I had a couple of pieces entered into the state students contest in 1966. Both placed. One first and the second 4th. I was not aware when my teacher entered them that they became property of the state. Unfortunately, I never saw them again. They are in the state archives. Anyway, my art teacher was wonderful. One thing I learned from him and have used my entire life since he gave it to me really works. Turn the picture upside down and stand back and look at it. It will tell you if the picture is balanced in composition or if something needs to be altered or removed. Works every time for me. Your artwork is beautiful. I hope that this tip is helpful. I am in my 70s and I am still learning. I learned a few things from you today. By sharing, we all get better at what we love. Thank you for your sharing.
good idea. I have definitely used that upside down trick before. Sorry for the super late response. I took an extended RUclips break, but Im back and just posted a new video today if you are interested: Become a MASTER of Color Theory with This COMPLETE 4 Step Process ruclips.net/video/--m2xTJFuDM/видео.html :) Happy New Year!!
Like so many of your viewers, I prefer the artwork without cropping. I feel it balances out the very busy area with the bananas. Thank you for your tutorial as I am an absolute beginner with the Pan Pastels.
Uncropped version is a better composition in my opinion. Also a word on fixative. People need to be aware it will darken the painting. I avoid fixative as much as I can for that reason. Another tip I found helpful is if you don't like the painting, you can wash off the pastel. Be careful though because some papers don't tolerate being washed off as well as others, so experiment to understand how the paper will behave. Another great tip is to do an underpainting if not working on toned paper. I do underpaintings with the pastels themselves, but also with watercolor. You could actually make a whole video on underpaintings. :)
I have never worked with Pan Pastels before, but when I worked on sanded paper with regular soft pastels on sanded paper, I had a lot of luck removing large areas of pastels with an old stiff bristle brush. Perhaps this would work with eliminating areas of Pan Pastels? I have a question concerning applying solvent. Which brushes would work best for blending colored pencil? I assume an old stiff bristle brush and rags work best for removing color, but do synthetic bristle brushes work well for blending? Since I would no longer be able to use these brushes for watercolor, I wouldn’t want to spend a lot on brushes I use this way.
Brilliant! I love that idea. Also, sorry for the super late response. I took an extended RUclips break, but Im back and just posted a new video today if you are interested: Become a MASTER of Color Theory with This COMPLETE 4 Step Process ruclips.net/video/--m2xTJFuDM/видео.html :) Happy New Year!!
I like your piece as it is, w/o cropping. I love that color in the background, even though it is just empty space, I find it very pleasing, and would keep it the same.
Thanks. I appreciate your feedback on this. Sorry for the super late response. Don't be afraid of empty or "dull" spaces. Your work is already quite "buzy" and information densed in the lower left area with all the budding bananas, so it feels good for the eyes to have calm spaces to rest on. It also brings balance and harmony into your painting. So don't crop it, if you ask me. It's perfect as it is. In fact very beautifully rendered. Thanks for the great tips. 👍❤🙏
I prefer the uncropped version. I have a good easel, but I keep forgetting to use it for pastels. I will pull it out again, and use it - I did like it whenever I remembered! I just discovered your videos a week ago, and I love them. You explain things so well.
I bet the easel will help a lot! Thanks for watching my videos and for sweet comments. If you are ever interested in feedback on your work, I have a Facebook group that is open to all artists. You can share your work and I can include it in critique videos.
Hi Lana, I came across your channel while looking for Pan Pastel tutorials after biting the bullet and getting a set of Pans. Thank you i found this video and others i watched of yours very useful and informative. I am also a colour pencil artist and when I found out that i could use them with the Pans I was very happy and excited. My subject matter at the moment is still life and i think the combination is going to work perfect for me. I think you should keep the full painting because when people say that the background looks different, for me it would be a talking point to describe what happens when you make a mistake or decide not to include it. Thank you again. Les
You are so welcome! I’m glad you got some pans… they are so fun and can really be clans what you can do with your colored pencils. Thanks for being here and supporting my videos!
Thanks for explaining the process for making an illustration with these materials. working with colored pencils is nice, but i want to cover wide areas without putting a lot of pressure, and pan pastel seems to work
i do not use the sound on my computer because i like to watch the videos when others are sleeping. do you provide written words - captioned script - that i can access? thank you - i just found your enjoyable site.
I love the uncropped version. It adds a beautiful color that goes so well with the greens and it adds interest. Thank you so much for your information!! I will put it to good use.
Thanks so much for your thoughts on not cropping! You are so welcome, thanks for watching! If you use the tips and end up with something you would like to share I hope you put it in the Facebook group, Lana Gloschat’s critique corner
I just got a set of pan pastels and am anxious to give them a try. I was wondering about using colored pencils and not pastel pencils for the detail work. I didn't know you could use colored pencils with pastels.
I got pan pastel as a present with the best intentions yet i have never used pastels in my life, your videos have been very informative and useful! Thank you very much! Im learning a lot! Im still very doubtful about mediums and papers since i have only used watercolors but i think is only about practice. Thank you so much
I am glad this was helpful. Would you like more tutorials and project ideas for pan pastel beginners? this is an idea I have been playing around with for new videos. I like it the way it is without cropping. I would probably bring in some soft background suggestions in that area that you softened and colored with a colored pencils.
That is so exciting! I have a ton of videos about using panpastels... here is the full playlist you can check out as you break in your new pan pastels! ruclips.net/p/PLTAp1NsDBLJ0Vsnz712tLWiPtwyLc4PAd
What a wonderful tutorial. I purchased some pan pastels 7 or 8 months back and have not done much with them. Most of the time regular soft pastels are my medium. This was great to see. Btw, I prefer the original. Just something so wonderful about the contrast of the peaceful aqua and the harsher edges of the bananas.
