So sorry this is taking you for a loop! I’m surprised but not shocked considering poodles are somewhere in the bloodline of schnauzers (right???). Just like people, unique traits are bound to show up eventually. While we’re happy that Jaxon (aka Wavy Davy) is 100% Mini, we wouldn’t care if he was a snickerdoodle cookie! What truly matters is ALL of the other wonderful things you do to ensure your puppies make great family additions. I’m certain you will figure out the best way forward. Hang in there!!! 💛🤎

I did research on mini schnauzers a long time ago. They are a mix of breeds and poodle is one. How in the world did it wait this long to pop out? Doesn’t matter. My Tucker and Harley (both Embark) show 100% pure bred mini schnauzer, but deep in my heart, I know, somewhere way back they used a standard schnauzer, a mini poodle, and an affenpinscher to get smaller dogs that look like standard schnauzers. The article was in Wikipedia. Affenpinscher is a dog that is so ugly it’s just adorable. I’d buy a pup from this lady in a heartbeat because she really is a worker with her pups. Guarantee is unbelievable. The dogs seem so much more settled in than mine were. My girl is a maniac, but she’s very protective of me.

Thank you for your comment. Yes, the schnauzer breed was originally created using a combination of different dogs including poodles! I'm making peace with the idea that Embark's tests have evolved and are identifying what a "schnauzer" is differently perhaps - I still get stuck when I think that I tested 3 THREE puppies at the same time who are from the same parents and 2 of them show up as Mini Schnauzers and one shows up as Schnoodle. Yes, I will re-test and perhaps with several companies. I also know that making peace with this and moving forward focused on what would great look like is the best approach for me now .... I still keep taking deep breaths to process all this! THANK YOU!

I worked with Washington University in St Louis School of Medicine, the pioneers instrumental in developing DNA replication models that allow modern DNA tests. I trust Embark and use them with my Mini Australian Shepherd and mini Poodle. The updates to their reference data bank is a good thing. What you experienced is simply genetics. It is why we know as breeders that we should never breed a Standard size (Aussie or Poodle, etc) with a Toy size -- because we could have what was called a "throwback", right? That throwback could cause life-threatening distress in a miniature pregnant female.
And as others have said, poodles are in the heritage comprising the modern day schnauzer. And likely, more specifically, the red teddy bear coats you desire may be due to this poodle input.
Thus, I see Embark's continuing to increase and fine-tune their reference databank as a very good thing.
And therefore they were able to provide you with even greater details on the DNA of your beloved breeding stock.
Best wishes and thank you for your very thoughtful video. I enjoyed hearing your methodology to assist you with decision making, nicely done! 👌

Thank you for your comment. Yes, I have had a great respect for Embark and their commitment. I was shocked that 3 puppies from the same parents would come back with 2 being 100% Mini Schnauzer and 1 being 11% poodle when this mom and dad are both 100% Mini Schnauzer themselves - and yes, the evolving panel of data makes sense to me too as I have seen the DNA results in humans evolve. My husband's first DNA test came back with some very surprising results but then over time that same test now says 100% Japanese. The DNA test for him also says his son is his brother. There is an evolving understanding of these DNA reports / results so I will continue to support the development of the science as I aim to breed genetically sound dogs for the modern world. Thank you!

@@svccschnauzers Sorry for delay in responding, but the above writer is absolutely correct. Shawn, no matter how you breed your dogs, there will always be the possibly of that poodle DNA being detected, it's inherent in the development of the the current schnauzer breed. especially if any 2 schnauzers have a tiny bit more poodle in them and the mating of these 2 just brings it out more prominently to be detected. Remember, any of your puppies will be carrying some poodle genes because that is 1 of the foundation breeds.
Think of it this way, I'm 1 of 5 siblings, 2 short and fair haired, 1 tall and fair haired, 2 tall and dark haired, yet we are all from the same parents. The mystery of genetics.
I do see some importance in checking for truth in breed identification but I think it's most important for detecting inherited genetic disorders, so as not to further add it to the whole population of dogs out there and then it becomes tragic when 2 totally unrelated dogs get bred and the litters are affected. I can direct you to what happened in Quarter horses, with 1 gene mutation, undetected till too late and now so wide spread, the so called 'Impressive' sire gene, HYPP. We also see disorders with the merle gene in dogs, I could go on and on.

