Thank you. Now I feel confident enough to buy just a few pan pastels and still get the colours I need with out breaking my budget. I appreciate your time putting your awesome tutorials together.
Glad it was helpful! 😊
I've been thinking about trying out pastels for a little while now, this was so useful. Thanks so much, I may treat myself after watching this. 😊
Glad it was helpful!
Awesome video. I had been looking at pastels for a little while but I'm on a bit of a budget. These tutorials are a great start for the budget friendly pastels. This is a really informative video.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for that. I thought I was the only one incapable of using pastels, at least I seemed to be in art school. I shall look forward to following your tutorials.
You're so welcome! 😊
Thankyou Kirsty. This video is just what I needed. Lots of great tips
Thankyou, glad you like it 😊
By far the best panpastel video I have ever watched. I started with the saint basic set then added the tints. But still don’t use them much as I haven’t found many beginner friendly limited pallette tutorials so im very glad I found your channel
I'm glad it was helpful 😊
this is neat
So glad you made this video. I have the 20 color basic set and have been arguing with myself about getting the other sets. After this I'll save my money. THANKS!
I'm glad it was useful! :)
You definitely don't need every colour (but it makes it quicker/easier, that's all!)
Great advice for getting the best use out of those expensive sofft tools. Thanks!
Thankyou, glad it was helpful :)
Nice to see some panpastel-tutorials over here. As I said on your patreon channel I find panpastel somewhat difficult to master but I love the brightness of the colours. I haven´t drawn landscapes yet but perhaps it is worth it for tryin out panpastels. Thank you for inspiration and your well done tutorials :)
Thankyou, I appreciate it!
Pan pastels by themselves are great for landscapes! I would find it difficult to draw animals, because I like a bit more detail... but I think you could do wildlife if you work large enough!
But more impressionistic/expressive landscape with less detail is easy to do with Pan Pastels :)
Brilliant video. So useful.
Glad it was helpful!
What a wonderful tutorial. So inspiring. Thank you for sharing ❤
You are so welcome!
You're a good teacher. 😊
Thank you! 😃
Thank you, this helps me so much ,
Glad it helped! 😊
Great video, as usual. I'm thinking of getting some PanPastels but the mixing thing has been of concern. You're the GOAT of Pastels, on youtube, IMO.
Glad it was helpful! Mixing Pan Pastels takes a lot more time, but if you only have a small set of pastels, it can be really helpful 😊
Brilliant! I knew I could do this so I decided to go for just a few primary colors , I just haven’t attempted it yet and i was wondering if anyone did a video on that and here u are! Thanks for sharing
You're welcome, hope it helps 😊
Thought this might be helpful!😊
Thank you Kirsty. Brilliant video and so useful
You’re welcome 😊
Thanks, that's helping me a lot. I do my own paint mixes since I only have the primary colours to paint all the shades. I will do that with newly acquired set of 5 pan pastels and I'll get the raw umber and the burnt sienna since making browns with only the primary colours alone. And I do plan on using this along with coloured pencils.
Glad it was helpful!
It's definitely much easier to get a couple of extra colours that you know you will use often (or takes too much effort to mix!) like browns/neutrals/greens etc depending on the subject matter you like painting 😊
@@KirstyRebeccaFineArt I'll be looking for a few colours like a few grays, greens or even pink or oranges. I'm very new to this and pastels in general as I draw on my computer a lot or draw and paint on paper with coloured pencils, graphite, acrylic and watercolour. I sometimes use ink as well.
Very beautiful
Thankyou 😊
Thank you for showing this! I was a bit lost cause I wanted to get some to use for backgrounds on my pencil drawings. But they're so expensive and I was like.. how do I know what colours I want to use the most? This is absolutely perfect! Thank you for saving my wallet haha
Glad it was helpful!
this video inspired me to try pastels!
I'm glad 😊 they're really fun!
I get everything everywhere! 😉
Fantástico!! Que bonito
Thank you 😊
Yeeeez. Color!! One of my nightmares. I know I should move past my comfort zone but I dealing with graphite and charcoal seems best for me.
haha I feel your pain! I'm still no expert with colour, and I also started with graphite for many years before moving to colour!
Landscapes like these are a good start because the colour doesn't have to be 100% accurate :)
@@KirstyRebeccaFineArt Yes, yes that's what I'm thinking of trying. Landscapes!!! This only means I'll be following a lot of Bob Ross's tutorial. Thanks for replying, I'm looking forward to learning more from you :D
Love charcoal for portraits. I use the pencils.
