    Before stripimg down the clutch etc. use a piece of electric wire, 1.5mm and try to unblock the oiler hole as far down as you can, then use a piece of 25lb fishing line and do the same, the fishing line will go around the bend right through to the oil pump and clear any blockage there. 99% of the time this is the cure.

    Well-made, no-nonsense, professional video. You don't waste our time with needless conversation like so many of the other self-help videos out there, you get right to the point and tell us what we need to know. Great camera angles, good closeups, good lighting, attention to detail, and excellent descriptions of the procedures and what to watch out for, including safety recommendations. Excellent job, keep those well-made videos coming, they are greatly appreciated!

    This video stands the test of time. The close ups and detailed explanations instill confidence to make these repairs by the owners. The Stihl chainsaw we own still has a plaque that reads "Made in Germany". I was using it last year to help my neighbor clear a large downed tree, but most of the way into clearing the tree it stopped oiling. It's been sitting for a year now and this spring I can finally sit outside, hopefully a warm sunny day, and get into this. All I need is the 27 star tool. Thanks again for all the details, including tools and screw locations. And, this isn't the first video of yours I've seen. Much thanks DB.

    This video is perfect! I have an MS-250 Chainsaw, and noticed the chain wasn't getting oil. Followed your instructions. Turns out the O-ring on that plastic piece was pinched. Not installed correctly at the factory. I ordered the same parts you did, just in case. It's really quite easy if you see someone do it once or twice, and know what to expect. Thanks for these great videos.

    You produce a very nice and informative video. Good job. I also like the fact that you do not edit out any possible scenerios that could occur during the process, the flying clip for example, or a forgotten screw. This happens to the even the best mechanics, I appreciated that fact, some mechanics let their ego get in the way by not showing simple little mishaps that can happen. Great job, thank you! Subbed BTW...

    FYI, Stihl molds a small "diagram" of the bottom of the oiler pump on most saws, to help to align correctly when reinstalling. You can clearly see this "diagram" at 8:54 between the oiler hole and left edge of the screen. On the MS250, there is also a small divet near the hole to help with alignment. Again, this can be seen at 8:54.

    Thankyou so much Donyboy. The other day, I replaced all of the oiler components on my MS230 which had stopped supplying oil to the bar and chain. Your very clear explanation and instructions made it easy. For those in the UK contemplating any DIY maintenance on their Stihl machinery (or indeed most garden machinery) I can recommend L&S Engineers for all parts supplies. Clear parts diagrams on their website, competitive prices and quick delivery. The combination of DonyBoy's clear instructions and the availability of parts makes servicing and repairing your own machinery a walk in the park.

    I have a MS290 but many of the steps are similar. The pump on my unit was actually easier to remove, just two bolts and I didn’t have to remove the handle. This video gave me enough info and confidence to do the job.

    Hey Don, just to let you know that I think your videos are really great! With these chainsaws being so expensive to repair I surely appreciate your methods! I just picked up an MS 260 used. Downsizing from my 036 which I had for years and it was just far too costly to repair or replace! Any advice on the 260? This saw is clean and barely used. What are the best things to watch for on this saw, as I am unfamiliar with this model. It is a Pro 260. Should I be making any before use precautions....changing plug etc?

    Do you have any ideas on how to increase the amount of oil flow to the bar and chain for a STIHL MS362. It is 3 years old and out of warranty. I have turned the flow screw all the way to the right (clockwise) and it still doesn't spray oil that can been seen on a piece of wood. I do see oil coming out of the flow hold when the bar and chain is removed. STIHL indicates they had to reduce the amount of oil to comply with the Federal government laws. I feel that the bar and chain fail to receive enough oil to prevent damage to both. Any ideas would be appreciated.

  • @portagepete1
    @portagepete1 3 года назад +1

    After your saw sits for a while it leaks out the oil that is in the pump then you start it and it doesn't pump because it lost it's prime so take the oil cap lose to let air in and see if the oil starts to flow again. If not working next pull the oil feed line off see if oil comes out? Oil will then start coming out the line, put line back on. Next super common thing is your bar oil hole is full of saw dust, clean that out.

    Hey Doc, Thanks for the video. I'd like to know why you recommend to not run the engine at speed without the chain/bar installed. As you indicated during your troubleshooting, it would be a great easy way to test for oil flow.

    • @CarlMadsen
      @CarlMadsen 2 года назад

      You don't need to run the engine at all to test the oiler - just rotate the clutch drum (without the bar and chain, and with brake off) about 10 turns clockwise, and you should see oil flowing out of the hole that matches up to the bar oiler hole.

    Sometimes also the oil pump needs priming after replacing the oil tube and filter. That can be made by using a pressurized air pistol to the complete system at the oil tank cap to force the oil to start flowing. Some saws do not run oil before this operation.

