Finn, you have to let yourself curate your audience. 87% is not THAT bad of a dislike ratio.
I say start exclusively making content that you're actually interested in, and others who are interested in that will follow eventually. You just have to be patient. Most of your audience, who loves no matter what you put out, will stick around.
The important thing is to let yourself be happy with what you're making. At the end of the day, it's YOUR channel. If you're burned out making material you don't want, then stop doing that! Anyone who doesn't understand that isn't worth your stress anyway. Selfish people will never be satisfied.
If that doesn't work, make another channel where you upload stuff that you're actually interested in, and occasionally keep posting to this one. Whatever you want, buddy. Personally, I'm here for the ride, whatever your endeavor is.

    - past musicians that would be canceled by today standards

I also think you do a great job of the yin and yang with the more fact based stuff on this channel, and the more fun off the wall stuff on your personal. Try and remember to give yourself a pat on the back for how far you've come every once in a while. Love your content! Whatever you do I'm sure it'll be succesful. Personally, I love learning new stuff about the bands I love when you talk about them. I’ve always liked hearing you point out the influences of older bands on newer bands. For example, I hadn’t noticed how much a lot of modern metal seems to take from Linkin Park, but when you pointed it out it made a lot of sense. Maybe you could try doing a video series on pointing those similarities out to bridge the gap between nostalgia and new bands and maybe drive attention to newer music

Finn you clearly love to make videos, researching all of the stuff and putting yourself into it, it would be painful to do that for something you don't like... that is pretty sure brother. Hope you'll figure out and till that time i will keep watching and liking :D

    • @Silber-Kaninchen
      @Silber-Kaninchen 7 месяцев назад +5

Pretty much this. When your passion becomes your job, you end up depending on everything around it (in this case viewers for example) and start hating what you used to love, because you wrap it up with what you still do, which is not what you love at all. And cue the anxiety and existential dread. I can't imagine doing this publicly on top of that, where if you stay the same people will start whining that you're not original enough, and if you change you'll get the "it used to be better" comments. If you can afford it, I would recommend a very long break, figure out what else you could do to support your family that wouldn't destroy your well being, and come back, if you want to, on your own terms. Also you'd probably end up with less followers, but more in tune with the content you want to make.

Finn, as a product of the 90’s and 00’s, your first couple years of videos almost single-handedly got me into so many incredible bands - everything from ADTR to Waterparks to BMTH. I was lured in by the “what killed the genre” series and stuck around because I got educated on everything I had missed in my college and adult years. I miss learning about new music from you and getting your take on what’s going on in the rock music space.

Finn, the main reason I watch you is because I respect your opinion and insights of the music industry; especially from a marketing perspective.
I dunno if this idea sounds interesting to you, but surely you have a lot of music creators in your audience (especially in Rock and Metal); maybe you could discuss what other artists are doing (in any genre) to gain attention and present it in a way where other artists could apply it to their music.
I'm not saying you have to go full teacher mode, but maybe if your content had "applicable education", it could be appreciated no matter what genre you're talking about.
Lastly, I recently learned that "negative" engagement is still "engagement", and I think the algorithm still rewards it. If you can afford to make what you wanna make for a short period of time, and endure the haters, maybe in the long run, the haters will leave and you'll be left with a more loyal and supportive audience.
    I'm with you!

    • @kenosabi

  • @Trepanation21
    @Trepanation21 7 месяцев назад

Thanks for what you do, Finn. I like your channel a lot and peep it regularly. While I recognize that a fair share of the videos haven't necessarily been things that I'm specifically interested in, I still love the channel(s) and your style -- That means, *I like your personality, and the things you're interested in.*
As such, *I'm a fan as long as you're enjoying yourself.* As it's 'a music channel', sharing music that you're enjoying and interested in (REGARDLESS of genre) will always be a draw for people like me, because I myself am always spending time checking out new (to me) artists and intentionally spending time in different genres... because I love music! Also, you're the Punk Rock MBA, it's pretty punk to do whatever the fuck you want, tbh.
For you, that could mean not just sharing but discussing more of what you find interesting about whatever you're listening to or spending time with, whether that's a personal connection and/or technical/production point. This lets *_you_* be your channel a bit more, so maybe you don't feel so dry and soulless, because you can offer more of your thoughts and insights about things you're actively into, and [re]build your community around that. Those of us who enjoy you for your vibe will eat that up. You can maybe involve some content relating to shows that you're able to make it out to, what some scenes are like, industry interviews as possible (that don't just have to be band members themselves, but tech and production crews are cool too, IMO). Idk, I just like lots of good music bro, wherever we find it!
I don't know if my suggestions translate well into meaningful content production, but regardless, I hope you can ease into content that you enjoy, and have a better community where you're BOTH enjoying the journey. 🖤🙏

