I pulled the rope right out of my weed whip this morning. Now instead of bashing it against a tree until I feel better and scaring off my family members I can fix it and look like a hero to all of them. You saved my marriage and my family! Hat's off!
Right on
you need help brother 🤣

Best small engine instructions on RUclips.
Thank you so much David...
@@StevesSmallEngineSaloon hey can you show me the other method
He basically did describe it anyway. Just hold it in place with a screwdriver, put the cord in and tie and then when you remove the screwdriver it'd pull in the cord winding it in.
Steve man you have saved me tons of money. I was a lost puppy till I found your channel. Its guys like you that make this world go around. The knowledge you are sharing has taken years to accumulate. I really appreciate ya.
Thank you so much buddy....
Steve you saved my ass!! My wife was giving me hell about fixing the lawnmower and cutting the grass. No one actually went through the process of rewinding a new rope if yours broke off inside the spool. Thanks a million times!!!!
You're Welcome two million times....
Love your instruction. Never cease to learn something. I'm 76, and not a bad mechanic, but I enjoy watching you. Thanks
Right on George! You're Welcome...
The algo is REAL! This vid came reccomended EXACTLY at the moment I was cussing out my dogs LITERALLY for chewing up the string 😂 such a BLESSING IN DISGUISE & on the Sons day 😮 holy spirits listening like ai GODS 🧘🏽♂️
Thanks for the information. Plenty of folks out there posting on this kind of stuff, but I like your straightforward approach. Being from northern Michigan, I appreciate the subtle Canuck humor. Got my blower fixed, now I'm laughing!
I appreciate that!
I've thanked you before and i'll thank you again... I've been dabbling in the small engine service and i'm self taught from guys like you. I find it a relaxing and sometimes frustrating hobby. You have taught me so much Steve and i appreciate it so much.
Thanks Kevin....
Thank you Steve, I just got a free tiller with a broken starter. The first thing I thought of was you
I have repaired starters before but you took it up a notch. Great program. I'm now a faithful follower, Steve E.
You're Welcome...and Thank You...
Hey Steve. Used this tutorial to fix the starter on a log splitter this morning. Your tip about pulling a foot of rope through first worked perfectly. Excellent content. Guys like you are why I use youtube. Keep up the good work.
Right on Andrew! Thank You...
Hey, Steve. Thank you. My hubby is so busy, our push mower is at the bottom of his to-do list. I do what I can to reduce his list, and one of those is fixing/replacing the pull cord I broke. He got me a new cord, but no time to get to it. Now I'm off to do this and mow the back yard. Fingers crossed I do this right.
Good luck!
Thanks. This did save me money, and hassle. I watched another video that suggested burning a grove in the pulley to help tighten the cord. Your method was much simpler.
Glad it helped
Thank you for speaking Canadian so that I can understand!
You are welcome. That's why I do this!
Wow, I’m so grateful for you! First year working a used tiller on my own in the garden. Rope broke. Such clear instruction. I thank you! Gives me more and more confidence that I can believe in myself and find solutions when things go awry. Plus, you are a hoot and a holler! 🤣😂 Bless you
Glad I could help!
Hi. Steve.
Just a quick add on. These always break at absolutely the wrong time! Mine was just before last years U.S. F1 grandprix! I couldn't get a rope, and mine had snapped right in the middle. As an emergency measure, I used a double length of paracord, it worked well, it got the mover started until Ebay brought my new one.
FYI
Thanks to your tutorials, I stripped, cleaned and rebuilt 2 honda cards, adjusted the governor on one mower and adjusted the valve clearances!
Great videos my friend.
Stay safe.
I've NEVER REPAIR a Lawnmower until today. Yes, the thought of taking it to the repair shop was on my mind. THANK YOU!!! Yes, you've saved me a minimum of $100.
1). I overfilled the oil
2). jammed... mower would not start
3). After draining the oil and taking the plug out.
4). I broke the Pull Rope
5). ***I REALLY was going to take it to the repair guy... NOPE!
6). THANK YOU LORD JESUS!! Repair Everything by watching videos!
7). Mower is QUIETER and works better!!
Not my exact problem, but this tutorial definitely saved me when I am out 10 miles away from the nearest Stihl shop, on a Sunday when everything is closed. This helped me right in the middle of a big job. A lot of people that share the same interests with me love your videos and tutorials. Thanks once again.
Great to hear!
Thanks Steve.
