7-1 is going to be less common going forward. If we go 7-1, the opposition goes in with the intent to injure. The ABs did this in the final, the Irish in the second test. It’s their way of "levelling the playing field." Edit: Just to explain a bit further. The Boks basically invented a massive tactical advantage which no teams at present can match, to bulldozer teams in the endgame. Imagine this, you’re a fifteen man squad, that basically plays the whole game, I.e., the old way. You’re an elite athlete but you give everything on the pitch and in the last 20min there is a decline of what even the elite athlete is capable of in a physically gruelling sport. But this side, SA, can files a completely new f-ing pack, which is as good as the first, if not better because they’re end game specialists, closers. You stand no chance, you cannot match them for the full eighty, the new strategy is game breaking. This is your country, your pride, and you have no way of beating them at their own game. So what do you do? What a smaller army has always done against a overwhelming force: guerilla warfare. You ambush a tank like Marx or Bongi or a defensive miracle like Kriel. Ok. Maybe the metaphor has gone to far. Regardless you decide to level the playing field. Here’s the logic. The Boks have a powerful bench, By forcing early substitutions early you take the impact out of the bench. The weakness of the 7-1 is that it’s a risk of backline players get injured, you’re out of luck. So to turn the advantage into a disaster, you tackle someone in the head…I mean, you turn it on its head. I’m so doing you send a message, you can go 7-1, but don’t be surprised if you have a shorter playing career. It’s effective, it equalises, and it deters going forward. Not only is this plausible, but anyone who knows rugby knows this is old school. And the fact is that it happened for anyone with eyes to see. Frizzell on Bongi, Cane on Kriel, and Smith on Colbe (you missed that one didn’t you?). And just in case you thought you imagined it, Ireland do the exact same thing in test two, but better. The exact same thing down to the move on Marx, targeting the leg. As well as affecting a bunch of early subs. Now, while there are naive people who think all refs play it fair, and all players are saints, and all journalists are honest. It was certainly clear to Ireland what the ABs were doing in the final, because they did the same thing, with better results. They probably talked about it at the pub over beers.
