    As a person of color, I have so much love and respect for you speaking out about how disappointing the lack of deeper skin tones in the set is. The fact that you noticed it, were bothered by it, and chose to say something about the lack of inclusivity is a beautiful example of what it means to be an ally! Regardless of whether you were speaking from an artist standpoint or an ethical one, I appreciate it!

    • @yorutsumetai

      Oh Kay An “ally”? Is that what we’re calling decent people now. Odd.

      Dont care how it's been spelled you obviously understood the comment. Having said that, yes, I too thought it showed wonderful awareness that skin tones in this set of pastels are definitely limited. It's about time that more companies recognize the diversity existing in skin tones.

      Sir Havin I hear you. In my opinion, there is a major difference between being a “decent person” & being an ally aka a person who really helps/protects/supports others aka a person who wants to be more than decent.

    And seriously - they are pricey, got two skin-tone-friendly for the backgrounds etc, will buy one - two more when could afford. Also - I use a cheap silicon-sponges, cotton buds and a plethora of other improvised tools as with "normal" pastels and charcoal😉.

    I’ve had a set of pan pastels for years, but didn’t know really how to use them so thank you so much for doing this video! I originally bought the pastels for a versa mark ink set, using the pastels to color the invisible ink outlines.

    I've had the entire set for a few years now. The full set has lids for each individual color. I don't like the sponge tools they include, so I use tools made for chalk pastels. I find they last longer. If you get the blenders, course/fine, black/white, it adds more variety to what you can do.

    Pan pastels are my absolute fave! I’ve used them for 4 years and I love them so much, they are the perfect base. I only have a set of 10 and I haven’t had to replace any pans yet. I draw a lot of people with dark skin and they have two browns that work amazingly for the base. It is a shame they didn't include darker colours in this portrait set though - we're always an afterthought. One big tip is to use fixative/hairspray before you layer with colour pencils.

    • @ducknoisesintensify8007
      @ducknoisesintensify8007 4 года назад

      IDK if this is true so maybe you should test this but I heard that hairspray tends to yellow over time or any other changes and if it is Ent to hard can you try and prove this?

    Excellent Kirsty. You covered a lot here. Thank you. Panpastel is also erasable and can be used for tracing the way we used to trace using graphite. Now we can trace giving a coloured line if one wants to match certain tones for certain areas....saves erasing a graphite line if not wanted.

    Thank you for using & reviewing pan pastels. I have a a fair number of pans.. I have used them as base layer for my encaustic work. Beeswax & mixed media art . I had not tried mixing the pan pastels with coloured pencils. I will now! Seeing that the two work perfectly together. Your eye study is incredible. Pro: pan pastels last a long time, Colors blend very easily, Con : pan pastels are quite expensive, supplied applicator sponges wear out quickly,. hint: dollar store cosmetic wedges are low price and last much longer. Cotton swabs work well for fine detail. Great tutorial! Looking forward to seeing more of your work. I am a new subscriber.👩‍🎨

    You can mix colors by picking up multiple colors and swirling them together on a smooth piece of paper. Also, you can kind of blend Polychromos and Pablos into PanPastels! I suspect they have some kind of oil binder (and that's why they stick to smooth paper which soft pastels don't do) and it can dissolve the Polychromos to an extent. It doesn't work with other brands though.

    I adore my pan pastels! I have almost the complete set from adding them to my collection over the years. There is a 10 and 20 pan plastic snap-in palette for them (I have 3 of the 20 pan palettes filled and need another one for the mediums!). I usually use them for my background layers, then go over with stick pastels or go right over them with acrylics and mixed media. Thanks for a great video! I do abstract work, so it was "eye opening" 😁 to watch your process. 🎨😍

    Very imformative and helpful! I'm trying out different mediums to see which I favor and which will help me improve my mixed media hobby. I basically sketch portraits then use them in mixed media projects and thought pan pastels would be easiest and most efficient for coloring faces. I wasn't too excited about the color selection for portraits so I went to Dick Blicks and ordered them individually. I picked most of the colors from the portrait set and then added custom colors I thought I might find useful. They will arrive before Christmas and excited to give them a try. Thank you so much for your input and beatiful impression of an eye. You are a fabulous artist and I am greatful for you sharing your talent with us. You can get lots of disposable spongey applicators on Amazon. Different shapes and sizes mainly used for cleaning machinery, guns and for restorations. I wouldn't want to mix any colors more than necessary.