Hey Finn, firstly I think it's great that you're so open about all this. Burnout is real and having the pressure of supporting a young family is difficult. You're right, when there is livelihood at stake, you can't always follow your passion 100% of the time and a lot of people who aren't under pressure don't understand this. This sucks and you're not alone in this position.
I tune into your videos because I like your style, not because of the topic, but maybe for the masses you can find a balance "one for you, one for them" kind of thing. As for topics, maybe some topics that would resonate with your audience would be:
    - how bands make money on tour and how it's different from the 90s/early 00s
    - deep-dive videos on 80s alternative bands that influenced 90s/00s bands
    - interesting takes on alternative music in different media (movies, video games, etc.)
    - how marketing shaped music in the 90s and how it's different today
    - submissions from viewers redesigning band logos and then rank them
    - interviews with music industry people
I'm sorry to see you struggling. Your family is the most important thing, so do what you need to do, man. Thanks again for being yourself!

Finn, one of my favorite things the channel (that you are doing less often) is your technical musical analysis for laymen. You are so good at picking apart what is similar/different between different styles of music, and contrasting how they use different tools for similar effect. I'd love to see "Finns guides to genre X". Also, with your channel growing like it is, I'm sure many viewers might not know enough about the technical side music to follow some of your analysis.
Basics guides might also be a great thing to have, for example; what makes someone good at a particular instrument, song structure basics, what is groove vs. virtuosity, etc. etc. You have a gift for that sort of thing, and even after decades of being a massive music enthusiast you regularly change my perspective and understanding of the technical side of music.
On a personal note, thanks for educating me on punk and hardcore. I was lucky enough to come of age in a place where I could go to shows of multiple generas of music most nights of the week, and I took full advantage. I made a habit of watching every kind of music in every scene I could get myself into. I was always more than happy to go to NY hardcore shows in the 90's because the shows were amazing (and cheep) even if the music rarely hit for me. Your knowledge and passion helped me understand and appreciative the shows I did get to. Thank you for making so many connections for me and giving me the context to more fully appreciate so much of the music I love, especially for music OUTSIDE of your focus on metal.
I hope your feeling better and that the comments on this video help you find a little bit of direction.

Being a small business owner and a hobbyist is not easy. Especially when there comes a time when you realize that work and passions do have some sort of separation, even if you believe that what you do for work is your passion, it does not always remain that way.
I would say, make a brand new channel that only supports the content that you personally enjoy doing and want to do. Keep the other channels, strictly for work. You can’t lose. It’s just a time sacrifice for your personal stuff, which sucks, but it’s the best way!

I'm in my early 40's and thought that my musical exploration had pretty much come to a halt. Stuck in my ways hardcore, punk, and metalish dude. But you have had an influence on how I view music, the whole music industry, what music I listen to (new and older), and various things about life in general. You are passionate, interesting, humorous, and relatable. I originally stumbled onto to your channel expecting just the usual facts and incite on music and ended up getting a whole lot more. So grateful for this channel. My favorite videos are the ones you said are less popular - your takes on new genres, but also things related to your own history with hardcore punk (including you last video on it). I'd love to see more videos of you telling stories from your time in the DIY punk scene that elicit deeper life lessons and reflections that are more than just critiques of the limitations of the subculture too. Maybe a frame around a particular band, but bring in your personal stories.

Hey man, this is the only comment I’ve ever left on a video. Been watching for a couple of years now and enjoy both channels.
As someone who’s in advertising also (digital marketing for ~10 years now), I would find it fascinating to understand more how and why bands are marketed the way they are. Learning a bit about why record companies have pushed certain bands and not others, and how personalities of band members influence those campaigns, seems really interesting.
For your creative inspiration if time permits you should definitely get a third channel going on these other topics you want to generate a new audience for. I’m sure you’ve thought about this before but you sound like you are getting burned out and need a change. Maybe this video is the sign you’ve been looking for.
Appreciate all that you’ve done in the past. It’s been very entertaining and insightful.

Some of my favorite topics you’ve discussed are the ones adjacent to music and focused on the scene’s culture.
It would be fun to see videos relating your other specialties (business/marketing/branding) to millennials who grew up and want to start a music adjacent business or a band. Would seem to fit with the channel name.

