money as well as how you invest your money. Don’t take options instead of cash or bonuses. Always cash out and invest that money diversely. Unless you are actually one of the founders, their paying you with options is just a way for them to get cheap labor. Your upside is always going to be a tiny fraction of theirs despite the fact that they will be expecting you to work just as hard as them.
Same. "Act like a contractor". You're just there to trade hours for money. If you aren't an owner, you're just a replaceable peon. You have to be ready to jump. I really enjoy what I do. I'd be programming still even if I wasn't paid to program.
@@quademasters249 Agreed. I always tell my younger colleagues: "There are two types of startup employees: missionaries and mercenaries. Be a mercenary".
Yup. I got let go from my last job of 9 years and honestly, I was mentally and physically exhausted from being there so long. I'd tell my Mom over and over that I want something else and that I'm not happy there at the time and she knew and told me to keep at it we'll figure something out. After that, I struggled on my own looking for a job. 2 days ago I applied for a position at Faithful Friends as a Car Caretaker and I really love being there with the cats and I hope one day that I can work there despite the $13.25/hr minimum wage.
just my notes in case somebody wants to use it: 1. increase growth in my own department. Thinking about planning for job security and the future. Think about skills that you can bring to new employees. Negotiate about a severance package or find another job to put in the table, so when anything happens it can be as a back up. 2. When you feel stagnant. If they don't increase your salary then move on. Thinking about growth like education, training, etc. so that you don't left behind in case you need to get a new job you don't feel lost meaning you catch up with the current market demand. 3. Don't be too comfortable in the company, future, and career. Don't think you'll stay in this job forever. It's ok if you feel comfortable but continue to grow.
Mikee I just wanted to tell you thank you for you. I am 39 and also just started a RUclips and also am unemployed from a career I was in forever. Finding your RUclips brings me so much comfort and makes me feel not alone. So thank you!!
Let me just tell you one very important lesson that I learned in close to being 40 at this point. And that is to really trust the timing of your life…that you are EXACTLY where you’re meant to be. And by that, I mean that you are not yet seeing it now but I assure you 100% that you’ll land in a much better place in your next chapter, whether that be a better career or maybe this channel will take you somewhere far beyond you could imagine. Whatever that may be, just trust the process. Your next beautiful chapter awaits and I can already see and feel it for you! All you need is to TRUST and have faith whether to the universe/God/whatever spiritual side you are. 🙏🏽☺️ I’ll tell you more below my comment. ❤❤❤
🥹🥹 - I know we just met online... but your light has been so bright in my comment section. Still feeling so lost but also leaning on that this is my journey and the next chapter is ahead... a blank page ready to be written. Appreciate you and your insight and light ❤️
"hear, here!". I also believe there is a plan but my outlook is more mixed. I love that the powers that be / universe allow you to have such a positive outlook. I bought a notebook to write notes on different subjects that pop up in my head to find interesting and the title on the front says "trust the timing of your life". The last subject I wrote on was ominous optimism which is where I live often.
Yes although I don't believe in God, I do believe trusting yourself. we are this complex machine of logic and emotions and it's a mystery how they all operate but we are more than the sum of our actions and things that happen to us. By that I mean actions and events don't define us, they are just the tip of the ice berg of who we are and we are. And that is why I believe even when we made mistakes or bad things happen to us, continue to try and believe in yourself and make efforts and good things will come again, it may not be instant but it will come. Good things don't last forever but neither do bad things!
Hey Mikee. I’m not sure made “mistakes”, as much as you simply lived life. I’m a designer (print) and I know the creative field always ebbs and flows. I think you are extremely fortunate to have been with the same company for so long. Try to not think of being let go as a failure or ending, think of it as a “completion”. You’ve finished that chapter and now you’ll start your next adventure. At the end of the day a job is just that, a job. They don’t define who we are as an individual or our character. Keep your head up. Good things will come. I’m very excited to see where your path takes you. Hope you continue to make videos about it.
Hey Eric... thank you... and wow, think of it as a completion. That's so heartwarming in a sense and a great way to look at this situation. Appreciate you taking the time to provide some wisdom for me 🙏
I literally put in my two weeks notice two hours before finding your video. I had worked at the company going on 11 years doing civil engineering, and when my new manager came on board, I was not ready for the amount of stress they would bring along with them. Unfortunately, there was a lot of drama around Christmas resulting in me being blamed and yelled at for the new manager's lack of proper scheduling. After being "in training" for a month trying to get some sort of work, I knew I was being shut out. Even though it was unplanned and sudden, I knew I had to leave for the sake of my mental health and my families well being. Financially, I'm not sure how or what we will do but I'm lucky to have my husband supporting me through this. Now looking at new job listings, everything you mentioned like the imposter syndrome and fear are resonating with me so much. I was too comfortable and didn't try to improve while I had the chance. Knowing I'm not the only one who had these sort of feelings when it came to losing a job oddly calms my nerves, helps me know I'm not alone, and that my feelings are valid. I hope you are able to heal in your time off and have all the success you desire in any future career opportunities
Yes got fired from my warehouse job after 7 years and honestly it’s been a struggle , I didn’t think a job could have so much power over one’s mental health
I'm in marketing. This is one of my greatest fears being in this career field. I definitely echo everything you're saying. I'm so sorry this happened to you! You had an incredible 18 years at your previous job but you have the whole world! Looking forward to your next chapter! You have this!!