    I've been using pan pastels for over a year either on their own, with pastel or colorured pencils too. I agree, big time saver. My one piece of advice is to never get too carried away with the pan pastel if you know you want to use quite a bit of pencil, do NOT use too much pan pastel or the pencil wont stick. Sounds obvious but if not paying attention you can get carried away. Can't wait to see some of your work done with both in the future, Good luck and have fun Loren Melbourne Australia

    I saw someone use them in my figure drawing class and was immediately like: "I need these more than oxygen"
    Now I prefer watercolors and never found any. Well

    I went on a spending spree once and purchased a bunch of PanPastels, which I have only used a couple times. They are incredible for doing the blurred, distant, or bokeh backgrounds, especially. I have yet to use them as an underpainting for my colored pencils, but I am looking forward to trying it.
    But first, I'm on to watercolors! I'll definitely be checking out your videos for them - it's incredible how versatile you are with the various mediums!

    I have been using them for the past five years I find them a fun medium. Recently I found knives and covers and combo packs which I will be checking out soon. I really enjoy working with PANPASTELS a lot. I been using the landscape colors and basic colors. My biggest problem is cleaning the pads and making sure the pads fits the knives I have couple of pads that doesn't fit the knives included in box. I like using pastels pencils for fine details,I trying your and trying colored pencils. Be safe,strong and healthy. AND KEEP YOUR PENCILS SHARPENED AND YOUR BRUSHES WET.

    Good morning Kirsty :) The large sponge I use as a pallete to mix colours and then pick off with a Sofft tool. you can buy an empty 20 plastic tray to put the pots in, the tray lid works as seperate lids over the pots. To get darker shades you need the Shades set and Extra Dark sets or you can mix black and gray with the tones to darken. Buy yourself a colourless Blender, it will mix your colours on the paper.

    I love Panpastels, I've used black and white in a charcoal drawing, instead of using A LOT of the charcoal pencils for the large areas I used the PP for the large shadows and highlights and then used the charcoal pencils for details, the rose I drew turned out awesome.

    Yep... you got most of the pros! And the main con (not including the darks) buying pure colors (they have a set of 20 like you bought) or you could just buy individual would solve because you really can mix any color you need from those pure colors (including tints, shades and darks). HUGE timesaver... you hit that nail on the head. I use them with colored pencil, pastel pencil, stick pastel. They are wonderful!

    I put my pencils away due to the time consumption and the wear and tear of the hands (Arthritis) and switched to watercolours. However Pan pastels is something I have always wanted to try out with my pencils. Mum is a pastel artist - Christine Broersen, you would love her work!

    Hi, I just bought pan pastels and I'm trying to figure them out. I love how easily they go on and yes not a lot of time like colored pencils. I love the blending of the colors, is like oil painting in a way.

    Yes, these are very expensive, so when I was looking at them I decided on the dark earth tones, the primary set and some pics to customize those like three different shades of yellow ocher and a lighter burnt sienna. This way I had the darker skin tones and all the primaries to mix the colors.I’m glad you tried these! I like them a lot for covering backgrounds and mixed media at work as well as accenting portraits

    I'm so excited that you're working with panpastels! I've been working with panpastels for over a year and really enjoy them. I mainly do portraits and have found that using a pastel fixative spray helps me isolate layers of colour and build on them. I've also done panpastel portraits that have been completely blended on the paper, which gives a softer look and is nice as well. But I do prefer using fixative mainly because if I need to erase it only erases the top layer so I don't have to start over from the white of the paper. I think it also gives a more polished finished look. Have fun experimenting and I can't wait to see what you do with them.

      Have you found that the fixative alters the colours much? If not, could you share which brand you use please?

      Do you find fixative blurs and fades the colours out a bit? I've used a fixative on a pastel painting I did a while back but it doesn't look as crisp as it did before spraying

    • @sylvia8235
      @sylvia8235 4 года назад +1

      @@suestoons I haven't noticed any difference. If anything it makes the colours more intense to me. I use Blair Very Low Odor Spray Fix. I've also used Advanced Colored Pencil Textured Fixative but it's not designed for pan pastel and I've had a lot of problems with spattering, which is okay for colored pencils but not for panpastels as it's hard to fix.

    • @sylvia8235
      @sylvia8235 4 года назад

      @@TheArtofCreatingScrapbooking No, I haven't had a problem with that. It deepens the coloured a bit but that's about all.

    I just used Panpastel for the first time yesterday to finish a hyper realistic graphite pencil drawing. I used black for black curly hair and it really gave it a 3D appearance and it took me 30 minutes total to complete 2 heads of hair! Absolutely wonderful! Loved it!

    I have used them and when I color with my pencils to create a portrait I use father pan pastel to fill in then the pencils. The pan pastels are a time saver.