Glad this was helpful. I have been playing around with some video ideas about pan pastels and was wondering if you would enjoy the topic "your first project with pan pastels" or "limited palette with pan pastels" ? Hi Lana, I am a Live Caricature artist. Thinking of to incorporate pan pastel as my color medium. And for that I found your videos are really hepful! Thanks a lot for sharing the knowledge! Can you please suggest any quick process to fix the pigments, so that I can deliver the completed painting instantly to my client ?
Wow, this was a great video, I am going to have to watch it again and take notes! Just found you today and am anxious to watch your other videos! I better pop some popcorn - I see a binge watching session in my future!
Thank you for such an informative tutorial. I feel your original, non-cropped version is better, as the cropped one becomes too busy looking. The splash of open blue sky gives a sense of place.
Hey ther i got a question about how to Clean the Panpastel Sponges ? And i also want to let you know that all of you helpfull informations helped me to understand how to juse Panpastel. Realy great and enjoyable Video.
I bought a small set of pan pastels which I’m using on Pastelmat paper. I struggle to get enough pan pastel on my soft tool to get even coverage let alone fill up the tooth on the paper, but more frustrating is the fallout which grabs onto the paper on its way down. I use a sheet of the protective paper that comes with the Pastelmat as a rest to avoid smudging my work, but when I remove it the fallout has gathered underneath and can be really hard to shift. I’m obviously doing something wrong but can’t figure out how to fix the problem. 🤔
Have your tried drawing vertically on an easel! I have found that this can help a lot with the fall out.
I love your piece before you cropped. I actually liked the background after the solvent before you completed it with pastels. It gave it a beautiful quality. Love your work. Thank you for your generosity 😊
Mistakes I’ve made? Can we say…all of them! I’m so glad I found you! Being very much a beginner, I put away my pan Pastels shortly after I got them for my birthday last year. I have the whole set, so you can imagine the frustration! Seeing the ease of others’ work, I thought “eh, I can do that”! Ummhmm, yep, that’s me! So, I’m a new subscriber, and I’ll be eating up your videos for the next however long it takes! I do have a question: have you tried Pan Pastels on canvas? (Er, am I making mistake #11?)
So glad the content found you too! :) I have never used pans on canvas… and I wouldn’t expect it to work very well. I’d stick to textured papers like pastelmat, sanded paper etc. and smooth white cotton papers :)
I started using pan pastel with colored pencil so I have had to watch your video several times as there is a lot of good information and I need reminding. One question I have about using an easel to hold your work is - how do you fasten the art you are working on to the board so it stays 🙂
I typically tape my paper to a board and then secure the board onto the easel with the top part. Often with heavy duty paper like this I make a few little rolls of tape and place them in the back of the piece
On sanded paper I use textured fixative… but outside of that I don’t really use fixative until I’m getting the art ready to present… then I have a whole process which I show in this video. ruclips.net/video/AsHpPxsgaeg/видео.html
I prefer the original too. I like the resting place of the background. Its a nice contrast to the fruit shapes. You mention solvent. What exactly are you referring to and should a working fixative be a consideration for using it or avoiding it? Great video, thank you!
Thanks! I don’t typically use solvent on pieces like this (cp and panpastel on sanded paper) unless I really need to move things a around … I had used a textured fixative earlier in the process and that didn’t seem to impact the effectiveness of the solvent… it’s honestly all experimentation… I definitely think it’s worth a try after workable fixative, but I wouldn’t try this in a final piece… experiment on scrap paper first.
Thank you so much for this video, I know you used solvent to blend the background and I would leave this piece like it is because if I have learned anything it’s often the very flaws we see in our own art that others see as enhancements, my question is and sorry if this has been asked can pan pastels be laid down as a light base then pencil over the top then use pencil solvent? Or do the two not mix well when solvent is used? Thank you again can’t wait to dive into your other videos ❤
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for reaching out. I have noticed that solvent works just fine with pencils over panpastels. But definitely do a little test with your own materials on the surface you will be using so you understand what will happen before you work on your art
Hi Lana! 🤝 Just found your RUclips channel and have already binged several videos. You are just what the doctor ordered! I have the full set of PP and have been using them in conjunction with all my other mixed media supplies with some success, but I am hoping to save some steps/learning curve by watching your videos. I have already made all 10 mistakes! HAH! 🤓That's ok -- I have made some progress, so it was worth it, as the pieces weren't a commission etc. I am getting the hang of pencil over PP, but in all fairness, I am using Strathmore Bristol 300 Smooth and not the pastel-mat. I am not able to use as many layers of course, but I am figuring it out. I have already sketched my entire children's book I'm working on, so changing it now after months of sketches, isn't an option. (insert big sigh!😵💫) I have decided that the PP will be for the girl's skin and the sky. I just can't figure out how to make the grass, meadow, trees ( a huge expanse) to match the detailed scene. I will be pouring through your videos to see if I can find that information, and maybe it can save me a LOT of time, if Im able to find the look I'm after. You asked which of the 2 options for your finished piece we liked better. I would like to see another large leaf in that area, but I also think you can't go wrong. It is a STUNNING piece!! You have mastered your craft for sure! (As for me, I'm the one on the frozen lake trying to stay upright wearing slippers! 🤣) One video I would 1000% love to see how you set up your color families, by name, so I can have a more successful palette.I have kept them in the order they each came in their organizer.. shades, tints, etc. And how you set up your workspace when you get ready to work. Other's studios, art spots, nooks, etc fascinate me! I am so delighted I stumbled upon you. Blessings to you from the great Pacific Northwest, Lakewood, Washington! (Think Seattle but wayyyy nicer and cleaner!) 💛🖤💛
Nice to meet you Stacy! Thanks for the introduction and your support. Congratulations on finishing sketches for a children a book! That’s a big endeavor! Panpastel may work nicely for large areas like grass, but it’s hard to make much or a recommendation without seeing the work 😉 I would love to share my studio space. Great idea for a future video! Thanks!