I appreciate your honesty and integrity. I would consider having the three puppies restested with another company to see if you receive the same results on the litter. Regardless of the outcome, if I was looking to get another puppy, I would 100% be looking to get that puppy from you as I am confident that you produce genetically sound, great temperament dogs. This also reminds me of the origination of the Biewer Terrier breed with the black, white, and tan puppies being born frrom Yorkshire terrier parents. Eventually, the Biewers were recognized as a separate breed. The Biewer terrier data analysis project information is interesting as they looked to see if any Biewer Terrier chromosomes that cannot be explained by descent from the Yorkshire Terrier. Thank you for sharing your thougth process.

I understand that email, makes perfect sense. Worked in a top level hospital lab, the variables that I had to deal with, would confuse the majority of people. Remember, it's percentages of the DNA, and a throwback can happen. Same thing as in human genetics, check it out.
Shawn, you do breed wonderful pups, that's priority🥰
Adding, the DNA library panel will most likely be increased as time goes on, same as in humans, and methods for testing will change too, I did that as a living for 38years.
    Don't fret too much.

Thank you Dotty! With your expertise and background perhaps you can help me with the ethical questions I am struggling with - how could I knowingly register this dog as a Mini Schnauzer with AKC if I see a Schnoodle Embark Report for him? I understand from other breeders that they do this and Embark says that AKC registration has nothing to do with the Embark DNA reports. Also, I feel it would be unethical to sell him as a "schnauzer" after I have seen this - what do you think? I also feel like I need to re-test some of my other dogs to see what their *NEW* Embark report would say ... but I already paid for their Embark report! I don't want to have to spend thousands of dollars again for the same tests to be run. Shouldn't Embark offer to INFORM us if they make changes that could impact our dog's breed status? Couldn't that be part of the original price as it is with human DNA reports - I don't have to pay anything additional to re-run my DNA report on myself, I can simply log in and see any updates that have been identified. Ok you can see here how my thinking is evolving and then when I am exhausted with all this I end out saying perhaps I need to just let the whole "what breed is the dog" thing go and just breed the size and colors I like? Would love to know your thoughts on this and again thank you for sharing your expertise!

Funny. A few of your puppies have caught my eye, especially the "red" ones look so much like my schnoodle did as a pup that at first i thought maybe you bred schnauzers and schnoodles. Then I wondered if you WOULD consider breeding schnoodles, mine is the best dog ever, and they're so sought after these days!
You breed well bred, well planned, healthy puppies that get a great start in life. Plus, no one can say you're not open and honest! I am not in a place to buy a puppy from a breeder, and you and your channel have still been super helpful as I've been raising a newly adopted pup!
For your conundrum, I'd retest if it were me. Curiosity would make me. Maybe even retest the parents? Then I'd move on, keep on, and keep being open. But, honestly, they're all AKC registered so you've done what you said and bred mini schnauzers. Maybe their test algorithm has gotten too sensitive in picking up breeds that were used in creating a breed?

