  • In this video we are looking at the Dodge Magnum! This was a muscle car mixed with a wagon, brothers of the Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 also on the same LX Platform. Some loved it, some hated it, but you can't deny it was interesting and unique. The Magnum was only around for 4 model years before being cancelled. I also go over 6 major flaws and reasons that I felt caused this car to be cancelled. Watch along for a full history of this car from concept in 2003 to its cancellation in 2008!

      But awful sells.
Sorry but for most people a car is an appliance. The Journey has more practical space, better fuel economy, more seats, better visibility, smaller footprint, and a lower price.
And quite frankly I don’t think I’d want to drive something so ostentatious. When these were new I was driving a V70R Volvo wagon. It looked like every boring Volvo on the road... until you were seeing the taillights receding at a very rapid rate.

I really enjoyed my Magnum RT. Easy to work on and very responsive to modifications. I added a MBRP 3" stainless exhaust and loved the sound. Upgraded to SRT8 suspension, brakes and wheels. Really hauled ! Could swallow an amazing amount of gear or cargo too. When I finally traded it into get a Mustang the Ford dealership gave me a really good trade in because it was in great shape and they had become scarce and in high demand. It was resold in less than a week ! My only complaints was the rather bland interior and noisy, short lived front suspension components.

I owned a 2007 Pacifica with the 4.0 liter and six speed auto. It felt like you were driving a sports car. Very little body lean, fantastic ride and went around corners a lot better than a 4500 lb vehicle had any right to. Its higher center of gravity did seem to hurt it. The interior just exuded quality. The dash layout was great. The 7 passenger interior was very flexible. With the low ratio first gear it would bolt off the line. You had to actually roll on the throttle or it would spin the front wheels. The Navigation display in the middle of the speedo was a innovation I'm surprised no one else copied. The second Gen Pacifica was lust a gussied up Grand Caravan. They were a joke compared to the original. And it was the original. The Pacifica was the first crossover and it was a brilliantly executed vehicle that Chrysler neglected in its marketing.
The only reason I sold mine is I lost my job and needed the money. Wish I had it back.

Wshington State Patrol had a number of the SXT's on the highways too. All were the 'midnight blue' and they were easily able to catch up to whomever with just the standard 250 HP 3.5 motor. Washington SP decided to mark their Magnums with the party lights, etc. Mt SXT is the midnight blue color too and often folks would kinda slow down on freeways when they were fast approaching from behind. They'd get next to me, give me look, and then fly away.
I've read some have had issues with the tie rod ends. Mine on my 2007 SXT got a bit loose at 70k miles so I replaced with after- market quality tie rods and the after market- rods are manufactured with grease fittings so they should last a lot longer that OEM's. That's all for suspension and I now have 190k miles on the car.
Still runs silky smooth just like the day bought it and it looks as if my SXT just rolled out of the showroom.

Years ago I was browsing the web for different call styles to kill time and I just happened to come across the Magnum for the first time and I immediately know I wanted one. The sheer concept of a 'muscle wagon' was so odd and different that I fell in love with the idea in general. Last year, I was finally able to get one and I have loved ever since. It has power to spare, it has room for my friends, it can carry loads of cargo. It basically has everything I could want in a car.
I am very practical minded, so I never wanted a super-charged powerhouse with less square footage of storage than a mousetrap. I love mini-vans and larger cars because of their versatility. The Magnum offers that AND enough power to kick some ass. Love, love, love my Magnum!

Theres only two other box chevys in town, one is driven by the original owner (73 year old lady) and the other is by some shady trailer park guy. I go back to hangout with people every weekend and guarenteed if i drive the impala, im getting stopped. Ive pulled up infront of my friends house before and an officer pulled up and flipped his lights on. I counted the "lisence plate light malfunction warnings" (which works btw, i restored the whole car and put a big block with a quite exhaust in it) i had 5 warnings in one month. With all 5 of my other cars ive gotten pulled over once which was my failt for doing 34 mph in a 30.. i support my leos but c'mon man profiling a car that bad? Really? I have 165,000 on it and my daughter wants it as her first car. Third, Chrysler continued to build this car with Chrysler trim for export to Europe until '12 model year, so the sales talk is BS. Fourth in '13, Chrysler changed wheelbase of 300 and Charger to 120" (like Magnum) which means more shared parts, so more BS about sales. This leads me to put credibility in story of executive who just hated the model. Buick has Regal Tour X (wagon). Volvo has new V90 (wagon). Mercedes still offers E Class wagon. Yeah, there's no market. How about Chrysler has no idea how to sell product!