Also, this may have been a bit extra, however I make swatch books, the paper I use varies from medium to medium. For instance, I’ll have a section for alcohol markers, so I swatch all my colors on all the different papers I use, marker paper, Bristol, mixed media, xpress it cardstock, rendr paper, neenah cardstock (time consuming as I have majority of the copic collection of colors but find it valuable.) Same with watercolors, using a sheet of paper type for my watercolors, hot press, cold press, different brands and price points. When I tell you how helpful it is, I mean it. Even if you don’t swatch your entire collection, a few colors swatched on multiple media paper will absolutely work fine, as it’s use lies in just how preferred media reacts because trust me, different paper yields different results. Marker/rendr paper don’t layer/blend well passed 2+layers as marker paper has a coating on it. I’m rambling, sorry lol, but I thought I’d just share (I didn’t invent this btw, I did it just because, however Im very sure it’s been done by many artists. I’m not inventing the wheel here, as they’re just swatches, lol. Highly recommend this though.
Thank you very much for sharing these mistakes with us. I as just set to start using my pastels in a project when I was given 90:days notice to leave my home. Darn it all!!! I so dislike packing and moving and now at nearly 79, it is even worse lol.. rents have risen, so, I may not be able to afford a 3 bedroom house using one bedroom for me. One spare bedroom for grandchildren or family or friends and this third bedroom is used for my workroom. I’m also a textile artist you see, so having a third bedroom has been very important. So I’m trying not to become anxious as I pack and LABEL very, VERY carefully. I feel as lon* as I have a garage, I can store my crates of materials there instead of a third bedroom. How do you store YOUR supplies. A shelf or a draw please or just in those large plastic crates with clock on lids. Great for textile art supplies. My large work table my husband made me before he suffered from Alzheimer’s and needs to live in a locked ward in a Nursing Home is marvellous. He built all my storage into its base, clever chap that he used to be. So that can be stacked in a garage too. I will be interested in storage ideas please, When my mother passed a while ago, I got her spare not marching sets of drawers. Now they can slot in between my bedroom furniture or even in my Livingroom and probably drawers are a good storage area for pencils, brushes and ART paraphernalia for other than TEXTILE ART paraphernalia. Maybe I’ve answered my own question for me at the moment. Empty drawers in my garage can be slotted in between furniture I guess and there I have storage for everything. However I’d still be very interested in how YOUR own Art paraphernalia is stored, or also those who watch like I do please. I’m really enjoying your video’s and have subscribed thank you Lana!!! Margot New Zealand.
Thank you. Which solvent did you use? I like it the way it is. The turquoise background is nice. Why do you use pan pastels instead of a soft pastel like Richelson?
Hi! I use Eco House Nuetral Thin Solvent Blick:tinyurl.com/yc3msdfw, and also Gamsol Odorless Mineral Spirits Amazon: amzn.to/3VEFbLz Blick: tinyurl.com/yx8x9eam and I choose pan pastels because you can apply them with sponges… it feels more like painting to me, which I like. Pastelmat is a fairly niche product. I would recommend ordering online. They don't have it at my local shop either. 👉PASTELMAT Amazon: amzn.to/3N8BkC7 Blick: tinyurl.com/4p66ad8m Also, sorry for the super late response. I am left handed and always smear. I never thought to put my work upright. Thank you! That should help some. Any other left handed tricks? I like the cropped piece better. 😊
I would say that working from right to left would help and putting a piece of tracing paper under your hand while you are working, You can see the way I keep my work clean with this technique in this video: ruclips.net/video/h3SwCPiyzIw/видео.html
I'm doing a pan pastel but I'm trying to get a section to pop out more. I may have put too much color on already. I have the pastels but trying to keep it soft with pans. I know about using opposite color to make it pop but its just not popping like I want.
Darn. Sometimes a coat or two of textured fixative (tinyurl.com/yc4ybc9k) might help you be able to lay down some more color, but once theres a lot of color down and they are beginning to mix with each other it can become more difficult to brighten colors. Keep trying and experimenting and if this one doesn't work, at least you learned something for the next one :)
Hi Lana, another great tutorial. When you blended the background out and you had got to the point of a very soft effect of what was there I personally thought that looked good....well on Camera anyway. Of course that's easy to say sitting here but when you are doing it you don't always see it do you....been there done that lol
Thank you. I don't often use fixative with the pan pastels unless I am going to frame without glass which I share in this video: ruclips.net/video/AsHpPxsgaeg/видео.html Also, sorry for the super late response. I took an extended RUclips break, but Im back and just posted a new video today if you are interested: Become a MASTER of Color Theory with This COMPLETE 4 Step Process ruclips.net/video/--m2xTJFuDM/видео.html :) Happy New Year!!
Hi Lana, it feels great that I found your channel! It’s so informative 🙏🏼❤️❤️❤️ So, I am a Live Caricature artist and looking forward to pick up pan pastel medium for its colouring process. It would really helpful if you kindly can suggest a way to fix the medium in a faster way, as in Live sessions I need to deliver the artwork as quickly as possible.
Thanks for watching. I haven't used pan pastels in that way.. but a workable fixative might be a good option. Unfortunately that isn't a product I use often so I don't have one to recommend.
I would say that because the top section of the leaf is more pronounced than the bottom section, cropping the background eliminates this situation and improves the overall effect
I'm so new to pan pastel that I accidentaly touched the pan pastels with nails and finger tips. I only have 7 colours : ultramarine, light ultramarine, yellow, red, magenta, black and white. I see that you have all the colours of every set. I can't afford all sets so I'll get the most important ones individually. I also do coloured pencil and I plan on using pan with my coloured pencils artworks. I'm doing an 18x24'' project on bristol with 2 layers of clear gesso (it feels like sanded paper because clear gesso is also used for pastel ground) and I have to finish it for Thursday. I'll try pan pastels on different paper to see if there's one that I prefer (luxuryarchival is super expensive so I might have to find an alternative for bigger papper format).
After applying the fixative, can you use the colored pencils? If it works that way, I wouldn't smear the pastels as much. I'm left handed and always had the smearing problem.
It depends on how many layers of fixative you use. You will still have smudging with only 1-2 light layers, but after 4-5 layers the pastels become pretty permanent. I am I’ll spray this much for larger pieces that I’m worried about smudging but I often just do a couple layers so I get the tooth of the paper reestablished.