I'm a new sub that discovered you through a DJII pocket video! I've been through 3 layoffs (in a row) and have finally learned with this last one and especially trusted into this current job market that you should never feel like you need to be loyal to any company, diversify your income and most of all - do not attach your identity to work. You're more than your job. Wishing you all the best and give yourself some grace.
I’ve been a scientist for 18 years too, everything is becoming automated and I have been procrastinating about taking on extra courses that are of similar discipline like a business analyst. Your video has given me inspiration to go do it!! Feeling uncomfortable is growth. Thank you so much for sharing. You know what to do now, it’s never too late.
No reason to for self blame. I'm sure you were an excellent employee. Since your company went out of business, it's not a given that they will give you a severance package, if they can't make payroll. You'll find your way. There are no mistakes. Only growth.
Lost my job in October of 2022 due to surgery, but after resting and regrouping I found my current job in February of 2023; definitely take your time and decide what path would bring you the most joy in life. Sending you lots of positive vibes!
Mikee, I just found your channel a few months ago when I watched your video about starting RUclips at 40. That video was so motivating to me, and helped me find my stride in the sales position I was in. Two days ago, at 40 yrs old, my entire team was laid off from our tech company. This video came at just the right time. Thank you and hoping that new role opens up to you quicker than you imagined🙏🏽💙
I don’t comment often on RUclips videos, but this video really resonated with me. I’m a photo retouching artist, and have been working professionally in the field for about 3 years, and did freelancing for 5-6 years prior. I totally agree that the creative field is constantly evolving (especially with this social media age we’re in). I enjoy my job, but I have felt a big stagnant and want more creative opportunities. It’s time for us all to light a fire under us and just take new chances and opportunities! I wish you luck in your future career, I know things are going to work out! 😁
Always keep moving forward! I worked security for about 5years bounced between different places ended up doing TSA for almost 2 years they ended up letting me go because I “falsified” the way I left my last job. I felt defeated because it was good paying and I was almost a lead. After that I started studying for a career in the AV industry while working other shitty security jobs and eventually I landed myself a great job probably the best I’ve had. But it wouldn’t of happened if I didn’t get let go and had something to inspire me to do more for myself. Sometimes we’re pushed out of positions we think we be belong in to fall into positions that we know we deserve/need.
This might sound super cliche, but I have learned through my life that things absolutely do happen for a reason. I know at the moment they happen we don't understand it, nor see the reason why, but as time passes it will become more clear. Go through this with an open heart and kindness toward yourself. As the dust settles clarity will come. Lean into the discomfort and this new found time for introspection and reflection. It sounds strange but allow yourself to grieve and so to say "empty you cup" so new things will be able to fill it back up. You seriously got this. Sending love - A.
"As the dust settles clarity will come" feeling that so much. Def allowing myself some time to grieve. I had no idea losing a job could feel so much like a break up. But I guess is makes sense as parting ways with things you love, once loved or grew out of hurts no matter what it is. Thanks so much for your insight and support 🫶🏼
Im so sorry this happened to you. I appreciate you making this video. I have been with my company for 18 years and feel this so deeply. I started looking for jobs last year when we had a change in leadership and felt so behind. At my experience level the expectation is that I should be at a higher level and I was never afforded those growth opportunities at my current company. I honestly should have left early on and moved around to explore other opportunities. One take away for me is that I realized that I don’t love what I do and plan to pivot to something else. I am grateful for my job and the stability it has provided but sometimes we need these whispers or a big push to make us realize what we’re really meant to do. Much love to you as you move through processing this experience. Can’t wait to see what’s next for you❤
Am in the same boat, was just made redundant last week Monday. I thought I'd be staying in my company until retirement. Today I actually just wanted to give up. Since I don't know what to believe in anymore, this company is one that is well-known in it's field so this really came as a shock for a lot of us. We were promised stability and all that, but what a way to start the new year. I feel you, and I think you can definitely bag another job! Personally, it helps me just have a schedule to maintain some form of structure. Otherwise, I might end up just staying in bed and wait for life to end. XD
Sorry to hear of the job loss! I’ve been through something similar and while it will take a while to accept the change, you will be better off on the other side. Take some time for yourself first, then when your mind is clear you will find your path. You’ve got this :)
Wow. First of all, I appreciate your honesty. I am sorry to hear this news. I found you a couple of months ago and you quickly became one of my favorite channel. Bigger and better things will happen for you. Everything happens for a reason Mikee. Keep being positive and remember you have a great support team. Your family and your now RUclips fam.
Hi Monica - thanks for being part of my RUclips Fam 🥹 and taking the time to comment and throw your support and kind words my way. Truly do appreciate it!