@@helenarichard pastel eh? Will keep that in mind
I tried making sunsets and the Pan Pastel blends so much better on normal drawing paper than on Clairfontaine PastelMat. I think for soft undefined subjects like clouds, regular paper works much faster, especially if you want to blends straight on the paper. I also tried Fabriano pastel paper and I liked that it didn't grab on too much to my pastels. But for defined and sharp pastel drawing I do like PastelMat
Yeah the paper choice definitely makes a difference depending on what subjects you're doing 😊
I find if you want more than a few layers, it doesn't work well on smooth paper, but I can use Pans on Pastelmat for any subject (whether it's a simple like clouds, or complicated subjects with fur 😊 )
@@KirstyRebeccaFineArt Do you mean that PastelMat allows better to put one subject over the other, not just color blending? That is true. Regular paper will blend everything too much I suppose. It can come in handy for some subject, like mixed textures: I drew a detailed butterfly with a fluffy core body and was very pleased with all the different blues I got on the Fabriano paper and bright white (it was grey paper, wonderful for white animals or animals with a white edge. But I don't need to tell you that I suppose 🤪
Very nix paintings :-) And well explained - thanks :-))))
Thankyou 😊
ur amazing !!!!!
Thank you 😊
Are the larger sponges also made by Sofft or a different brand? Where can one buy the larger sponges...can one use regular makeup sponges?
Yes they are all Sofft tools! It depends which country you live in. I am in Australia so I buy them from theartshop.com.au! Regular makeup sponges are not the same, they are made from different materials.. some people use them, but they don't pick up/apply pastel very well in comparison :)
Kirsty Rebecca Fine Art Thank you!
They look exactly like make-up sponges. I often use Q-tips for fine pastel drawings. Large art stores sell all types of rubber tipped brushes for pastel, and all sorts of sponges, Both sofft and generic. What you could also use is cotton disks but I havent tried yet.
Could you please do a couple more paintings using just these 5 colors?
Yes, I do plan on doing more in the future 😊
Kirsty, I purchased an Armadillo Landscape pan pastel set. The set came with 4 empty storage pans. Please tell me how you would use these storage pans? Thanks!!!
Hi, sorry I'm not sure what the "Armadillo Landscape Pan Pastel" set is (I've never hear of that)
My own set (www.kirstyrebeccafineart.com/new-panpastel-set) doesn't come with any empty pans so I'm a bit confused as to what you're referring to
Sometimes the sets come screwed together in a stack (rather than flat in a tray like mine does) with a slightly deeper container that holds some of the Sofft Tool covers so that might be it
You may have to contact Pan Pastel themselves with this questions!
Sorry I couldn't be more help
Still very expensive just 5 colours ,i find my conte sticks last ages and much cheaper😊
I also have conte sticks, but Pan Pastels are actually less expensive in the long run
Unlike pastel sticks, you can buy the basic set of 5 colours (red, yellow, blue, black and white) and mix any colour you need, just like paint!
That is something you can't do easily with soft pastel sticks or pastel pencils (this is why people usually have hundreds of pastel sticks/pencils - which is way more expensive than buying 5 Pan Pastels)
They're actually not that expensive when you compare how much pastel is in each pan
Pan Pastels contain 40% more pastel than an average stick and have 4-5 times more coverage. They last a very long time in comparison to sticks
I've had my full set of pan pastels for about 5 years and haven't run out of any colour yet, and I do a lot of artwork, and if you take care of the Sofft tools, they last a long time as well 😊
There are also many other benefits such as not having to touch the pastel (so it's less mess on your hands/artwork/desk etc), less excess dust in the air, as well as being able to control how much pastel you are applying to your surface which means you don't fill up the tooth of the paper too quickly - allowing for the addition of a few layers of pastel pencils/coloured pencils etc if you wish!
You can also use the smaller Sofft tools or brushes to apply into smaller areas, which can be hard to to with a soft pastel stick
I honestly recommend Pan Pastels over any other type of pastel because they are actually more cost effective (along with all the other benefits mentioned above) 😊
Would colourless blender help in creating the background areas?
I honestly haven't tried the blender from Pan Pastel because I don't really see a need for it when the colours blend perfectly by themselves! But it's worth playing around with if you've got it - different people enjoy different methods so you might find it useful 😊
Hi
Can we mix with color pencil work & doing soft pastel backgrounds?
Yes, I've seen people do this before! Sometimes there's a bit of a difference between how the texture/sheen looks between the coloured pencil and pastel, so you can try it and see if you like it - it's just personal preference 😊
Hello Kirsty, your video was very helpful to me, because I do have a view pan pastels but not the right colors to mix like you do. I think about it to buy the 20 regular set with the black and white a can make then the tint and the tones and the darks. I use them for my underpainting too. Although Sometimes I make my underpainting with the Faber Castel Albrecht dürer too. But...My struggle is, losing my reference drawing beneed the pan pastels or underpainting... do you have an advise for this?
The 20 set of the pure/painting colours is perfect to be able to mix any colour you need, easily!