Fin, definitely a vulnerable moment . You may feel like you have plateaued when it comes to content creation. I think switching gears could benefit you . Think back to 90s nostalgia. What’s something that always caught the attention of the masses. Shows like “ making the band “ are due for a reboot. You could possibly ask local bands for submissions, share them on your channel, go to a live show and film it “ reality tv “ style . Interview the bands , share back stories and help them with what they may lack ? Branding opportunities, sound recordings or just using your audience to capture attention?
Could be a useful tool to discover new underground music . Help you get the ideas flowing again .
Be watching since 2018 and I’ve also noticed the episodes are missing that spark. You are going through the motions to make content because it’s your main income vs doing it because you just loved it . Much love from Pennsylvania 🤙🏻 keep your head up

This actually sounds like a great idea. Kind of back to your roots kind of thing, but with modern music. As a millennial I also don't really know anything about the "scene" nowadays ie. I'm old enough that what kids do and are interested in is foreign and scary to me. Some content about that could be very interesting if done right.

seriously, i kinda stopped watching the videos on his main channel because i can actually tell his heart's not really in it and he often complains that he's remaking the same video over and over. but i watch his 2nd channel all the time because Finn's personality is entertaining and he's speaking freely off the cuff about personal topics inbetween "topical topics" since it's almost all cuts from his livestreams.
it kinda makes me sad that he feels the need to sanitize himself from his main videos but i think that it hurts him shows he is a human being. Mr Beast (who i just dont watch i have no strong opinions about, his content doesnt interest me) gave a interview recently where he alluded to the fact that his videos were successful because he had eliminated as much of his own personality as possible from his vdeos.
some people are built different though, Finn is snarky but i can tell he's a very sensitive person. i'm oversensitive and i often get acidic to hide that fact about me. i don't get that same vibe from Mr Jimmy, which makes him unrelatable to me.

    Some ideas:
    - you are (to my knowledge) the only creator who knows and talks about the “scene”. Your updated perspective on how you have overcome a lot of that stuff is truly inspirational and I think would help a lot of people.
    - reformed “emos” is your niche! A lot of 30 somethings who used to mosh and crowd surf now work corporate jobs and live simpler lives. However, that wild, aggressive part of them still exists somewhere. Maybe there’s a way you could tap into that?I find your matured but funny take on life so refreshing. Nostalgia vids and commentary are amazing from you.

I agree. I loved the video about “where emo kids are now” or whatever it was called. I’d love more about that kind of thing. Recognise the roots and nostalgia but being real about the fact we’re getting older and have boring adult shit to do lol. Like as a 37 year old woman who was into nu metal back in the day, I really wanna know what other nu metal era women are wearing these days. I definitely had a decade where I went normie but now I’m rediscovering my alt roots and wanting to bring that back into my style a bit. But so much of the content out there is 20-year-olds showing their e-girl aesthetic or just recreating the nu metal look copypasta. I wanna know what grown ass alt women are wearing as they live their real lives not just being cute for TikTok or whatever. It would be cool to collaborate with some female creators to talk a bit about what reformed emos wear in their 30s and 40s

Sounds like you are suffering from "audience capture". Your subscriber base has a strong influence over what you create for them, as opposed to creating for yourself. This can be positive if your values align but clearly you seem frustrated by a lack of interest in the content you want to make. This is a cycle that can be broken if you choose to create the content you want, you will then be growing an audience for that. It may be difficult to make that transition but the outcome is a better alignment between yourself and your audience. Personally speaking, I've enjoyed your content that introduced me to new music more than the 90s/00s metal/alternative retrospects. I hope you can figure out which direction you want to take going forward :-)

I started writing the same comment as @xisumavoid, so moving here - audience capture is a suck, but also is (IMO) a part of the growing pains in being a micro-celebrity and doing large scale public work. The name of the channel is your aesthetic, not your chains.
I'm very much your elder-millenial listens to nu-metal still pretty often and enjoys your deep dives into the history of bands I had forgotten I liked, but man, I do feel like I don't find so much new and interesting bands nowdays. Finding ways to take "hey you liked x, y, z - it's likely you'd like a, b, c - and here's what they've been doing which is new" is a super compelling watch in a world where algorithms are making most of your recommendations, and they can't be introspected or interrogated

First off I really appreciate you taking such a brave step to be mentally transparent and vulnerable.
As far as your question about "what you should do" I think you first need to answer the question of what do you like then work backwards from there to try and make it something your audience is into. Im not a content creator but I do think that your true community are the people who are down for all the experiments you try because they're into this channel because of you not just the history.
Fantano's channel is an interesting case study with this. He makes a lot of different type of videos(on two separate channels) not just reviews and his audience for the most part is along for the ride. Although most of it is music related which leads me to the other point.
How to solve the "I want to make videos on other things im interested in" issue is to maybe make more channels for those topics.
You have business/investment video ideas start a channel for that (call it PRMBA-GrowUp or something), wanna do something with movies or games make PRMBA-NowInColor or something.
But you should only do these videos (and make these channels) if you have a lot to say about these topics not just to diversify the content.

