Would you be interested in a "grip database" of common simracing wheels? I think it could be of good help to find out which wheel works best for your hands.

Ohh yes yes yes. Living where I am, it’s near impossible to try before I buy.

Are the grips on GSI wheels interchangeable?
Personally I think all wheels should interchangeable grips and offer different grip sizes for their customers, like small, medium, large etc.

Might be useful for some people, but if the manufacturers allow 3D-scans, they just should provide an STL itself.

I worked full time doing this for quality control for injection molded plastic parts. Best job I ever had, I was watching youtube the whole workday while scanning stuff.

I would LOVE a mode in iRacing and other sims where you can use the model of your actual wheel to replace the virtual one. I race exclusively in VR and being able to operate on something other than muscle memory would be wonderful.

Great Idea! Build an open-source wheel STL model database. Maybe other sim racers with such hardware can contribute!? Hope the companies like/allow it.

Awesome video! 3D scanners are definitely useful in sim racing. Have you guys checked out photogrammetry? It's another cool tech where you can create detailed 3D models just by taking a bunch of photos. Imagine capturing the track details with just your phone camera! 🚗💨📸

I have tried photogrammetry a couple times to scan a couple wheels/enclosures from thrustmaster and other companies to try and help modify them for ppl that need adaptations for disabilities.
A lot of especially lower end wheels don't have clutched paddles which some people require to use as gas/brake.
I helped make a couple Thrustmaster wheels work as standalone USB devices and added clutch paddles to them and it took a TON of iteration to measure, model, print, and repeat.
Being able to scan the original wheel and use it as a base for modifications would be super helpful.

I think it'd be really cool to do this but after cutting it, keep both grips, and add a Primitive shape (rectangle for instance) just to connect the 2 grips at the same distance as the real wheel. Then for not much filament you're getting as close to an impression of the size and feel of the wheel size and grips!

Are you able to put the scans into a program like fusion360 ? I could see this being great for creating parts based off/for existing items!