How interesting! And I’m sure it was quite a shock for you. I agree with the many other comments…whether with Embark or another company, I would retest the whole litter and see what comes of it.
As one who has very limited knowledge or experience with DNA testing in any form, I do wonder though…is there really any dog that is fully 100% a purebred? As breeds were created or shipped across the world and developed to conform to so called standards and ideals, I’m sure breeds got intermixed somewhere down the line. I have no knowledge of the Miniature Schnauzer and its history so I can’t speak for it specifically. But I own and adore Lhasa Apso’s and I wouldnt be surprised if Shih-tzu’s would show up in their DNA somewhere down the line. The modern day Lhasa Apso that the Western world created for the show ring is far from what a true Tibetan Lhasa was centuries ago. Now, being a Lhasa connoisseur myself, would I be upset if my dog’s DNA showed 11% Shih-tzu? I don’t think so. But if it were more than 50%, yes, I probably would be shocked and disappointed. Having said that, I do want to emphasize that I think temperament is and will always be the most important thing that I look for in a puppy regardless of the breed.
Thank you for sharing your honest thoughts and experience. What an unexpected adventure. Hope you find some resolution soon 💛

Good morning Shawn🌸Thank you for sharing with us the shocking news and your thought process. I am very sorry you received that news that gave you less sleep. I understand how Surprising/shocking the results would be (it would be for me as well). One of the reason we love your schnauzers is the way they are cared for, treated, breed, trained, just to name a few. For us, because of allergies reasons and because we know shcnauzers don’t trigger our allergies, we picked-up that breed. With that said, poodle are also easy on allergies. It would be interesting to see from which side (mom or dad) that the “schnoodle” DNA strand came from, and how far back in generations (could be interesting for sure-I love DNA). I do believe your dogs are shnauzers and that they were not mixed with poodles. Embark DNA has a great track record. Unless, poolde and schnauzer have the “same DNA markers” that were just found…It would be intersting to have the boy tested again with Embark and/or another company or both. Sometimes errors can occur and retesting is done. Obviously, if it is true and it is coming from the dad’s side…more puppies could get the random gene. But, overall, I do believe that the dog behaviors are also related to how they were trained…not just from DNA. Thank you, Shawn again for being transparent and honest and going through this process with us. Wishing you a very nice day and one or two ☕️cups of tea🫖💗🌸🤗

Shawn! My 2 year old black schnauzer just came back from Wisdom panel 96% mini schnauzer 3% mini poodle % 3%mini Austrian shepherd. Turns out the original breeder was looking for blue eyes and Merle and here our guy, Apollo is, all black white chest, goatee and paws. I wanted a purebred 100% schnauzer and got this knuckle head who we love to the moon and back. I only got the test to know more about his health. He came back clear for health and still is considered full blooded mini schnauzer. The science and data will never be 100% forever.
I also got my dna tested on Ancestry years ago and my African heritage has evolved from Nigeria to Cameroon over the years. As more dna is entered the data evolves. Be easy! Love the content and love your heart for your dogs, only if you care more about the dogs and less about very very specific genetics. Onward and upward! 🐾❤️

And in the human DNA tests I can take it very lightly because I care about ALL ... and I think one of the other people's comments nailed my feelings: I want to be in integrity in my work and honest with people about what they are getting from me. I want to be able to trust Embark's DNA tests to accurately represent the HEALTH info and since I am confused by what happened with this litter of 3 puppies when I know that ALL the ancestors and siblings for this one puppy come back as 100% mini schnauzer ... well it just dumbfounded me and now as I process myself through it I am able to say that my focus is going to be on Health and Temperment instead of the specific breed since for Embark that seems to be evolving and changing in ways I don't understand. I want to do my best and be in integrity. Thank you for sharing this journey with me.

Hello Shawn, thanks for posting this very insightful and truly introspective video with your decision making and thought process with this DNA discovery.
Like the Embark DNA testing mentions this could be the effect of recombination DNA or crossover. These crossovers result in recombination and the exchange of genetic material between the maternal and paternal chromosomes. As a result, offspring can have different combinations of genes than their parents. Genes that are located farther apart on the same chromosome have a greater likelihood of undergoing recombination, which means they have a greater recombination frequency. This recombination process creates genetic diversity at the level of genes that reflects differences in the DNA sequences of different organisms.
All that being said, you have the highest integrity and authenticity for breeding your miniature schnauzers, and in the end I believe and feel you still have met your goal (and need) of producing the cute, cuddly, adorable schnauzers, while providing genetically healthy puppies to families all over the country! ❤

Yes, thank you Andy, I am hearing this from many of my schnauzer breeder friends that this is much more common now and not to be so surprised by the random pop up of a "schnoodle" in the DNA even though both parents Embark Reports say Mini Schnauzer.

