Homeschooling, homesteading mama to nine here... go SLOW ladies. ❤ We took on too much too quickly. It got overwhelming and we almost got burned out. When you have little ones, use up those small pockets of time or when children are sleeping. When they are awake and need your attention, you will get frustrated if you’re trying to concentrate on a project/new skill and you keep getting interrupted. When you get something mastered, then you can include them some and teach them. Great video (as always) Kelli! This generation needs these types of channels more than ever now. I love seeing families going “back to the old ways” like the Scriptures day and you don’t have to be Amish to do it! Many blessings! Love, Kelli (TN)

Great advice. We are a few years into homesteading and have little children. I'm currently 32 weeks pregnant as well. 😅 We just got finished with all of the livestock births on the farm and the last 2 weeks have been exhausting. I'm glad we took a few years to ease into it because it would have been too much if we did it all at once.

Yes! One thing at a time.
15 years ago, when I was first married, I got the canned biscuits not realizing you can make them. 😅 Husband actually showed me how and it flipped a switch where I would ask "now what, what else can I learn to make?" and now 95 percent of what we eat is from scratch, canned, fermented, etc. I didn't do that overnight; it's been a 15 year process and I'm still learning new things. It's such a joy to discover and learn new skills!
    Beautiful apron. ❤

Kelli, I was so honored that you chose to use my comment in your video. I mean all that I said, with all of my heart. MY life is so much richer now that I have these younger ladies coming for help. I DO take the time to teach my own daughters this stuff, but a lot of times they act like it something they are being forced to do under duress🤣.. ... So to have some one seek you, & all of your skills, knowledge, & love, out is really special. Older ladies! Don't wait for someone to reach out to you, crumpling under stress. Be the hand that reaches first. With my lovely new neighbor, I just txted her & said, 'Would like to learn how to roast a chicken? If so, come over at 3 & I will show you how & I will send you home with one to do yourself." (cuz I had made one for her upon the arrival of her new baby so she didn't have to cook for a couple days home from the hospital). From that point on, every time I was doing something homemaking-ish, I would txt her & say, "Do you want to learn how to make laundry soap. That is my chore for the day, come over if you're interested". Usually the whole family shows up! & we LOVE it. I have been doing this with a few other new friends (even older ladies that missed learning certain skills). They all keep telling me to start a class or get a youtube channel, but I am too busy😅. Don't WAIT around for others to want to know you - offer the gift of yourself & your time. It builds community & passes on skills that are quickly being lost.

@@SMach-tc9ep I want to share that my outlook was not always set right. I had to go thru a ton of suffering, isolation, loneliness, & despair to get to this point. When I was a younger wife (early 2000s) there was NO ONE doing any of this stuff. I had no one around (other than my husband) to encourage me. I was the only sahm in my area (pretty rural CNY). So I filled my time with volunteering at my kids' school. I learned things along the way, like gardening & canning. But it wasn't a full time occupation like it is now. Once we pulled our kids out of school, my social life dried up completely. We still did many things with other homeschooling families, but I am an anomaly .... a Catholic homeschooler, that didn't do so based on religious beliefs. this left us being very much outsiders. & no one else ever seemed to think what I was doing was normal - lots of snarky attitudes about our life. So I had gotten to the point where I had completely been cut off from friendship, except for one friend/neighbor that (I thought) lived very similar to us. She left her husband out of the blue & I never heard from her again. I found out that she had had a whole secret life, that didn't match who she was presenting herself as. It seemed like all the joy was sucked out of my life, other than my hubby & kids. I literally prayed, HARD, for about the past 5 years to have a friend .... one that would be interested in the things I do & that I could work with on projects, just like that other friend (minus the cheating, lying, part etc...😆) I had kind of given up on that prayer...And then my new neighbor moved in and wants to know everything! One day I was standing in my yard looking at her house - right next door - and I felt God's presence through me & I 'heard' (but not like a voice) "this is the answer to your prayer". It was no thought of my own. I pray that you have someone in your life that encourages you & shares all of their knowledge. 🥰

Christian Wife and mother of 9 children here, who didn't get saved until I was 18 and pregnant with my first child, and didn't know anything about homemaking... yes! This is so true, one baby step at a time! I didn't even know how to change a diaper when i started, let alone cook from scratch etc! 19 years later i can say the Lord has helped me learn so many skills, baby steps by baby step! I wish i would have had your wisdom decades ago and I'm thankful you're teaching ladies. There are still a lot of things i don't do from scratch and we don't live in a home where true homesteading is viable, but that's why it's ok for each family to be different! Keep doing what you're doing and stay close to the Lord and His Word, and He will bless the works of your hands.❤

Since 2018, I have been teaching myself to do a variety of domestic skills I was never taught at home.
The scariest skills were pressure cooking. I got an insta pot. I couldn't believe how easy and SAFE it was. Then I moved to pressure canning. I started easy with water. Yes! Can water first. Two reasons.
    1) If you mess up and don't have a seal. No problem! It's water.
    2) You learn the process. Again, with water, you don't have a huge loss if there is no seal.
From there, I returned to dehydrating. Last year, I tackled sewing.
Failure: I failed at planying potatoes. What did I learn? Keep an eye on them, or bugs will move in. Yeah! 😢 I wasn't aware of this problem. Until our little Pomeranian made it clear there was a problem. 😅😂 God blessed us with Sarge.

This is a great video! I'm a homeschooling, homemaking mama of 4, 2 of those 4 are adults now. The first apron I made, I just used an apron I had as a template. It turned out great! It was an apron for one of my daughters for Christmas. Also, I watch a Mennonite mama on RUclips and she makes some of her dresses by using a dress she currently has as a pattern. You did a fabulous job btw. Also, I agree on learning these skills. It's applying layers over the years for sure.🌷 Your apron turned out lovely! I'm glad you had so much fun making it.💐

I do a lot of handcrafts and people ask me all the time how I do them all. My short answer is "I don't". I don't weave, spin, knit, bake bread, make soap, work with leather, and garden and do all those things at once. I do what I need, and learn them as I need them. Most of them take years. You can focus on one thing or a few things, or just do what you need when you need it. And you should enjoy the process. Have fun with it, make it an adventure/

Great video! I tend to jump in off the deep end. It has been hard to go slow but my chances of succeeding are much higher if I put the brakes on. A friend of mine has a grain mill and she let me borrow it for a few days so I got some hard white wheat and made a couple of loaves of bread. It went great and I decided I wanted to get my own mill. But then I thought that to get the full nutrition value out of the bread, I should be sprouting the wheat first. Thankfully the Lord showed me that I needed to slow down and just start with milling the wheat berries. One step at a time and it’s a marathon, not a sprint!

I do struggle with my gardening skills and grow frustrated but, after the drought we suffered in Texas last year and the abysmal efforts of my garden, I was overjoyed at the herbs that retained and grew even stronger.
    I should follow that lead.