The pull start on my Ferris BGF48K mower broke on a job last week. My service guy wasn't really helpful and the disassembly of the spring and pawls got me a little hung up. Your video and careful instruction helped me get fixed and running again for only about 20 minutes and a new rope! Thanks again!
Right on...
My boy you just saved my day at work !! I ripped the string off of the dirt compactor and the job has to get done .. I was trying to fix it but I had no idea what I was I came across your video and i learned something new god bless you my g
Nice work!
My Mother phoned me and mentioned she was taking her lawnmower in to get serviced for a broken rope. I said dont do anything just yet until I check out RUclips - And thankfully, your video was the first one I came across and it definitely did the trick!!! I thank you and My Mother definitely thanks you👍😉🇨🇦
Right on buddy! You're Welcome...

Saved me some time and money. Just broke the rope on my Stihl blower! My wife thinks I'm a genius now. LOL Thanks Steve for the best Small Engine Repair channel on RUclips!!
You're Welcome...
That worked like a charm. Couldn't believe it was that simple. My pull cord broke just yesterday, just an inch or so, used my old pull cord and now I can get back out there and till up the rest of my garden. BIG thanks from the U.P. of Michigan. Oh by the way, I also subscribed.
Excellent!
I'm watching from Ireland. Thanks for your expertise . Unfortunately, I found your video after I had unwinded the spring and need to connect the spring again 🤣
were off grid and run solar BUT being in northern mn in the winter means.... clouds and snow. today is sunday, that means I make Sunday dinner... was in the middle of prepping pumpkin pie and the sun is no where to be seen... hubby went to start the gen and the rope snapped right up by the pull! ty for the video! turkey dinner and pumpkin pie at our house tonight brought to us by STEVE'S SMALL ENGINE REPAIR lol.... second time u have saved my bacon w your easy to follow and relaxed how to diy vids. Thanks Bro. Have an old G100 Honda 2.2 and was having no luck replacing my broken pull start. Mac's Lawnmower wanted $35. I thought uh, no. Took it apart, learned how to rewind the spring, and now, I know how to re-spool the line properly. So Solly Mac......
Steve out!!! I’ve always been scared to try this, not anymore!!! Thanks Steve 👍👍👍
You're Welcome...
Thank you for the simple explanation. Helped me out. 🍻

What's up Steve I'm Drew from Toledo Ohio :-) I've been messing around with the pull cord on my vintage 3.5 Toro for about a day and a half now and then something hit me.....my wife threw my phone at my head🤪 and I was like oh yeah Steve's Small Engine Saloon on RUclips let me see if he has any quick tip fixes and like a pro I fixed it in less than 10 minutes thanks Steve keep the awesome helpful videos coming my brother stay safe and healthy✌
Right on Drew! Thank You...
At 1st I was like, ok a guy with a beer on his workbench is going to teach me something? Well he did, this method 100% beats how I have been doing it. Not only from the physical aspect, but now I too have a beer while doing it-LOL Great Vid, very helpful!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Amazing. I just did one the long way.. and when I put it back had wondered if there was not a simpler method. You showed it. With amazing clarity and simplicity. Thank you. You are the best in this business.
You're Welcome...
Another great video from the saloon!👍👍
Thanks Buddy..
Great Video! - along with all the others you do. You are a wealth of knowledge and really appreciate what you share and the detailed explanations that you provide. You have saved me many trips to the repair shop.
I appreciate that!
hey thanks for posting this video. had a broken lawn mower cord, brought a new. I followed your instructions. now I'm mowing the grass. you saved me a lot of money.
Right on Buddy...
Steve, thank you for posting these videos. I have watched almost all of them and I have learned a lot from you. Your information is right on the money. Please keep em' coming and I'll keep giving you the thumbs up!
Right on Frank! Thank You...
Wow, great concise and to the point video, thanks!
You're Welcome...
Great straight forward video. Thank you. Cheers
You're Welcome...
This happened to me,, I just took off the recoil starter and took a 3/4 inch socket on my drill, It worked so good I just kept using my "electric" starter. Thanks Steve, I love your channel. My Dad and my Grandpaw both tore down small motors,, this brings back great memories.
Thank you, Steve. My snowblower recoil starter rope broke in February so I used the electric start several times. It’s such a pain to get the cord strung out to my shed that I prefer the recoil starter. Thankfully I found your video today and now I know It’ll be an easy repair.
Great to hear!