Great video I have been looking forward to this upload. The Magnum was a beautiful car that I think people were unsure of and like you said we live in a world of SUV's and crossovers which makes me see why Dodge thought the journey would be the answer but yet another vehical that fell short of it's competitors. The thing about the Magnum was there is really nothing else like it and I think that profits would have eventually of gone up if they gave the Magnum a chance. I sold my beautiful 05 sxtMagnum for a 2007 Dodge nitro and have to say both treated me well and we're more striking then any other vehicle I saw on the street. I've owned a couple Magnums and still have a 2007 R/T. I will always have a Magnum in my garage. My first one, a 2006 R/T, was the only new car I've ever bought straight off the lot. I Loved these cars when they first came out and just had to have one. The first couple years I owned it, nearly every where I stopped, for gas, snacks, the stop light, where ever, people would tell me how cool it was and ask questions. But one thing I noticed is it was definitely a Love/Hate in people. I remember walking into a steak house with my brother and there was a brand new Cool Vanilla SXT parked out front. I had been telling him about this new car I was buying but he had no clue what car I was talking about so I was excited to show him one. He took one look, scrunched up his face and said disgustedly, "You wanna buy that?" One time when showing my new car to a friend, he referred to it as a "Gangster Car". And that wasn't the first time I'd heard that term when people looked at it. After buying the car I took my brother for a ride and he changed his outlook right away. I think he said, "Holy crap this thing is fast!" or something to that effect. In any case, It was a niche car and I don't think it would fare any better in todays market. Especially one filled with millennials who couldn't give a shit whether a car was "cool" or not as long its "pretty" and cheap and doesn't stand out from what their other idiot stick friends are driving.

The Magnum name was revived in 2004 for the 2005 model year, as a station wagon based on the Chrysler LX platform. The new Magnum was a badge engineered station wagon version of the Chrysler 300 manufactured at the same plant in Brampton, Ontario, Canada. The Magnum had four engine options; the SE features the 190 hp 2.72 L LH V6, the SXT had the 250 hp (190 kW) 3.5 L V6, and the (RT) had the new 340 hp 5.7 L Hemi V8. The SRT-8 has a 425 hp 6.1 L Hemi engine. All-wheel drive became an option in 2005 on SXT and RT models.

I bought an '05 Magnum R/T this January. Off a used car lot in Sacramento. It only had 82,760+ miles on it. Clean, 2 owner car. Dark green in color. I picked it up for $13.2k. I love it. It's the perfect car for a growing family like mine who are looking to move forward. It has the room and versatility we need. And with how crazy people drive these days, the 5.7 Hemi provides me with all the power I need. It's strictly factory stock, but I do plan to update and upgrade it a little. By putting in both a large or long ratio diff gear and a Gear Vendors overdrive, the mileage will improve significantly. By adding aftermarket heads and a new exhaust system, I could get it up to 400 hp. With that combo, it'll be set to keep up with anything in terms of speed, power, and economy.

The original Dodge Magnum was a 2 door car built by Dodge from 1978-79 and was officially the last of the B-Body cars. Then was resurrected for 2005-2008 as a sport wagon.

I looked at it as a great road tripper. The SRT-8 was the one I would have bought. Muscle and comfort with the option of actually sleeping comfortably in it made it the ultimate road trip machine.
I may still buy one with low miles. Unfortunately there aren't that many around with such a short production run.

I had a 2005 RT, I loved the power, the stance and the muscle. I had 22’s which looked great but my freeway mileage was around 23 mpg. Not bad I thought for a Hemi but then I put original RT 18’s on it and immediately got 25+.
My only complaint which I am sure you are aware is the 5.7’s were notorious for sucking valve seats and at 157K that happened. So I had a new 5.7 installed, had the NAG1 rebuilt and was getting nearly 30mpg after break in. I still love that car but I had to let her go. I gave it to my son to continue with her renovation. I did the drive train and steering. He is going to do the paint and interior and then she will be fresh. I absolutely hope they will return one day and we only need 3 models. SXT with the nice Pentestar, and RT with the awesome 6.1 and the SRT8 but badged as a Hellcat Magnum!
    Yes I would buy one.
