I recently bought a Stihl MS 271 and flooded it by accident thinking it was cold. I kid you not... ONE PULL and this trick worked. Thank you for saving my saw.
This video is spot on. I just purchased a 251 and am new to chain saws. I pulled too many times with the choke on, which by the way should only be done about 2-3 times, and flooded the carb. Your how to was incredible. 10 pulls later and the unit was running like a charm. Thank you so much and you're right it saved me lots of money and more importantly, time. A big fan here.
Steve, I’m always amazed at the number of thumbs down. Whenever we have equipment problems of any kind, we’d NEVER bring it to one of those negative ‘experts’. We’d hunt for someone with your level of expertise. This was another great, practical and very useful episode that 99% of us can use. Many thanks!
Thanks Steve! I'm an old carpenter and when I began in the trades all the top dogs kept a chainsaw handy, now 45 years later, although most contractors frown on it I'll still have a Stihl in my arsenal. In all my years of using a saw I never learned how to un-flood my saws. The new saw I have, a Stihl ms210 I seem to consistently flood. Thank you, I again now have a dependable saw.
@@joshuaperez2877I'm not OP but I am a carpenter... a lot of guys just think that if you use a chainsaw you're gonna be a REALLY rough carpenter and probably not do nice, clean work -- that may be true in some cases but there is certainly a place for chainsaws in carpentry, and its amazing what you can do with them in certain applications.
Yeah I messed around with my ms171 for two days.. new spark plug, air filter, fuel filter, new fuel and oil ect. Knew it was getting spark, and gas on the new spark plug. Finally held the trigger down and first pull… fired right up
A masterclass in Show & Tell. Demonstrating that this method works in even the absolute worst-case scenario is genius. Just unflooded mine--thank you! Subscribed!
once again you saved the day. I’m chainsawing a lot more these days and as soon as i smelled the fuel and it wouldn’t start, I knew it was flooded. Your channel always has the fix. I unflooded the saw just as you instructed. Thanks man.
I would like to say “Thank You” for providing your information to us all (mechanically inclined or those of us inept). You helped me after I put chain oil into the fuel tank and vice versa. I followed both videos on chain oil in gas tank and flooding and ta’da ... my Stihl chainsaw is functioning again... May someone be as kind as you are to your fans. Cheers 🍻 My local shop quoted me $200 to fix with a 2 week turnaround. I fixed with your directions in 3 minutes after watching both videos.
This helped me out a lot. Spent 2 hours trying to get mine started after it sat for the last 6 months. I was getting frustrated. Got up this morning at 430am, and got it started in 1 min with your recommendation. Many thanks *salute*
First time ever buying a chainsaw and I genuinely thought it was broken or something. Just tried this and no word of a lie, it started after like 5 or 6 pulls. Great video man, you must have helped so many people with just this video alone. Thank you!
This is the best advice for starting a flooded Stihl chainsaw & was exactly what I needed to do, after watching this video I proceeded to do exactly as instructed with my knee on the top and trigger full, run/on! I’ve been trying all day to get it to stay running and finally this great video help me achieve that thank you so so much,Greatly appreciated😉
Bingo! After trying to start my saw a dozen times over the weekend, this did the trick, immediately and as described. What I didn't understand was that the engine could remain flooded for so long. Plus I suppose I was flooding it anew each time I tried starting it.
I purchased an off-brand saw mainly due to financial reasons, with the intent of trying to mill some lumber for my hobbies. I've had the saw for a few months, (28" bar) and haven't been able to get it started since day one. Fortunately, I really haven't been ready to do any milling until recently when we had 11 trees taken down on our property, including a couple of 80' pines. It was now or never so I began researching and found your video on unflooding the chainsaw. I had assumed I was flooding it every time since I often ended with the strong smell of gasoline. Your video not only educated this novice on how engines get flooded, but showed me a couple ways to clear it up. I did the "tool" approach and removed the spark plug, etc. EVERYTHING you said worked great, plus I now know in hot weather (like here in FL most of the year), I may not have to choke at all. I just finished my first milling cut on an oak log only about 5 ft long. I cannot explain how excited I am to continue my processing and create a little backlog of lumber for future projects. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. (I was ready to bite the bullet and take it to a mechanic who would have gotten it stated but never trained me how to do it right.
You saved me a trip to the repair shop. I went down every route and this was my last try. Sure enough this was it. YES!! Well I learned a lot. How to test a spark plug, replacing the coil, new fuel filter and how to now unflood it.Thank you so much.
After 3 days of cutting down only God knows how many trees...I thought my chainsaw died. Replaced my spark plug & did everything you mentioned in this video, it's working again! Thanks so much for making this video!🙏🏼
Hey Steve, used this video on my Stihl this morning out in the woods. I over-choked it, flooded, and damn thing wouldn't start. My wife thought I was nuts when I placed my saw o the ground and watched a video, but impressed when I got the saw started afterwards. Thanks!
Thank you for your channel and all the time you put into it. I’ve never incurred this problem until today. Couldn’t figure out why and what was going on. I followed you through the steps and now she’s running again like a top. I had all but given up and was planning to take it into the shop. Thank you so much!!!!
Today was the first time my chainsaw has given me any issues starting at all. So I changed the spark plug, the air filter, and the gas filter only to have it continue to fail. I'm so glad that I found this video. It would have saved me about 1.5 hours in time and $25 dollars in parts had I watched it PRIOR to going to Lowes to buy the new parts. Locking the blade and starting it while holding the gas full throttle worked like a charm. Thank you for posting this video. I can't wait to watch your other videos to see what else I can learn.
Huge thank you, worked like a charm. Never even crossed my mind that I flooded it and when you started talking about it instantly thought yep that’s exactly what I did 😅
I don't know if I was flooded or not, but i was getting no combustion. Ran out of time yesterday and did my work with a nice double-bit ax. I put in a new plug and flipped the bar for good measure, and when I got home from work today I took out the plug and pulled the cord to make sure I had spark (I did). Replaced the plug, pulled the cord ONCE with the trigger throttle wide open and it started right up. Thanks so much man! Saved me from a whole week of frustration. Can't wait to get back to the field. btw husky 450

