Making LASER CUT DESKS with my Laguna EX 150 Watt Laser Cutter

- Recently Makers Workshop got an upgrade, a Laguna EX 150 watt Laser Cutter. I wanted to take on a project that would really maximize this laser cutter's full potential, so I decided to tackle a laser cut furniture piece, specifically a walnut laser cut desk... and then my daughter asked if she could use my test cut of the desk pattern as her remote learning desk, so naturally I obliged and wound up taking one TWO laser cut desks. In addition to the laser cut parts these desks feature local live edge slabs that we dried ourselves, and Total Boat Resin Rivers down the middle.
I'm looking forward to making more laser cut furniture in the future. The Laguna EX 150 handled the 1/2 inch plywood like butter.
Enjoy the video,
Michael

OK, I gotta say I shed a tear when you hit the drawer faces with brad nailer. 😿
It's the best way that I've found to do it for me. I try to hide the brads behind where the drawer pulls go and ill sometimes hit it with wood putty if I have a close enough color match and it feels necessary. I'm all ears if you have a better way though; I'm always down to try something new
@@MakersWorkshopLLC Hot glue, then screw from behind, in conjunction with the drawer slides, it's bulletproof.
Use your hot glue gun to tack them into place.
I bet your daughter loved it! That was a great project and you guys did a great job.
Absolutely brilliant, the tables came out outstanding and I love your workshop. 👊🏾
Wow. Wow. Wow.
Amazing work!
Thanks so much. This was a fun one to watch take shape
Very cool project!! Technology continues to amaze me! Beautifully done!
Thank you, this laser is a beast and was our dream laser for a while. Even still it’s exceeded our expectations at every turn. It’s awesome.
I really enjoyed watching this video. Really cool results.
Thanks so much for watching
I love the wonderful balance in this video between machined and handmade work, plus the fact that all the helpers are there. Amazing work with the top!
My favorite projects are ones that harmoniously blend machine work, and the more typical woodworking. Just because some of it was done on a machine doesn’t mean that it can’t still be one of a kind and a piece of art. I didn’t set out to make two originally but I enjoyed that this gave the opportunity to show how with different desktops and materials, the same design can look and feel very different.
@@MakersWorkshopLLC I can’t agree more. Machines are part of the craft. Computer controlled machines just make everything easier and safer.
But that final human touch is what makes every single item shine.
Dude, your such a dork.......subscribed.
Thinking about subscribing, myself! 😅

