  • Just months until the Rugby World Cup, and it looks like South Africa might be back on track. After slipping to a worst-ever rankings placement in 2017, South Africa struck back last year by beating the top two in those rankings, and warning the world what may lay in wait in Japan. So what went wrong in the first place, how are South Africa shaping up, and what chance do they have of taking the trophy in a few months time?

I remember Gareth Edwards once gave an interview before the 2009 Lions tour to S.A. He said this : "After the bashing the Lions received in 2005 I travelled with Bob Norster (Cardiff chief executive) to see their first game of that season's Tri-Nations. We'd all left New Zealand wondering who was going to beat the All Blacks, thinking that they were the greatest side we'd ever seen. Well, in Cape Town that day South Africa knocked lumps out of New Zealand.
To say they lacked skill would do them an injustice, but they gave them a real old walloping. Tana Umaga was knocked off his feet, Danny Carter didn't know which day it was. To be there and see it in the flesh was almost frightening. I can't imagine a British team doing that too often."
Buckle up, the boks might win it for a third time.

To be fair to Alistar Coetzee, it was always a tug of war between him, the government & trade unions who was going to pick the team. He was only focused 25% on coaching... the other 75% was fending off the "I know betters". He was doomed before he played his 1st game.

Aussies and England despise them but can't deny what they are capable of and what they have achieved
France - Capable to beat any team on any day but mostly inconsistent
Ireland - Tough as nails and very tenacious,
Wales - Very underated and wrongfully underestimated
Scotland - Capable to beat the big teams but never seem to get it together on the day.

Papier can't hold a candle to Faf De clerk but cobus reinach can. If selected, reinach gives the boks a different option from de clerk, offering more pace and can put more pressure on the opposition scrum half. Reinach has made a name for himself all season for Northampton by rushing the opposition distributer and scoring an interception try. With De clerks excellent game management for the fist 60 and reinachs aggressive pressure for the final 20, South Africa might have the best combination of scrum Half's at the world cup.

    • @Karma-qt4ji
      @Karma-qt4ji 5 лет назад +4

@@llewellynlamb9545 Firstly, the quota system is an abomination, no question about it. But I disagree with your sentiment because some white fans will always complain about the inclusion of black players due to the fact that the merit issue is subjective and there is still a very real underlying racial tension and a belief that black people should "stick to soccer".
Let's be completely honest here, there is more to historical rugby selections than just the quota system and coaches like Heyneke Meyer were so obviously averse to black inclusion that they were prepared to go to extraordinary lengths to prevent it. Not one single black player able to crack the regular starting lineup in 4 years?!? On debut, Siya Kolisi outshone Pierre Spies, Marcel Coetzee and Arno Botha and went on to be awarded the Man of the Match. He was dropped. If he was white, we would be losing our shit, but it is scary how few people actually even noticed the fact.
History shows that we fans do not want merit selections unless we approve of the player. For instance, if a SA player is sitting third on the overall list of SR line breaks (behind 2 Kiwis) and 2nd on the SA list of try scorers, then he should warrant selection into the Bok squad; agree? But when his name is Courtnal Skosaan he is labelled a "quota" with typical venomous hatred and a list of "better" white players is discussed on forums such as this. He didn't work out at international level, but plenty of white boys have failed too - it certainly isn't because he didn't deserve the chance.
At the same time, Elton Jantjes was the form fly half in SA. Pollard and Lambie were both out injured, so who else was there? Get's selected; "QUOTA!!!!!!" and is the ONLY player who is still being judged on his lack of performance under AC - as though the rest of the team were brilliant..... He is still called a quota player on every forum you look at, but the only fly half in the country who is as good as him at the moment is Curwin Bosch, another player of colour (I discounted Pollard because he is still Springbok number 1 fly half). Why would a player of colour be politically selected by the quota system at the expense of another player of colour?!? Can't argue that point with the "stick to soccer" crowd because logic confuses them. Ackerman played Jantjes almost every minute of every game for how many years, when he didn't have to - surely if Ackerman has that amount of faith in him then he has to be worth more than a shitty haircut?
Forgive the long tirade, but I am done with people who call for players to be selected on merit, but move the goal posts the minute the selected player is not who they wanted it to be. This video shows what we did to the All Blacks in Wellington; they ALL did that and not one single player played as a passenger. The "stick to soccer" crowd can not point at any player and say, "we would have done better without him" because it simply would not be true and even they know that.

I guess our fall and humiliation of Brighton and the 2016-17 era was a very useful lesson learnt. It enabled us to realise, like the All Blacks, you cannot rely on reputation alone, you have to earn it if you want it. Ah, my team the Springboks, showed that no matter what level they fall to, they know how to pull each other up and win the World Cup. Well done guys. I also would say that it seems that since both the All Blacks and the Springboks have in recent years been shown to be somewhat less superhuman teams it still says something when you consider they have both won 3 Rugby World Cup titles each. Well done Kiwis and Springboks.

I urge anyone watching this to watch the Sale Sharks with Faf De Klerk if you want truly mental rugby. A team of bastards, that at times can play some of the best rugby imaginable and then seemingly just say sack it I CBA with all this game management bollocks and just go mad. Games such as the 30-29 victory over Harlequins and our 46-41 victory in our final games of the season against Gloucester illustrates this perfectly. We can go from beating Saracens one week to getting beat by Newcastle the next. Great fun to watch. Just be careful if you've got a dodgy heart. I'm convinced my life has been shortened significantly by all the heart attacks I've had supporting them.

  • @heinrichbock1683

That Japan Game is gonna follow us to the eventual heat death of the universe as the beginning of the the worst period in Springbok Rugby.
Couple of notes I wanted to make after watching this vid.
    1. Faf de Klerk is a huge infleunce on our game and his ability to read the game as well as he does is an emense help for a team that was as you said "crash bang wallop"
2, Kolisi was the best man Rassi could have chosen for a couple of reasons. Firstly he is a brilliant player, Secondly he's a good captain, Doesnt just wear the armband but leads from the front like he should, Thirdly, and im gonna cop a lot of flak for this, he's black and with the way our political situation in the country as a whole is going right now this was a good move by Rassie to keep the "qouta" pushers off his back (He's not a qouta player just fyi) (Also us nerds should stay out of politic's :P)
3, the mass exodus of players overs seas is because, to be frank, playing rugby in south Africa is not as profitable as in Europe and now with the contract cuts it's gonna get worse.
4, In 2006 we lost 7 of the 13 games we played and then went on to loose the then tri-nations in 2007 winning only 1 game against Australia, and then went on to win the 2007 World Cup, and in 2009 hold every single trophy we were eligible for at one time. Skeptics beware.
5, Lastly, This year we have a good mix of old and newer players and some major quality to choose from and there are a number of players that are going to be pushing for positions in the squad.
I think this could be the year for a return to form and Rassie is actually in the best place any coach could be in as far as i see it. he's only been in charge for a short while and the state of his squad is in question but he has the talent to choose from and a record of being the under dogs (compared to NZ and the Europeans).