Just got my first chain saw. Stihl 271. Couldn't figure out why the thing wouldn't go. My wife-small logging town girl-says, “Is it flooded?” Next stop: Steve's Small Engine Saloon. So I choked on what little pride I have. This video saved me public embarrassment, and gave me a stiff shoulder. Thanks tons. Great video.
heck yeah did everything he mentioned mine would not start wasn't flooded, holding the trigger and pulled the 28th pull it started. I was about to take it to a friend that does small engine work but seen this video and man it saved the day. Thank You Sir!
Hey! Great basic info and demonstration. Good job . Even though I've used this procedure on different engines, ...I enjoyed your persistence in your pull starting because you knew the outcome of your persistent pulling.....a running engine. Thanks for info and a great presentation! Encouraged me.
My Zomax (Chinese) saw would not start, checked spark-ok, checked Fuel and Fuel supply-ok, I noticed after trying to start it that the spark plug was wet. I nearly gave up on it until I watched your video on unflooding, pulled it about 10 times and away it went. Great series of videos, no BS and plenty of sensible advice. Thank you so much from Ireland.
I had an 090. Most of the time I used the compression release to start it. Sometimes when it was warm I wouldn't but half the time that would result in sore knuckles when it would kick back and suck my hand into the starter housing.
There must be a lot of stuffed stihls out there. This is my second video trying to get some ideas and it was helpful because I needed a good position to hold the trigger and pull the cord. So thanks. The first video I saw had a quarter of a million views and the guy had been in the woods for too long.
I'm relatively new to chain sawing, was slabbing a log in my back yard, needed to stop the saw for a bit, and couldn't get it restarted. I suspected that it was flooded, and so went about doing some other tasks for a few minutes before trying again to start the saw...unsuccessfully. Man, I pulled that starter cord a lot of times. I did this several times before looking to youtube for some help. This was the video that was recommended. After watching the video I started my saw ON THE FIRST PULL! Thank you Steve!!!
Thanks Brother. I've been having problems starting my ms171 and now I realize I've been flooding it. Every time this happened I would put it down and come back. Your starting instructions are better than the manufacturers. Thanks
I just bought my first chainsaw, Stihl MS261CM, and I'm binging on your videos. I haven't even put gas into it yet. Your videos are SUPER informative! Thanks!
I'm 75 and every pull is sacred; it will take a dozen or more to remove the fuel short at the plug gap. I take the easy way out, pull the plug and clear the short and the combustion chamber with compressed air. You might want to wrap a rag around the open plug to catch contain the raw fuel. Usually starts on first couple of pulls. Pabst was my brew of choice a while back. Thanks for the video.
Take your screwdriver/wrench with you always. If an engine is flooded remove the sparkplug, then pull the engine over maybe 5-10 times. reinstall the sparkplug, AFTER blowing liquid gasoline out of its business end. Steve has an amazing arm. I'd be slowing down much sooner than he did.
Just like the oldsmobile I had when I was a kid. The quadra-jet would flood out sometimes if I did alot of short trips. Wedge choke open and floor it while cranking.
A huge THANK YOU from Germany! You just saved my timber cutting class tomorrow, as my Jonsered wouldn't start yesterday. Dealer couldn't figure it out - wanted to send the saw in - which would have left me with no saw for tomorrow. Took my saw back home instead, checked the spark plug - wasn't wet or crusty - checked sparking and decided to follow your advice on deflodding the carb. Nearly took me as many pull-ups as in your video but in the end it started well. I am really happy - cause i learned to help myself with your help! So thank you very, very much!!
I have a little MS 180. It floods if I ignore the starting procedure in the manual and pull 3 times on choke instead of one. Set it down and fire up your spare sitting in the back of the pickup. I always have a spare MS250 and Husky 455 in the pickup. Check it 30 minutes later and it starts easily. I'm a petite cowgirl and can not pull the 30 times this guy does although his procedure should work. My husband gave me all three so I have no excuse to not get the work done.
