As a veteran, “survivor mode” simply becomes the presetting, coping mechanism when you’ve experienced enough in life to know the everything is unstable, & can change instantly, in the blink of an eye.

Thanks for this, because I don’t resonate with having been through ab*se (thankfully) but I moved a lot as a child and didn’t feel my emotional needs met and I’ve ended up with being told by a doctor that I’ve been in a state of constant tension for so long that that’s why now it’s affecting my daily life so much. I resonate with the “survival mode” as in I was and am always aware and ready to fight or flight in a sense which kept making me exhausted and now can even impact me physically even if I’m already aware of this and taking the steps to live more calmly

i think the key there is to learn how to be content with that reality. Know how to deal with it and still find peace. War and violence scars the soul. It takes alot of meditation, work, and help/understanding from others for you to truly start healing.

if its any help, i found that a little time just doing absolutely nothing helps me a lot. 5 or 10 mins a day lets me turn off my brain and makes it easier to deal with life. im not saying go for a walk, or ride a bike. im saying, turn off everything. phone, music, tv. and just lay there for 5 or 10 or even 15 minutes.

One of the issues of "survival mode" with me is transforming from someone who was super emotional and in touch with my feelings, to going through a surge of traumatic experiences within a months span; thus, causing me to feel nothing. At all.
With the numbness and constant "gotta do this. Okay done. Next thing. Okay, done. Sleep. Okay done. Drive. Okay done." Etc.
I went from having extreme existential anxiety to feeling zero fear. From codependent to independently reckless. With no care of the world or any care to whatever may happen.
This almost makes me feel alienated in my own body. I'm entirely numb and I cannot get out of it. However I'm getting so much done, for once. Though all this work doesn't change the way I perceive myself. It's just shifted how my walls have risen and not even my own self can understand what's going on behind them.
Sorry if this doesn't make ANY sense, I'm just rambling. Thanks for these videos.

Adding to the ignoring your basic needs part, I think it's important to make note that for those of us that came from traumatic situations as children, we did not choose to ignore our basic needs, that was already happening from our caregivers and so what that informed us was that we did not deserve to have those basic needs met or if they were met every once in awhile we should be falling to our knees and being so grateful. Also for people that have been in domestic violence situations where you are being abused and controlled, it's not so easy trying to figure out how to meet your basic needs because that may require you to ask your abuser for permission say to take a long bath or money to buy much needed hair products so there's a lot of gray area that goes into this that people don't consider.

I've been trapped in survival mode for the past year and a half. Moved into a situation that reminds me way too much of my childhood home, and my relationship turned emotionally abusive. Writing a cover letter and getting a job has felt like a herculean task lately and I can't shake the constant feeling of dread...Having ADHD on top of this is really unhelpful, since all that feels safe to do is chase dopamine all day.

The modern world definitely has distorted "danger." Just last night, I was big dumb and did something I myself am constantly warning other people not to do. I approached an unknown animal that I was only like 60% sure was a dog. You should never approach a wild animal OR a strange dog, and yet there I was. My brain will recognize other humans, people I've known for years, as threats even though I know they aren't, but doesn't have the same immediate response with wild animals, environmental hazards, or even moving vehicles, even though I consciously know that any of those things could kill me. I'm more frightened of everyday occurrences like talking to strangers than I am of stuff that could eat me.

    • @marilynlucero9363
      @marilynlucero9363 2 года назад +29

That's because people have proven way too often that they can be as savage, if not worse even than Wild Animals.
I don't trust humans either and am more likely to approach a wild Tiger for a hug rather than a Human stranger.
It is quite sad the world has come to this too but Humanity has no one to blame but themselves.

As a wrangler (who specialized in snakes) I've always been RESCUING the animals from the people, even when the people were the ones who called for "help" and paid me at the end of the day...
Even when I was wrestling with a line attached to a treble hook... that was in turn attached to about 1000 pounds of alligator or crocodile (thanks exotic trade...btw)... I was still "saving" the 1000 pound crocodile or alligator from the humans, and NOT the other way around.
AND tigers CAN give THE BEST hugs!!! (No, I don't recommend approaching them in the wild... and I highly advise YOU GET THE TRAINING FIRST!!!) but I'm just sayin'...

I spend the vast majority of my free time trying to sink my focus into shows, games, stories, anything to take up my time and probably keep my focus off my worries, even though I hardly enjoy anything anymore. it's something I feel compelled to do even when I don't want to, like just sitting here and doing nothing would be terrible for some reason. my brain has been in survival mode so long it's trying to stay out of the moment as much as possible because it doesn't even want to handle that anymore.

Hey, thank you for posting this.
I've always felt that I was in Survival mode since 2nd year of Junior High School. I'm in my last year and my last exams for the first sem are coming up tomorrow and it's REALLY, really bothering me.
This video and the comment section really helped me to realize what I am going through and how to deal with it. It's also comforting to know that people are experiencing similar things as me and are also working towards dealing with things in a healthier way.
Again, thank you Psych2Go and everyone who's viewing this comment. I hope you have a wonderful day.