If they have retained the original sample, ask them to retest it. Laboratory errors are not uncommon. It is strange that it took two weeks longer for the results of that sample compared to the litter mates. Also, send another sample from that puppy, not identified as being from that puppy. If they have not retained the original sample, but ask you for a fresh sample, send it, but also send separately the sample not identified as being from that puppy. See how all results compare.

Hello Shawn, I have thought about your news all day. I can empathize with you. Please take comfort in all of the people who support you. I agree with most posters, have little guy retested. I purchased a dog from you for two big reasons. 1) the quality of the dog and the breeder 2) the training and the care of the dog. If I found out Jelly was 11% poodle, I wouldn't love her any less. Please take care.

Shawn, I am a "purest" when it comes to the standard akc colors of black, black and silver, salt and pepper, and the occasional white one.
I do want a black and silver.
I love ❤ your integrity. I am in aw of how you train your puppies. Especially how you teach them not to bark. Its 99% all positive. I had never seen that before. With you training Mocha to be a therapy dog. It's great and amazing. It gives me hope that I will be able to train my next pup to be my service dog for my hearing loss and by the grace of God she will be able to detect my diabetic lows.
I also want to train it for agility. It would be good for both of us.
My Abba who passed in Nov would naturally wake me up in a diabetic low and she was not trained to do so. Last time i was at 44 and if i had kept sleeping I would of been dead in the am if she had not waken me.
    Keep up your great work.

Shawn, we agree with retesting! Who knows if little red boy’s test got lost in the mail, tampered with, took too long to get to Embark (things happen). You’re the most transparent breeder, as evidenced by your channel, and I wouldn’t pick another one! We love mini schnauzers because of their trainability, their loyalty, affection and their particular hairstyle. All these things make a schnauzer for us! Because dogs have been bred for thousands of years, they all do have some sort of similar DNA somewhere. Just as in humans that do 23&me testing have all the same 2% East African decent (or more). This one just happened to ping for little red boy, but in no way in my mind makes him less of a schnauzer than before because the DNA lines would have to go so far back to find it. Maybe the algorithm is more sensitive now. Either way, we are excited about our Bama, and another one for next year! Keep doing what you do, bringing love and joy and beloved family companions to the world.

I just went through the stages of grief for you. I was very angry with Embark but I understand the science, meaning more crossbreeding will begin to show up as they can get more data. All dogs are crossed to make different breeds. I have so much to say but, I need to organize my thoughts better. First, thing would be retest some of your breeding dogs. Definitely, retest the puppy. My mini schnauzer had some red/brown in his salt and pepper. 11% poodle isn't really a schnoodle, a schnoodle is half and half. I understand your shock and dismay but you are one of the most ethical people I have ever had the pleasure to interact with. I do believe your subscribers are here for you and your puppies ❤️. I will probably comment more later. But I think you need to do some more testing for your peace of mind and also remember we are here for you and your beautiful puppies.

I believe the only way you can breed color into schnauzers is to breed it into them, usually a poodle. Same with long haired chihuahuas. I think that is true with humans too. I think it is 8 generations that it can show up. The chances of you throwing another doodle is rare. I would not worry about it. If you are going to breed fancy schnauzers you are going to run into this. If you get one back that says they have poodle in them, just disclose . Most people will not care. You do a great job Shawn.

Thank you!

