    The map file for the ultimately cut Azjol-Nerub zone seemed really cool, even if it was basically just blockouts with placeholder buildings. Would've been a cool and unique place tbh

    I still wish we were able to visit Ajzol-Nerub more outside of a few dungeons. Would trade 3.2 and the Tourney for a Nerubian patch. Could have led into ICC as well, infiltrating Icecrown from below...

    It is interesting how in WC3's map and some of the old WoW RPG Arthas and Brann stayed in Drak'tharon Keep. Did they force their way in as part of the purging after Arthas turned on his Ice Troll (And ogre) mercenaries who'd helped him Cortez his men? Were they invited as potential allies against the Scourge? The Drakkari did mainain diplomacy with their local Wolvar after all.

    I really like your lore theories. Often, they make more sense than blizzard´s explanation of things. When it comes to your last point, the entrance to Azjol Nerub, this makes perfect sense.Of course, blizzard moves or removes objects, continents and cities from WC3 for practical reasons. But Pit of Narjun makes no sense. The place looks jagged and improvised, recently built. In addition, the taunka would not build their capital atop of the main entrance to Azjol Nerub.

    There is a big detail to consider : the map of Ahn'Kahet takes 700Mo which is the same amount that Kalimdor or Eastern Kingdom. It means that the existing map of Ahn'Kahet is very very big but not accessible to players. in fact, if you can travel on it, you can find it empty but full of details.
    The reason being that developpers wanted an underground area to exist but did'it knew how to do it because each time they tried, because of the number of details, the game crashed. The idea was recycle to create the Deepholm.
    It proves that there was an idea during the developpment of Wotlk to enlight the Nerubian civilisation and give it a whole importance to the story but they had to reconsider their plans because of feasability issues.
    In my view, as we see Anub'Arak telling us that he never thought being fred from the undead mindcontrol, it would have been cool to have the point of view of every former Nerubian kings and have more peace of lore from them.

    • @Jediwarlock
      @Jediwarlock  10 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you for the thoughtful comment! Yes, Ahn'Kahet is a massive map in terms of assets and verticality. Making a whole underground zone on Northrend would have crashed most computers at the time... I honestly wouldn't have minded if they instanced it into a separate game map (like the Deeprun Tram) to keep the load time manageable but I understand why they wouldn't want to do that. :)

    Years back I saw a map one time of what would have been the zone for these guys that would have been in the game if they would have made it but it may have just been a concept of fan made map but the zone it self was pretty big kind of on the scale of Vashjir kind of 2 zones in one .
    Though i consider Wrath perfect it would have been nice to see a patch between ToC patch and ICC where we could battle our way into a Nerubian zone

    I have always thought azjol nerub was a big conundrum... the entrance to both azjol nerub and ahn kahet are underground and the walkable road is made of spiderwebs... not only that but the huge straight descent can only be realistically traversed by flying creatures or the spiders.
    Yet somehow nerzhul and his undead managed to invade and destroy the kingdom...
    How? And more importantly, how did they climb out?

    • @Jediwarlock
      @Jediwarlock  11 дней назад

      I think an important part of that story is how after nerubians were slain they were converted to be members of the Scourge... therefore in a war of attrition the Scourge eventually amassed a bunch of zombie spiders that could help invade the kingdom :o

    Hi Jedi!
    I wonder if the WoW engine has what it takes to make full (preferably multiple) underground zones these days. I love imagining Wrath content but with three new zones under the surface full of new and interesting things to explore.

    • @DIEGhostfish
      @DIEGhostfish 10 месяцев назад +1

      I mean they had Deepholm and this new cavern in Dragonflight I got bored of because it introduced MORE bag wasting currency.

    • @Jediwarlock
      @Jediwarlock  10 месяцев назад

      I think they definitely could, but the way the engine works I'm guessing they would have the Nerubian/underground zones be on a separate game map (like the Deeprun Tram, etc.). As I understand it most of the terrain/assets are loaded only on the horizontal plane, which means if you're walking around a zone your computer would still be loading the underground areas which could cause issues though. Maybe there are fixes for this but those are my thoughts. :)

    • @General12th
      @General12th 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@JediwarlockFrom what I understand of the original terrain engine, there's a plane of terrain that can be deformed to an arbitrarily high (but not infinite) slope, and sections can be cut out entirely to place objects like Dwarven houses and caves. But it's not possible to have multiple layers of terrain, or have terrain "fold back" on itself.
      This kind of terrain system probably saved a ton of data compared to using a giant (or multiple giant) objects for the terrain, but it also left the system less versatile when it came to verticality. Tradeoffs for the computers of 2004, I suppose.
      I wonder if Blizzard could modify the terrain system and implement this idea these days, or if WoW is such a tangle of spaghetti code that it would break the game completely.

    • @Dimumouto
      @Dimumouto 10 месяцев назад

      @@General12th Considering the amount of bugs that have occurred in Wrath Classic, it is indeed a tangle of spaghetti code held together with hopes, dreams, and lots of duct tape.

    • @killerbee.13
      @killerbee.13 10 месяцев назад

      @@Jediwarlock They developed new tech for Dragonflight to add the Zaralek Cavern map in 10.1, which is on a separate map file but the game loads it seamlessly as you go into it. It does mean that they need fairly long and winding tunnels to go in and out so that you can't ever actually see the map load in (I do see error messages appear sometimes saying something vague about map loading errors, so it seems that even now it's not something the engine likes to do, but I've never had it fail completely). There were some interviews around when the patch was announced where the devs talked about the terrain system and how they had to fake map stacking. If WotLK had come out today, I'd love to see what they could do with Azjol-Nerub as a fully realized underground zone, or maybe even multiple zones given its sheer size.
      I think that technically they can make the scaling not be perfectly uniform with the locations of the tunnels relative to the map sizes, since they're effectively portals instead of actual tunnels. I don't think that there is a mismatch but I've never bothered checking the in-game coordinates to see if they match up perfectly.
