We have a Toy Schnauzer (from a west coast breeder) that we could never give up. When we decided to adopt a puppy, we were as committed as when we decided to adopt children. It’s till death do us part, and we face life’s challenges and surprises together. It is most generous that a breeder would take an animal back for the sake of the dog, but I know how traumatic that would be for our dog to leave us. Further, to then traumatize the dog again and change my mind and ask for her back? I love my dog too much to put her through such a nightmare… even if it meant absolute anguish for me. At some point you have to start thinking about what’s best for the dog. My heart goes out to responsible breeders. I am grateful you exist, but I know I don’t have what it takes to be a breeder.
Thank you for your comment and for your understanding. Yes, my heart goes out to all of us in this situation it is very painful. I prefer to err on the side of being clear, explicit, and helping people to understand the expectations BEFORE they get a dog so hopefully this video and these comments help people who are considering the commitment to any dog - regardless of where they get the dog - even a dog from a shelter is worthy of love and a commitment from the family choosing to adopt it. Great Video explaining your guarantee and discussion on return of a dog. I agree it needs to be case by case but all outlined and contracted prior to the return. I do have had elderly people adopt puppies and always make sure that all family members are on board with the decision,
Yes! That is the way I prefer too - making sure all family members understand the agreement and know what will happen if and when the elderly parent is no longer able to care for the dog. Thank you for your comment.

I feel that I can confidently speak, as a person who has recently purchased one of Shawn’s puppies, that she made certain we discussed every detail, numerous times, prior to me completing the purchase… even though this wasn’t my first rodeo…or dog, we discussed everything, from the emotional, physical, financial, legal, and the other dog in my house, as well as any family ramifications surrounding bringing a puppy into a home and what it takes to integrate it into a family environment. Wow… That was a long, possibly not grammatically-correct sentence.
It is not easy, even with all the training Shawn automatically provides to her puppies, to bring a puppy into your home. A puppy is not a toy to simply snuggle with. It poops. It pees. And quite often in the wrong places. And if it pees in the right place, you may very well find it has decided to sit in its pee. It will chew on things you never expected it to chew on, like the cord from your vacuum sweeper.
To be quite honest, I’ve usually adopted dogs from a shelter in lieu of purchasing one from a breeder, for two reasons. One, I felt it was my duty to save a dog, if I could, and two.. it is much easier, on the entire household, to bring an older dog into a home rather than a puppy. Both for the dog, and the owner, an adopted dog has lower learning curve. Once an adopted dog discovers which door leads to the outside, you’ve pretty well got that part of the learning curve covered. This is not the same for a puppy.
What am I trying to say here? From my dealings with Shawn, I feel that I can confidently say that she leaves no stone unturned regarding obligations on both sides of the purchasing agreement. Returning a dog is difficult for both parties. But Shawn is a dog breeder. She is not a dog boarder. If you are considering purchasing a dog… any dog… Shawn‘s dogs are adorable, well-trained, lovable, healthy, happy, and they want to learn, they want to be with you,… BUT they are still puppies, who will sit in their own pee three times a day for five days in a row, until you figure out why. Ask me how I know.
I can tell you from my heart, that Shawn holds herself to the highest moral values. She was there for me prior to my purchasing Charlie, as well as during the entire purchasing agreement procedure. She also helped me find transportation for Charlie from her home to mine (who knew dog nannie’s were a thing?) and since then, has answered all my “puppy” questions without hesitation.
She has become a close friend whom I probably will never meet. And that perk wasn’t even in the puppy agreement. What a plus! What an unexpected blessing.
If you can afford it, if you understand what’s involved in bringing a puppy into your home, then I would wholeheartedly suggest purchasing one of Shawn‘s puppies.
Best of luck in your life, whatever decision you make. Just be sure to think it through.

Shawn, this is an extremely well-articulated video with complete transparency and judicious explanation of the breeder / buyer’s obligations and what is and what is not covered. We own a 9-month-old Schnauzer from Shawn (Humble is his name [Auburn while at Shawn's] and Penny is his mother) as well as co-parent Sweet-Tee together! You are the absolute best and most loving, caring breeder of any dog breed that my wife and I have had the privilege to meet and purchase a puppy! We have had many purebred dogs from high quality breeders in our lifetime from Beagles, Cocker Spaniels, St. Bernard’s, King Charles Cavilers, and now miniature Schnauzers from Shawn; and we can honestly say that she is outstanding and at the pinnacle for understanding and maintaining the breed. I know of no other breeder in our area, that has the attention to detail, unrelenting passion, and conviction to breed the very best miniature Schnauzers for her customers and family. Shawn, you go above and beyond the standard to provide healthy pups by only breeding DNA clear parents, and feeding them the healthiest possible food, supplements and training. It’s unfortunate your having some issues with someone you had / have a contract with. I hope you aren’t feeling threatened in any way.
I have heard of breeders willing to take back one of there dogs. I don’t think it’s fair of a person to expect the dog they relinquished back, unless it was agreed upon before relinquishing the dog. It sure isn’t fair for the dog. With a dog being in a situation that they aren’t wanted can be very stressful for a dog.
Yes! And I do work very hard up front to ensure that people think about the expectations when getting a puppy or a dog. I also have compassion when people's lives change unexpectedly and they can no longer care for their beloved pet. That is why I offer to take a dog I bred back and find it a great home if that happens. Thank you for your comment and for being on this journey with me.

Buying a dog from SVCC Toys is an option, and if this contract seems unreasonable you don’t have to get a dog from them?
I can imagine that you are not the only person who thinks that my contract is unreasonable - but the fact is no one is forced or required to buy a puppy from me but if someone chooses to get a dog from me this is the agreement. Thank you for watching my video and for your comment.
I feel there is true intention behind this video...hope whomever needs to "get the message" hears/receives it loud and clear! That said, your transparency, policies, and breeding practices were the main reasons I chose SVCC (waiting patiently to welcome my new pup-son 🤎) not to mention how cute and cuddly they are. Sadly, I don't think a lot of people realize what it takes to own a dog when deciding to get one. They make decisions based on the fun aspects of having a dog. But, there's so much more that's not so glamorous -- like when they become senior dogs and require 24-hour care like mine. Fortunately, I was in the position to provide that level of care, but it was difficult and expensive -- thank goodness for pet insurance! I wonder how many dog breeders even offer return policies? I'd imagine there aren't many like yours. However, if I were a breeder, I'd rather take a dog back than risk it ending up in a shelter or worse. Makes me sad to think about it. Just as we (the purchaser) should be able, willing, and prepared to accept all that comes with owning a dog, a breeder should have to do the same in accepting all levels of risk/reward that come with being in this business.