Hello Shawn, I don’t even know where to begin. This comment might be lengthy. I am sure that the email that you received shook you to your core! The word integrity was used throughout this video which touch me deeply of your concern about the many people that have been your clients in the past. And I totally agree on its importance. After you received that email, I can only imagine that’s the first place that you went to in your mind and emotions was that you immediately questioned yourself. Am I being truthful? Answer Yes! You are telling people things that are true! Every aspect of SVCC was thought out thoroughly. You researched and educated yourself and found a mission that was grounded on truth and facts! So take a deep breath your integrity is in perfect condition. Your integrity is not based on a puppy that might or might not have been tested correctly. My vote would be to follow “your” suggestion and have the puppy tested by another company. There is nothing on this planet that is 100% 100% all the time. No matter how analytical, how scientific, how mathematical, how much a person is an expert in any field there are moments of… this does not fit the pattern. In science and many times in medical situations where there is no answers the professionals call that “an Act of God”. You have relied on their scientific results and felt comfortable knowing you were moving in the right direction by breeding quality pets. You are amazingly devoted, and your conviction in producing the best pet cannot be replicated by anyone except you! You have a gift and a passion and people can see your heart in every video shown by your care and concern for each and every puppy. You’re actually putting a pet YOU loved and cared for into our hands. My two cents is not to change your direction, your website or your convictions. I have no idea how long you have been breeding dogs but if this is the first time you experience this type of test result maybe it was a little nudge just to randomly have second opinions from other breed dna testing companies. Maybe sometimes we go along thinking all is well but maybe we just need to double check. So in closing, I wouldn’t change your business plan or anything that you’re doing currently until you investigate further. I wouldn’t make any decisions about your business until you have all the answers that you need from the company that you’re currently using and some other companies as well so you can place all those pieces together in front of you. Could this be just one in a million little puppy that we will never know how he came to be here by this mama? Could this be someone else was running the computer program testing that day? Peace be with you and your heart Shawn. Sometimes there aren’t any answers to the “why”. That’s what so amazing about our lives. We are all on a journey and sometimes things gets placed at our feet that we need our attention. So maybe, just maybe having the puppy tested again will give you the answers that you need. But most of all peace of mind.
    One of many devoted fans
    Patricia Nisley 🐶🤗❤

Personally I would retest!!! Or find another genetic firm. I would never have a schoodle. When you breed a high strung dog to another high strung, because you have been told they won’t shead, (is crazy) its the temperament issue. Some are sweet and others..... I have had schnauzers for 40+ years. I have bathed, and groomed schoodles and I do not want to do this anymore. Most pet parents do not brush and it is horrible to groom a double coated with deep mats. This is only my opinion !!!! Good luck my dear I hope you get this resolved! Still your puppies are adorable and 11% is not 50%. Still retest with another co. with good integrity.❤️

  • @joyceschetter5871

What a shock! However the breed is thought to have poodle as one of the breed’s origins. It’s unclear how that obviously recessive DNA component escaped previous testing. It may have always been there but the test wasn’t sophisticated enough or the mo/father gene commination was not significant enough. But if you compare teddy bear trimmed schnauzers with poodles it’s not inconceivable that they might be related. The soft curly coat and non traditional hair colors are the confusing factors. I love YOU and your dogs. You are the most conscientious breeder!

    • @svccschnauzers

Thank you Joyce! Yes, when schnauzer hair grows out it can get wavy and curly especially if the puppy was never hand stripped (which is what is done to the show dogs to get that wiry look and feel.) I've had salt and pepper and black and silver dogs that are 100% min schnauzer have that teddy bear look long before I started getting into the rarer colors. It seems to be the darker red color that seems to trigger the DNA to skew to schnoodle I am learning. Thank you.