I like the original version. I’m new to pan pastels having used pastels for a couple of years. I like how it feels like painting. Your tutorial was just what I needed and it really helped watching you work at the same time. I have been working on my first pan pastel painting of a fall forest scene but have been using pastel pencils for the details. Your video talked of coloured waxy pencils. What are your thoughts on that?
I think pastel pencils would work great with panpastels. I am just personally biased to the way colored pencils work and I have more experience with them... pastel pencils is actually a more traditional combo with panpastels :) Thanks for watching the video. I am glad it was helpful!
Leave it as is - the negative space balances the composition and the colours provide some contrast / interest. Great video btw! Stumbled on this one and have subscribed.
Hi Lana, I was just about to ask you how much pastel to use so I could still apply pencil over when you answered the question 😀 thank you for the video.❤️
This is the first time I have watched one of your videos and I’m glad I found you. I have used soft pastels for years and decided to try pan pastels. I have a set of 20. I have used Blair fixative, no odor on my pastel paintings. The colors are darker after spraying. I have never used textured fixative. I have an extensive collection of soft pastels and pastel pencils. I really like the luminous quality of the pencils you used. Can you order them from Amazon? Please tell me the name of the pencils. I don’t want to purchase more pan pastels at this time, until I’m familiar with this product. Sorry, this is so lengthy; I have been in an extended slump, and your video has motivated me to resume!!!
Thanks for reaching out! The pencils I used are luminance pencils and they are available on Amazon (amzn.to/3F8ZyZM) they are a bit expensive but so worth it! Such high quality and beautiful colors. They go great with the panpastels
@@LanaGloschatArt Thanks for your answer. It was exactly what I wanted to know. I was asking mainly because I rekindled with drawing (in general) most recently, after a ten year hiatus. Somehow I was rapidly drawn to a semi-soft pastel set I had bought several years ago, left almost untouched... Well, I’m surprised by what I achieved in a few mounts. I went full-on in abstract mode, and got many praises by people around me, and a few orders also. With that said, I was amazed by your sense of composition and, at one point of your video, I felt that the painting could very well engage in an abstract endeavor. Will follow your channel carefully. Thank you for sharing your work!
I just stumbled onto your channel. What a great tutorial! I have one question. Can you use another solvent other than odorless mineral spirits? I am just curious. Thank you so much for the inspiration and instruction. Kit
If you are blending pencils then OMS is probably your best bet… but there are loads of options that are safe. I like this one:GAMSOL Odorless Mineral Spirits BLICK: tinyurl.com/yx8x9eam Amazon: amzn.to/3VEFbLz I think that PanPastel has a blender that they sell for pan pastels specially.
You can use water with pan pastels as it works with watercolors. Or you can use alcohol (70% or 90%) on both colored pencil and pan pastel. I don't use any solvent with pan pastel, as the colors easily blend with each other when you use a light touch. Play with 'em! Enjoy!
I ran into the last problem of too much detail in the background. I am using matte paper. Can I use a solvent? Your video is very helpful and extremely informative. I have subscribed. Thanks for giving me direction.
I am learning so much from your videos! I’ve ordered new supplies and can’t wait to get started. I prefer the original to the cropped version. Having an area with little detail sort of relieves my eyes and allows contrast with and more focus on the more detailed part of the drawing.
Lana! Love your tutorials! Quick question: Have you ever used pan pastels on Pastelbord? If so, did you like the experience/result? Many thanks...and keep up the great work.
@@LanaGloschatArt It's a hard board, like samonite, one side of which has been treated to resemble pastelmat texture. It's very durable (because it is, essentially, a board). If I give it a try, I'll let you know how I like the results.
I wouldn't think so. Panpastels are packed in really tight and I think messing around with a bunch of loose dust pigment wouldn't work well and would be really messy and unhealthy.
Very helpful. Straightforward teaching. Love the "mini series" concept, it gives opportunity to practice without taking on too much with large pieces. Your advice here has really helped. The easel use for fall out is challenging for me, but I will give it a go. The fixative advice gave me that "ahhh" moment and really explained well why I have struggled with how to do this. Thank so much
I am SO happy to hear this was helpful for you! if you do create a mini series I hope you share it over in the critique group! I would love to see it! facebook.com/groups/259583855930221 Why do you feel that the easel is difficult?
@@LanaGloschatArt I think it is just that I have never used one for pencil work. I did when I worked in oils. My hands and arms hurt more when using the easel. I am not on Facebook anymore, but will consider setting up one just for my art work. Thank you
@@tracymariablackwell that makes sense. Sometimes your arm can hurt if your easel is too high. Make sure you are sitting upright and that you have a chair that supports your posture, (or good shoes if you are standing) and make sure your hand is never drawing higher than shoulder height. Maybe that will help..: but also each body is different and if it doesn’t work for your body you have to honor that
Darn, there isn't a way to press it back together that I know of, but don't throw it out. I am sure you can still use it… it will just be clunkier. Sorry for the super late response. Big THUMBS Up Lana...great video...I was wondering why you choose to use colored pencils instead of pastel pencils...is there any specific advantage ..and my second question is when you refer to smooth cotton papers are you talking about papers like MiTienes or Strathmore pastel paper ?...and by the way don;t crop the piece I think the way it is..is a better composition, it gives the subject some breathing room the cropped version looks to tight and compressed (just my opinion)
Thanks so much! I use colored pencils for a few reason. I have a lot more experience with them, a bigger selection, and I feel that they have a more permanent application on sanded paper. But honestly the biggest reason is just that I’m not as practiced with them. Do you use pastel pencils, colored pencils or both? Smooth white cotton papers include a hot pressed watercolor paper and high quality Bristol vellum. (Traditional drawing papers) Thanks so much!
I don't currently but what a good idea. I will put it on the list. Also, sorry for the super late response. Very happy to find your channel Lana, thank you for the excellent tips, I've subbed and I'm looking forward to watching more of your videos. I'm sure it's too late now as this video was uploaded a year ago, but I liked the uncropped version, I think the aread of quiet space gives a nice balance, but it's a very personal thing I guess :)

