Michael, your Petrucci settings need some correction, and then it will sound a little more like his. Petrucci used the 2290 for all the delays. Straight from an interview with Mark Snyder back during the Awake era.... Speaking of the 2290......."For his lead sound, John uses two different delays: a 460 millisecond and a 602 millisecond delay with about three repeats. For his crunch, he's got a very short 26-millisecond delay. For reverb we use a Lexicon PCM-70 that runs off one of the loops of the 2290. The clean and lead sounds have a stock big hall reverb that we modified a bit so it's really warm and doesn't have a trashy decay. For the crunch sound, I porgrammed a really small room reverb that gives a little bit of ambience...." -Guitar World November 1994

I haven't owned a regular amp since 1990. I grew up in the era of the big racks and I've always had a rack mounted rig as my gigging/touring setup. I've always wanted one of these units but even back when they came out they were expensive and I could achieve similar results with eh, cheaper units. I still have a bad case of want for one, but mostly as a delay rather than the chorus/pan/tremolo stuff. I think there's far better options for those but the delay is iconic, absolutely brilliant. I used to bring a 20 unit, double sleeved, shock mounted rack and 2 Marshall 4x12 cabs on the road with me but I'm 54 now and I struggle to get myself to the gig let alone a massive rack, so I've downsized considerably. I would find room though for one of these TC units, absolutely.
Cool Demo :-) That must be a great effort with all the different routing!!! I also worked 10 years for TC Electronic so I know the gear very well and still love the 2290.... I think the strength of the signal and the High End is much better than on all the other units. Also I have to admit that the "Free the Tone" Delay Pedal is also close , but...

The original tc electronic 2290 is my main delay unit. Nothing else sounds quite like it or provides the kind of stereo imaging or vibe. I have tried everything that could possibly come close and the closest was using the Axe-Fx II and III, but only after doing a lot of research and getting some deeper insights from another well known Axe-Fx user who was on a similar mission to make it sound like a 2290. He and his tech friend had done some deep analysis of the preamp in the original unit, which is a huge part of its sound, as well as the delay line itself which is very unique in that it uses a chipset combination and structure unlike any other and has a very unique frequency curve that is far from linear. Our combined thoughts pushing together got us as close as humanly possible to recreating the magic of the 2290, although, I will say that the original unit's texture, tone and the way the delay repeats decay are still not imitable. An alternative to the 2290 that sounds quite good, but falls short due to some heinous oversights in design is the Strymon DIG. Had this pedal included a complete modulation section, as well as a more comprehensive EQ section for the delay lines, as well as a small numerical value readout to dial in the exact time in milliseconds or BPM, this pedal could have been better than the 2290 in some ways. But alas, Strymon have their own agenda to keep things real simple for the user, which is part of their design ethos, post-haste.
Around 5:50 with patch 80, if you put your monitors in mono, there is no sound from the delay. Kind of neat. Same thing with 82 (others too). I know it's out of phase, but I didn't expect it to completely disappear.
18:20 I couldn't agree more. On a side note. The closest thing to the 2290 AFAIK is the Fractal Axe 3. I got both and they are shockingly close. Flashback, and Alter Ego couldn't compete. Anyways, great vid Michael! Always great content!
As you pointed out it is tough playing with delay because a flub is magnified.....that is where I am always in awe of The Edge and his use of delay in his signal chain.....takes the Jeff Beck type of playing where you can't count something off and jump in, you start and just GOOOOOO
Uuuh - all the studio cracks from the mid 80‘s to the 90‘s were using the sde. Landau, Huff, Lukather and many more. Also Gilmour is still using them. The SDE 3000 came out before the 2290. The TC unit has better sound quality for longer delays and was expandable to 10 sec and later on to 60 sec. With the footswitch it was used as a looper a lot.

First time I head a 2290 in person was Lab Sound in Calif in summer of '89......I always like the panning feature of the 2290, but for delays, I kinda prefer the sound of delay with some diffusion on it, to "blur" the repeats a bit.....But the plug-in version you just showed is killer! The 42 sounded glorious too. I dont know if its youtube compression or what but when you plug the 2290 in your amp, it sounds way more amazing than any video demo (even when done by a pro like Michael) , it makes your tone better instantly, its truly amazing in person
If I recall correctly Pat Metheney does/did something similar to Petrucci to widen his sound. Into Delay unit, two outputs. Dry only signal to one amp. Extremely short delay only signal to the other. Chorus like thickening without chorus modulation. I do this with Yngwie's live wall of Marshalls set up. One millisecond added to each head in succession. Huge sound. More is more. My friend Nigel loves it. Plays his violin through it.