When I first start a saw for the day I always go full choke until it pops, immediately switch to half choke and pull until it starts. Probably only ever had my 026 flood a handful of times in the multi thousands of starts I gave it. Maybe it works so well because it's early 1990's before all the emission junk got to saws though.
Edit: *This worked GREAT!!* My chainsaw was hydrlocked, took yhe spark plug out pulls very easy. Put plug back in and very hard to pull. Will try this, hope it works.
@@StevesSmallEngineSaloon Cool, this worked. I took the bsr and chain off, removed spark plug and air filter, pulled the trigger and pulled the rope about 40 times (very easy to pull), cleaned the spark plug and air filter and installed. Pulled the rope without any primer pumps and it started on the 5th pull. I let it run for a few minutes, turned it off, yried to start again, started on 2nd pull. Thanks a lot for this video. I noticed this saw starts easier with a really fast pull on the rope, a new spark plug might help. Anyway, Im happy, got a week of cutting trees that needs to be done before spring.
in 30 years, i've never had a problem with my stihl flooding..... Still using the same spark plug too. About dozen pulls to get it going after not running for a extended period of time......
@@robertlangley258 All depends on how many hours it's used. Spark plugs should last a long long time if the saw is running good gas/oil and is properly tuned up. We only replace plugs if the saw doesn't run and that took well over a year or two running them 5 days a week for hours a day logging. Of course we used stihl oil in the gas, so this guy probably doesn't run his saw nearly as often so it's entirely possible that the plug is still original.
STEVE!!!!!!! You are the MAN!!!!! It took me hours to start my chainsaw and I looked like a new guy today when my brother and I were cutting down trees….. I just used your method and it started up right away!!!! I walked away after an hour and it stilled started!!! Great video!!! You just saved me $100-$250!!!! I appreciate you!!!
Hi Steve, great video. I ran into a similar problem with my Husky 555. It seems however instead of hydraulic lock, I am dealing with a vapor lock. This happens after I run the saw and it is hot, then I fuel it up. If I don't start the saw right away, it just won't start. I have even tired to change the plug with no success. If I leave the saw alone and try it the next day, it starts like a charm. What gives? Any tips?
Clean the fens on cly head really good and change air filter I keep my fuel container in cool ice water and I keep my saws very very clean Had to learn the hard way
I like to put them down on a flat surface and put a foot inside the area where the trigger is. I think it is safer than the knee on top. Of course, that is just my opinion man, as the dude would say.
That's the correct way to start a saw on the ground normally....however its kinda hard to use your hand to hold the throttle wide open while your foot is in the loop to steady the saw.
1bottlefed Good point, I push the throttle trigger up with my toes & this does the trick, obviously you gotta take your right boot off 1st unless your wearing flexible shoes. Nothing more annoying than a Chainsaw that won’t start though !!! Don’t forget to put your boot back on afterwards. 😎😀 God Bless
How to unflood a chainsaw? Open throttle all the way and yank on the starter cord till your shoulder falls off. Just kidding Steve. As usual another great vid. You are my go to source for all my lawn and garden power tools.
Damn, Steve. I had two Stihl Farm Bosses that I was 100% sure had issues with their ignitions. I just had a beer after two hours of trying to get them started and deciding to give up. I then watched your video and got not only one but BOTH of these saws started. I was about to lose my mind and you saved me. I wish your video was at the top of the list when I Googled “why won’t my cork soaking Stihl chainsaw start?”
Couldn't get my new timberwolf started (its been sitting a couple months). Inevitably, I flooded the sucker! Knew I could count on ole Steve to straighten me out. Sure enough found this video, tried your technique and the sucker started on the first pull! Had to do it a couple more times and she was running fine as wine! Thanks Steve, you da man!!
Mech Uno Personally, I didn't count how many pulls he gave it, in total or, until it coughed for the first time, but Steve def has some pull in him. I'd like to see him pull my 46 or my 66 like that.
@StateofMind Hey, that's MY exercise up in Central Minnesota!! I take my Echo in 5 degree weather and start cutting away. No beer here; I'm all suited up. I actually feel like I'm doing cardio! Air is super thin at that point.