I didn’t realize we were in such similar fields. I just hit 6 years at my creative job in tech and I can’t say the possibility of losing it in this economy doesn’t cross my mind. A lot of this resonated with me and has inspired me to look for new ways to grow my skills this year. Thank you for being vulnerable. Sending you 🫶🏻 and looking forward to watching this next chapter unfold for you!
So wild that this coincided with your 10.000 subscriber count and now your second highest viewed video! I’m so proud of what you’ve accomplished on this channel. Despite the mistakes that you say that you’ve made, I hope you realize how much you’ve grown as a creator since you’ve launched this channel. During a worldwide pandemic! I honestly feel like this is just the beginning. You’re a brilliant storyteller.
You articulate yourself really well on camera and provided helpful tips in this situation. Sending positive vibes you'll find whatever it is you need next!
You are not alone. I've been working with the company Im at for 9 years and a lot of people are getting laid off in February due to losing a contract. I feel lost because I feel behind in my career. I see I need to update my skills and it's overwhelming with all the options out there. I got too comfortable. I wish you luck in your journey to finding a job. Hopefully, you update us on your journey as you update your skills. ❤
I had 20 yrs,.. just beginning to get seniority. I had everything. My co workers were all jumping in on early retirement,.. I was convinced it was a great, earned thing... I realized late, I didn't want this,.. but actually was too late. I stressed 24/7 trying to get back!! ... I lost my job!! I realized hiw much I loved and needed my job, that held to much of my daily life and structure. I went into Depression.. and now, unable to do anything, go anywhere,... and have no desire to live.,.. yes,.. my joy of life is gone,.. and I suffer from anhedonia and insomnia. My health is declining and family wish I could see thing's they're way,... that it's gonna be better, that I should just let go, move on....... but, move on?.. I just want my life back, I want to continue doing my job at my workplace.... wish I didn't listen to them,... and thought more about what I actually was doing...... 💔😞
Hey bud.. man I'm sorry to hear. Have you thought about looking into counseling or therapy? Hang in there, things WILL get better if you allow it to. Wishing you the best ❤️
I really empathize with the feeling and fear of what’s next and being lost. I moved back to the US for grad school at 37 and am about to graduate and enter a new industry (entertainment) and there is that feeling of being behind my peers. I have no answers, just wanted to commiserate. I hope an amazing opportunity is about to appear in your inbox.
Hey there, thanks for sharing and empathizing with me 😭 And don't worry, grad school is no easy feat so I'm sure you will thrive once you dip your toes into the entertainment industry. Wishing you all the best as well on this next chapter of your life!
I had a similar experience in 2022 when my company went bankrupt I had 14 years in at the age of 67! I am now in forced retirement but I did it to myself too. I saw the warning signs but lost interest for the last 5-years in starting over elsewhere as I believe it would not matter as my industry was in trouble, it was time to leave for good so my age played in my favor to a degree. Your video is very helpful you are very insightful! Good luck, I am sure you are a terrific member of any team you pick!
I feel you! I have been at my company for over 10 years in a high position. I made the same mistakes that you have made. We got bought out recently and I feel more and more underappreciated and taken advantage of. They have been firing a lot of people and even though I still have my job, I no longer feel safe. I am now looking for other options to make sure that I am safe financially no matter what they decide. It's time to take our power back. YOU GOT THIS!!
Thank you for being so vulnerable and giving this gift of your experience. I had take aways. Be well! Sending prayer. Knock on the doors because one is for you!!
I think impostor syndrome is actually caused by peers among you, managers always trying to tell you're not doing your best and colleagues who talk bad behind you back. I got this a lot. It's a trauma it's hard to heal. I also lost my job on Christmas. I had 12 years on the field and it's impossible to find another job. I really think the job market is awful right now. It surely is not like in the past. In the job description now the skills are way more advanced than when I was searching for a job in the past. In my field they want you to know multiple programming languages and they also ask for devops skills. Times have changed and it's not easy to get another job.
So sorry to hear about your job loss. I recently was laid off too and was completely blindsided as the business is growing and our team is understaffed as it is. I am trying to stay positive and trust that something better is coming, and I believe the same for you too! 🖤
Hey man I just discovered you a couple months ago. I'm sorry to hear where you are at the moment but I'm sure you will pick yourself back up when the time is right for yourself. I'm very much at the beginning of my career, if anything I don't feel like I'm at stage 1 or even stage 0 but stage -1. Nevertheless where you are, I believe it is always possible to get back to where you were and/or climb higher than before. These lessons always hurt, always disrupt who we know ourselves to be. But stick in there! You're not defined by your job title. You're a human being with creative skills. Appreciate you being vulnerable out here. Stay well :)
Hey there, thanks so much for taking the time to throw your support my way, it's been so helpful in not feeling so sorry for myself lol. And keep your head up with you career, we all start somewhere and sometimes even over... like me 😭
Where one door closes a better one opens. We’ve been through stuff like this too but we were there for each other and we made it buddy. Good things will come to you because you put good things out there. Blessing to you both. ❤
Best of luck with your next role. I can relate with this so much tho. I'm too comfortable earning mid 6 figs right now and for the last 1 year I haven't really done enough continuing education - conferences, new skills, certifications. I gotta get back on track asap. Great advices man.
