Speed and Angels (2008), F-14 Tomcat Footage (HD)

- Compiled pretty much all of the F-14 footage from the documentary Speed and Angels (2008). Planned on just messing around while practicing video editing skills and doing a montage of flight deck ops, but I kept on going until I had almost all of the airplane footage. I got music from the documentary's soundtrack and attempted to incorporate it into the video. I tried matching the action on the footage to the music, but that lasted about the first song before I got tired of it. After the first track, the footage is just clumped together mostly by scene. Most of the music in the film is from dance and indie tracks. This video is just a lot of the F-14 footage that appears in the documentary and doesn't capture the very interesting stories of the two pilots that are the focus of the film.
The still at :26 is why the Tomcat is, in my opinion one of the most beautiful mechanical objects I have ever seen. The wings swept all the way back…. parked on deck…. That quiet before the storm; SO graceful ❤
Totally agree with you. She's beautiful. I probably watch top gun at least once a day, not for Tom Cruise the heck with the guy, I watch for the tomcat just like everyone else we appreciate her for her service from Iraq and Afghanistan and for the military men and women have been service to keep us safe.
Great video, Thanks for sharing!
The most beautiful bird that's ever flied.

5:23 *WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!* 😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆
Without a doubt, the most beautiful aircraft. So sad they didn't sign for the Tomcat21 project. Thanks to Dick "asshole" Cheney for decomissioning the Tomcat and sign for the F18, the gayest aircraft i've ever seen.
Bro are you Me !??? Cause I write the exact same way about the Tomcat !!!! and Cheney !!!! It's like we've been separated at birth !!!! Do wanna get Non Gay Married sometime ? Also, dumb question, but have you ever seen the movie "Stepbrothers" ? Cause I think that's us. Hope you're still alive in 2023, my other me. I love Gilmour, you Love Eddie, I think we're brothers !!!
With the F-14D Super Tomcat, the US Navy had the long-sought answer: A truly optimum, purpose-designed, purpose-built air combat platform -- at last clear of the frustrating and deliberate meddling diminution of congress and its parochial interests, honed to a fine-edge by over a decade of initial service in politically-compromised form. The outcome was a true, hyper-capable, fleet defense /air-superiority fighter-interceptor with long-range ground-strike capability superior to the new F-15E
First F-14D produced in 1990; first F-15E in about 1985 as I recall. F-15E: divided workload between pilot and weapons officer as always w/ F-14. F-14D: roughly comparable weapons load with the advantage of lower-drag, recessed center hard-points. Carrier-borne Tomcat was vastly more flexible and available and D-models reportedly just flat ferocious in air-to-air if required and still -- tremendous development potential. Something badly wrong with command structure that allowed its loss.
Budget flacks at the Pentagon thought it would be more economical to have basically one aircraft perform multiple functions. Economies of scale with parts commonalities, procurement, etc.
Never mind they got an inferior product... at least they got a good deal on it.
@@rickwilliamson9248 I sometimes wonder whether it was Pentagon or McD using political influence to increase their cash flow by replacing the F-14 with the f-18. I tend to think of the F-18 as horse designed by a committee, a camel.
Something wrong? His name was Dick Cheney. Killed the F-14 so his buddies at McDonnell could get a nice fat contract. Same guy who caused over a million deaths with an illegal war in Iraq so he could line his own pockets.
The government gets most things wrong.
Que preciosidad ❤❤❤❤
I had a watch this again. Loved the sound track. The F-14 at some angles with the flat line produced by her spread wings and back looks like a predatory bird. Beautiful aircraft.
stopping the F14D program was the stupidest mistake ever done to the US Naval Forces, now would be the Variant E or F, this was the best jet ever built
it was over complicated and heavy with the swing wing - agreed there was more to get with new engines and avionics however - but not as good as a modded F16 or the lates F1SEX
Absolutely fantastic footage - what a beautiful job as tribute to the mighty F-14 👌🏼 ❤
Ya it is
In machine's world it's the most graceful beast ever. Feast to watch. I know it was outdated, hard and expensive to update and simply not necessery after end of the Cold War, but damn... I wish I could have a chance to see one of them in real life. Great music and edit. Thank you.
At first F-14D production, F-15E was still the newest operational development of that type, created with a first-time emphasis on strike as opposed to its original "not a pound for air-to-ground" standard. Despite Strike Eagle's proven excellence, the F-14D had built-in superiority for the bomber role. An industry expert related his satisfaction at observing wargame obliteration of unannounced German MiG-29 interceptors by a Bombcat flight followed by flawless completion of the strike and home.
408knw From your great insightful comments, I don't know if they come from "being in the business", being in the aviation industry ot just a well of accumulatef aviation knowledge. After recent watching of Tomcat Tales, listening to "Snort" and others, on other videos, talk of the evolvement of the F-14 into a great air to ground machine, something in your comment did not seem accidental when you called it the "Bombcat". I like like it. Accompany that nickname with the right image, I think there was a great alternative, signature T-shirt waiting in the wings .
No sir, I'm attempting NOT to say that if they could put your brain on the very edge of a brand-new Gillette razor blade, it would look like a BB rolling down a 12-lane expressway. However -- if you insist...
The aircraft are contemporaries -- in every way, at every level.
The F-15 is a fine aircraft. The F-14D, however, simply had no equal anywhere in the world. Unfortunately, however, we had "a Cheney in the Bushes" at the white house -- and no apparent guts or brains amongst the Navy brass.
I like how this is 13:37 in length.