If we all gave a dollar everytime he helps us that would be awesome
Right on
I'd wager Steve could retire if everyone he has helped gave $1 per time he helped them. I'd have a couple dollars in that kitty myself. He's one of them fellers that if'n he cain't fix it, it wasn't broke!
I've owned my landscape business for 36 years and been in the business 42 years and never saw anybody repair a starter the way you just did! I can't believe how well your method works! We always just kind of guessed at the length of the rope, how many turns to turn the spring. and then we would wrestle with the knots and threading like dealing with an rabid overcaffeinated earthworm. Thank you so much!
Right on Buddy! You're Welcome...
Fixing a broken rope for my Gen has been a nightmare for me until now.. Thanks for the simplified process Steve. You sure made my day😊
Glad to help
I have struggled with these for years using the screwdriver through the vent hole method. This is SO much easier. I just turned 69 and am not ashamed to say that I am still learning. Thanks for sharing your wealth of skill and practical knowledge.
Excellent!
Steve, awesome video!!! Thank you so much for such a great tutorial!!!
Thank You...and You're Welcome...
Best tutorial ever! Thank you so much!
Thank You...and You're Welcome...
I don't even know why I watch any other small engine tips, this channel is the go too. Steve you are the man! Cheers 🍻 Thank you
Wow, thank you!
Thank you, thank you, thank you. my push mower is mowing again. Excellent instructions.
Great to hear!
Great tip/hack there buddy. Subscribed :) Question: The wife was running the mower (older B&S Classic 35). Tank and carb fell off. Bolts vibrated loose. I put it back together again, but it won't run. At best it fires a bit out of the air intake. I can't figure out what the hell is wrong. Any ideas? If there's supposed to be a rubber O-ring on the carb sealing the carb and intake stud, then she lost it.
Sounds like an Air leak or mislaid O Ring somewhere...
Omg you saved me so much time I had 3 beers lol great video ! Thank you
LOL, Right on...
I just come in to take a look at anything you're up to.... Kinda like a neighbour just dropping into a mate's shed to catch up and spin a story or two or just look at gear. My neighbour went away gold prospecting for three weeks and he gave me his mulcher Briggs Stratton and he pulled it a few times and it barely started for him.... And so next day I gave it a few pulls and it gave a couple of coughs before stopping and next pull broke the start cord.... Love your videos... Neat trick to pull the cord through an extra foot and then knot it.
Another great instruction video, keep up the good work.
Thanks Alan...
An excellent video... Thank You!
You are welcome. That's why I do this!
Last few days I watching your vids gave me more then last few years! Thank you!
Happy to hear that!
Steve I just want to thank you for all these wonderful videos that you’ve been working on with carburetors bridge and Stratton carburetors Tecumseh also for pull strings and anything that you can think of for lawnmowers how to change the oil generators snowblowers chainsaws your channel is very informative and so detailed I absolutely thank you for that and when I was younger I took a small engine repair in high school because they offered that as well as auto body shop and well as we get older the mind is not much of a steel trap as it was back in the day and I love the fact that you take your time with the channel and always have a cold beverage thanks so much for the great videos I just wanted to reach out to you from Pittsburgh saying please keep them coming because there’s always something that I always get myself into and need the informative guidance to get through what I need ... blessings
This video made so much more sense than other videos I watched on this subject. Thanks, Steve!
Great to hear!
"Accidentally break the rope on purpose", funny, Steve! Got to love that.
Right on
You had me laughing when the rope broke, that's my same reaction when one breaks. Then I pop my first beer!
Right on ...
When is it?
This worked for me. I had to make a small modification but my mower is working again. Thank you.
Nice work!
You are THE MAN. Simple easy guidelines with a beer. The negative however and there is always one, I was teetotal until I watched your channel. I thought it was mandatory to drink a beer when tinkering with small engines. Now I’m an alcoholic but my power tools run fine.
Thank you sir now I can't wait to work on a lawn mower I found by dumpster it's missing this part
You're Welcome...
Hey Steve O, just saved me $50 plus & no "stink eye" bud. Keep up the great vids. Al out !
Right on...
Hi! I can't thank you enough. It's always something, you know,? Got the rows all tilled up today thanks to you. Pull chord was just something I never had replaced. Thanks so much. New subscriber here 😎
Great job!
Finally a video of someone showing how to replace pull handle and easy way to string the lawnmower. Thank u.
You are welcome!
Perfect commentary
Thank You...
“...and you’re off and runnin. You’re laughin.” He’s right.
