The time sometime varied by only a couple of minutes. When the clocks got set back in the fall it was 1 am she would get me up

    @nancynjones9126 7 месяцев назад +7

    Schnauzer's are actually very smart. They rank 12th in terms of intelligence among 138 qualifying breeds. They were measured upon a specific type of intelligence called "obedience and working intelligence." They were evaluated on how quickly they learned a new command and how well they retain their obedience training. Teach them something with 15 repetitions. Doing this 2x/day and it won't take long for your Schnauzer to learn new things. They are very good problem solvers. That's what made my oldest (3.5 yrs old) a master escape artist. If your Schnauzer wolf's their food down get slow feeders for them. The larger size Kong is excellent. There are other slow feeders too. I have a cool one that you fill a cylinder and they roll it on the floor and the food comes out of a hole. It's now their favorite. Another one they like is a ball that rolls around on the floor. It gives them sometthing to do and helps with the wolfing food down. If they don't pay any attention to them don't think they are going to starve and put their bowl back down. When they get hungry enough they will get curious and figure it out. That is what they do best is figure the problem out. I don't get the flat bowls that have smaller compartments in it. I feel they can still eat pretty fast with them. The video is spot on.

    Aways best to know what you’re getting into with an animal. Many are easy, many are tough, most require more than many think. If you’re up to the task then the toughest of breeds can be amazing pets. If you aren’t, then that’s ok. Acknowledge it and find one that you can. Maybe you’ll work your way up to them, or maybe you’ll find a breed you never knew you could love so much! As long as you can provide the needs for the pup then you’ll have a happy and healthy companion!

    I did a bit of research before getting one. Personally I would preferred larger dogs but my schnauzer is one of the best breeds for my living arrangement. My dog is indeed intelligent, sensitive so training is easy. I walk my dog twice a day, before and after work. Training at every meal time. She has never touched stuffs that not belong to her. She does not have separation anxiety as long as you give her opportunities to do her bussiness outside she won't be an issue with house training either. Food allergies and grooming will cost you so be prepared. Although I still referred the boxer like looks I am glad I have her. She is way easier to care for than the poodle mix btw.

    My mini Schnauzer was crazy when she was at 4 month old. Luckily, I found Petco puppy play date at that time. It helped socialize her tremendously at 6 -8 old months, which also taught me a lot about dog training and dog interaction by just watching the socialization session every weekend. I had to take her to her dog park every day for 2-3 hours to wear her out. She had her best friends at the dog park and it was so much fun to see her smile and have fun nicely with other dogs. She stopped playing too rough and become the best dog (except for barking for all kind of reasons) because of all those puppy play dates and the dog park play. She just started to calm down with her energy after she is 4 years old.

    My miniature Schnauzer was only energetic during her first 4 years. She was never destructive and rarely barks. I have to agree she becomes "deaf" if she wants to do something and you call her.... But her hearing improves to excellent if you open the cupboard door where her food or snacks are in. She absolutely loves young children. Only health issues she's had in 11 years is the removal of some blocked sweat glands. I had it removed (only for cosmetic reasons). Her anal glands have to be seen to every 6 months. I cannot imagine my life without her.

    We have two miniature schnauzers; one four years old, and one four months old. The older dog runs and plays hard for an hour twice a day on our fenced half acre. The pup runs hard…off and on all day. She sleeps, she eats, and she runs. We have to give our older schnauzer isolated time away from our pup. They truly enjoy each other, but the younger dog would hang with the older one all day. The older one needs time to chill. Schnauzers train easily with minimal but consistent food reinforcement and exact and repetitive daily verbal commands. It only takes a few minutes in the morning each day to work with your pup. We have had many breeds, but the schnauzer is our favorite. They are smart, cute, and most happy to please if commands are simple and consistent. Pro tip: run a comb through their coat daily and you will be doing the LEAST amount of work necessary to maintain their coat. Working on mattes will take you three times as long. These are beautiful animals, but they do require a little extra care to achieve the stunning look of this breed.

    Can I ask you a question about mini schnauzers? *I'm a very active person and plan on bringing my future pup hiking, jogging, motorcycle'n, walks, swims etc etc daily... my concern is that I live in a small 1 bedroom apartment. There's a super cool cat that is socialized to friends/family dogs to also keep company while away. Would a small apartment be a bad idea (even though I'll exceed 1 hour of hard activities every day?)
    Edit: cat has a crawl space shangrala all to herself and lots of vertical access points throughout apt. Cat/dog can easily have personal space whenever they decide.

    • @ScottytheSchnauzer
      @ScottytheSchnauzer  4 месяца назад +1

      Hi! Thanks for asking. Well, I don’t know how small your apartment is, but in general Mini Schnauzers are pretty active and are likely to go stir crazy in a very small apartment. So I guess it would depend on how small the space is. It’s awesome that you’re active and that you would include your dog in those activities! Physical activity is a MUST for Mini Schnauzers because if they don’t get it, they will end up destroying furniture, carpets, shoes (they are obsessed with their owner’s shoes!). So that’s a concern that I would have in a very small apartment. Because even an hour of physical activity might not be enough to keep the Schnauzer sane in a small space. They aren’t lap dogs or lazy dogs. They like to guard their surrounds and monitor things. If it’s a studio, I don’t think it would be a good match for a schnauzer. But again, I don’t know the actual size, I’m just going off of Scotty and my other Schnauzer before him, and I know they got depressed in small spaces. I’m sorry if it’s not the answer you’re looking for, but feel free to clarify or ask any more questions😊

      @@ScottytheSchnauzer Thank you. I appreciated your insights and taking the time to respond, cheers. What do you think of this idea? I've visited multiple breeders/stores etc, for minis, with the original intent of getting an alpha pup or high tempo, open to everything sorta dog. What if instead I aim to slowly grow the confidence with a Mini Schnauzer *runt puppy? Idk, sorta dial down the schnauzer-ness +/- Does this make sense? I initially rejected the idea of runts, but I've reconsidered. (happy 4th)

      @@geekvinosif there’s one thing I’ve learned with Schnauzer’s, you can NEVER predict what their personality will be like 😂 But it would be interesting to see how getting a runt goes. They are usually timid. Scotty was timid when I first got him and now thinks of himself as a king 👑

    My mini schnauzer‘s name is Emily. She was attacked by my wife’s big, dumb dog. she was so confused she tried to bite me, and I felt her energy as low as it could be, practically passing out as she was defending herself. i’m going to put her in a new environment
    With my mom. Can they learn not to attack new humans let alone dumb dogs.

      I hope the new environment will be a better situation for Emily 🩷😊

      He’s considered a “Black and Silver”, but it feels likes it’s the same thing 😉

    My miniature schnauzer only did hand shakes if he got a treat . If he didn’t see the treat there was no hand shakes.