Sold… subscribed.. rang the bell. 💁🏼♀️Makes me wanna build a desk with the laser cutter that I don’t own. Going to buy a laser now.
Nice Job !! 👍🏼👌
Good job 👍
Nice video! Desks are fabulous. That Laguna laser cutter is a monster. Mahalo for sharing! : )
Its a monster indeed. Thanks for watching!
B-E-A-UTIFUL desk! That laser is incredible to handle 1/2 plywood. V jealous.
We were really impressed with how well it handled the 1/2 inch plywood. Can’t wait to make more furniture with it now!
Amazing video! These desks are absolutely stunning!!!
Thanks guys! We appreciate it.
Amazing videos guys! Those desks are INSANE!
Thank you! Can’t wait to move them into their final home
Nice build
Those came out awesome! Love the finish you applied.
Thanks. I always go back to that same finish, especially over resin. It gives the best look.
awesome! I just bought a trotec speedy 400 and i'm excited to do some similar projects once i have more woodworking equipment!
Oooo! You’ll have fun with that
Amazing
The desk look really great
Thank you!
Might want to give a try adhering your mold ends/bottom with silicone caulk instead of hot glue. I've found it to be way less likely to leak.
Really cool project! Thanks for sharing.
That’s awesome solution. I tend to not plan ahead enough for the dry time caulking would need but it’s a great idea
Amazing work. You've earned a new subscriber. Ps. I recently bought a 150 watt CO2 laser as well
Thank you so much. I’m working on some more laser cut furniture in the near future, so stay tuned
Awesome video, thanks for sharing!! Wish you would have showed the river run after you polished it. Still great job and detail!
Thanks for the input!
@@MakersWorkshopLLC Yes Sir. I liked and subscribed. Look forward to seeing more of your videos.
@@robjtko welcome! we have a lot of exciting stuff coming up
I use a smal sodablaster for the soot
we are trying to use the pass through for a larger piece, any advice, we can't make it work
I have to ask, are you using the stock lens? how many passes and do you adjust the head height by pass? My experience with 1/2 birch is 1st pass only about 1/4” deep…2nd pass only 1/8” deeper and 3pass I see glowing embers in the canyon of the cut….Ive never been able to cut all the way thru. and that is at setting of 8 speed and 75%. End up finishing the cut with a band saw or scroll saw.
I wish there was a school to teach how to input the cuts into the machine, I have no background in CNC or other type of knowledge but would love to make stuff.
There’s definitely a lot that goes into and it can be hard to approach without direct guidance for sure. We’re slowly but surely working on online classes from our shop to give makers a jumping off point.
@@MakersWorkshopLLC I would definitely love to get information on exactly where to start, what books to buy, where to buy ready made templates and especially how the heck does someone tell the program the exact dimensions.
Thanks for the video! Would you recommend this laser to build cabinet doors? Or would I be better off with a 4x4 Cnc? The burning edges are concerning, especially when using mdf material.
For cabinet doors I would go with the CNC. Check out pcncinc.com they make great affordable industrial CNC machines. We have their 5x10 model and love it. They have smaller ones on the site and can add custom features depending on your particular needs.
Dude, your warehouse is full of work benches! How do you get anything done, lol?
Any issues with exposed laser cut plywood? Would veneer banding help cover plywood edges or is that overkill and not needed?
I heavily coated it in finish and it’s held up perfectly for me. I’m not a huge fan of edge banding myself.
wow looks great, I have a Laguna EX myself and I cant seem to dial in on the setting for 1/5 inch plywood, would you be able to share your settings and the lens that you use?
1/5”? I am assuming you are asking about the 1/2”?
I used the stock 63.5mm ZnSe focal lense that came on our machine.
The power settings that worked for me were power at 40% and speed of 5 for the 1/2” material.
@@MakersWorkshopLLC yes indeed, I mean 1/2 inch, wow there must be something wrong with my laser then, I use speed 0.5 inch p/ second and 90% power to cut the board that I tested on. Thank you very much for your reply.
@@MrTei33 I am going at 5mm per second which is .2 inches per second. I found that the speed impacted way more than the power did. If I pop the power up and double the speed it doesn’t cut through.
@@MrTei33 and at 40% mine is running at 25-28 MA the max MA on my machine is 32.
Depending on what you are using for software that number is probably the better one to go off of for power.
@@MakersWorkshopLLC got it, I also find that thew laser was a bit out of focus, after a tune up it cuts like butter, thank you so much.
What do you think about the speed of cutting is it worth it as compared to other methods
It’s certainly not lightening speed, but I’d say it’s faster than if I were doing this by hand and also adds in the perfect precision. Additionally it’s hands off time so while it’s running I can do other things as long as I’m keeping an eye on it. I hope that helps.
@@MakersWorkshopLLC thanks i have a 100w laser will try to make something like this
Man I would like to know how powerful is your ventilation? You have no smoke while in my laser is like I am cooking a chicken
Are you still liking the Laguna laser? I’ve been looking at this same one.
We still very much like it, if I was getting another laser I would happily get another one.
I'm thinking sold for about 7k
How is Laguna still in business? They are a very shady company. Buyer beware. They buy chinese brands and slap their own label on and offer zero tech support. Laguna is a total scam.
Obviously I can only speak to our experience, but our laguna tools have all been fantastic and the couple of times we’ve needed customer support it’s been top notch and very personalized (ex: one on one phone call with one of their engineers)
I have several Laguna tools in my shop and have had nothing but great service and support. Received my EX 150 last weekend and everything is moving smooth as expected.
holy crap are you on the spectrum. this is good. you see and do stuff the norms don't. keep doing what you do mate.
