    I love how the set celebrates the ship design itself, not the tragedy. It doesn’t have a break point in half gimmick or come with an iceberg or something. It’s all about this ship’s beauty.

      Actually this set appears to separate at the same location as the expansion joints on the titanic, and the ship separated at the rear expansion joint just behind the third funnel. If you look at the sterns wreckage you will see the massive engines still standing and this model separates at that point. However the small section just under the third funnel was ripped to shreds during separation so you'd have to disassemble this model a little to make it at that point during the sinking. However I completely agree that showing her in all her beauty prior to the sinking is fantastic. I've wanted this set for 30 years and can't wait to get started.

    • @vartanpapazian8342
      @vartanpapazian8342 2 года назад +11

      @@kurdtray Titanic snapped between the 2nd and 3rd funnel, specifically in front of the 3rd, nearly exactly in half and well before the engine blocks. Remember that the stern wreckage had the shell plating sheared off at crush depth and doesn’t accurately represent the break. If the break was internal technically from the rear expansion joints behind the 3rd funnel (I’m not sure that’s exactly where they were but I take your word for it), then there must have been at least 100 feet of shell plating ahead of the break since the visual break was much closer to center ship.
      It seems Lego went out of their way to avoid the exact breaking point by splitting into thirds. I wouldn’t have a particular objection if they did, but I think it’s pretty classy that they didn’t. I think we’ve all made or dreamt of Lego Titanic Mocs and it’s still amazing it exists now 👌

      I mean there is the trumpeter 1/200 model kit that with all the extra details and paints will cost you around half the price, problem is that thing is out of the skill level of most people

    • @belfast4893
      @belfast4893 2 года назад

      @@pietrooliani3251 Actually it would be the other way around.
      The 1/200 Titanic base kit is cheaper than the lego Titanic (around 400 usd vs 629 usd)
      However, like any decent modeller would do, the Pontos set / MK1 / KA detail up set (250-500 usd) will be required. One of those detail up sets alone is already the price of the kit itself.
      So in the end, excluding paint and tools (since it’s 1/200, expect paint cost to be hefty) the price of an accurate trumpeter titanic would far exceed the lego titanic which requires nothing extra.

    I think comparing this set to the "LEGO set with the most pieces" is the wrong way to judge the size of the Titanic. Nearly all of the World Map pieces are just tiny 1x1 round tiles, and not all of them are used in the build, since some are reserved for an alternate build. I think weight should be the real indicator of a set's size, since a set like the Titanic has fewer (but much larger) pieces, which easily outweigh a set like the World Map.

      @@22wabbit So what you are telling me is that the first thing I should know about lego is they are inaccurate and charge ridiculous price for it ? Lego technic sets seems to a much better investment…
      I’ve seen people done scratch-builds with lego of ocean liners at a SIMILaR scale to this Titanic. Let’s just say the scratch builds ones are much more accurate than this official set. The lifeboats davits look much better, the bottom hull is in a kids more accuracy’s shape. Same material, but result is day and night…
      But you are right about one thing, if you plan on buying this set just for the sake of
      cannibalizing parts to do you own scratch build model, then it might be worth it. Otherwise, in my perspective, it would be a waste of money to get a inaccurate looking model.

    with the ship being able to separate almost where the real ship broke, I'm looking forward to seeing some MOCs of this set where the ship is sinking, as a wreck on the sea floor or hitting the iceberg. I may do a waterline MOC of Titanic hitting the iceberg all housed in a transparent blue plastic enclosure simulating night and the ship illuminated. Fun times ahead

    RIP my wallet
    I think there’s actually 18 lifeboats on this model. It looks like they included the two collapsables that were on the roof of the officer’s quarters. Too bad they didn’t include the two emergency cutters, most models sadly leave them out.

    I will certainly be making some subtle changes including; brown bases to all the cranes & cargo hatches, moving cutters 1&2 outboard & adding in collapsables A&B. brown handrails. rigging the marconi line. Cargo boom hinged to foremast. white star pennant. Grey roof to bridge.

    I found it interesting that they would choose to have the stern section of the build separate to show where the ship's engines are. That's actually where the Titanic broke in two as it sank. If you go and see pictures of Titanic's stern, you'll see Titanic's massive triple expansion steam engines. Aside from that, I'm toying with the idea of buying this set. It would be one massive undertaking for advanced LEGO builders and a challenge, too.

    LEGO models of the past (1960's/70's) have always been rather blocky, rather like pixelated images so, the bigger the model, the less blocky it looks. However, today's 'specialist tiles', which allow smooth surfaces, curves and more complex structures to be achieved, have elevated LEGO from a toy aimed at children, to stimulate their minds and encourage imaginative development and building skills, into something far more permanent. Those first basic brick sets we had, as kids, were purely for 'make a break', and that is the heart of LEGO. Now though, we make a set, and tend to keep it made, unless forced to dismantle it for a specific reason, and no wonder. What a stunning model this is and, even though the Millienium Falcon is also astounding, the Titanic gives us the fact versus the fiction. I'm thinking of buying this next year, but keeping it in its box as I do not have the space for it at present, which is the same reason I haven't built my Star Wars Destroyer yet. I was recently thrilled to receive the Saturn V model, and it nows sits on my window sill (shelf), as its footprint is minimal, but you cannot tell it's a LEGO model, unless you look at it carefully. I'm definitely getting the Lunar Model set soon. Having grown up in the exciting rush of the space age, I would love to see a LEGO Vostok, or Soyuz rocket set, but I won't get greedy. Ok, time to start saving up for my Titanic model in the New Year. I can't wait to get my hands on this gorgeous LEGO set!

    I've just preordered this beast as my partner said she'd treat me to it for a joint Birthday-Christmas present.
    My only recent, as in the last 40 years or so...experience of LEGO is with the Technic 42052 Heavy Lift Helicopter so I may be well out of my depth with this set but as I've muddled through 57 years of life so far I'd hope I can muddle through this also.
    Christmas can't come soon enough for me, to all those who get this set I wish you luck and many hours happy building.

    Great review. I believe the reciprocating steam motors not driving the center propellor is accurate; the center propellor was driven by a steam turbine I seem to recall.

    • @ruffnut1
      @ruffnut1 2 года назад

      Correct. The turbine used the exhaust steam from the main engines.
      But it only worked in forward gear, as no reversing gearbox was fitted.
      So, when the ship went to full astern, after the Iceberg was sighted, only the two outer propellers were actually providing power.

    It looks pretty good, but something seems off. The ship is too narrow, the proportions is not as good as I was hoping for. If you look at the proportions for the real ship, its slightly wider than this.

    • @johanneslarsen8945

      The length/width relation is actually spot on, but the bow is way too narrow and triangular. The upper part is supposed to follow a gradually increasing curve.

    I am curious about the stands that it sits on. How tall is each of those stands? As a Lego collector myself, I always have to think about where the next set will be displayed and I have an area in mind but it isn't tall enough. What is the height of the Titanic without the stands attached? Great review of this kit. I'm excited for it.

I love that everything is printed, I would much rather pay a little more and get printed pieces than save money and get stickers. I don't apply stickers to sets, they peel, go on crooked, wear out, so I would rather not use them.

    7:22 That's because that's how the original Ship was designed!
    The third (or middle-) propeller ran directly from a turbine, driven by the excess steam coming from the two reciprocating engines.
    This is actually very accurate (except the central propeller had 4 blades).

    I hope Lego does more historic ships from the past as sets🙏 Lego could just modify this RMS Titanic set and make her sisters RMS Olympic and HMHS Britannic. A Lego RMS Olympic would be nearly identical except for some positioning of windows.