Maybe a video series based on the years? Do 4 vids on like 1985, one on country, one on metal, one on rock, one on pop, and continue doing those to the present day exploring the evolution of the genres and how sounds and styles progressed, you can weave newer artists throughout it by highlighting artists influenced by those that came before (like how emo rapper sample a lot of that stuff or how even Halsey has sampled bands like Brand New)
It might not do well exactly, but I'd also love some videos on how promotion has changed over the years from DIY posters to street teams, all the way through tiktok and you can talk about new artists that way too. Who is still using promotional tactics from 30 years ago and making them work?
Maybe include media reviews? I'm talking about more books than films and documentaries. I just read From the Basement and found it mediocre overall, but I know there are other authors in the scene. Keith Buckley has a few books out, Geoff Rickley, Joe Trohman
Last idea... (maybe risky?) Rebrand, you would know more about that than most of us for sure, but if I saw someone with the name ThePunkRockMBA and they made a video on jazz or country, I'd just assume they were shitting on the genres before I even turned it on. Maybe switch to TheMusicMBA? I think part of what made Fantano able to do what he does is that his name is inclusive to all music.

@@ThePunkRockMBA I think there's a way to do it. I follow crypto channels (i know i know) but like bitboy crypto rebranded their entire channel to discover crypto, name change and all. After Jason Tate got the rights back to absolute punk he switched it over to chorus because punk no longer represented the entirety of what he did. I have no doubt you can pull off the samd

Here’s an idea. Make a video about songs that became more iconic and famous because they were in films. Directors like Quentin Tarantino put some of the best soundtracks in his films, and those soundtracks became more iconic because they were submitted in perfectly in his film. You don’t have to like the directors, but the style of how music can change your perspective in a film is interesting. 🎬🎶🎵🗣️

I like this idea. There was the video about the relationship between pop punk and teen movies which was really cool. I’d love to see one about maybe how other genres have been featured in movies (like the resident evil movies and the matrix and that kind of genre movie) or just music in movies in general

This is just my one subscriber’s opinion but my favorite vids of urs are the ones that are further out of the traditional metal stuff (like trap metal and Hyperpop) those are the vids I always come back to and I’ve even shared with people. So I get the algorithm may favor other things but you’ll always have at least one view on those vids from me. Also as an autistic person with a creative type brain the way u come off has never been off putting to me at least

Honestly, I'm not as interested in metal/music commentary as I used to be. I always come back to your videos (particularly your second channel/twitch streams) because you've brought more of your personality and perspectives into it.
I really enjoy hearing you talk about "lifey" things. You have a lot to say that I think is incredibly valuable, especially in this day and age. I appreciate your willingness to put yourself out there and share your views honestly, it's very refreshing.

The sad truth is every RUclipsr who struggles deals with this, but they are afraid to be completely honest with their fanbase because they know they can never win the fight. So I respect you for being completely honest.. 💙
this is why a lot of RUclipsrs have to create a character for themselves on RUclips to become funny or amusing. When in reality that’s not who they are in real life. And they struggle every week on what things they should say when they are in their RUclips character again. I can’t imagine how mentally that must strain you. 😫
The public people will always control the public figures as a puppet to play with and it’s so messed up. 😞

    Finn,
First off, I want to say that me and my wife watch your youtube and love it. Our tastes go from big band in the 1940's, oldies in 50 and 60's then goes to hardcore and metal. We like ( and appreciate) your views on music of today. I think its really hard for you to do videos on punk and metal. To be honest, the new metal bands are not that good and most punk is pop punk. Also, im sure that most of the people that are talking smack on here are about 12 or dont realize the time and effort it takes uou to take this on. Well in any case i wanted to let you know that there are people who respect and appreciate you.