Great video 🎉 Don’t be too hard on yourself, sounds like you have a lot of experience that you will be able to apply to your next project. We all get comfortable sometimes, it’s human nature, but moments like these can really stretch your character and help you discover what you really want to do in the next phase. It’s been said: “If you’re not scared, you’re not growing.”
OMG, Mikee. I'm so sorry to hear about your job loss. But your right. Your OGs are here for you. I went through the same thing back in 2016. The company I worked for, for 19 years decided to close their doors. They were a family-owned company that was open for 50 years. I know how you feel, because I knew I should have left years before, but I was comfortable and familiar with my job, so why would I leave. But just like you when it happened, I didn't have enough experience for what was going on around me. So, I was forced to go into a very different kind of job. Anyways, I wish you the very best in your job search. You are a very intelligent young man and very well-spoken man, that someone would be crazy not to hire you.
Cathy! Thank you and I appreciate you! Thanks for also sharing a bit of your story with me and happy to hear you were able to bounce back. 18/19 years is such a long time, it's like we went through a massive breakup 😭 Appreciate the kind words as well ❤️🥹
Reflecting on my 3 years at my current job, I've come to realize the need for growth. Stepping out of the comfort zone is challenging, but as you said, "that's life". Wishing you the best in finding your path soon!
Thanks Artem - so easy to get stuck in comfortability. Sometimes that can be ok but we owe it to ourselves to check in with ourselves periodically. Thanks for the support!
Mikee you got this for sure, it’s sad to really hear that you lost the dream job, but you could look at it in a different way. You now have more time to figure things out no matter how scary it can be, think of it as a different direction. Like you had said you wanted things to slow down but not like this, think of it as a chance to really take the time to try out different things. Who knows you could definitely find the dream job again, much love 💕
I’m so sorry , Mikee. Appreciate your vulnerability and openness on such a difficult topic. I think the lessons you share here about advocating for yourself in the workplace will help so many people. Tough times for sure but it’s also exciting to be able to explore new possibilities. Sending you all the love. You got this, boo! ❤️
Dreams can change as people and circumstances do Stay strong as you are in the beginning of of 5:14 your journey My life changed 4 times before I settled in twenty five years ago Embrace change as a challenge and best of luck
Hey Buddy I found you last week on RUclips. I’m so sorry to hear about your employment situation. I’ve been there my brotha. You are definitely handling 100x better than me. My only advice would be to keep your spirit high and see the silver lining in this situation. I know it’s hard to see it when you are in it, but I can promise you you will get through it. DO NOT let depression & anxiety get the best of you, as it did to me. Meditation & exercise helped me alot. I hope this helps you my brotha. Sending you lots of positive energy.
Hey man, thank you for the advice - I'm week one of wallowing but hoping to get myself out of this hole soon. Start to get some movement in so I can start to feel like myself again. Thank you for your insight and positive energy - I'm taking all I can get 🙏
Howdy! I work in tech, which is typically lucrative, but the economy is terrible right now, so everyone is losing their jobs. Businesses are lowkey freaking out and products and services are shuttering left and right. But remember, this is temporary and you're a savvy creative who will find a way to make it work. Do not take it personal that you were laid off. There's nothing you could've done to prevent it. The fact that you lasted 18 years at your gig is unprecedented in this era of careers. That's very rare. Take your time to grieve. Feel everything in the moment, don't rush to be happy and self-medicate. Otherwise, the sadness will manifest into bitterness later. You will heal. It's common to feel down or imposter syndrome or low confidence after a situation like this, especially for creatives. But you didn't do anything wrong. Businesses tend to undervalue creative disciplines when it's in trouble. It was purely a business decision that you were laid off. *The business failed you,* not the other way around.
Hey, you may behind the technology or innovations but you certainly have many soft skills that are equally important. You communicate well, seem to be approachable, friendly, open minded - and experienced! Good luck to you!!!
Looking from the outside in, from the points you made it seems like ‘ it’s happening for you not to you’ as the saying goes. That was such a blessing you got to experience working your dream job for 18 yrs. And maybe it was the dream job for that age and stage of your life and you’ve outgrown it and now for this present age and stage of your life it’s time for a new thing that’s gonna light up a fire inside you allow to develop more and not be complacent. 🎉Good Luck on this new path 🎉
"it’s happening for you not to you" - my gosh I FELT that 🫶🏼🥹 Thanks so much for your insight - taking notes from all the comments from all you amazing humans ❤️
Mike, thank you so much for this video. 🤗 You are handling this situation with such grace and compassion. Thank you for sharing your story so authentically. I went through a similar situation as you and found myself trying to launch my own business this year. RUclips is a relatively new thing I’m beginning to explore as a content creator. I look forward to seeing more of your content! Much love and support from Oklahoma. Jordan
Im so sorry to hear this, but thank you for being so vulnerable with us. You’re right, we ARE gonna cheer you up and tell you YOU GOT THIS! I’m always conflicted between being positive but not that toxic positivity, you know? So definitely take it slow and grieve this big life change but from the short time following you, I can see you’re a determined individual and you will find the next place that’s best for you. Cheering you on!