I had this feeling throughout my second year in university, but instead of being "washed up" by life, I felt that I just can't afford to relax, like you're in a heightened state of alert, but it's not bad. If I'll try to describe it, it feels like you're looking for problems in your life and you can't rest until you've solved them all.

Honestly, College takes it out of you. It really pushes your limits. It's hard! So rest is essential since you are constantly forcing new information into your brain. It needs time to rest and process everything. So make sure you sleep, spend time away from the screens, attend therapy or meditate, move your body (doesn't have to be intense), and make nourishing food when you can. It's soo important to focus on caring for yourself outside of school and work.

I've something very simlar to this.
Suffering of generic anxiety disorder, I'm currently under therapy, which helps, but there are highs and lows.
What I recognize myself the most, are the costant feeling of exhaustion and the "alert mode". My brain is always on alert, like there's some danger lurking around the corner. Even when I relax, the brain is still in alert mode, so I don't really relax: when I get back to work after a weekend, I'm still tired. Going out doesn't help, brain is still in alert mode, all the time. I hope I can turn off this stupid alarm ringing all the time!

Watching this made some light bulbs go off; I'm in a rough situation that isn't entirely involving me in every way but still affects me. And every day, I feel exhausted no matter how much I sleep; I feel like a zombie every day, just working and then going to bed because I'm too exhausted. I've tried breathing, moving around, and everything recommended by my therapist, but it sucks.
I can't get out of the house because I work from home; I slip back into survivor mode at the first hint of upset in the place. It's like a crushing weight on my creativity and energy that's being sapped. If I didn't have to stay here everyday to do work, I would go out more and this conflict is making me question whether it's worth trying to keep going with this job. But I need the job in order to move out, if I don't have money, I won't make it to the goal I've set for myself.

Being abused by a narcissist and their agents is a completely different situation, and it's never taken seriously by professionals. The former is a crime. The latter is abuse that isn't taken seriously.

I've been in freeze or submit mode all my life, few exceptions, like relationships. All of the relationships were good, until they wasn't.
At least now I understand why was I always looking for a partner until the last breakup, where I decided I won't ever do it again before I fix myself, since all the breakups for the last 10 years were ultimately caused by me not having anything that would make me financially stable in my life, which is fair and realistic, but ever since then (4-5 years don't even know anymore) I still couldn't get it together. I've had a job for a while, but then I'm back into doing nothing after I had to quit.

I have been in survival mode for weeks. I didn't think about number one and I think that's a big contributer. I feel pushed to perform in a situation perfectly and it reminds me of past situations from childhood where I had to spend a lot of energy to make sure that I was perfect, too. I wasn't allowed to make mistakes or my parent would become angry and humiliate me. The person in the present situation doesn't get angry, per se, but her agitation is visable and she is highly critical of any and all mistakes that I make. I come home angry and tense and can't seem to leave the scenario even though I've physically left it. The worst part is that this person needs my help. So I can't really just abandon them, even though my body desperately wants me to.

I just started to sob and almost hyperventilate due to something in the movie reminding me of things I'd been through- the highly relating to the scene or character just launched me into a strong emotional release that went on for over an hour. I finally was able to calm down, but I'd never had that response before (and I'd watched that movie in the past, but atm can't recall what it was). I'm highly sensitive and emotional anyways, but this was another level- it certainly was something to do with still being in survival, but I'm a lot better in most other areas- that event just came out of no where. I'm still grateful for the reminder, esp when other ppl don't understand.

Bottom of my heart, thank you.
    Gonna go breathe now~

When my wife passed away it was about 6 months before I came out of survival mode and I'm not fully out of it but what I found helpful was finding one thing just one thing I can do everyday then another accomplished at least one thing and now if I accomplish more I feel better well the easy thing is make the bed and so I try to make my bed every morning I know that sounds so corny and cheesy but it really does make a difference

Good tips of surviving mode explanations. Would be nice if there is a content in navigating and overcoming toxic workplaces or environments, so one can move from survival mode. Many thanks.

I feel like this is EXACTLY what i needed to watch right now. I quieted my job three weeks ago, for a couple of months I got taken advantage and overworked my butt off barely having enough sleep. That kind of inertia sticks with you and sometimes you dont even take notice, no wonder I was feeling like crap. I didnt take any time to just "stop" since as soon as I left I started another project without realizing... well THIS.
Thanks for the video, it... actually helped me o__o

I've been in Survival Mode for almost 2 months now, and it's driving me nuts. I just want to stop, I know LOGICALLY that the danger has long passed, but it's not letting up, and I'm so damn tired. I just want to feel normal again. I worry it'll never end. T___T

I didn't knew survival mode was a thing until i was recommended a video about it a while ago. If i were to go by these points, i've been in survival mode for as long as i remember. It was always the norm, so i still don't know how it feels to relax or feel emotions without being aware of what others will think/say about me.
I still struggle with recognizing what i'm feeling. I don't know when i'm angry, sad, happy or just apathetic at all times.

For me it's always being tired. Not physically, mentally and emotionally. I have my moments, it tends to come and go, but when it hits, it hurts. I can never seem express that in the moment and it always slips my mind when trying to talk to someone about it.