Great video, just what I was wanting to know. And on a pressure washer , none else. The rope busted on my washer today and I needed a vote of confidence to get the job done. Thanks again for your great videos, you crack me up with your scenarios that are spot on!
Thank You...
Ones again Steve you have helped me out I cannot THANK you enough see you soon
Any time!
Well we're all screwed then. 10mm socket? That's always the one that gets lost.
Another great simplified explanation that will help us all.
Thank You...
Your stuff is so good, I've sent links to one of your clips to my small engine repair guys. They're pretty good so I don't think they needed them but it's good to know that the Yanks have someone like you that they can have confidence in. I really enjoy your videos and I think I'll replace my next starter cord myself. Thanks mate and Merry Christmas!
Dude! We used your technique to fix an old old roro tiller and it worked! Kudos 😊
Right on
Generator rope breaks:
Me: Honey the rope broke
Wife: (with stink eye) What are you looking at me for, FIX IT!!!
*(Gets rid of wife)*
Great video! Keep up the great work.
Was able to replace my mower's pull cord this morning....thanks to your video. I appreciate you & the time you took to make the content!
Great job!
Hi Steve, Just wanted to say a BIG thank you. I'm a contractor in England, and your video was the best one I found on this subject and helped me to get back on the green! Cheers Mate!!
Right on Danny! Thank You...
Will 550 cord work?
Probably, as long as it is the proper size... Just make sure you cut it off your wife's parachute and not yours!!!!
Great sense of humor. Love it!
Dude, I've been working in the yard all day, in the hot sun.
Just had a nice cold beer, trying to figure out if I bring my mower into the repair shop or.... do I try and fix this myself...
I"m not even sure if my model is similar to the ones you showed, but I'm just about to open her up. find out and fix it myself !!!
Hope my like and comment helped you out!
Great video, thank you!
I am so glad I subbed a couple of days ago. Our rope broke last night, and now I can fix it myself. Thank you
Glad I could help
I just watched the video and presto! I was able to fix the starter rope on my lawnmover on the first go. Thank you so much for your fast and easy instructions.
Fantastic!
Steve I just did exactly what you said and....presto!
Like magic it works perfectly. Thank you so much for doing these videos. Keep up the great work!
Great to hear!
Excellent video, followed your steps and everything came out perfect. Thanks for your videos. Your suggestions for the beer is right on target as well.
Great to hear!
Thanks very much, thought it was gonna be harder but you made it super easy. Took 3 minutes and I'm back to mowing my lawn. You rock man.
Great to hear!
My generator starter rope broke.
I watched his video.
I did what he said.
My generator works now.
Thanks Steve!
You're Welcome...
Steve, for many of us, is the Dad we never had. You rock bro, thanks again.
WOW! You're Welcome...
Steve you are my go to small engines guy! 👍🙏 Thank you for taking the time to make these videos, you are a money , time and life saver!
Thank you very much!
Man, I could watch your videos all day long! Whether it’s Something I already know about, or something I know nothing about... you are a joy to watch! I hope there is a day when I run in to you at a bar... because the beers will be on me! Cheers!
I appreciate that!
That's what I love about your channel because you go out of your way to help customer & your subscribers saving money. In return you creates great customer appreciation & more subscribers. Well done Steve cheers.
This is the best video out there. You don't assume viewers know a thing. Well done, Sir
Thank you, Steve! The pull cord on my snow blower has broken twice at the knot and I used the screwdriver method to hold it in place. The problem with doing it that way is the tension on the cord is always a little looser than I'd like. Your method restores the cord tension the way it came from the factory.
You're Welcome...
Love your your RUclips videos! Even though this is 5 years old it was super valuable today as all your RUclips videos are. Keep up the great work, I'm having a cold one for you, thanks!
I appreciate that!
Thank you Steve!!!
You saved me in a tight spot. I broke my pressure washer pull cord right before I had 2 customers' cars to detail. I had mine back up and running within an hour. Thanks so much.
Excellent!
I tried your method on a starter which didn't have a place to put the screwdriver through as you mentioned, it worked very well. Thank you!
You're Welcome...
Best teacher on you tube. His videos teach me so much.
Thank You...
Steve you are a life saver. This kind of stuff isn’t my forte but you made that so easy.
Right on Dusty!
Thanks Steve, appreciate the coaching. Excellent job done. You’re very clear in your instructions.
I appreciate that!
Thank you Steve, Here in the UK with an old Qualcast 32, either can't get the parts or Costa Fortuna - do it yourself - without screwing up the spring....worked a treat!!
Right on Brian...