Thanks for the video! Very helpful. I am starting a painting, pan pastel for background and color pencils for subject. Should I do the background first? Have seen a few artists do this and then lay a sheet of wax paper down so not touching with your hands. Thoughts? Thank you 😊
sorry for the late reply. This is definitely an option. Though I personally like to do a full lay in with the background and the subject. Then I can actively compare and make choices that harmonize the piece. then when I complete finishing details I usually complete the background first and then the foreground... but again i do bounce around to keep the piece harmonious.
@@LanaGloschatArt ok thank you. I did the background first and it is working out. I realize I just have to try things out for myself as every artist has their own process 🧑🏻🎨
I am really familiar with colored pencil and have a lot of them, where as I’m not as familiar with pastel pencils and don’t have many… but pastel pencils would also work

Happy New Year!!
@@LanaGloschatArt Happy New Year to you as well. I will catch the video. Thanks for sharing. Good health to you.
Like so many of your viewers, I prefer the artwork without cropping. I feel it balances out the very busy area with the bananas. Thank you for your tutorial as I am an absolute beginner with the Pan Pastels.
thanks for your feedback!
Wow! I bought pan pastels without knowing anything. I am going to watch this over and over again.Thank you!
you are going to have so much fun with your panpastels!
Thanks so much for sharing!
@@LanaGloschatArt Sure! I'm obsessed with soft pastels.
I love how you said mistakes *WE* make, including yourself. Usually it’s “number” mistakes you are making with such and such medium.
Thanks! I won’t pretend I never make mistakes… ha ha! How do you think I come up with all these ideas 😉
I use a very small vacuum cleaner to suck up dust at various times during pastel work.
Brilliant! I love that idea. Also, sorry for the super late response. I took an extended RUclips break, but Im back and just posted a new video today if you are interested:

