That could be a long list. :) A tc electronic 1210 would be cool (though I do actually prefer the 2290 for chorusing). Great sounding delay and has a lot of versatility. A little too much menu paralysis for your average guitar player. I like simpler stuff with knobs. I'm using the flashback X4. It has a 2290 with modulation on it which gives me the vibe of this pedal but it doesn't get close to all the versatility. In my opinion, this new version of the TC Electronic 2290P sounds as good if not better than the old version in the rack. However, technological progress does its job :)
Can hardly tell the difference between rack and pedal Leon, with OD, tiny, bit more top with the pedal, very good price for this unit in the UK, thought it would be more for all the features. 😁👍🎸🔊

This is one of those unobtanium mythical beasts of the 80’s that will likely become impossible to resist. Was that a 2290 on No More Tears? Sounds closer than anything I’ve heard. Also wild how that phase invert projects a phantom image. Kind of spooky! 🤙🏻
The pedal is very close but the rack is still the king imho. The resolution and articulation of the rack seem a bit better in the test at the end. There is a bit of magic in those old 2290 units which is why they still command so much money.
Great demo as always. From your clips at the end, the rack does seem to still impart a little more dimension to the sound, but there are definite similarities to be sure - perhaps it was the vintage crustiness. ;) I may have misunderstood a couple of things, so please correct me if I am wrong: You mentioned that the rack could not do deep modulation. It can. Not as obviously or as easily, however. You have to enable it via spec no 103. Of course, your comment could still be correct in that the pedal still might be "deeper". The other comment that I may have misunderstood was regarding tap tempo. The Learn button on the rack is effectively a tap tempo, albeit not on a pedal (although tc electronic did have the 0144 foot controller for the 2290 which did offer learn buttons). Other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed your demo and review.
Ah yep you're right about the "deep" mod mode being one of the many "secret features" of the 2290. Time for me to re-read the manual! Regarding tap tempo, I should have clarified that there's a dedicated set of rhythmic subdvisions.
@@LeonTodd, Yeah, dedicated rhythmic subdivisions were not a thing back then. But, we did manage to tweak the delay time until we got it to sound right. :)
Thanks again for a great in depth overview. I think I’ll put this on my long term list. I’m a sucker for delays and although I’d like to have this at some point it’s just not a priority right now
I never owned a 2290, but I did play through them in a studio several times. This pedal makes me want to get one and try it out in my W/D/W rig. I think an interesting comparison would be to put this pedal against the Roland SDE3000EVH pedal and see how they compare in terms of tone, performance and ease of use.
They both did a pretty bang on job of recreating the workflow of the originals. The BOSS expands on the original by turning it into a true dual delay, which I wouldn't have minded with this. 2290 Chorus and delay from the one unit would have been awesome!
I have both and the SDE EVH pedal is an amazing dual delay platform where the 2290p is a single delay with more panning and modulation options. The other differences are the SDE EVH has more Routing Options and the Noise Suppression Circuit. I love both formats for obvious reasons and would hate to have to choose between them as only having one delay which is why I have 4 delays on my board. The others are a Strymon Timeline and a Free the Tone Future Factory that Uncle Leon mentioned in this Vid!!
@@LeonTodd Thanks Leon! That's very helpful. The TC 2290 had the most pristine sounds as I remember it from the studio sessions I did with it. I never used the chorus in it as I recall because they also had the TC 1210 when I wanted to put some chorus on my guitar. That was another fantastic rack processor for chorus and flange back then. I do agree though, it would have been awesome to have dual delays in this one pedal.
@@MrSpike7590 Thank you for the feedback! Personally, I wouldn't have any use for four delays in my rigs, but a dual delay for stereo effects would be ideal for me. As I mentioned to Leon, the 2290 had the most pristine effect on the original sound of any delay I've ever used, because all the others, including the Roland delays, did color the sound to some degree. Playing a stereo rig has been a lot of fun for me for several decades now, but I'm really liking the center channel with no effects at all these days. It just sounds better to my ears now overall. So, it comes down to this; Boss SDE, or two 2290 pedals? Hmmm.
I too am wondering this since The Edge did replace his 2290s with the Axe FX and Bradshaw said they couldn’t tell the difference. I can’t wait for that comparison video Leon! 😜
Great job, Leon. Very inspiring device and playing. At the end you mentioned some pedals that have similar functions. For those of us wedded to our computers, do you know of any apps or software packages that bring similar sounds inside-the-box? Thank you for all you do, and g'day.
Hello there! Thanks for tuning in. Some of the best coffee I have ever had was when I visited Bear Pond Espresso in Tokyo. Fond memories and I hope to return soon!
Leon! Always with killer demos and play-thrus! Now that you've probably had a good bit of time with this and the Boss SDD, which do you think is the best bet? As far as tones (the best part), features and such?
