Pan Pastels Explained

  • Pan pastels are one of the most luxurious, artist grade soft pastel on the market. With their intelligent color system and vibrant color options, they are a joy to color with. However, they are on the pricey end of art supplies; require special tools to use; and have a bit of a learning curve-so they may not be one of the best coloring tools for beginners. But once you get used to them they are an amazing and fun art medium to use.
In this video I show you my small collection; how to store pan pastels; how to organize pan pastel tools; how to seal pan pastels and more.

for the broken pan, add rubbing alcohol to the pan until it is all absorbed in the pastel. use a tooth pick to stur so all the pastel is wet. you something to flatten use or you finger. As it dyes, you can press it more. when its totally dry, you are good to go.

I have been using the stick style pastels to color my backgrounds on my coloring pages for a long time... love them.. When I realized they did not mix, or change the color of my colored pencils etc. I realized how convenient and awesome the use was for me... Love seeing these, especially how you shared the "shade and value" concept..I think just seeing that helps everyone understand those terms so much better.

As for panpastels, I think the most affordable way to go is to get a basic set and mix your own colours. If you could afford a bit more, you can buy more pure colours and mix the tints and darker tones with your black and white.

Thank you so much for this! I've been trying to decide if I want to invest in these, how they work and if they'd help me take my coloring pages to the next level but I was intimidated by the PanPastels since there didn't seem to be a clear place to get instruction on where to start. I've been fiddling with Eye Shadow in place of something like this. this has given me the confidence to think I could add this medium to my pages! :)
Also..I love that your dog is on your desk. She is ADORABLE.

PanPasels supply extra lids for the products purchased in sets. Relatively inexpensive. Also, I use Pastel Mat paper. This allows lots of layers without using loads of fixative. The paper will also allow pastel pencils (or mixed-media) to be applied on top of the PanPastels. Personally, I only use them for under painting.

I agree about the fact that it is a messy media, but I seem to do better with pastels rather than paints and I even think I do better with the graphite and possibly charcoal, but I’m still working on the other stuff too like watercolors, but I haven’t started with gouache or oil paints yet. So I think I’m gonna go with Pan Pastels for a while. thank you for sharing.

Wonderful video and introduction to pan pastels. I caution you against using your fingers to take the pigment out of the pans as this can contaminate with the oils from your skin. I am using sticks of pastels and they are sticks of pigment and you can use that “broken” pan just use your tools to move the powder to your surface. You can create paintings without a fixative spray, just use good pastel papers that will grab and hold onto the pigment UArt has sanded paper and Pastelmat from Clairfontaine are just 2 brands that I have used successfully! Thank you for sharing this exciting new medium with your viewers.

Hey Jennifer…I guess I missed this one when it originally came out. At the moment I’m getting into pastels for my artwork (but still love my watercolors.) I’ve had a very small set of a dozen or so Pan Pastels around for a few years, but hadn’t really used them much. Now that I veered off into pastels, and bought some new stick pastels and pastel pencils, I’m wanting to make good use of my Pan Pastels too. (Watched a 3 year old Dawn Emerson video where she demonstrates some really unique ways to use PP…by stenciling & many mixed media uses…and on another channel they used them with stamps!) Because they’re an “investment supply” and pricey, I do look for sales and promos on them, but there really aren’t that many and the prices are very similar wherever I look. I also watched a video where the 2 founding creators of PP were on with a rep from Golden, who bought them out last year. They promise to keep the same high quality level, and I think they will. Someone from their audience had asked about “half pans” and they said there are no plans for that…but? Wouldn’t that be great! It sure would make them more affordable and practical since, unless you’re a really heavy user, the generous pan size now will last for many years with many colors hardly getting touched. Thanks for your great review!

Jennifer, I’ve never used pan pastels but have used chalk pastels. I have both chalk pencils and chalk in pans. The tools that you use with pan pastels are very similar to my chalk pastels supplies. Do you know how the chalk and pan pastels differ? I know with chalk pastels once you finish a product, you have to use a fixative or put it in a plastic sleeve so as not to have the chalk move if you touch it. I am a scrapbooker so I usually just put my finished spreads in the sleeve. My favorite tool was a pencil with a dentist clip (the kind they use to clip the plastic bib on you) with a mini cotton ball.

Send that broken one back! Even if you press it with alcohol it will never be the same. Also don't use your fingers on the pans. Your fingers will transfer oils to the surface. I've had the whole set for years and they are wonderful. They mix beautifully so even just getting a basic set will work for most folks. Amazon frequently has great prices for the sets and tools. I store all of mine in the flat trays that hold 20 pans. Keeps them nicely but takes up lots of space on the work surface.

For the broken pan. The company don’t recommend using rubbing alcohol or any other liquid. Because it can effect alter the natural properties. They suggest pouring the broken pieces in a baggie and crushing them use a roller pin or anything else you have on hand to crush it back to a fine pigment. Work the colours into the cornet cut the baggie and pour the powdered pigment into a container tin or whatever you have on hand. If you add a liquid to the natural powdered properties you could also void the warrenty.

I’m a retired new colorist who’s living on a fixed income; but I want “all the things.” I need to be very frugal when adding to my art supplies. It’s going to take me months and months to collect all of these pan pastels; so I have a few questions.
    1. Do these pan pastels come in a smaller size, or is this large pan the only size? If there is a smaller size that’s less expensive, maybe I could complete the collection faster.
    2. Are the stick pastels the same as pan pastels as far as the effects possible on a picture; or is the outcome totally different? My thought was to get a set of chalk pastels so I’d have the color options while I build up the pan pastel collection if they are somewhat interchangeable. I understand the difference in the pan and chalk stick; but again, while I’m building up my collection, will the sticks work until I have a lot of color choices.
    3. You mentioned that the pan pastels were formulated more like eye shadow pans; so if I’m on a really tight, or “no buy” budget, will eye shadows work on a picture until I can buy pan pastels?
Thank you for all the help!

    • @shireetropix6360

easy answers to these questions: no, no, no and no. Pan pastels are not chalk. It's like comparing alcohol markers to water colours. Sorry it's not better news but at least you can buy them individually.

Hello Rita, Micro glaze will NOT work with Pan Pastels. You'll need a spray fixative. been working with Pan Pastels for 2 years and now use the Blick Matte Workable Fixative spray. is an order with it, but it's not as bad as some other brands. Hope that helps.

I bought about 2 dozen pan pastels over 2 yrs ago. Haven’t done much with them except on my gel plates. I did discover you can seal your pan pastels using a clear medium that’s brayered onto a gel plate first then applied to your work. They are fun to play with but I would NOT use my fingers to apply. Honey, use a Qtip if you can’t afford the applicators, which are washable by the way.

If you call the company they will replace the broken / crumbled one. I had a number of them come that way and they sent me new pans with no returns needed. Don't order from anyone but a professional art supply company like Blick, Jerry's Artarama, Cheap Joes, etc as the company works with them in regard to proper shipping methods. It was the set I ordered on Amazon that arrived crumbled, even in the tower set.

An airbrush would work using a can and adapter or compressor.

Looks nice, but I don't see the benefit of them other than being a novelty. I"m not a collector type , I'm more of a minimalist so this seems a little over the top for me. I do hope you enjoy them and get much artistic happiness from them though.

It is fiddly to screw pans on top of each other. It is a pity, that one can not buy extra lids.

Great idea using rubbing alcohol to repair shattered PanPastels. Just like pencils, the pastels will not stand up to dropping.