I recently bought a Stihl MS 271 and flooded it by accident thinking it was cold. I kid you not... ONE PULL and this trick worked. Thank you for saving my saw.
You're Welcome...
You're Welcome...and Thank You...
Steve, I’m always amazed at the number of thumbs down. Whenever we have equipment problems of any kind, we’d NEVER bring it to one of those
negative ‘experts’. We’d hunt for someone with your level of expertise. This was another great, practical and very useful
episode that 99% of us can use.
Many thanks!
Thank You...and You're Welcome...
Dude pulled that thing like a boss. Im probably 15 years younger and would have had an aneurism on the 10th pull.
It's only a 230 with 45cc engine. Not too bad.
@@trevors8577 My Husq 61cc would kick my fuggin ass trying to yank-clear the flood LOL
Was in the woods cutting trees and my saw flooded. Looked this up on RUclips and it worked! Steve’s the best. Thanks
Glad it helped!
me too!!Thank you!!
You're Welcome...
Why do most contractors frown on it? A chainsaw? Gas?
@@joshuaperez2877I'm not OP but I am a carpenter... a lot of guys just think that if you use a chainsaw you're gonna be a REALLY rough carpenter and probably not do nice, clean work -- that may be true in some cases but there is certainly a place for chainsaws in carpentry, and its amazing what you can do with them in certain applications.
Super helpful. Struggled for an hour with a flooded chainsaw. The key for me was to not have the choke out, but hold down the throttle. Thanks!
Nice job!
Yeah I messed around with my ms171 for two days.. new spark plug, air filter, fuel filter, new fuel and oil ect. Knew it was getting spark, and gas on the new spark plug.
Finally held the trigger down and first pull… fired right up
Steve, I have been using chainsaws for 40 years, and I still learn from you. Thanks!
You're Welcome...
A masterclass in Show & Tell. Demonstrating that this method works in even the absolute worst-case scenario is genius. Just unflooded mine--thank you! Subscribed!
Wow, thanks!
once again you saved the day. I’m chainsawing a lot more these days and as soon as i smelled the fuel and it wouldn’t start, I knew it was flooded. Your channel always has the fix.
I unflooded the saw just as you instructed. Thanks man.
Glad to help
I would like to say “Thank You” for providing your information to us all (mechanically inclined or those of us inept). You helped me after I put chain oil into the fuel tank and vice versa. I followed both videos on chain oil in gas tank and flooding and ta’da ... my Stihl chainsaw is functioning again... May someone be as kind as you are to your fans. Cheers 🍻 My local shop quoted me $200 to fix with a 2 week turnaround. I fixed with your directions in 3 minutes after watching both videos.
Glad to help
This helped me out a lot. Spent 2 hours trying to get mine started after it sat for the last 6 months. I was getting frustrated. Got up this morning at 430am, and got it started in 1 min with your recommendation. Many thanks *salute*
Great to hear!
First time ever buying a chainsaw and I genuinely thought it was broken or something. Just tried this and no word of a lie, it started after like 5 or 6 pulls. Great video man, you must have helped so many people with just this video alone. Thank you!
Great to hear!
You're Welcome...
Bingo! After trying to start my saw a dozen times over the weekend, this did the trick, immediately and as described. What I didn't understand was that the engine could remain flooded for so long. Plus I suppose I was flooding it anew each time I tried starting it.
Nice work!
Thank you for making this video. You have saved me hours of down time dealing with a flooded saw. I really appreciate it.
You're Welcome...
You're Welcome...
You saved me a trip to the repair shop. I went down every route and this was my last try. Sure enough this was it. YES!! Well I learned a lot. How to test a spark plug, replacing the coil, new fuel filter and how to now unflood it.Thank you so much.
Glad I could help!