I remember LUSTING for anything TC Electronic.....pedal, rack....back in '89 I picked up the wonderful TC Chorus pedal...never cared about any other chorus after that. At the same time I got the TC Sustain-Parametric Pedal, and never needed or wanted any other compressor...that was back in the day when TC was still based in Denmark.....now that it's owned by Behringer(sp?), I hope the quality is still high......I wish they would reissue the whole line of TC's pedals....maybe make a smaller pedal size delay....something more straightforward and simple......
Hi,Leon, very nice demo!thanks. I want "VS demo"with timeline. I'm interested in your feeling about timeline and 2290. I love your riff of heaven above. Whenever I grab my guitar, I play it every times. anyway, No one show me enough demo about this pedal which is playing with heavy drive lead sound and delay on RUclips but you did it. I want to scream "nice work!!" to you.
@@LeonTodd Thanks,Leon. Please take it eazy if you don't have timeline now. bytheway,About rack and pedal, rack had more clear presence,I felt. Though these differences are very small. I just wait your new clips!I'm rooting for you!
The rack demo samples definitely sound brighter than the comparative pedal samples. Are there any input variations or setting differences that might explain / counter this anomaly ?
Rack / pedal is a bit night n day on the clean. I think the dirt tones hide it a bit, but there is some more dynamics on the top, some sparkle in the rack. I would be curious to see if a dynamic eq on the high mids set to expander might get you 99% of the way there. Spiff or FabQ3. Otherwise, a pedal 2290 is worth 4 on the floor . Was signal chain straight insert or gtr -> pedal > axe fx?
There's quite a few companies reissuing their own or other rack classics - BOSS DC-2w and SDE-3000, Eventide Micropitch/Tricerachorus/Blackhole, UA Golden (Lexicon 224 model) and TC with this
I guess it is it's built in overdrive distortions along with all the delays chorus modulations so you don't have to rig up separate pedals for overdrives I'm presuming
Great video - I always wanted a 2290 back in the day, but they were simply too expensive… and now they are just too old and unreliable. I know I’m probably the odd man out here… but why not release this thing as a rack unit as well? I’d grab one!
If you want the closest thing you can get to the real 2290 as a pedal, get this. If you want something that takes that template but changes it up a little and can do dual delays, FF
I just got the EVH SDE3000,and I have an AxeFXIII,so I need another delay like I need a hole in the head, but it’s a 2290!!…back in the 80’s a 2290 was my dream piece of gear…I thought the pedal held up well against the rack…Close enough for Rock and Roll..
Some incorrect info here. The DEEP MODULATION is an original feature of the rack unit. Fron OS V28.xx TC implemented a deeper modulation ratio as requested by many users; the original ratio was very gentle and didn't allow for the type of modulation guitarists were going for in the '80s. And no... modern technology is not really making the modulation depth better or more advanced. It's actually the opposite. Old delays used sample rate modulation so an ANALOG oscillator (LFO) would change the microvoltage of the converters to shift the sample rate. That was causing the detuning efx. Some delays can get extremely wild at that, namely the Lexicon PCM42. You can't do this with current algorithmic tech... so modulation doesn't sound as deep as back then.
@@jupjuck And it's better be like that! For a new product claiming to be the same as one of the most important and unique delays ever made. Analog technology in early digital audio is not a minor detail. It's actually the main reason why those wonders have that kind of sound you can't get from current tech.
Different animals - the SDE is a dual delay so you can do some interesting spatial and rhythmic things with it, whereas this is more of a modern recreation of the old rack.
What's a classic rack you'd like to see reissued as a pedal?
Great video Leon! I think Eventide should do a H3000 pedal (complete with the Filter Delays) - with that shiny blue finish
DBX 160

MXR Doubler…

I remember LUSTING for anything TC Electronic.....pedal, rack....back in '89 I picked up the wonderful TC Chorus pedal...never cared about any other chorus after that. At the same time I got the TC Sustain-Parametric Pedal, and never needed or wanted any other compressor...that was back in the day when TC was still based in Denmark.....now that it's owned by Behringer(sp?), I hope the quality is still high......I wish they would reissue the whole line of TC's pedals....maybe make a smaller pedal size delay....something more straightforward and simple......
Still based in Denmark🤟🏼
@@TrebbienGuitarGreat to know!!!!
Are you going thru an amp or modelor? Are you using 4CM?
Hi,Leon,very nice demo!thanks.
Thanks mate! I need to borrow another timeline soon
@@LeonTodd
Thanks,Leon. Please take it eazy if you don't have timeline now.
bytheway,About rack and pedal, rack had more clear presence,I felt.
Though these differences are very small.
I just wait your new clips!I'm rooting for you!
I feel like there is a little boost in the highs in the rack version.
Can confirm my 2290 hypes the highs from around 10k
I don’t care what it sounds like. I just want that glowing on my desk. Lol
there's a great sale going on for TC Electronic plugins
The rack demo samples definitely sound brighter than the comparative pedal samples. Are there any input variations or setting differences that might explain / counter this anomaly ?
I've measured the frequency response of my 2290 and it's mostly flat except for the 10k range, so I imagine that accounts for the differences
Was signal chain straight insert or gtr -> pedal > axe fx?
gtr - axe-fx - pedal in loop
0,7 is your favourite because it is the speed on Symphonic 😀
THIS
Big question is, this or boss sde 3000?