You said you were going to read the comments. So I'm going to take advantage and give you my perspective.
First of all, I'm from Argentina, and while I understand English, I'm not very good at writing it. This message is translated by Google, therefore, it may have some writing problems.
1- Difference between the two channels, the personal and Punk Rock MBA.
Personally, I like the Punk Rock MBA channel better: the videos have more production and the content is better structured, characteristics that the videos on the other channel do not have.
The name of the Channel, Punk Rock MBA, was the first thing that caught my attention, and I think where the first videos were directed.
The objective was to analyze and structure the way in which bands operate or how, in business terms, they serve their target audience, and they achieve it. It seemed like an excellent idea to me. For music NERDS, who don't want short videos, but want information about the bands and a different perspective, and the best thing I had was your opinion, which I always validate.
I think the idea of the Channel, referenced as MBA, is very good and interesting, it stood out among all the other content there is.
Your informative videos are 10 or more minutes long, therefore, your target audience is over 30 years old, consequently, it seems to me that I should attack it.
I like data and information. How the albums were recorded, who was the producer, what did he mean in certain songs, what mood existed at the time of recording the album, meaning of songs, etc.
    2- Importance of your opinion.
It always seemed fundamental to me, in every channel, that the author's opinion on the topic he deals with is what makes it particular and different. Your opinions make you think.
    3- Content proposal.
I find it interesting that you can recommend bands and give solid points as to why you think we should listen to them.
Today music is a commodity, all the songs sound the same and there are so many artists, it is difficult to distinguish which ones are worth it. I believe that today, the only thing that can make a difference is going to see them play live or, in your case, having them recommend you... and not songs! Albums worth it.
On the other hand, although - as you said - there in videos you make a summary of what Wikipedia says - for my part I did not know it - for me they are interesting and even more so when you add your opinion.
You could also give your opinion about the festivals or concerts that are taking place.
    4- Interviews.
The interviews you did seem great to me! I always enjoyed them a lot.
    5- Consultations on social networks.
Propose topics for people to vote on and choose topics for you to make videos on.
    6- I don't like.
First and foremost, that you give so much importance to the haters. I understand that the number of views is important, but comments are useless when they are hateful. Focus on those who help you.
I also don't like the videos when you are streaming, they don't entertain me.
    Hope this can help you!

Here is a bit of advice from someone who struggles with anxiety and PTSD (I hope it helps at least a little): make peace with the worst possible outcome of your situation. If you make peace with that, it allows you to do whatever that thing is more freely (ie make internet content). There is also Pascal's wager - if you keep making videos people will make negative comments. If you stop, people will find old videos and make negative comments. So, keep making new videos. Lastly, as the greatest emo band ever (Copeland) said - dont break your neck to keep your chin up.

it's so funny cuz im millennial. i grew up with all sorts of pop punk-ish artists or whatever (i guess like senses fail etc) and i discovered gothboiclique in 2015 (about a year before lil peep was even a thing or at least before anyone heard of him). it blew my mind. the sound was so amazing to me and so new and i had no idea what this kind of music was even called. it was like the team sesh or raider klan stuff i was listening to for 2 years previous except with emo-influenced clean vocals and it worked so well i couldn't believe it hasn't been done before. i drove the 4 hours to go to a show they had in LA around january the next year: only about 50 or 60 people were there but i was still so starstruck meeting horse head and cold hart. i instantly told horse head "i listen to your romantic EP every day"

First off you're super great. Your content kicks ass and your little one is adorable (new dad gang).
Secondly it might be unrealistic as time is so finite especially with a little one at home... but can you maybe add an extra video a month? Like a passion video? Or add extra content that you love on top of what is effective for viewership etc?
Regardless sending super good vibes Finn you're amazing and pay homage to art that has touched so many of us. I'd also say your older stuff had a lot of personal connection that gave you insights people can't find on Wikipedia. That was so cool for me. But I recognized there is a finite amount of experiences for you to draw of from your life. But keep it up dude I love all of it.

Hey Finn, I just want to say I hear you and can relate. Several years ago, I had to take a step back from my work as a music director due to panic attacks and even seizures caused by the constant stress and criticism. There were several points where I wanted to end my life. I think being under a public microscope is about as unnatural as it gets in the human experience. It got to a level for me where I had to back off, resign from my position, and restructure life. I make less money, I’m not an influencer, and my music isn’t blowing up. However, my wife and I have been together for 11 years, we have a house, we our needs met, we’re slowly taking things in a new direction, and we’re enjoying life much more than when I was under constant pressure with never-ending negative feedback loops. I am not saying you need to step back like I did, and I’m not even giving advice here. I am not as experienced as you, and I’m definitely not as business savvy. (I’m probably grouped in with the “creative people” who are typically assholes to you.) I just want to say, you’ve got your priorities straight, you’re smart, and you’ll figure this chapter out, just like you’ve done before. I’m an F-Tier Nobody/Baddiecore Wannabe, but honestly, I’m here for it because I’m not suffocating anymore. You got this, dude.