Thanks!
Right on Mike....
You’re a HERO! I followed exactly your advice, step by step, and my saw started up with the exact number of pulls in this video.
Four pulls and I'm done for a minute. Missing those days of just doing what is needed and not giving it a second thought.
Great video. Thanks again
Same. Easier if you elevate the saw so you're not pulling from ground up. Something higher than your knees.

Never even crossed my mind that I flooded it and when you started talking about it instantly thought yep that’s exactly what I did 😅
Glad it helped!
Thanks a million, Steve! This video really helped me out and I got my chainsaw running.
Fantastic!

Thank you Sir for this great DIY video. I figured out what I was doing wrong with my chainsaw. Keep up the great how to video's!
Thanks, will do!
heck yeah did everything he mentioned mine would not start wasn't flooded, holding the trigger and pulled the 28th pull it started. I was about to take it to a friend that does small engine work but seen this video and man it saved the day. Thank You Sir!
That is awesome!
I appreciate all your advise as small engines frustrate the heck out of me.

Love to see that on done an 090. After about the 35th pull, they'd be carrying me out on a stretcher.
LOL, me too...
After my 10th pull, I would be ready to go home.
Just googled an 090. I have an 034AV. You win. The 034 kills me. Yours would be suicide
tubastuff mmmm
I had an 090. Most of the time I used the compression release to start it. Sometimes when it was warm I wouldn't but half the time that would result in sore knuckles when it would kick back and suck my hand into the starter housing.
Beer and chainsaws!! What a great combo!
There must be a lot of stuffed stihls out there. This is my second video trying to get some ideas and it was helpful because I needed a good position to hold the trigger and pull the cord. So thanks. The first video I saw had a quarter of a million views and the guy had been in the woods for too long.
Stihls flood alot because people dont listen on how the master control lever works.

I just bought my first chainsaw, Stihl MS261CM, and I'm binging on your videos. I haven't even put gas into it yet. Your videos are SUPER informative! Thanks!
You're Welcome...
Right on Buddy..
ed burdick yea. Compressed air. When ur in the woods
@@christopherfitch7705 fyi a little can of compressed air to clean electronics should work
Take your screwdriver/wrench with you always.
Country Boy 85 we must have had the same Olds...
Right on Buddy! You're Welcome...
He sounds like my buddy who gave his wife a brand new wheel Barrow and told her it was her new piece of exercise equipment 😳😡🖕🤬🖕😱

Cool, this worked.
@@loafandjug321 I am so happy to hear that my friend!
in 30 years, i've never had a problem with my stihl flooding.....
Still using the same spark plug too.
About dozen pulls to get it going after not running for a extended period of time......
My Stihl floods just by touching it
Use a fuel additive to fix your dozen pulls.
Um, a.....Mick, your still using the same spark plug after 30 years?.......ummm, a......look in the mirror, I think your eyes are probably brown too.

What gives? Any tips?

Good point, I push the throttle trigger up with my toes & this does the trick, obviously you gotta take your right boot off 1st unless your wearing flexible shoes.
Nothing more annoying than a Chainsaw that won’t start though !!!