This music & video has so much energy to it! Great work!
Tomcat for life.
This is beautiful footage, thanks for sharing!
Sorry for that we never owned a F14 ! Greetings from Germany.
I still believe its possible to Give f14 a new live with Stealth included, basically giving the original design of f14d stealth elements and thereby making it as second more capable Navy Stealmultirole fighter with an actuall internal gun 👍
This is great! I love the F-14 Tomcat.
Great aerial footage from the film. Even with the newer D model engines, the F-14 strategic objective and its maintenance costs almost doomed the F-14 in the early 90's until the late Dale Snodgrass introduced the idea of a lantern pod and laser guided air to ground munitions to extend the life of the tomcat.
It was doomed in 1989 after all the revolutions in the Eastern Bloc and the beginning of the "peace dividend" when all kinds of programs were being axed in favor of cheaper alternatives. The F-15E at one point was on Cheney's chopping block too but was saved. In the early 90s one of the arguments for getting rid of an F-14 like capability was the Navy would most likely only be fighting "littoral wars" against low-tech, non-peer threats. 30 years later that was utterly wrong thanks to China.
@@okisoba if only The YF 21 could have been made, maybe NAVY will callout for f14 to Come back, i still have HOPE that F14 with Stealth Design could Be MORE efective then f35 if it had all thw systems of it, it would be mutch better for NAVY then f35C, it would even still had the Interna 20mm something that can still can be Live saving if Missiles fail to down enemys, its allways better to have backup plan 👍
it would even have MORE payloud capacity bcs of the Center mounted hardpoints 👍
@@okisobayou should know the f-14s are not dead yet somehow the program is still on par with the f-14s
@@diprosla592 one word Iran!
Oh yeah. Definitely "twice as fast" -- but can't go supersonic under 16,000 feet with hardpoints occupied and has to be refueled as soon as it's off the deck for strike missions. And not really an F-18. "Sorta looked like one" enough to keep a "suddenly uncurious congress" from putting it through the standard scrutiny. Whatever it owes to the "F-18" (derivative of the "YF-17" that lost out to the F-16 in USAF's early 70s LWF flyoffs) - its roots aren't Navy and it will never be a Tomcat.
Still hard to believe its close to 20 years ago we retired a great plane with still life left in there, dumbasses should had bought the F-14-x...hornet js "GOOD"" not great
"First F-14D produced in 1990; first F-15E in about 1985" you just proved my point. Are you smoking crack?
The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is a supersonic fighter super powerful tandem with variable geometry wings is huge and heavy tasks are Interceptor, air superiority fighter and multiple hunting because asu high capacity to meet the tasks only has to promise IRAN AND USA U.S. to buy it, how bad the plane is its high maintenance cost and time of flight is high, exceeding 40 000 dollars alos flight time, and can rival any aircraft.
I don’t like the « mexican filter » in this show. It would be much better in true color.
I always hated the orange tint they felt need to film EVERYTHING in. Such a shame
Great video. Highlights what an ineradicable bird this was for its time.
Best F14 footage ever ! Made on Long Island baby!
you're getting things kind of wrong. If you really love F-14s you need to buy the book "TOMCAT! the Grumman F-14 story" by rear admiral Paul Gillcrist he explains in great detail why the F-14 was retired, plus it has a lot of great unique F-14 photos and stories.
One of the coolest remarks to hear was Jay talking, in an interview, of how cool it was to look over his shoulder to see a "tennis court" (another Tomcat) coming up on his six.
The music mix is great! sounds like BT did this! It's so well put together!
Awesome video of the F-14. She is just superb in this video.
god i wish they did not retire her early i would have happily spent more tax dollars lol
Hubiera sido increíble ver pelear al tomcat F14 y la última generación del flanker su 27 .lo retiraron antes de tiempo
GOD DAMMIT MAVERICK !!!!
See 9.23 till 9.58 more , have female pilot fly tomcat 😮😮😮😮😮
พอเครื่องยนต์มันจุดระเบิดทำงานครบวงจรตามขั้นตอน 1 2 3 มันจะราบเรียบ
If I was a pilot my list would be F14 F111 A6 A7 A10 F-16. 😢

The D model was the best. TF30 engines were horrible.
Still a great bird!
The F14 is the best! Where do I see this full movie?
It's from a documentary called Speed and Angels. You can find it on Amazon and a few other places.
Beautiful footage and great music choice to go with it.
oh geez, this track ! For me it's SSX3 Intro :D
Was a pretty good documentary.
good footage but sucky music!
Tomcats !
Tomcat 😻👍

I LOVE THIS VID!!!
I use to fly these. Favorite Plane.
Flew the MiG (good plane, better quick turns and evasion), and the Warthog (good old flying brick). And got to fly the Blackbird.

They say high maintenance cost was a factor for the loss of the tomcat I think they should have scrapped the b2 spirit before it even started I mean there's a fair chunk of cash that was useful and let's face it how can a stupid bomber protect you the growl of a tomcat you just can't replace a legend I love you f14 and thank you for your video
Thank you for posting this.
The cinematography on this is freaking outstanding. Great job! 👍
F-14D can use JDAMs, right?
Yes.

I'm talking about the F/A-18E/F, not the F/A-18A/B/C/D You should read up on this, the Navy replaced the Tomcat with the F/A-18E/F, the F/A-18C/D has been in service with the navy since the 1980s

Wow you are name dropping all over the place. If you like the tomcat, wait until you see the Super Hornet!! It's like twice as fast.
Great video, and I have to say that there is something beautiful in Megan´s look when she is flying.
Smeltr I think Megan's "look" comes from a love of flying and a particular deep unbridled love and enthusiasm for the Tomcat and the Tomcat community. All of it is still evident when listening to her talk at "Unofficial Speed and Angels Reunion" video blog.
Stolen video!; You should be ashamed.