Happy New Year!!
Thanks for that thoughtful feedback and thanks for watching
Keep it as is. The turquoise color really gives the eye some relief.
Thanks so much for your feedback and for watching!
I have not enough adjectives to describe your Job , I love it !

I order plenty of those soft puffs my problem was getting holes in the sponge thing
What a wonderfully informative video! I'm looking forward to watching many more.
Thanks for explaining the process for making an illustration with these materials. working with colored pencils is nice, but i want to cover wide areas without putting a lot of pressure, and pan pastel seems to work
I love it the way it is.....gorgeous!
Thanks so much!
i do not use the sound on my computer because i like to watch the videos when others are sleeping. do you provide written words - captioned script - that i can access? thank you - i just found your enjoyable site.
My recommendation would be RUclips’s cc or headphones. I don’t write up captions at this point… sorry
thanks for letting me know RUclips has settings for captions
Keep the piece the way it is !
Thanks
I love the uncropped version. It adds a beautiful color that goes so well with the greens and it adds interest. Thank you so much for your information!! I will put it to good use.

Aww thanks so much.
I just got a set of pan pastels and am anxious to give them a try. I was wondering about using colored pencils and not pastel pencils for the detail work. I didn't know you could use colored pencils with pastels.
Yea! It’s one of my favorite combos
@@LanaGloschatArt Thank you Lana, just gave it a try, really great and saves me tons of money. Pastel pencils are very pricey.
I got pan pastel as a present with the best intentions yet i have never used pastels in my life, your videos have been very informative and useful! Thank you very much! Im learning a lot! love that! thanks

I cropped. The empty space and contrasting background colour really draw my eye to the main subject. Thanks for the video, it was very helpful 😁
In your opinion, what is the best board, paper, etc for pan pastels? For doing portraits. Thank you.
Let me know what would be helpful!

