It's funny having grown up in New York after 9/11 because we had like a 5-10 year period where the rest of the country didn't hate us but I didn't realize that was not the norm. Whenever you go to some really quaint rural place and have a nice chat with a local it's always fun when you get to the point of the conversation where they ask where you're from because when you say New York City they look at you like you said "I was raised in Gomorrah but now I live in Sodom"

I currently live in Rapid City, and while much of South Dakota is basically a wasteland, the Black Hills/Badlands region is beautiful and cost of living is still pretty affordable. Also, there's no state income tax, driving is a breeze for most of the year since there's usually not too much traffic hassle, humidity is lower West River, and Midwestern nice is a thing. But I will admit crime is a problem in areas of the state, especially the Indian reservations and parts of Rapid City. Pay often isn't as good due to less available good jobs outside of Rapid City and Sioux Falls, cost of living has been increasing in Sioux Falls and the Hills, and Black Hills hailstorms are nightmare fuel. I'd put the state about in the middle. If you must go anywhere in the state, go to Sioux Falls or the Hills/Badlands area.

Yeah… it’s a shame, SF used to be one of my favorite cities in the world. Shame to see what it’s become in the last 10 years (or more). Also, the lack of housing and ridiculous price of living make Cali not an S to me either. I might put it in B. Nevada City, Ca where I live, is one of the coolest towns I’ve ever been though.

I live in eastern Washington. One of my first jobs was as a delivery driver. In one day, I would experience desert, snow, rain, 80 degree weather, heavy fog, rolling hills, ancient waterfalls and flood plains, and world famous Mt Rainer off in the distance. I’ve lived here all my life but I couldn’t believe how cool it was. Then I realized, I have hardly been to the famous western region of the state. The politics are annoying as hell but the scenery here is unlike anywhere on Earth.

Finn please come to the Tampa Bay Area! You’ll hate Orlando if you visit the gulf coast of Florida. Traffic is much better and we have Busch Gardens which is way more affordable and less crowded than Disney. Also the panhandle is absolutely beautiful if you just want to sit on a beach, eat oysters, and get away from it all. Unfortunately you are correct about the prices. St Pete is my hometown and I can’t believe how expensive and over developed it’s gotten here. The Californians and New Yorkers keep bidding up all the houses and condos to where the locals can’t afford it anymore.

California when making average wages in the urban areas sucks. All of the cost of living and congestion subtracts heavily from the weather and amenities. That said, the best of California is outside of the metros. Sequoias, Redwoods, Mt Shasta, Lost Coast, Sierras is peak and prime California. So if you can work remotely and live near excellent places, CA is prime.
Oregon has the advantage of being less populated and cheaper than CA and WA. The provincial attitude is very disappointing.
Extra points for Crater Lake, the coast, and the Blue Mountains.

Edit: just got to the Florida part, you have to go to key west if you want to see something truly amazing but it is overpriced. I’d rather live here than anywhere else though despite the price. Broward county, Naples, some areas near Tampa and also the springs are nice too!!

Dude your obviously highly biased putting California at S tier and NY on F tier. I know list are subjective but Yes both states have big issues but also have alot of factual greatness that puts them in the top tiers but not S tier. Unfortunately their extremely scandalously high cost of living and taxes while being managed by highly inept government officials and crime puts them out of S tier because the problems they have are mostly self inflicted. But without both of them the country isn't as prosperous. S tier is: Vermont, New Hampshire and Minnesota. A tier is: Washington, Idaho, Massachusetts, Maryland and Utah. B tier is: Connecticut, Maine, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Delaware, Virginia, Colorado, Nebraska, The Dakotas, Iowa, Wyoming, California, New York and Wisconsin. C tier is: Texas, Florida, Alsaka, Illinois, Georgia, New Jersey, North Carolina, Oregon, Hawaii, Arizona, Nevada, Missouri, Montana, Ohio and Michigan, D tier is: West Virginia, Tennessee, Kansas, and Kentucky and F tier is: Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, Indiana, New Mexico and Arkansas. A lot more factual, my only bias is Massachusetts and Rhode Island as I grew up there but those states are on alot of top 10 or 20 list. Served 8 years in the Army as a 88 mike and seen and been in every state ✌🏽❤️ 🇺🇲

Net migration out of those west coast states (and into places like Tx, Fla, and the deep south) over the last 3 years is staggering. South Dakota never locked you down during Covid, and in ND (lived in the Fargo area) you can still buy a 30 round mag and an AR on the same day. West Virginia is beautiful, affordable, and has a low crime rate despite the poverty. Should just rank cities instead of basing the value of the state on whether or not it has good cities and "culture." After all, the latter is in the eye of the beholder. Fwiw, I've lived in 5 of the states on his tier list, including both "S" tier states. My family is from Cali (Bay area, but I've lived in SoCal too.) Lived in the Tacoma area as well. Enjoyed my time in Ky. Agree about down state NJ being nice, disagree about upstate NY. I really love west coast states outside the cities, but wouldn't live there anymore. My current state, CO, is going the same route for the same reasons. Buccees > every other gas station ever. Will be fun to watch Finn's perspective change as his kid gets older. Mine certainly did. I would be remiss if I didn't mention that those awful flyover states that Finn doesn't like are indeed full, and you should all stay away.

If I could live anywhere in the US, Southern California would still be one of the last places I’d choose. California has some great places, but that urban sprawl and lack of seasons alone is a huge turnoff. I need somewhere with 4 seasons. I’d be looking at Vermont, Maine, somewhere in rural New England, or somewhere in the Rockies or Sierras