The plugin version of this is Uber cool but I'm not a Pro and have very little need for it. I have been getting your recommendations for a while and watch your vids and officially Subscribed after this. Seems like you put in a lot of work and I hope you make some loot from it. The rack unit sounds bigger. The stereo spread is wider sounding. The tails and decay are different. Maybe some tweaking could make the other units sound even closer like you said. Pretty impressive for a old digital rack unit.
Funny you used a riff from "Test for Echo" demoing a Delay :D (i love this song BTW) Anyway the 2290 is awesome sounding and the plugin gets 99% of it, but apart from the pedals (I found the Flashback boring and the FTT nice but a bit darker), all the rack delays sounded pretty close to my ears, at least for a "normal delay" use. I would have been curious to hear a comparison with the Nova delay too. It is highly underrated and IMO way better than the flashback

Excellent insight here on rack hardware. It matches what my conclusions have been over the past few years. The high voltage and headroom of racks just impart sweetness and hugeness to the sound. (I mean, confirmation bias is in play here.) It's less about digital processing horsepower and more about quality analog design. That said, I thought the Flight Time sounded great, all things considered. I think that unless one is a touring professional in many cases, where there is ample vehicle room for modest or larger racks, pedalboards (with pedal delays) are just better for working musicians due to space, cost, and maintenance/fragility concerns. Racks are great for the studio where they can be safe. I know everyone's mileage will vary.

This is my favorite Giant channel that isn't related to Giant or Dann Huff. I worked in a record store in 1989 when Last of the Runaways came out and we played it all the time. I need to practice.
6:00 I thought it did have that 1990 - ‘95 EVH tone. I was thinking, is he gonna play “Amsterdam - VH” ? It would sound good playing those tunes. If you put a flanger on there, it would sound like EVH playing “Cabo Wabo”.
I thought the “Flight Time” delay sounded too weak, and sort of muffled. I think it was the Lexicon, sounded really nice and clear. I love lexicon, I have some Digitech pedals with the Lexicon chip in it and they sound really good. The TC Electronics plug-in sound has just a slight bit less in gain but this could also be the PC compressing something but it really sounds easier on the ears but that is because it’s compressing the highs and false harmonics more. The rack version sounds like it’s “letting it all out”, if you know what I mean. It sounds more articulate, l think that’s the word that I was looking for. We can hear the strings annunciate themselves more. Like EVH on his first 6 albums, on “Intruder” in particular, you can hear the sound of the wood, strings, frets, tremolo, springs, really prominently, more so than any rack that I have ever heard. The TC Electronics and Lexicon are so nice in that respect.
There is no doubt that it IS the best delay ever! Those other boxes sounded great but compared to the 2290 they were flat as a sheet of paper. I have to say that the plugin is dam close.

The 2290 puts a very distinct „krch“ onto the more pronounced pick attacks, the other hardware units less so, and the plugin feels like plastering a sticker version of it onto the signal. Is there a reason to have the input gain of the 290 so low, in the beginning setment?
None of those toys sound minimally close to a TC2290. Why? Because they do not use 1 MHz conversion, because they do not use analog feedback path thru multiple conversions, analog filters and phase inversion nor work at high voltage. Yep, They still don't make them like they use to. The 80's technology/ manufacturing process still rules for vibe IMO. I'm sure it has something to do with the modern age of thinner PCB tracks, and ROHS compliant, lead free soldering, which has degraded the tone slightly. The Free the Tone was pretty close though, and doesn't suffer from noise issues of old power supply capacitors, and scratchy sounding potentiometers, like most the 80's gear suffers from these days. A shame 35 years of tech, hasn't really improved things.

Although I sold my unit 13 years ago I can’t agree more. 2290 sounds full and repeats are organic! I miss it. But can’t justify the price.

You should be able to break a ground loop like that with either a DI box or a Morley/Ebtech Hum Eliminator. But great video as always, anyway. 🤘🏻

So whats the closest thing in pedal form to the 2290 ?
I don't know how close the sound is, but the old TC Nova delay did some of the same things, IIRC.

The 2290 puts a very distinct „krch“ onto the more pronounced pick attacks, the other hardware units less so, and the plugin feels like plastering a sticker version of it onto the signal.
Is there a reason to have the input gain of the 290 so low, in the beginning setment?

None of those toys sound minimally close to a TC2290. Why? Because they do not use 1 MHz conversion, because they do not use analog feedback path thru multiple conversions, analog filters and phase inversion nor work at high voltage. 2290 rack and plug in. Even the flashback sounded good. Not a fan of how the Free The Tone sounded
Yep, They still don't make them like they use to. The 80's technology/ manufacturing process still rules for vibe IMO. I'm sure it has something to do with the modern age of thinner PCB tracks, and ROHS compliant, lead free soldering, which has degraded the tone slightly. The Free the Tone was pretty close though, and doesn't suffer from noise issues of old power supply capacitors, and scratchy sounding potentiometers, like most the 80's gear suffers from these days. A shame 35 years of tech, hasn't really improved things.
