As always, great instructions. I truly like that you mention the #4 rope (Size) you use, and the length, which in this case is 36 inches. Not many mention this and it's extremely helpful.
Yea but did you actually say how long it should be or how many turns is on the spring .....noooo cause not everyone has an original owned stihl or echo saw they last a long time dude! Think think before you make a vid Signed your local pissed off mechanic
Thank you so very much for sharing your repair skills. And video skills - good camera work, good lighting, good sound - consistent throughout. Our yardman brought his Stihl over because he needed help changing the pull cord. Now he thinks I'm a genius.
Welcome to the future! I figured i'd check for a video before fixing my ms250. Very clear instructions and helpful tips. (which I thought there might be) thanks.
As always you dont just tell a person what to do, you tell them why that is the way to do it, so they can take this knowledge and apply it to different models or situations! you rock! thxs Dony.
Thanks for a great video explaining this procedure. You are a good teacher and your editing is great. Thanks for being concise and to the point. This helped me change my starter cord after having it break. $1.00 worth of cord and your video got me back to cutting wood!
thanks Donnie I actually broke my cord on my 250 today thought I knew how to do it but wanted to watch your video to make sure thanks very much for your help and Merry Christmas to you take care
Had my neighbor come over today with one of these things and sure enough I knew I would find some help with it on RUclips!!! Much appreciated on the instructions on how to re-thread this thing. I wasn't sure if it was the same thing as my Stihl MS391 so I figured better to be safe than sorry. Regardless, Thanks Again for this video. Made my job 100x Easier on re-threading the pull cord.
Great job, worked out fine for me! I used 36' inch & 6 turns on your specs for the pull cord worked out perfectly on my Stihl MS250! Thanks for the details on the entire process, your the man, Dave!
Thanks for the video, had this bookmarked for the past year since I knew it was going to need it at some point. Ordered some rope on amazon as well. 'Lo and behold, rope got stuck pulled out and had to do the replacement. This video made it pretty damn painless, even though my saw is about ten years older than the one you used.
Just got done replacing my pull cord on a STIHL 036. With this video and a $1.35 of #4 pull cord my chainsaw is ready for action! Thanks donyboy73 for the great video!
Great job on that video. I looked it up because I have to replace the cord on my MS 180 tomorrow. I was thinking about using parachute cord, thinking it might be tougher, but not sure. I create lots of instructional videos, too (mostly in the nursing/medical world), so I really appreciate how well you did this one. Thanks for sharing that info with us!
@@mannyo2909 , I ended up having other problems with the lightweight MS 180, so I did not replace the cord. I ended up buying the MS 250 instead. I'm not sure if the parachute cord would work on the 250, because the cranking pull is totally different from that on the 180. Pulling the cord on the 180 has almost no resistance, since it easily winds some kind of spring that then releases and cranks the engine. However, on the 250, there is a direct connection to the engine, so the pull pressure on the cord is MUCH stronger. I think on the 250, I'd use the pull cord from Stihl. Just my thoughts. :)
Thanks so much for making this video. Using your clear directions I was able to replace the pull rope on my MS250. I didn't have any #4 starter rope so I was able to use a length of parachute cord, which seems to be about the same diameter. Just started it up now so I guess I'm good to go. Thanks!
I recently had problem on my trimmer every time I started I pulled the rope out of the plate. the knot was clean so was the hole. I reinstalled it and I could pull like crazy on it and it would stay put but as soon as I was to start the machine it popped out again, easily. Clean as a whistle, hole and knot intact. now I installed slightly longer rope as I thought it might be that I was pulling it fully. everything okay for now and it better be if it wants to win my trust again! :D lousy swed
My older 170 IS DIFFERENT THE OUTSIDE HOUSING stretches left and right over the two filler caps Oil and Gas somehow i have to release the chord that drop from the caps in order to get the housing off Having difficulty seeing how they release but the video is spot on for re'winding the chord
Thank You! .... Easier than I thought thanks to you. Replaced with the same size starter rope that came with the MS250 new, not sure the type (#) , but the length was only 30'
With your guidance, I replaced the pull rope on my Stihl MS310. I am now emboldened to replace the sprocket and `remove and clean the carburetor. Thank you!
Great video work donyboy, with it I should be able to finish cutting enough wood for the winter... 20 minutes in to half a day of chainsaw work and a broken rope. This winter is getting loooooooooooong
Thanks very much and blessings to you for sharing your God-given talents. Your video gave me the encouragement to tackle this job. Keep up the great work!
That is nice information to know and if I can get my MS-250 to start, I may end up having to replace my rope. Right now the only saw I have which works fine is my old Poulan saw. It have given me great service since getting it in 2000 new. Since my Stihl saw never worked for me, I just purchased a new Poulan Pro which I have not used yet. My main problem with the Stihl saw is getting it to start. I tried the instructions which came with the saw, but it didn't work. The Stihl saw have been in the shop several times and it still don't start like it should, but the other saw starts just fine.
great video as always. I put a dab of super glue on the knots I tie and it works well. Thanks. I do small engine repair here in The Napa Valley calif. The sun is out and the machines are coming.
Check all the wiring before replacing the module including soldering the connections and ohm check the switch and magnatron coil to see if there are any problems anywhere. Usually the modules dont wear out. The module can be shorted which means it will not work at all. Since you have weak spark go over the wiring, checking for places that it might have rubbed through arcing or shorting to ground. Finally use an ohm meter to check the specs on the coil and off switch.
I've got the same chainsaw and did the cord replacement. The cord is nice and taught. For some reason though, after I've replaced the cover/screws, it is not engaging the crankcase. Any suggestions?
Rotary offers the NOVA ii module part no 8786. Stens also has one under part no 440-465 called Megafire ii. Oregon direct part number is 33-053. Any of these should work for that B&S 5hp.
Great no bull channel. I have put in new recoil springs and reinstalled old springs that got away and jumped out. What's the best smartest way to get these little tigers back on? I know some springs come with a wire on them that makes it easy.
In one of your other videos I think you recommend using white lithium grease on the recoil rotor - in this one you use the oil / transmission fluid mix. Do you recommend one over the other?
l have a Giantz 75cc 22'' chainsaw. This chainsaw has 2 springs, one ( assuming) sucks the rope in which is 6mm, other is 12mm starts the engine. After l changed the snapped spring (12mm) Everything was ok till l tried starting it. There was only one revolution which wasnt enough to start it. l fooled around with for a while but, l coudnt work it out. Where did l go wrong? Thank you for sharing such a helpful video :)
So young back then. Best starter rope video on RUclips.
Of all the different videos on RUclips about replacing this cord, YOURS was the most helpful! Thank you.