    Just a great DIY chainsaw repair video! When my oiler stopped, I didn't have a clue how to fix it. I found your video, enjoyed watching it and knew immediately I could do the repair because of your excellent explanation and high quality videography.
    Two things I found by accident during my repair: The handle bolts will fit the oil pump for extraction, so you'll always have an extractor tool.
    And, to clean the small oiler hole, I inserted the oil straw attached to my can of WD40. Give it a good squirt and it flushes out debris.

    Tremendous video! Very well done! I see you made this video about 3 years ago... funny thing... that's almost as long as I've been manually applying oil to my chainsaw! ... I know, but I follow one motto: _Never procrastinate until you absolutely have to._

    Thanks for posting Donyboy. I have the same chainsaw and that breakdown was perfect. My chainsaw throws oil after I took it apart and cleaned it right down to the pump. Not sure if it is throwing the correct amount of oil. Hard to tell if the pump is weak or not. I really appreciate all your videos.

    My MS250 doesn't put much oil on the chain even when everything is clean. It's puking oil out the bottom of the saw and also the area below the muffler, then it runs down the front of the saw. Sounds like my o-ring is bad, and maybe the plastic piece that the o-ring installs on.
    AWESOME VIDEO!

    Thanks for sharing, I have a set of Stihl chainsaws, and it is great to understand the mechanisms involved in their operation. I really appreciate a pro like you taking the time to educate us laypeople on the inner workings of our equipment. Maybe I will do my own maintenance on my 290, of course, my 660 will continue to get professional care.

    @donyboy73, very interesting. All I have seen to remove oil pump is, remove clutch. At which, get behinf it and into pump to remove. So, you can simply remove this by the under side of saw?
    Just noticed today my 250 is not getting oil.Cleaned hole in bar, cleaned oil hole on saw etc.No go, start saw and no oil.Although leaks oil some from bottom of saw? Anyhow, dropped off today at Sthil.See what they say.But next time looks like I could do the pump thing.
    So what is he cause why pump itself craps out? Seems like a issue with these newer saws.
    Ball park, Sthil parts, whats a bar and chain run$? Curious about that.Have not asked around yet.

    Really good video! I have a Stihl 025. I have replaced the oil line but I seem to have a lot of oil leaking from that little hole. No oil seems to be leaking around the oil pump area. Being my first chainsaw, I have a lot to learn and dying to use it but seems to be a lot of oil leaking. Any suggestion? Thanks!

    Excellent ! Im going out to the garage now. A friend gave me an 036 Pro that is not oiling. I found the clutch drum is badly worn.. too much side play on the shaft.. probably not able to drive the gear because the wire came out of the notch... I will be ordering parts. Thanks for the video.
    EDIT: This saw had a melt down in the clutch area.. broken drive gear wire, broken hose coming off oil pump, melted dust cover.. somebody ruined a good saw. Probably not worth fixing unless I buy Chinese parts or find a parts saw.

    We have a 311y... turning clockwise does not remove the clutch - it never actually gives resistance. Is this simply a difference of models? Or are we doing something incorrect?

    My MS 250 is less than a year old and it'd burn the chain about every 5 min when cutting into a log. Hickory, oak, maple or pine. Would start out GREAT!! and in a few minutes start burning up the chain. Clean rinse and repeat. Oil flows good if you're not cutting wood....haha!!! I need to bring it in under warranty, but I know what I'm gonna hear. "works good, we can't find anything wrong". Oil comes out fine, I've cleaned bar guides/slots and even squirt some bar oil all over for a bump. It just doesn't like 2-4 minutes straight of cutting logs. New chain and and all.

    Foolish me -- if I had done more research before buying a 10-year-old MS 250 I probably wouldn't have got it. Since this video has had more than a million hits, obviously the Stihl 250 has a real big problem with its oiling components -- as I found out with the 250 I just bought! I got it as a backup for my 19-year-old MS 290, which has seen a lot of wood (6-7 cords a year), but you know what? It's never had a bit of trouble with its oiler. It had a carb problem, but that's fixed now. Anyone want to buy my 250 from me so I don't have to tear into it? 200 bucks and it's yours. (great video, by the way!)

    Hi. Very nice and clear instructions. I have an oiler problem with an MSA220. Seem like the pump is the same, but the clutch looks a little different. Got any experience changes oil pump on the new MSA line? Any thing different to the process?

    Why did you not use the 025 oil pump, instead of the ms 250 oil pump. They are identical, but the 025 oil pump is a high capacity oil pump. The only difference is their color - the 025 oil pump is gold in color. My 250’s have the 025 oil pump in them. All the new Stihl saws have low capacity oil pumps, pursuant to EPA directives.

    Just installed a high volume pump in my MS250. My saw has NEVER oiled the bar and chain that good. I’m honestly convinced my pump was junk from the factory. Had it in the shop twice and they said it was fine. But doing the ole’ cardboard test, I never had oil slinging onto it. But I sure do now 😮!

    I apologize for not reading all the comments, but I'm looking at a Stihl ms180 or ms 250 to replace my older 026 that I sold. I was wondering how much use the saw got out of it before they chain oilier went bad? I had a similar issue on my 026, but that was just a slogged oilier port. Easy fix. Thanks!!
