- The Minecraft Survival Guide Season 3 continues in Minecraft 1.20.4!
In this tutorial, we take a look at how to build a floating island in Survival Minecraft.
Working from the concept we established in the previous episode, today we build a floating island in a plains valley near my starter base. Creating terrain from scratch can be a challenge, so we explore techniques like wireframing, which can help visualize and map out different parts of a large 3D shape before committing loads of resources to the build.
This is just phase one of the build! We will return to smooth out the rough edges, add detail and shading with different materials, and of course build out the pirate ship and other terrain details on the surface of the island. Stay tuned for more updates to this proejct!
This build is based on an illustration by Greg Fromenteau: www.inprnt.com/gallery/gregfr...

I really like hearing you talk through the process, rather than saying just trust it. Ofc we trust the process but I feel like I learned a lot about why it actually works.
I love how the transition hides him falling in the snow at 3:47
that was definetely left in on purpose
I was about to mention his perfectly cut jump XD
I just rewatched that 3 times because I wasn't sure if that's what was happening 😅
As a Sonic fan, the irony of a man with a vested interest in rare emeralds building a floating island is not lost on me.
When you put your boats on it, it's a FLEETing island
im hurt
I've really been enjoying the more artistic videos this season!
As an engineer I easily get lost in the mechanics of the game and things to "do."
It's nice to see you spending what seems like a lot more time on how to artistically build this season. 😎
Same! And because my brain works the way it does, organic shapes are really hard for me, so this helps greatly
Close to million! Been watching this channel and it's growth from Episode 1 of survival guide season 1!
In my last world I built a floating island with a wizard tower on it. It was a much smaller build than this, but many of the same challenges and techniques applied. I'm terrible at organic shapes, so I started using Minecraft's natural RNG to help by creating perfect circles of stone with dots of moss around the edge that I would bone meal and remove, leaving me with an organic edge to connect to the previous/next layer. This tutorial though was a great explanation of how to do this more manually and with more intent. This will be critical in my current and next floating islands. Thank you so much!!!
The island looks amazing as it is ,Can't wait to see how it looks after the ship is built !!
very much one of those "Trust the process" things
Building a project like this in stages makes a lot of sense. 🤓 I think I'll try that with some of my smaller projects, too. Thanks, Pix!
I know this sounds lame, but I mean it 100%. It blows me away a bit just watching the skill and talent you show in episodes like this. I used to draw when I was a teenager, and I was pretty good at it; but nowhere near being able to do it professionally. People ask me why I program. I tell them “software is the palette I chose to show the world my creativity”.
You, sir, are an artist. And the world is better off with your art in it. It transcends mere traditional art and it’s a unique blend of traditional and modern art with a technological background. And this small trip through your mind is a fun backdrop for how all of that happens.
Sometimes it's weird building on the same world. That exact mound where your mine was is where my Moss farm is. So in my head I feel like it's missing something
Try replacing the outer lines of grass with moss and deepen some spots with it, that will make it feel a lot more natural.
Thanks for the whole lighting process. I noticed after taking over and renovating my new woodland mansion home that the foundation it stands on is a hollow and wanted to know how best to go at lighting up the inside. I'm thinking about making it a giant underground Redstone lab.
I think it would be cool to build an observation deck-tower-thing on top of the hill? something that feels mostly like a control tower or a lookout/oversight station but that ended up with quasi-touristy vibes becuse of the unique view of the ship. it would give you a gteat vantage point to have a more downawards-looking view of the whole ship and island.
Love the idea of an observation tower! Not sure if that's the approach I'll take, but that's a fun idea for sure
@@Pixlriffsif you’ve ever seen the “forbidden ___” board games by Gamewright there’s some fun inspiration for you. Forbidden Island in particular has a cool watchtower design I’d recommend
That's a lot of building but it looks really good. I don't have as good an eye at building like that - love watching this go together.
Fabulous tutorial. So much useful advice on planning, situating and executing a big build project. I’m about to embark on a mega jungle temple rebuild project, and there’s lots of useful techniques here that I can apply.
I’m only halfway through the video, but I would love some dripstone elements on the bottom of the island.
I may convert my mob farm into a floating island… it’s very tempting!
looks awesome!!! it's gunna look awesomer with the other details!!
Thank you so much for providing an easy to understand method for building out the terrain under the island. I've tried to do stuff like this in the past and just couldn't figure out how to do it that didn't make it look like Qbert. I never would've thought of starting from the top and going down.
Seems to me this would have been a great creeper farm, hunker down in the crowd nest and AFK.
Hey Pixl, very nice and very well explained. Thanks Pixl can't wait to see the finished product...cheers
i love how there's a proper way to build something imaginary
Thanks for the vid it's been really useful to get a nice logical way of building and terraforming. It can be quite discouraging when you don't see a level of progress that you expect but this shows that you just have to keep going!!
