  • Big Antique Mall in a Little Town! I Vintage Reselling
    We held this one back until closer (2 weeks) to reopening! Twin Lakes Antique Mall in Gilbertsville, Kentucky is a giant emporium of 170 dealers by the Land Between the Lakes national recreation area, where social distancing is easy and great antique and vintage collectibles await visitors.
    With 170 dealers, we only scratch the surface of the vast variety on display. Early Fenton carnival water sets and wonderfully priced porch wicker vie for attention with tools, truly antique primitives and vibrant vintage textiles. A booth full of Fiesta and cases with railroadiana, Capodimonte and Christmas collectibles delight the eye.
    Will the wheel of fortune shine down upon us? We trust our luck to find fun things for resale, from a sweet hibiscus girl and fab 50s flamingoes to Haeger musicians and a Jim and Tammy record. This is my only midwest location, so we visit my space briefly and talk about my upcoming expansion (we’ll see more in my next video).
    For the stately home, a Roseville pedestal jardiniere, a fantastically painted flour sifter and a sink with Wedgwood handles are standouts. We spend time interpreting what we see (and hear, in the case of a possessed vintage child’s toy!).
    A detailed list of items follows below…
    I hope my review of this massive antique mall helps you learn more about antique and vintage items, inspires interest in more realms of collecting and informs resellers about vintage items of value! I’m happy to be sharing my real world vintage encounters with the online community, I love sharing our passion and hope we will all help each other with our antique education.
    Here’s a list of other items we discover more about in this video:
    Carnival glass, Lladro, Gone With the Wind lamp, Pepsi thermometer, advertising, oak drawer cabinet, records, quilts and coverlets, hotel washstand, rolling bread rack, one man band, swim fins, Ertl tractor, cat s&p, tiger planter, See-and-Say, butcher scale, Stanford corn ware, soda counter dispenser, Keebler elves, soybean license plate, oil cans, Arabia pitcher, canning jars, mystery jars, buggy seat, Sebastian miniatures, indian baskets, Treasure Craft Barrel line, Blendo glass, Penguin deco ice bucket, etc.

    I loved this tour! The oil cans are so familiar to me. My granddaddy worked for the Gulf Oil refinery in Port Arthur, Texas. And then moved to the Gulf Chemical Plant in Baytown, Texas in the 1960’s to make polypropylene plastic until he retired. My dad worked for Texaco Research on the site of the original TEXAS Oil Refinery, now Motiva. It is built across the highway from the Gulf plant, which became Chevron.

    Thanks George, another great episode. I really enjoy your videos, my favourite antiques channel! Your knowledge is amazing, and you always have so much interesting information to tell. What a surprise to see Arabia's pitcher for sale in Kentucky, and what a bargain, price tag only $ 59.00! Here in Finland this biggest blue design picher (which is the rarest colour & most valuable) would quite easily sell around € 180.00-220.00 in vintage/antique shops. By the way, it's not a bull, it's a cow ;-) This pitcher is called "Heluna", which was a very common name to give for a cow. Designed by Anja Juurikkala, and it was in production between 1954-66. It was made in four different sizes: 0.5, 1, 1.5 & 2 litres, and in four different colours: yellow, brown, green and blue.

    • @TheAntiqueNomad
      @TheAntiqueNomad  4 года назад +1

      Heluna! Thank you for that, we've always wondered over here. I don't know why I said bull, lots of people pointed out the udders. I love Finnish design and especially Arabia. A friend of mine in Michigan is related to Alvar Aalto and collects his designs.

    New subscriber. Loved looking at your booth. I like your intro and the fact that you said fair well and then went into the press the button thing, gives us the option of ducking out early (and we are watching). You looked good and sounded good. Any added sounds or music blended in perfectly. Try to have all your cabinetry the same. We found Billy cabinets from Ikea inexpensive and easy to add to. Uniformity helps people to see the product. It looks very tidy for those who have trouble with casual. You could hang some vintage reproduce on the wall to decorate as well. Your booth looked cheery! Everything was laid out very nice on the shelves. I love vintage things that are fun and make me happy! Look forward to seeing more. Love all the info.🇨🇦💗🇺🇸

      Just keep in mind the (old) Fiesta ware contains lead not recommended to use it for every day use more of a show piece. The pieces from the 1990's do not contain lead. I received two full sets as a wedding gift in 1992, and I am still using the turquoise set each and every day.