Thanks guys! I totally understand the toxic positivity lol, yall get it! But nothing toxic here, everyone has been super supportive and I've been taking notes from all of your tremendous amount of insight and wisdom, so thank you again!
This breaks my heart to hear, after putting in so much time in one place. I'm sorry you lost your job, BUT... This could be a sign that you are supposed to move on to something else career wise and there could be a greater opportunity just waiting for someone like you to seize! I know you will be okay! You are very talented, and any place would be lucky to have you working for or with them.
Thanks Darcy 🥹🫶🏼 - I think that's what hurts the most, I loved working for this company but again, I knew it wasn't forever. Time to put my big boy pants on 😭 but maybe just another week of feeling sorry for myself 😂
You’re so strong and capable, intelligent & inspiring! I’m sorry you’re experiencing this tough season, but I just KNOW this is going to lead to a season of growth and prosperity in your career and with RUclips/your creative endeavors. Thank you for sharing your wisdom even while going through this in real time!! I’m always rooting for you, friend 🫶🏽
I’m exactly here too. I got complacent after I received my last promotion for a position I was completely under qualified for but I shined and still thriving on. However looking in the market I am being under paid by 40% and will take your advice to show them all the other offers I been getting! Good luck in the new exiting chapter!
Know your worth! But also please take the time to think your situation through, I'd hate to be the catalyst for anyone possibly making the wrong career moves lol! But like you said, you're thriving! Happy for you!
This was a very honest and introspective video. I'm in engineering, but I see peers making the same mistake all the time. They're getting paid pretty well and they get comfortable and complacent and stay in the same team at the same company for far too long. Over the years, I've warned a number of them that I think they need to make a change, but they are too comfortable and they prioritize too many other things over their careers - their hobbies, their side hustle, etc. I've seen some of them eventually lose their jobs after 10+ years and really struggle to find a new one. For some, it took over a year. So if there's one thing i disagree with, it's the idea that it's OK to be comfortable in your job. IMO, if you've been comfortable in your job for over a year, it's time to start looking for a new one.
Excellent advice. I’m in the medical field and am like your husband. I can retire at my current job. It is also a curse because the same mistakes of complacency can keep you from growing and finding healthier situations.
Great video man. In a similar position except I was self-employed for that many years. The same thing, COVID ruined my online business. Gotta stay strong and roll with the punches.
Nice video. I’m gonna only add two things: 1) Have an emergency fund. The moment you start a job start saving it automatically. It could mean 30, 40, 50 or 60 dollars a pay check but only use it for an emergency. 2) if your layoff package is unfair, you now have money to see a lawyer. (Ie emergency fund!). I know of 2 separate people who each work for their respective companies for over 15 years. Their package was unfair, they each went to a lawyer and both got over 12 months of pay. Had they not saved up an emergency fund, they wouldn’t have gotten their money. They didn’t pay more than $10k for their lawyers services.
Such good tips thank you! I tried to stay away from finances a bit, aside from severances packages as finances alone could be a whole video in itself (which is also so important)... but thank you! These are so spot on.
Sending big hugs!! 🤗 I can totally relate to everything you’re feeling - I was laid off from my job of 9 years last year and I spent most of 2023 being so sad, lost and forgetting my worth. Some things that helped me were 1. Getting on unemployment 2. Remembering money can come to me in many ways and I can always pay off any credit card debt super quickly - like it will all be okay and the money will come, it’s safe for me to still live and buy stuff because this won’t last forever 3. Putting energy into my RUclips channel and candle business while still applying for jobs. Give yourself time to process, grieve and finally relax - time feels so different when you no longer have a job - enjoy this adjustment! I have a friend who is making more than enough to pay all her bills from RUclips so it is possible and can be more than coffee money. Love up on yourself right now and take your time. This is temporary and whatever that’s going to be next for you will be better than you could have ever imagined! Blessings come to us in mysterious ways 💫 you got this!!
Hey there! Appreciate your insight, thank you! Especially the part about time feeling different. No one has mentioned this yet but this is the weirdest feeling ever. Especially as I'm still processing and grieving, I feel bad for getting myself together and getting the ball rolling. But you've helped me feel validated that I can take some time to collect myself without the guilt. tysm! ❤️
Mikee that word Comfortable hit home …I was in a similar situation at my last job for 20 yrs and I knew it wasn’t gonna last forever and I knew should have been making some moves …and then that news came ….on a positive note your 18 yrs at that company is gonna help you out when you go interview for another job ….it seems like you have a great support system at home Mikee so I’m 💯 your gonna be fine …me personally I don’t feel your gonna have any problem finding a better gig …you got this Mikee 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
I know that 2024 is going to be a great year. I also had a crazy start to the new year my cars handbrake failed literally on new years day! I though that it was an omen to say that this year would be horrible but instead i learned that it was to show me I had people around me when i spent 2023 feeling so alone. Maybe this awful thing will actually be exactly what you need and in time it will show itself. Your so amazing and have alot of love around you so i know things will work out for you and you can look back at this and be happy life pushed you in the right direction ❤
I think a lot of us get complacent. I also think a lot of us don't have contracts and, even if you do, I'm not so sure companies would agree to month-for-every-year severance packages. Don't beat yourself up too badly. A lot of us have lost jobs. It feels crummy now but you'll look back one day and see it was just part of your journey.