😂 the little protection cover is weird but handy! Do you think this will be a new trend? Turning classic rack stuff into pedals?
There's quite a few companies reissuing their own or other rack classics - BOSS DC-2w and SDE-3000, Eventide Micropitch/Tricerachorus/Blackhole, UA Golden (Lexicon 224 model) and TC with this
@@LeonTodddon’t forget, Korg put their classic SDD 3000 in a pedal quite a few years ago.
Could you do a series call something like “cool old pedals” ?; review legacy pedals on the hunt for a good tone on a budget ….
That's more or less my "great or garbage" series
Lush and luxuriant. The interface looks to be a bit of a challenge compared to some, but I think the rewards are worth it.
It's an acquired taste hey :p
what is that riff at 2.30 please it's awesome
Ragdoll - Heaven Above
thanks awesome@@LeonTodd
Great design, great sounding.
But I think is just a little bit behind the Flight Time by Free the Tone, isn’t it?
Flight Time is mono. Future factory does some similar stuff but is it's own thing compared to the 2290.
@@LeonTodd yeah, FT is mono.
My setup is mono too, so I don’t which one to pick
I guess it is it's built in overdrive distortions along with all the delays chorus modulations so you don't have to rig up separate pedals for overdrives I'm presuming
All the drive was external
The rack sound better, brighter and a little less dull, but man pretty close
Leon! What's the riff you play when you start playing with the flanger sounds?
"I'm Buzzed" by Michael Landau :)
@@LeonTodd ahhhh thank you!!
Hey Man.. i think in the pedal can dell' the time Whit more chorus about rack.. or not ?
Thk u
Hey @LeonTodd I have the Boss Space Echo RE-202. Do you think this would be better? Thanks! 😎👍
Great video - I always wanted a 2290 back in the day, but they were simply too expensive… and now they are just too old and unreliable. I know I’m probably the odd man out here… but why not release this thing as a rack unit as well? I’d grab one!
Kinda like how Klark Teknik (also owned by behringer) have the Roland SDD320 recreation!
@@LeonToddIndeed… However, having heard the Klark and the Dimension back to back, they are rather different beasts.
Oh, it sounds awesome and would nicely complement my board. BTW, for the life of me, I can't remember what the riff at 2:50 is...
Ragdoll, Heaven Above :D
@@itnefer4787 Jesus on a skateboard!!! Don’t you know anything?
Hey Leon, I have a question for you, as I am looking to buy either this pedal or the Free the tone future factory for a 2290 style Delay?
If you want the closest thing you can get to the real 2290 as a pedal, get this. If you want something that takes that template but changes it up a little and can do dual delays, FF
@@LeonTodd That's what I'm talking about! Thank you! I want the dual delays. You are awesome!
Aww yeah.
its 90% of the rack... but i think nova delay IB will be 99% of this pedal, would you mind comparing they both?
I just got the EVH SDE3000,and I have an AxeFXIII,so I need another delay like I need a hole in the head, but it’s a 2290!!…back in the 80’s a 2290 was my dream piece of gear…I thought the pedal held up well against the rack…Close enough for Rock and Roll..
Yeah and that layput with the buttons is super fun!
It makes me think it would be great if you could try the D Two from TC. I always felt it may be a hidden treasure
Been trying to find one for a decent price for a while now!
@@LeonTodd easy to find around here for 100 to 200 €, I admit it might be more complicated outside EU
We're through the looking glass here people!!!!
@@jupjuck And it's better be like that! For a new product claiming to be the same as one of the most important and unique delays ever made. Analog technology in early digital audio is not a minor detail. It's actually the main reason why those wonders have that kind of sound you can't get from current tech.
I badly need a good delay for big rock solo. Please advise for I'm confused of all the delay pedals demo on RUclips and can't make up my mind.
Spend a little - BOSS DD-8
Spend a little more - Strymon BRIG
Spend a bit more - 2290P, Strymon DIG, Source Audio Nemesis
@@LeonTodd Thanks!🙏 I really dig a lot of what you do!
wish song is this? from Michael Landeau I love it, can't find the song, cool riff
"I'm Buzzed"
HEY LEON, OFF TOPIC BUT ARE YOU PLAYING SYDNEY GLAMFEST 24!?!?!?!
Just Melbourne unfortunately
Is this the only delay pedal that does ducking? If so I’m in!
There's plenty of delay pedals that offer a ducked delay mode, but very few give you such granular control
I like quack delays over ducks unless they got a Sylvester delay
Nice, I can have my 2290 back.
How would you say this compares with the Boss SDE-3000 EVH?
Different animals - the SDE is a dual delay so you can do some interesting spatial and rhythmic things with it, whereas this is more of a modern recreation of the old rack.
@@LeonTodd thanks. That’s the gist I am getting, but it’s hard to know without a place to go to and try them myself.
GEP50. SPX90
Very...COOL...COol...cool!!!
