The Dodge Magnum SRT8 is one weird attempt at building a sleeper wagon. With a 425HP Hemi V8, rear wheel drive, and a ton of cargo space - it was unlike anything Dodge had ever built. The car community has a love for wagons, so why wasn't this beast talked about more? Let's go for a drive and talk all about it.

My very first experience going "fast" as a kid was when the crazy old lady at church asked if I'd like to come for quick ride around the block in her magnum SRT8. I was 12 and had never felt anything more than 200 horsepower at maybe 3/4 throttle. So THIS lady floors it and does a quick 0-60 pull right off the rip and I can honestly say she changed my life forever. That moment made me a car guy. The sound! The sheer experience of G forces pinning me to the seat. My vision literally blurred from my occipital lobe being presses into the back of my skull. It made me feel terrified and ALIVE ar the same time!

You just described my entire childhood except it was a 1974 Dodge Charger that my dad custom ordered from Dodge with a stage 3 race kit upgrade for the big block 400 magnum engine it came with. He use to scare me to death nearly in that car. It felt like the front wheels were going to come off the ground every time he floored it even at high speeds.
He gave me the car on my 21st birthday nearly 24 years ago now, and I still have it. Less than 100 cars built with his exact configuration that year. It has the big block 400 magnum engine, 400 transmission, and 400 rear differential. It has both the Ralleye and RT packages. Bucket seats, slap shift, round gauges including tachometer, air conditioning, cruise control, and rear window defroster blower. It basically has every option available that year.

Bought a 06 R/T new mainly for the wife to drive but, I'll admit I always had an obsession with station wagons. One thing I never liked was how high the doors came up, I like cruising with windows down and arm out the window, not in this thing. Electrical problems plagued the car around 100k along with the constant engine tick, which never got worse and didn't affect the way it ran, which it ran well. Never regretted buying it, they are just cool looking.

Americans and Canadians used to be absolutely in love with wagons. From the '50s through the '70s, wagons were "the" favorite family and grocery-getter cars. Fold the back seat flat and 4 kids could sleep in the back in their sleeping bags at the campgrounds. Every family I knew had a wagon and they were a blast. My uncle used to strap two canoes to the roof, pack the car with camping gear and 5 kids and pull a fullsize camper-trailer and drive 4 hours to the lake. Good times. There were wagons everywhere at one time, such as Pontiac GTO and Tempest Wagon, Chevy Kingswood, Ford Fairlane and Torino, Olds Vista Cruiser 442, Dodge Coronet Wagon/Super Bee, Chevy Chevelle Wagon, and many more. Always thought it was a cool car now that I drive it daily while my Duramax Dually is in the body shop. 230k miles and is still smacking 5.0s and 6.2s. Those 5.7 hemis are no slouches and are very modification friendly. Flowmaster exhaust on it too and loud does it hum cruising and sounds like a beast when its rolling out.

I used to have an 05 Magnum RT rwd. I bought it to use as a combination fun toy and tow rig with decent MPG. It did both just fine. It had a couple of issues common to all early-build Hemi cars - first, the front end alignment was way off due to an engine cradle build issue, so the thing pulled to the right horribly. My local alignment shop was able to solve the issue by aligning the front with a ton of cross-caster (which is what the TSB that Chrysler finally released also reccommended). Second, the ECU was a little different from the later cars, so it kept frying the Diablosport tuner I had bought and failed to take a tune correctly. Diablosport, after RMAing my tuner twice, finally was forced to admit that it was a known issue and that their tuner wouldn't work on my car.
I ended up selling the car after only about a year because I no longer needed a tow rig, and it was new enough that it was just too damn expensive and time-consuming to work on and modify. The price has come down enough now though, that I'm planning a 6.4 truck hemi swap into a 3.5-powered Magnum. It should get the same MPGs as an RT, with a 5h!tload more power and torque.

Those engines can also take long term and constant abuse way more than a high strung (read:highly boosted) 4cyl import.