    That was a fantastic tour!!! I all but gave up on the chat -- was attempting to crawl through the monitor, and get in there 🤣🤣 I kept noticing a tankard over your head, on top of one of the shelves, that, from a distance, looked like IOGA Warwick. I couldn't really tell for sure, from the distance, but it looked interesting. A lot of nice Carnival Glass there! The Fenton "Butterfly and Fern" is one pattern I'm not all that crazy about, though. Most all of the patterns that have butterflies in them, the butterflies always look "cookie-cutter", to me 😐 Northwood's "Springtime" is an exception to that, though, for me.
    I really like the three pieces I got from you!!! I mean REALLY like them!!! That highchair figurine is FANTASTIC!!! The details are over-the-top phenomenal!!! The patina on it is superb, too!!!
    Thanks for the tour!!! Looking forward to the next!!!

    I am sure we would be surprised by the pieces the future generations will attach their memories to, cherish and collect... it is impossible not to consider the seductive powers of mass produced Chinese pieces of today. I sell MCM glass and ceramic, I am constantly trying to improve my work as curator and these days I will not list a piece if I don’t have the exact date or a designers name. I work in a niche and every time I try to set stronger boundaries to my work I am won over by the generosity of vintage. The possibilities of vintage always grab me by surprise, how time, even a short time, can offer unexpected value and spread appreciation to the most unexpected pieces... it is time over place...it will always be history over geography. I am betting on that.

    • @TheAntiqueNomad
      @TheAntiqueNomad  4 года назад +1

      You make a compelling case, and indeed there are some wonderfully designed modern pieces that are collected regardless of origin. I really should’ve spoken to the collectors of those Ertl pieces not having nostalgia for offshore items rather than making a blanket statement!

    I see a great deal of collectibles, primitives but so far very little in the way of furniture. We do, however, have one store chock full of vintage furniture, but it goes really fast! When someone purchases a Victorian home, they raid this store and buy up the lot of vintage furniture. Many dealers from California make the trip and bring truckloads back to the West to resell at a profit.

    • @TheAntiqueNomad

      @@TheAntiqueNomad ...Furniture is hard to find in most antique stores now because they take up so much room. Best to keep a binder with photos of the furniture along with the prices so buyers can flip through the photos. d becerra some may have been Mc Coy also. Frankoma was so hot in the early 70s they couldn’t fulfill all their contracts and had Mc Coy make some of the Easter 1972 plates for Oral Roberts University for them. Personally, couldn't stand Jim & Tammy. Ever. The quilt is really lovely; a shame that considering all the time and effort that went into them (both my mother and sister were hand quilters) they're not more expensive/valuable. Do you ever see any really early Bauer while in Kentucky since they started in Paducah? Wow, that kid's chair is really, really cool! It's a good thing you took that flamingo figure/vase, because if you hadn't I WOULD HAVE. Can you tell that I just do stream of consciousness comments as you go through?

    I noticed cpl pieces of salt glaze. I wonder if you skipped them because you know what I've come to know. I am E.TN Appalachian, so not far from this portion of KY. Lots of salt glaze dealers and collectors. It's expensive, at least 80% of what is out there is fake, and it's hard to tell the difference to the untrained eye. Many of the dealers honestly have no idea what they paid good money for to resale is fake. I finally know the difference and in the last decade I've found one, only one piece that was fairly priced and the real deal... And I screwed up and called it fake, so she wouldn't sell it to me when I found out I was wrong. My bad, but when you're spending that much money, better safe than sorry. On the other hand, when you have doubts, just stay quiet and don't burn the bridge. For what it's worth, the two pieces briefly in this vid right before min 4...are in awfully good shape, so prob repros. Just found this channel, and I'm down for it. Great vid!

      @TheAntiqueNomad  4 года назад +1

      I'm glad you're enjoying it! I do show salt glaze in my Collectors Carnival videos and probably elsewhere. You're right that there's a lot of reproductions, some very convincing (although an old piece really should have demonstrable wear, they weren't made just to look cute and sit there in the old days!). If I ever see a good side-by-side comparison of them, I'll have to highlight in a video.