Glad you found your way here! Enjoy your binge session... thanks in advance for watching all my videos ...ha ha :)
Thank you for such an informative tutorial. I feel your original, non-cropped version is better, as the cropped one becomes too busy looking. The splash of open blue sky gives a sense of place.
Thanks so much and I think you are right about the piece. I have decided not to crop!
Hey ther i got a question about how to Clean the Panpastel Sponges ? And i also want to let you know that all of you helpfull informations helped me to understand how to juse Panpastel. Realy great and enjoyable Video.
Just soap and water! Wash the sponge out, rinse and then air dry
Also, sorry for the super late response. I took an extended RUclips break, but Im back and just posted a new video today if you are interested:

Happy New Year!!
I love your piece before you cropped. I actually liked the background after the solvent before you completed it with pastels. It gave it a beautiful quality. Love your work. Thank you for your generosity 😊
Thanks! I left this piece uncropped!
@@LanaGloschatArt just as I thought 😉 Thank you!
I quite like the blue patch.. It balances our the rest of the painting which is full of something or other.. 😀
Thanks. I have left it and I think it was the right call!
Definitely use the cropped version. Another informative video. Thanks
That’s kind of what I was leaning towards! Thanks for your feedback and for watching!
I like it as is. Allows a place for the eyes to rest
I love that! thanks
Your tips are so valuable….thank you so much.
You are so welcome! Glad they were helpful!
Love the way it is. This is all great for me. I have just started using it
Thanks! Glad to hear it!
I like the uncropped version!
THANKS
What fixative do you prefer? Love your videos. Thank you
On sanded paper I use textured fixative… but outside of that I don’t really use fixative until I’m getting the art ready to present… then I have a whole process which I show in this video. ruclips.net/video/AsHpPxsgaeg/видео.html
I used watercolour paper and pencils then on top pan pastel then white pens for detail
Great information! Really appreciate the time you spent advising about mistakes.
Thanks so much for watching! Glad to hear it was helpful!
Panpastel may work nicely for large areas like grass, but it’s hard to make much or a recommendation without seeing the work 😉
I would love to share my studio space. Great idea for a future video! Thanks!
Thank you - very helpful and much appreciated
You are so welcome!
I really like it the way it is👍
Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
You are so welcome!
Also, this may have been a bit extra, however I make swatch books, the paper I use varies from medium to medium. For instance, I’ll have a section for alcohol markers, so I swatch all my colors on all the different papers I use, marker paper, Bristol, mixed media, xpress it cardstock, rendr paper, neenah cardstock (time consuming as I have majority of the copic collection of colors but find it valuable.)
Same with watercolors, using a sheet of paper type for my watercolors, hot press, cold press, different brands and price points.
I think that’s a great idea! I love mixing colors so I just grab something that’s close and then adjust it.
I will be interested in storage ideas please,
When my mother passed a while ago, I got her spare not marching sets of drawers.

Hi, I have just enjoyed your pastelmat video. Is it possible to use coloured pencils over a background of regular pastels ?
I would keep the pastel thin and I would work in a textured surface, but yes that is definitely possible!
This is very helpful, thanks.
You are welcome! Thanks for watching.
Hi Lana, another great tutorial. When you blended the background out and you had got to the point of a very soft effect of what was there I personally thought that looked good....well on Camera anyway. Of course that's easy to say sitting here but when you are doing it you don't always see it do you....been there done that lol
So true!