When I do the base layer with pan pastels, I do it really lightly so I can add more pastel pastel pencil on top.. Because I'm using it so lightly, the paper still shows through in a lot of places and I tend to block in the sections between the outlines, and not go over the top of the outlines if I can help it
Usually I don't put pan pastel in any intricate areas either, I just go straight in with pastel pencil
I'm not sure if that makes sense but if you watch any of my other pastel videos, you can see the process a bit better 😊
This one is a good example
ruclips.net/video/QN6cj41r1cc/видео.html
I just bought some pastelmat and when I was trying it out I realized that its really difficult to layer even washes of color with pastel sticks and I think pan pastels would be amazing for that since it grips pastel really well but the blend doesnt extend much so doing some research
Yes Pan Pastels are amazing for that because you can control how much pastel you are laying down! So you can add a very small amount and it blends smoothly and evenly 😊
helllooooo i want to do it , i think pastel ilustration are underrated , its so sad
I think so too! It's a lovely medium 😊
Great tutorial. Thanks for sharing. Do you use any fixative? And what paper are you using for mixing colors?
Thank you 😊
No I don't use fixative because it's not necessary for the techniques I use, and it can alter colours/ruin pieces etc
I'm just using printer paper for mixing colours
@@KirstyRebeccaFineArt thank you, I was worried about dangers of fixative even to spray outdoors, I believe people should wear special masks too. I loved the way you store your art work. Great tip 👌
This was very helpful and well explained. It convinced me to start with the basic set! I'm wondering if it's possible to split the colours in different containers and blend? Like creating your own second colours not to have to blend every time?
Thankyou 😊
I haven't tried, but I could imagine it would be quite difficult as you would have to "set" the pans again (I would have no idea how to do that!)
@@KirstyRebeccaFineArt I've seen people on RUclips setting broken pan pastel with alcohol?! I don't really know what I'm doing though and risk ruining my precious basic colours 😅
This video is incredible are you on skillshare or virtual instructor? Or I’m going to look at ur Patreon if u have one
I'm glad you liked it 😊
I am not on Skillshare/virtual instructor but I do have a Patreon!
www.kirstyrebeccafineart.com/patreon-longer-in-depth-tutorials 😊
What fixative do you recommend? Would the fixative for charcoal also work for pan-pastel? Thank you.
I don't actually use fixative for pastels 😊
With the supplies and techniques I use, it's not necessary
Also, fixatives tends to cause more problems than they solve (most pastel artists will say the same thing!)
Also they are very toxic. I use a little hairspray when my paper isn’t good.
Is $155 a good price for lightly used 53 colors and a bunch of aofft tools???
It depends which country you live in!
I am in Australia so Pan Pastels are more expensive, so it depends whether you're talking about Canadian, American, Australian dollars etc
There is a list of physical/online stores that sell Pan Pastels on their website here;
panpastel.com/buy.html
You can check to see what it would cost to purchase the same amount from an online store near you and compare 😊
I. Make. My. Own. Softool
I have the hardest time getting my pan pastel background to be smooth and even as I see so many artists do. Any suggestions?
Could be a couple of reasons,
Are you using Pastelmat?
If not, I recommend trying it - it's completely different from any other surface
And if you are, then you probably just need a few more layers 😊
@@KirstyRebeccaFineArt thank you. Love your channel.
Can pan pastels be erased with normal erasers?
Yes, technically it does, but it also depends on which paper you are using!
If you used a smooth paper, it would erase completely (almost back to the white of the paper)
But if you work on Pastelmat (which is the only paper I recommend) it is harder to erase and it doesn't quite go back to the colour of the paper. If you make a mistake, you can use a kneaded eraser to "press and lift" enough pastel off to be able to cover that area with more pastel again 😊
Hope that helps!
A D#demo on HOW to blend rather than, "These are the posibilities of blending" would be helpful. This one starts at chapter two and is not much use for a beginner, sorry.
Hi Gordon,
Yes, at the start I talk about different ways you can blend Pan Pastel, but about 3 minutes into the video, I show you how you can blend your colours to create 2 different landscapes.
This tutorial wasn't to teach beginner's about colour theory or what colours you need to blend to make certain colours, it was to show you that you can actually blend Pan Pastels to create any colour you want, unlike other types of pastels
If you wanted a tutorial that is specifically for beginners, I have plenty of tutorials using Pan Pastels.

Hello, thank you for these links. I dropped out of art school in 1968. I didn't think I was any good, inspite of the tutors very kind comments. I'm 72 now. At the start of this year, I decided to try painting once more. I have surprised myself by producing some "reasonable" results. I'm now starting witht the most scary medium for me - pastels. I stayed well away from them, due to my ability to smudge everything into a grey mess. I was ashamed and left art school. By the way, I had no desire to be offensive, I hope I didn't upset you.
You're welcome 😊
It's okay, I wasn't offended! I just thought I'd share the tutorials that you might find useful instead
I never really understood pastels either and found them very messy when I first started, but then I discovered other ways that you can work with them (like Pan Pastels and pastel pencils) which can be a lot less messy and easier to work with!
I use these supplies in most of my pastel tutorials now and only use the pastel sticks occasionally because they tend to be very messy and hard to control!
So hopefully some of my other videos will help you out on your pastel journey 😊
