@@moisty254 Surely you must be correct. Everything *is on the internet. In fact, I'll let you prove it to us all since over a century of combustion knowledge is instantly at your fingertips, right? Answer this easy one: You have an 850cfm 4 corner idle (adjusted perfectly) atop a single-plane manifold attached to a 500-ish c.i. V8 with a moderate street cam. Spark coutesy of a centrifugal advance timed capacitive discharge ignition capable of multiple hits per cycle near idle. Distributor timing is perfect (and so is coil voltage level). So is fuel pressure. No wiring issues. All new parts. No emissions equipment or sensors to deal with. No ECU. No mechanical issues. Just old-fashioned carb heaven. But she won't run - at all. Even at idle. A couple coughs if you are lucky. You tried adjusting everything. What's wrong? What's the telltale sign to check your suspicion in a matter of seconds?
That's right. You have no clue. Why? Because intuition is not in any database and it can't be "Googled".
BTW, I asked an OG engine builder that same question and he knew instantly.

Fantastic video Steve, thank you. I repair small powered equipment for my organization and they have established procedures for clearing a flooded saw in an emergency situation. Much like what you did, they put an emphasis on no tools for the sake of "worst case scenario". The method taught by our people is a "two person" starting procedure where one person is holding the throttle wide open and the other is attempting to start it. I'm not sure if the reasoning for it is that there will always be two people available no matter what (this is true), but seeing that using the right positioning and technique allows you to achieve it by yourself is a game changer. Thanks again and keep at it.

I purchased an off-brand saw mainly due to financial reasons, with the intent of trying to mill some lumber for my hobbies. I've had the saw for a few months, (28" bar) and haven't been able to get it started since day one. Fortunately, I really haven't been ready to do any milling until recently when we had 11 trees taken down on our property, including a couple of 80' pines. It was now or never so I began researching and found your video on unflooding the chainsaw. I had assumed I was flooding it every time since I often ended with the strong smell of gasoline. Your video not only educated this novice on how engines get flooded, but showed me a couple ways to clear it up. I did the "tool" approach and removed the spark plug, etc. EVERYTHING you said worked great, plus I now know in hot weather (like here in FL most of the year), I may not have to choke at all. I just finished my first milling cut on an oak log only about 5 ft long. I cannot explain how excited I am to continue my processing and create a little backlog of lumber for future projects. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. (I was ready to bite the bullet and take it to a mechanic who would have gotten it stated but never trained me how to do it right.

Hey! Great basic info and demonstration. Good job . Even though I've used this procedure on different engines, ...I enjoyed your persistence in your pull starting because you knew the outcome of your persistent pulling.....a running engine. Thanks for info and a great presentation! Encouraged me.

A huge THANK YOU from Germany! You just saved my timber cutting class tomorrow, as my Jonsered wouldn't start yesterday. Dealer couldn't figure it out - wanted to send the saw in - which would have left me with no saw for tomorrow. Took my saw back home instead, checked the spark plug - wasn't wet or crusty - checked sparking and decided to follow your advice on deflodding the carb. Nearly took me as many pull-ups as in your video but in the end it started well. I am really happy - cause i learned to help myself with your help! So thank you very, very much!!

Thanks Steve this worked for me with my Stihl MS250 yesterday exactly as demonstrated! Great to learn after much frustration with non-starting chainsaws! The only difference was that my starter cord was much stiffer and jerkier to pull than it appeared to be in your example. I did not drain fuel through the sparkplug first, so perhaps I had an issue with hydrolock too. Thanks for your videos - great content! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I bought a brand new MS170 today and it would not start - I'm pretty sure I flooded it. I cranked it over a LOT at full choke, but at the time didn't realize what I had done.. I called the place where I bought it and the guy advised me not to pull it more than 3 times at full choke when trying to start it. Still searching, I found your video. Another video recommended a zip tie to squeeze the trigger wide open while I cranked it. I used the zip tie, but not too tight so I could easily slip it - it stays on the 170 now. It took me about 18 pulls to hear the "pop/burp". - after that, I slipped the zip tie off and used my hand to hold it a full throttle. I cranked a couple more times and it started and ran great. I did have a lot of white smoke at first. It's 1:30 AM here and I couldn't wait till morning to try your way - now I can get to sleep.

I've been using chainsaws since about 12 years old in the woods in Newfoundland. I've never had one hydrolock, but have flooded them lots of times. Sometimes the choke is on but the kill switch is engaged without you knowing it. I've always used that same technique to get them started usually within 5 to 10 pulls. Same with snowmobiles and any small engine really. But I've never gone anywhere without the spark plug wrench anyway. So its just as easy to pull the plug, keep the engine turned off and pull er over without compression 5 or 10 times to blow out the excess oil and fuel.
Was babysitting a couple scientists in Placentia Bay once and we were out amongst a bunch of islands in a 15 foot Zodiac. We had a new Johnson outboard that was a three cylinder OIL INJECTED unit. I'd never seen an oil-injected engine before that one. We ran out of gas but I didn't realize the tank had gone dry, so I kept pulling it over trying to re-start it. When I did fill the tank, couldn't start the engine. Felt like cursing. Probably did. But then I realized what had happened. By pulling the cord several times trying to start with a dry tank, the cylinders flooded with oil because the injection pump was going all that time. So I took out the spark plug wrench and got the plugs out of her, pulled er over about twenty times and blew all the oil out . Put the plugs back in and she caught the first pull. We were thirty miles from port. But we'd have been in a world of hurt without a spark plug wrench.

I'm relatively new to chain sawing, was slabbing a log in my back yard, needed to stop the saw for a bit, and couldn't get it restarted.
I suspected that it was flooded, and so went about doing some other tasks for a few minutes before trying again to start the saw...unsuccessfully. Man, I pulled that starter cord a lot of times. I did this several times before looking to youtube for some help.
This was the video that was recommended.
After watching the video I started my saw ON THE FIRST PULL!

I don't know if I was flooded or not, but i was getting no combustion. Ran out of time yesterday and did my work with a nice double-bit ax. I put in a new plug and flipped the bar for good measure, and when I got home from work today I took out the plug and pulled the cord to make sure I had spark (I did). Replaced the plug, pulled the cord ONCE with the trigger throttle wide open and it started right up. Thanks so much man! Saved me from a whole week of frustration. Can't wait to get back to the field. btw husky 450