I watched this video all the way through because of your authenticity and demeanor. The career tips you shared were also spot on. Maybe this was the reset you needed to go in an entirely different direction. I think you have what it takes to make more than coffee money on RUclips. 😊
Hey Mikee ....I just found your channel. First, let me say, thank you for posting this incredibly vulnerable video. I actually was feeling a bit nauseated listening to it because it sounded like you were telling a version of my own story. Clearly a sign of some sort. I recently lost my job in 2022 due to the same reason. I teach in healthcare and the school ended up closing due to being unable to come back from the pandemic and low student enrollment. I resonate with EVERYTHING you said. Second, the BEST thing that I could possibly offer is that your message reached ME and soo many others! This video actually made me feel validated. My wife is working in job that she is excellent in but actually hates the politics of it. So, while she is bringing home the money, I am feeling unworthy, not doing my part, etc. I have gone on tons of interviews and always the same response of being over qualified or going through such a mental masturbation of an interview that I would realize that the company or school and I were clearly not a good match. I am in a bardo of sorts, an in-between of WTF do I do now?? Didn't plan on being without a job for this long. I have recently started an LLC to start teaching on my own. While I am confident in my teaching ability and skills, I still feel vulnerable and wanting to throw up. Finally, I must tell you that YOU, MIKEE ROGERS, have inspired me! I needed to see and hear your voice in this moment. Thank you for sharing yourself, Donnie and your vulnerability here on You Tube. YOU DO HAVE THIS!! I am deeply grateful. KEEP GOING! Perhaps, I will even start a You Tube channel too. From my heart to yours , sending you and Donnie tons of love💜
Hi there, first I want to say thank you so much for your support and also for taking the time to share a bit of your story. I'm glad this video resonated with you in some way (not glad you are going though a similar situation) but if my story inspired at least one person, then it was worth sharing. Congrats on starting on your LLC, your confidence and vulnerability will work hand in hand! Thank you again and sending love right back to you and your wife! ❤️
My wife and I gave up our careers 14 years ago because of stress and health related issues in our employment, Now we have a 14 year old daughter ( not sure how 😄)and work for ourselves doing what each of us loves to do. You and your partner sound so talented that here in New Zealand we need people just like you guys. One door closes and sometimes the whole world opens up. And lastly,NO ONE ever says later on in life.. I wish I had worked more!!
Thank you for sharing! Still waiting for the world to open but I can say I'm trying to enjoy the jounrey as much as possible! Would love to visit New Zealand one day. I here so much good things about it!
Sending good vibes..I got let go in August 2020 and it sucked. It took me almost 6 months to land somewhere. I ended up at a place that pays me well and gives me the flexibility to be present for my kids. Things always end up working out. I’m sure it will for you too ❤️
I appreciate your vulnerability and honesty. This is the first time I've stumbled upon your channel, and I can tell you are a person who takes their career seriously and as a person who does the same your advice has been taken to heart and is appreciated. I know this video will help a lot of people and truly at the end of all this people are what really matters. Of course, there is the little thing about having to live in the real world and support yourself, etc. sigh! With that I have this to say, after listening to you, I just know if you were able to be successful all these years and even have a RUclips channel, it is all going to work out. Change is hard and stressful, but I promise you will be OKAY!
I literally changed fields this year to improve my skillset. I hate computers and now do data entry in a buisness field to overcome my field and expand my skills. Its wild but so far i love it
Hi Mikee. This is the first time I have seen your channel. I was in the same boat as you. My company is closed and I too was laid off. Fortunately I found a job quickly. But I was in your same situation where I got comfortable and didnt keep learning the latest tech. I thought I would retire with my company since my company was old and established. Dont worry about not fitting every job listing. No one fits all the requirements. Also, this may be an opportunity to do something different or try something new. Best story I heard about being laid off was from a coworker. He was in construction and was laid off. Took some classes and ended up in tech. He said years later ran into his old mananger and thanked him for laying him off because it lead to a new career. Best of luck to you.
you got this, Mikee! i'm of course sorry you lost your job but it's good to know you have people there to support you. unfortunately, i know a lot of people who have been laid off in the past. sometimes they use it as a chance to re-evaluate their career or they might go all in on another venture (like RUclips or their own business). wishing you the best as you navigate this new space 💗
Don't be too hard on yourself. I know it's easier said than done (I'm talking about my personal experience). But honestly you will wake up one morning you will realise that you are making something amazing 😊
Your advice is invaluable! even in a situation like this, you still manage to give value to people. You are wonderful human beings, and I wish you all the best for your life and career!
