    Taking money out of the equation, would you pick a cable or wireless groupset?

      Wireless. I really hate dealing with cables

    • @topspot4834

      Cable, just prefer mechanical cause I don't want to introduce charging to an activity I do to escape the technological world we live in ... Plus there's something almost romantic to a mechanical bike IMO

      Cable just because I like the click. X01 on my Supercaliber and I love it. I have Red and Force AXS on my road and cross bikes. So ik how nice they are and I certainly love the 11 speed mechanical of CX1. But on the mtb, mechanical all the way.

    Nice groupset, but...
    I was thinking in upgrade my GX 1x11 to the latest mechanical SRAM GX 1x12 mechnical Lunar groupset, until I realized that for the price of the XD cassette alone I could buy the Shimano SLX cassette, XT shifter and derailleur and the Microspline freehub.
    Good luck to SRAM in their princing strategy. I'm not buying at these prices.

    • @diehardbikes
      @diehardbikes Год назад

      Ok, you've got me there. The prices are extremely high. But I guess if that's the hold up, then you don't ride as much as I do.

    • @bikeradar
      @bikeradar  Год назад

      We'd like to know where you've seen all of that for less than a GX cassette! an SLX shifter, XT derailleur and shifter and a replacement freehub for less than £130 is impressive

    • @GuilhermeTheobald
      @GuilhermeTheobald Год назад

      I Live in Brazil and the cheapest GX Cassette I can find local or abroad is US$ 180,00, and for that money I bought the XT RD and shifter for US$100,7, the SLX cassette for US$65,00 and the freehub went for US$63,50, mostly in Aliexpress.
      Now that I made the math, turned up over 50 bucks off the GX cassette I mentioned, and I would have to buy the XD freehub anyway.
      Their lack of a cheaper XD Cassette is the main reason what drove me off from remaining on the SRAM ecosystem. The other small one is the 52 tooth jump looks horrible.

    I'd be one of those more-money-than-skill buyers that would jump at this upgrade, and my XC bike *is* built with an UDH, but I'll be sticking with GX Eagle AXS due to the wider compatibility. I *already know* how fast that shifts, and how to modulate my pedaling to sync with it, I don't need an electric brain making me wait for my shift point.

    "best value" is quite arguable here, when it costs as much as a decent hardtail (used to) costs.

    • @diehardbikes

      Used to is a key point. Considering they haven't cost that for over 10 years.

    • @bikeradar
      @bikeradar  Год назад

      it's all relative of course, compared to some things, lots of bicycle components are not cheap, but when this performs as well as something costing 3x the price in the case of XX SL, this seems great value when the only real downside is extra weight

    I understand the derailleur can't work with old cassete and chain, but what about the crankset, why does it need to be replaced too? Do the teeth have a different spacing?
    I just got the old GX AXS and I'm pretty happy with it, just worried about durability, which I can see the new one looks a lot more robust, but the price (of the whole group) is at a tough point. I understand there's no competition for this type of product but they would truly take the whole market if the price was more reasonable.

    • @adampokowski
      @adampokowski Год назад

      I believe the rollers on the chain are larger, and the chainline is a few MM different. I think you could get away with using old cranks but you would definitely need to use a T-Type compatible chainring.

    • @bikeradar
      @bikeradar  Год назад

      Unfortunately not, and its not just the flat top chain that stops you. The new cassette is 2.5mm further outboard, and with no adjustment screws on the derailleur you can't the new derailleur to work with the old cassette, it just won't move far enough.
      What we would be interested to try is the new cassette with the old derailleur... No idea if it would work, so there's a challenge people of the internet, find out for us!

      Hard to argue with that, as previous GX AXS can be found very cheaply now.

      Dec 2023 and it’s getting harder to argue that the last gen is better value. The GX AXS upgrade kit with shifter, rd, battery/charger went down to $400 USD and now hovering back around $500-600 USD. While the GX Transmission full group is $1100 USD. But it includes chain/cassette/crankset on top of the new features.

    • @bikeradar
      @bikeradar  Год назад +1

      We would say it comes down to preference, in terms of actual shifting speed, older AXS may have the edge going from one extreme of the cassette to the other, but comparing shifting under load, Transmission is a good step forward.
      But you can still buy the old stuff so whatever your preference, you have your cake and eat it!