Your video was perfect. You helped me do the repair right first time and with confidence. Well explained. Thanks
Hey, I sure appreciate your expertise on these subjects. They are very clear and easy to understand.
Thanks again!!!
I have done this a few times on a Stihl 044! it has the Stihl Elasto-start handle for easier starting! thanks for the great repair video!
Well done young man. Concise and complete. Thank you!
Excellent review that demonstrates “show” not “tell”
Don, I watched your video and followed your instructions. I put on a new cord. Works perfectly. Thanks.

Dave Kana thanks for the proper length mesurment, was wondering about that since mine was fixed a few times.

Great vid as usual. Helpful in getting proper rewind tension! Thanks
I found a beat up 041 and need to get that recoil going again, looks very similar to the MS250. Thanks so much for posting.
Donyboy73 I just wanted to thank you! Your uploads on the repairs are awesomely good! Thank you sir! James

Where did you go to get the cord? I don't want to go to a small engine repair shop and spend a costly amount for their stuff.

I just successfully replaced the rope on my MS 180c
Thanks for your help, you're spot on.
i always add a bit of trans oil because it seems to stick better, but regular oil will do

sometimes the fuel lines need to be replaced on thos ryobi trimmers, u can start the screw at 2 turns out and adjust it from there
i prefer husqvarna and stihl, what do you plan to do with your saw?