This happened to me last year Mikee so I know exactly how you feel! Now that I'm going back to work already, my advice is to be super intentional with your time (whether it'd be resting, being creative, inspiring, etc.). Do everything with intention because this season will pass by quick. Do the things you've always wanted to do, now is the best time :) Best of luck! Looking forward to more vlogs!!!
Awww mikee I don’t know if to feel sad or happy for you because I know strongly that , this situation is about to turn around for your good. Of course don’t see it in the beginning because of how lost and hurtful we feel. Come on 18 years on something you and your team build from ground up could be considered your baby so I truly understand. But my little unsolicited advice is to look to the future ahead after you have grieved just a little bit not much because you will be so much happy , you will thank the gods your job failed at the time . There’s something so special about you when I found you I had to stay here , your calmness, your worth ethics I don’t know you definitely have got this . Also thanks to hubby for being supportive. ❤
Hi Mikee! Just found you from a different video and so sad that this happened to you and your coworkers. I hope you all find new jobs that are emotional and financially satisfying and bring you happiness as well 💕 you got this!
Also use your connections!!! I got laid-off in 2021 from my first marketing tech job during the major tech layoffs. My manager who quit that company before the layoffs moved on to another company and heard I got laid off, offered me a job on her team and I'm forever grateful for her for reaching out to me. ❤
I’ve found, when God closes one door, it’s because he’s about to open another even bigger, better door. You got this! Just trust in him and thank you for having the courage to share your journey. 🙏🏽
You are still young and nows the time to get that training you think you need and or move into something else. Dont beat yourself up!! All this is a learning experience and it all happens for a reason. You will see all that 5-10 years from now. Best wishes for you and your partner.
I think all of us who lost a job at one point or another know exactly what you’re talking about. You are lucky though, in the fact that you have a partner who can keep you afloat for the time being. I would not rely on “community” though, as that’s a cap even for fake emotional support. It’s about grinding, and hustling. It’s time to look in the mirror and be truthful to yourself where you are in the job market. All I can tell you is that when I lost my job due to “duplication of roles”, emotionally, it was such a gut wrenching feeling, similar to being dumped… but professionally, it was awesome for me to land in a much better position later. Yes, it took me months to find another, but coincidently doubled my salary due to it being a related field. Life is funny that way, because I was content with that company, earning slightly above average, and would have retired in that complacency. GL
I resonate with a lot of what you said! Being laid off allows you the opportunity to do some self-reflection and think about some of the choices you made while there. All of it is a valuable lesson learned and now that you know, you will do better in your next role. You will also know your limitations. Congrats on your breakthrough of self-reflections and I am so excited to see what’s next for you!
@@MikeeRogers You are more than welcome! As a person who has been laid off twice, I know you pain and I understand your frustration! What helped me is clinging to the things that I valued the most: decorating my home 😂 and spending time with my family! Think of it as a mini-vacation and find ways to keep yourself busy to distract you from the negative thoughts! You got this, King!
Thank you for sharing. Please keep an open mind that this happened for a reason and in a few months or year when you look back you would see it. Best of luck.
Mikee, keep your head up. Sometimes life has crazy ways of telling us things. We just have to roll with the punches and keep it pushing. You’re so talented. I know you’re going to be okay and everything will work out. Thank you for sharing your life with us ♥️
I lost my job, was unemployed for 9 months while having 100 job interviews, and I earned a ton of new Salesforce certs, then landed my dream job at Salesforce
“Life is happening FOR me” is what I say! Love this approach
Ryan, thank you so much! You guys are providing some of the best advice that I think applies to just life in general and so grateful for the wisdom y'all are sharing. I'm going to take your advice and write down the best case scenarios for myself because so far, it's been all about fear. THANK YOU! 🙏
Love this as well!
When one door closes another door opens. I believe he is meant to do something else.

Perfect. I'd just add though to get your work done fast but make people think it takes longer, then spend that free time building side income streams.
When you lose your job after so long you realise how thin the wire which holds your life together (financially, socially, mentally) is

Another title could have been, “I had my dream job for 18 years.”
what was it?
The company I work for is hiring, it's wfh and flexible. The culture is also really amazing.
Now you move on to the next chapter in your life.
@@krown_royelle9645what is it?
just my notes in case somebody wants to use it:
1. increase growth in my own department.
I’ll tell you more below my comment.
Dear @GeorginaFlows, that is a #spot on comment and encouragement 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻♥️
Have you considered a wfh job the company I work for is hiring
You're so right, I put everything into this company and attached my identity there. Thanks for your insight and glad you came out stronger.
thank you
I’ve been a scientist for 18 years too, everything is becoming automated and I have been procrastinating about taking on extra courses that are of similar discipline like a business analyst. Your video has given me inspiration to go do it!! Feeling uncomfortable is growth. Thank you so much for sharing. You know what to do now, it’s never too late.
This comment alone is reason enough why I decided to put this video out. Thank you for sharing! Good luck with your continued growth in your field!
No reason to for self blame. I'm sure you were an excellent employee. Since your company went out of business, it's not a given that they will give you a severance package, if they can't make payroll. You'll find your way. There are no mistakes. Only growth.
