Just a sexy plane this was replacing the Phantom F4 when I was n The Marines 71. Da Nang Much more nimble n dogfight and more payload. We salute you Gruman F14 hell of a job.. McDonald Douglas did a pretty good job with the F18 alittle less Mach but a great carrier based fighter.

A crew chief basically is the boss of an aircraft, its his plane and the pilot is just the person who flies it. Kind of like an armorer giving a soldier a gun, its the responsibility of the armorer as to what happens to that gun.

Wall Stretcher JPSC not exactly... he had not really autopilot as it is understood today. The only thing he could do was to maintain the attitude of the flight. For example: u cant turn the HDG knob to turn the plane, but u can switch a button in the right moment of bank for mantein this grade of bank turn. Same thing for altitude, u cant insert a flight level value, u can just switch the button in the right moment of pitch (up or down) for mantein this attitude of flight
Loved the year I did at MCRD Marine Corp Base San Diego by Coronado Pacific Fleet based alot of their tonnage there. Then off to DaNang Plenty of F4 Phantoms flying tree top level and loud u could see black exhaust dropping down from behind and could tell they were tree top level slow airspeed

The Gruman F14 was the perfect plane for carrying huge payload with becoup automatic firepower coupled with the RIO pilot properly painting these early MIGS with state of the Art radar and saying hello from 2 or 3 miles or more . It was long over due since the Phantom ,F4 didn't cut the mustard. I started seeing these very fast and maneverable . I was n the Marines 71 saw these works of art showing up . Then came another carrier based fighter with plenty of Moxy. McDonald Douglas delivered n Spades. Great Planes and a great time to grow up. The F18 with 2 J30 turbo fans tremendous amount of thrust and Gs. This plane talked the talk and walked the walk

Though the F-14 is retired, I still regard this fine aircraft as the torchbearer of naval aviation. The Tomcat, being able to carry a whopping load of firepower while being incredibly nimble was a true and proven workhorse without rival or peer. I loved everything Grumman Aircraft ever built, dating back to the F-4F Wildcat and the F-6F Hellcat of WWII. They were the hallmark of naval aviation even back then.

What a beautiful bird the F-14 is... IT is sad that it retired; but I guess it got old and the maintenance was getting a little crazy for it. I hope they are well-preserved in museums.
There are a lot of F-14s on display around the country. Most of them are on display outside of an aviation museums or at the main entrance of military installations. There are a few F14s that are inside museums and out of the elements. I'm not sure how long an aircraft can last outside in the elements just sitting there. But at least the F14s that are inside will be okay. it would of been nice if the government or a private company kept a couple of them in flying condition. to do demo flights at air shows that'd be cool to see one flying.
I agree. I think it is also bullshit how the F-14 is being replaced by obsolete jets like the Super Hornet, when the F-14 could have been given a modernization upgrade and would be cheaper and better than the F/A-18.
The Super Hornet isn't actually obsolete, but the A-C variants of the F/A-18 are. Let's also remember that the F-14 is a 40-year-old airframe and that upgrading avionics etc to provide capabilities for AIM-120D support etc is costly to develop and more costly to roll out.
I was armoured and drove recce because I didn’t have the brains to fly so I feathered the tillers of a piece of armour like I was flying a Tomcat. I wasn’t and I knew it but every time I climbed into the hatch and put on my crew guard and plugged in my headset and started the engine I imagined I was doing it in a Tomcat.

if i would be priviliged enough to stand on the side somewhere (safely) on a Carrier watching opps,i'd be gazing my eyeballs out all dayyyy....what an incredible coordinated effort from the entire crew to make all this happen.so many things have to work in unison alone,it's just amazing. like setting the steamcatapult for every lauch.every plane's specific weight,fuel load,ordinances,extc....everything gets calculated on the fly....during the take off sequence,if the plane idles too long on the deck,the fuel burned is being deducted just before take off.
Being a young kid back then around the plane on the flight deck was very impressive I've around big machines in my life time and the TOMCAT beats em all

If the F-15 with some upgrades can be extended past 2020, the F-14 especially the D variant could easily have been. It was all about Bush politics and Dick Cheney wanting to destroy all F-14s in order to keep parts from getting into Iran's hands for its F-14s as Iran had tried to smuggle F-14 parts from Fort Lauderdale.

If the F-15 with some upgrades can be extended past 2020, the F-14 especially the D variant could easily have been. It was all about Bush politics and Dick Cheney wanting to destroy all F-14s in order to keep parts from getting into Iran's hands for its F-14s as Iran had tried to smuggle F-14 parts from Fort Lauderdale.