I think there are two things going on. You are an extremely honest person. That is causing you a conflict. You don’t know whether you can trust embark, and you want to make sure what you are sellingis what yo u are advertising..I don’t know the world which you habit because I am a 77-year-old lady who just wants a dog - and we had talked about this before. Peace of mind is worth more than money. I am certain it cost a bit of change to do DNA testing. I’m also certain that embark will not redo the test for free. Just because the result was not what you wanted, but not necessarily mean that they did something wrong as a result. They are not gonna consider them. I’m not a lawyer though my son is in the 41 years that I’ve done, my trials and Greek myth units with middle school through high school. I learned a bit about tragedy. First must not make this more than it is. You have a dilemma, but I’m certain that you will figure out what to do about it. If it were me, I would have, another DNA service that you respect repeat the test and I’d have Embar repeat the test and see the results. The funny part for me is that I would love a schnoodle . There is a woman online who breeds noodles and if she had a dog rather than a puppy, I would get one. I’m going to Maine in about two weeks. I will be coming back to Michigan in late October but I still have not gotten a dog. My carpenter is ready and willing to fence in my yard in Maine. The fact that you may have Schudel jeans associated with your puppies actually makes me feel good. If you could just find me a dog and not a puppy, I would’ve spent the money already. If you decide to bring a poodle into your breeding practices, I would jump for joy if I could jump, jumping part of what I can do. I’m trying to lighten what you are beginning to feel might be a tragedy. It is not. People who know and you understand that you are an honest, decent person and that doesn’t change if there’s some DNA contaminant in your schnauzers, be interesting to find out how it happened. I know that there are F1 F1 V and all kinds of alphabet soups when it comes to breeding. I’ve been looking at dogs that have vigor. They call it because I want a dog that does not shed and is as hypoallergenic as I can get. I love your schnauzers and the way in which you bring them up and feed them and take care of them - but I would prefer prefer a schnoodle because you don’t have a dog that I can get. For many years I wanted to schnauzer and I still will consider it if I can get a schnauzer that is a couple years old. All of this is to say I admire you and I think you are having a crisis because of your honesty, please take this little bit of advice - it only matters that you do your best to provide what you say is what you are providing. And if anybody doesn’t like that, don’t sell them a dog. Regards.

Aw, how kind of you to share this perspective with me! Yes! There are many people who want schnoodles and like you they want a well bred dog regardless of what AKC or the Embark DNA says the breed is. Thank you! You are right, I want to have integrity in what I am doing and thus I want to accurately represent my puppies in a way that people understand and know what they are getting. Embark's reports have been very important to me in my work and now I am questioning if their ability to identify a breed correctly is accurate. Yes, this puppy will be re-tested and I will explore what is the best way to represent all this going forward - it make take me a few weeks but I am practicing saying: I breed Schnauzers and a schnoodle pops out occasionally too 😂 even though I don't own or have a poodle that could visit!

  • @adventurousdoglover
    @adventurousdoglover Месяц назад

    I’m asking to learn 😅
Your pups seems to have more of the poodle cross look then what a traditional schnauzer look has. Is that all schnauzers or just depending on what’s in the lines? I don’t typically see fluffy faces schnauzers often but they’re cute

    • @svccschnauzers
      @svccschnauzers  Месяц назад +1

Thank you for asking this important question! If a schnauzer puppy's hair is able to grow out as a puppy - and that dog is not hand striped to make the coat coarse - then that puppy can have a wavy look as the hair grows out. I've had black and silver and salt and pepper colored schnauzers that were 100% schnauzer but never groomed in the traditional schnauzer style that look like fluffy teddy bears. Again I appreciate your question and so much of the coat is related to how it is groomed and if it is allowed to grow out. ❤️

If I had found your channel before getting my little boy I definitely would have made a trip from Kentucky to your home to purchase one of your puppies. With the fact that his testing wasn’t done at the same time that you sent it in and with the other 2 puppies it just seems not trustworthy. The testing company should have run his test over. I would look at other testing companies. All this being said I would absolutely buy a puppy from you. My little boy Leo looks exactly like Burberry except a little bigger and we love him so much. Get some sleep and try not to worry so much about this. Your puppies are so cute and sweet.