You’re an amazing person. Don’t worry. New doors have opened.

Lost my job in October of 2022 due to surgery, but after resting and regrouping I found my current job in February of 2023; definitely take your time and decide what path would bring you the most joy in life. Sending you lots of positive vibes!
Thank you for sharing and the positive vibes, putting them all in my back pocket ❤️
Hey man, sorry to hear about your team, wishing you all the best as well in this new chapter of your career. Hopefully 2024 got our backs 🙌🏼
Thanks for sharing and wishing you all the best for the new year. Know our worth and here's to taking chances 🫶🏼
Can’t wait to see what’s next for you❤
That's why I always put myself as #1, my business as #2, and any company I work for as #10.
XD
You are amazing! Having the courage to analyze the situation and take responsibility for your part is rare these days.💪🏼
Sorry to hear of the job loss! I’ve been through something similar and while it will take a while to accept the change, you will be better off on the other side. Take some time for yourself first, then when your mind is clear you will find your path. You’ve got this :)
Thanks boys, that currently what I'm leaning into - better days ahead 🫶🏼
Wow. First of all, I appreciate your honesty. I am sorry to hear this news. I found you a couple of months ago and you quickly became one of my favorite channel.
Thank you friend! Yes, definitely bittersweet, appreciate you always!

Hi boys! Thank you! Hopefully we can finally do a meet up this year (after I land back on my feet 😭)
Hey bud.. man I'm sorry to hear.
I'm so sorry for your loss.
May you quicklybe blessed with a new job.🙏🏾
Sorry to hear Mikee. Everything happens when and how it's supposed. There's something really great waiting for you on the end of this.
You’ll be okay. Take it as a blessing. It’s another way the universe telling you that you’re are going to a better path. Take it easy ❤

And keep your head up with you career, we all start somewhere and sometimes even over... like me 😭
Thank you for sharing this, Mikee! I'm very early in my career and this is pure wisdom for me. I wish you all the best!
Where one door closes a better one opens. We’ve been through stuff like this too but we were there for each other and we made it buddy. Good things will come to you because you put good things out there. Blessing to you both. ❤
Hi Pierre - thank you for throwing support my way, super appreciate it 🫶🏼
Best of luck with your next role.
Hey Franklin, thank you and thanks for the reminder of taking the time to figure things out. 🫶🏼
😭🥹🫶🏼 Thanks Joshy!
Dreams can change as people and circumstances do
Stay strong as you are in the beginning of of 5:14 your journey
My life changed 4 times before I settled in twenty five years ago
Embrace change as a challenge and best of luck
Hey Buddy
I found you last week on RUclips.
Hey Treavor, appreciate your insight and words of encouragement so much. Definitely taking notes 🫶🏼
@@MikeeRogers You got this, bestie!
Jordan
I’m so sorry about this, I hope you are able to find another wonderful job
Lots of folks are being laid off. We will survive this.
Sorry to hear about the bad news but you're doing great by your attitude and taking accountability is huge. Hope things chill out !
Hey boo! I know we chatted on IG but I just wanted to say thank you again for the love and support ❤️
Nice video. I’m gonna only add two things:
1) Have an emergency fund.
Rio! ty ty buddy. Really appreciate the encouragement and support 🙌🏼
You can do everything right and still get laid off. It's happened to me 3x in 10 years.
I'm sorry to hear. We bounce back somehow. Best of luck!
You'll be fine. I promise, everything goes exactly the way it supposed to. This will only make u stronger. Stay positive ❤❤.
All the best in your job career. I am sure you will come out of this in a better position!
Your gonna be fine man never give in never give up I’ve been there and done it
I think a lot of us get complacent.
Aww thank you so much... and you're the first to mention reset and I love that. This could quite possible be the biggest reset of my life 🫶🏼
Hey Mikee ....I just found your channel.
I’m sure it will for you too ❤️
Hey man! Didn't know that but glad it worked out for you especially with a job that allows a good work life balance for the kids. That's so clutch 🫶🏼
Hi Emily, thank you! I appreciate you ❤️
Don't be too hard on yourself.
Thanks!
So sweet thank you!
Hi Mikee. So sorry about what you're going through right now. But you got this. Hang in there. ❤🙏
Appreciate you ❤️
Great content. Losing your dream job after 18 years, sorry to hear that, but I must compliment your appearance. You look great, and well preserved.
Thank you and taking notes! Love that your old boss reached out to you, goes to show you're awesome! ❤️
Got laid off 2 weeks ago and it’s been very stressful, I feel you
Sorry to hear but hang in there. It gets better though I'm still figuring things out.
Thank you! "You will also know your limitations" this was powerful, thanks for your insight and sharing that with me!
Thank you for sharing your life with us ♥️
Hey Miranda, thank you for your kind words and encouragement - definitely leaning on pushing forward! 🫶🏼
Such great advice! You're an amazing person.
I lost my job, was unemployed for 9 months while having 100 job interviews, and I earned a ton of new Salesforce certs, then landed my dream job at Salesforce