So happy to have you here!!
Hi Lana, it feels great that I found your channel! It’s so informative 🙏🏼❤️❤️❤️
So, I am a Live Caricature artist and looking forward to pick up pan pastel medium for its colouring process.
Thanks for sharing your ideas. I appreciate it.
I'll try pan pastels on different paper to see if there's one that I prefer (luxuryarchival is super expensive so I might have to find an alternative for bigger papper format).
wow what a big piece! I hope you enjoy the process! Best of luck!
@@LanaGloschatArt I do enjoy it. I just need to learn this medium.
Loved your video! Very helpful tips indeed!! Prismacolor pencils are super waxy if you haven’t tried them!
Thanks so much! I definitely have tried prisms colors they were my first set!!!
i like the blue area in the background
Thanks so much!
good advice. was the solvent at the end an alcohol wash?
no actually its odorless mineral spirits. Here is a link to check it out. tinyurl.com/yx8x9eam
So great to have you here and thanks for the feedback
Hi Lana, I was just about to ask you how much pastel to use so I could still apply pencil over when you answered the question 😀 thank you for the video.❤️
You got it! Glad to hear it was helpful❤️
This is the first time I have watched one of your videos and I’m glad I found you. I have used soft pastels for years and decided to try
pan pastels. I have a set of 20. I have used Blair fixative, no odor on my pastel paintings. The colors are darker after spraying. I have never used textured fixative. I have an extensive collection of soft pastels and pastel pencils. I really like the luminous quality of the
pencils you used. Can you order them from Amazon? Please tell me the name of the pencils. I don’t want to purchase more pan pastels at this time, until I’m familiar with this product. Sorry, this is so lengthy; I have been in an extended slump, and your video has
motivated me to resume!!!
Thanks for reaching out! The pencils I used are luminance pencils and they are available on Amazon (amzn.to/3F8ZyZM) they are a bit expensive but so worth it! Such high quality and beautiful colors. They go great with the panpastels
This work is flawless. Do you commit yourself in abstract work?
Thank you so much! Sorry I don't know what you mean by "commit yourself in abstract work"
I do abstract doodles sometimes but nothing very serious :)
Kit

I think that PanPastel has a blender that they sell for pan pastels specially. Sorry for the super late response. I took an extended RUclips break, but Im back and just posted a new video today if you are interested:

Happy New Year!!
You can use water with pan pastels as it works with watercolors. Or you can use alcohol (70% or 90%) on both colored pencil and pan pastel. I don't use any solvent with pan pastel, as the colors easily blend with each other when you use a light touch. Play with 'em! Enjoy!
I think panpastel would work great with gouache or acrylic gouache and airbrush
I don't use any of those materials... but now I want to!
Go with the uncropped version. It adds more interest to the composition even though it contains empty space (not necessarily a bad thing!
Thanks! I appreciate that idea
Thanks so much for another great video Lana, I like the background/composition as it is, it looks lovely!
You are so welcome. Thanks for watching and thanks for your thoughts on the crop!
I ran into the last problem of too much detail in the background. I am using matte paper. Can I use a solvent? Your video is very helpful and extremely informative. I have subscribed. Thanks for giving me direction.
yes you can use solvent, but use less than you normally would and test first!
I am learning so much from your videos! I’ve ordered new supplies and can’t wait to get started. I prefer the original to the cropped version. Having an area with little detail sort of relieves my eyes and allows contrast with and more focus on the more detailed part of the drawing.
Thanks! I am so glad to hear that! I hope you have a ton of fun with your new supplies!
Lana! Love your tutorials! Quick question: Have you ever used pan pastels on Pastelbord? If so, did you like the experience/result? Many thanks...and keep up the great work.
Hey thanks for watching. I haven’t used pasteboard before. I’m sorry not to be of much help
I haven’t used pasteboard before. Is it Pastelmat on a harder backing?
@@LanaGloschatArt It's a hard board, like samonite, one side of which has been treated to resemble pastelmat texture. It's very durable (because it is, essentially, a board). If I give it a try, I'll let you know how I like the results.
@@charlesculbertson8663 that would be great! Enjoy!
It's maybe a weird question, but can I premix pan pastels & store in glass/plastic containers?
Maybe that will help..: but also each body is different and if it doesn’t work for your body you have to honor that
Hi I dropped one of my pans all the pastel is broken is there a way to make it press back together
Darn, there isn't a way to press it back together that I know of, but don't throw it out. I am sure you can still use it… it will just be clunkier. Sorry for the super late response. I took an extended RUclips break, but Im back and just posted a new video today if you are interested:

(Traditional drawing papers)
Thanks so much!
do you have a resource on horizon line and perspective please ?
I don't currently but what a good idea. I will put it on the list. Also, sorry for the super late response. I took an extended RUclips break, but Im back and just posted a new video today if you are interested:

Try some metal flakes in the background space for a fun different approach
Fun idea! Thanks
So glad to have you here. I did keep this piece un cropped, thanks for your feedback.
I like the way you have it, without cropping. It lets the other part of the design shine and it's a cheery color.
Thanks for your feedback. I didn't end up cropping this one. Also, sorry for the super late response. I took an extended RUclips break, but Im back and just posted a new video today if you are interested:

Both versions are nice but the cropped seems to flow better with the other 2
thanks
I realize I just have to try things out for myself as every artist has their own process 🧑🏻🎨
thanks for the video can i ask please why do you use coloured pencils and not pastels pencils for the finer details on your work?
I am really familiar with colored pencil and have a lot of them, where as I’m not as familiar with pastel pencils and don’t have many… but pastel pencils would also work
@@LanaGloschatArt thanks for answering my nosey question i really like your channel