A couple of things - can you use flowstone for lighting? May look a little more natural??
Also from experience I find I always have to allow myself extra space when building - I always underestimate the amount of room I need
It's amazing because although I started (and gave up after watching yours) my own survival guide. The one thing I love about Minecraft, is that you are constantly learning new things and especially with RUclipsrs, like yourself, you can learn new techniques or ways if building. I would class myself as a very experienced, veteran player but it's nice to see a different approach to building. I love your videos Pix and am grateful to have been introduced to you from the HC9 crossover.
Im building several small floating islands on a server right now, this is really helpful in figuring out the process! I have a love-hate relationship with terraforming so reminding myself through this video on not doing things the frustrating way is nice XD
It’s always a good day working and watching sir Pix minecrafting.
You are inccredddiiiibleeeeeee!!!!!
I think you can even make it hollow inside. Save a lot of stones and can have secret base or storage inside. But that's harder to plan.
Good to hear you!
I heard you talking about this recently, I believe in the Spawn Chunks podcast with Joel, about how you feel like you need to involve a tutorial in every episode which kinda makes it difficult to just build in an episode.
Please don’t feel that way. I have a huge amount of nostalgia for the build projects from s1 of Survival Guide, and I’m sure I’m not alone. I don’t think anyone would mind if you end up taking a similar approach this season too. You have a very educational approach to this series which is great, but ultimately this is a still an LP and we love watching whatever you do, wherever you’re explaining new mechanics or art theory or just building because that’s cool and you’re good at it.
If you read this far, have a good day😊
Pixlriffs does a wonderful job describing a thoughtfully planned approach to the construction of a large complex object in Minecraft. However, building large structures in Minecraft can be easier, especially for inexperienced players, by starting with a foundation of basic geometric shapes. For example, the floating island in the reference illustration is remarkably like a round-cut diamond, which can be further broken down into an inverted pyramid or cone surmounted by the upper half of a hemisphere. Building on such a foundation will help preserve the overall desired shape and may speed the process. Using cobblestone or a brightly colored material for the foundation will act as an easily recognized guide both inside and outside the structure. Visible material can be added in thin layers to achieve the desired effect while maintaining the overall shape. Building up layers this way will also minimize the amount of material needed for the construction and leave the interior completely hollow for whatever construction might be wanted there. Thanks for another Build Theory episode Pixlriffs! They are always thought provoking and greatly appreciated.
I would use lava to light it up on the bottom. Plus add some dripstone for decoration.
Love it Already.
Use fences to make it look like your holding the island from floating aways from the main land
Hope you had a good holiday. Glad you're back. Btw. You can't craft mossy cobble with vines anymore 😉. I know you know that 😂
17:56 I can't unsee the skull on the part of the island nearest to you.
My brain sometimes, I swear.
I wish I could build like this man
This is Great 👍
He is back! I thought he went silent.
18:03 Pix appealing to the ever relatable "Book Writer" demographic... hehe... :P
it's me, I'm the author who felt seen 😂
WELCOME BACK!!!
In one of my worlds, I did a floating island completely freehand; no frameworks or anything, I just started from a 2×2 platform and built up. It's 95% complete because I died to a wither.
I can’t even imagine how long this took you!! do you watch movies, or listen to podcasts or music while building??
Podcasts, music, sometimes other RUclips videos. But honestly this didn't take a super long time - it was about 5 hours, 3 of which were streamed live on Twitch
I cannot wait for Hermitcraft to start up again, but I have to say, I'm really enjoying Pix's content when he doesn't have to spend all his time watching the hermits and working on the recap
I say some lanters handing from "ropes" could light up the bottom.
Hey pix I have an idea: You could build a quarry underneath the build to store lots and lots of stone
Is there a schematic as I work better with that thx
I missed u soo much
I believe that this is the second video this year
Can we get a world download of this plz

0:05 hi
Looking good Pix! I think the island is looking a little round though. I'd recommend trimming the North & South (I think?) sides by a further 5-8 blocks in width to make it look more aerodynamic as if the sides have been eroded over time. That would also allow for some larger flat sections of rock when viewed from the main angle which would help it look less busy.
'Aerodynamic", you meant "erodenamic"? 🙂
@@Rustkingg Sorry, this one is going over my head... care to explain?
@@alamander4444 Sorry, it was just an attempt at a silly word play between 'aero'dynamic and "erode'dynamic. Maybe too silly
@@Rustkingg Hahaha! No apologies necessary!! I appreciate a good pun - this was on me.
Wake up babe, new survival guide episode just dropped.
I feel normal again. ThanKS babe
