Let me start by saying I have ZERO mechanical ability. When I told my friends I was going to attempt the replace the stater pull rope, they laughed and I got the sarcastic "good luck". I watched this video 4 times and was certain I could do it. I set up my lap top out side got the tools like Jeff instructed and BAM.......30 minutes later job done and done successfully. $6 and 30 minutes. Jeff saved me both time and money. I went step by step without a single misstep. Great video, thank you so much Jeff. You are awesome and for all those reading, trust me if I can do it you can do it!!!!

A stupendous step-by-step process that left no details out. You, sir, are a great teacher. Even starting out at the beginning explaining the tools needed saved me a ton of time. It made me realize I was missing my 5/16th" socket. So, when I picked up my new rope and handle, I got a replacement socket. I can't thank you enough.

When I saw the rivets, I thought I had a Chinese copy of a B&S with a non serviceable pull string, forcing the consumer to replace the whole assembly. It's been so long since I've worked on one (reliability), I forgot the whole shroud comes off. Good video. Got me where I needed to go.

For me the hardest part of this whole job was threading the rope through the handle. The dang thing would just not go through. I eventually managed to push it through with a thin wire. Great video! Thank you for posting it!

I love RUclips !!! I am a small older female, and I have been able to fix so many things around my house on my own!! Finding a knowledgeable employee at Home Depot, or where ever you get your parts is also a big help.!
I've had my lawn mower 20 years, this will be the second pull rope I've repaired, and last year I bought a new mower which wasn't half as good as my beat up one, so back it went and I repaired the broken wheel, the front wheel drive and the blade!

Thanks. Just did mine in about 15 minutes. Only difference is my rope broke right at pulley. Had to wrangle spring and get everything wrapped and aligned. Instructions were spot on.

Thanks! My ripcord cut off right next to the inner knot and came completely un-spooled. I coiled the cord to see how far to rotate the spinner, pushed a screwdriver in there to hold it, used the suggested melting technique to get it through. After all was put back together it works perfectly again. you're a life saver!

***UPDATE*** Although it has been snowing and raining today, I replaced the rope on my mower. I started it, made a loop around the backyard, and proudly parked it!

The best video on the internet for this repair. Followed it to the letter for my Toro with a Brigs and Stratton engine. Identifying size of bolts saved me an extra trip to hardware store.

Finally I was able to find the video I needed without having to watch hours upon hours of the history of lawn mowers, this was a great and very helpful video. My pull cord just went south on me and I was thinking I had to take it in for repair but now I think I am able to do it myself. Thank you.

This video saved my lawnmower in 2018, and because of another break...again in 2022! Thank you for this!
Thank you so much. Every time before I took the rewind part out to change a cord, with results that the coiled spring went sproing and hours later it finally got back together, after a few dozen choice words. ( LOL) This time it was easy doing it your way. I used a small stiff string tied to a small strong sewing thread tied to the new cord and it worked so well. I put the stiff string thru first and pull the thread and new cord right thru. Thanks again sir!

I've NEVER REPAIR a Lawnmower until today. Yes, the thought of taking it to the repair shop was on my mind. THANK YOU!!! Yes, you've saved me a minimum of $100.
1). I overfilled the oil
2). jammed... mower would not start
3). After draining the oil and taking the plug out.
4). I broke the Pull Rope
5). ***I REALLY was going to take it to the repair guy... NOPE!

Great video! My in-laws had the exact same lawn mower, and the rope broke when I borrowed it. I just spent $5 at Lowe's for a new rope, followed the video, and replaced it in about 20 minutes. The only issue i had was the oil spout came off when i put the engine shroud back on, so i had to clean everything to make sure there was no dirt in the oil tank. Thank you again!

It's been a long time since I had a mower apart, and I always check a tech manual or video to see what I'll be getting into. Your video is very well made. I could clearly see the locations of screws and parts before removal. The differences between my Quantum Briggs and Stratton mower engine and your Craftsman were easily worked through. I especially appreciate you describing twisting the oil dipstick instead of pulling it out. For safety, I cleaned well before trying to twist, and it did pop out. but no debris was present to fall into the crankcase. Thank you!

Ended up having to replace the tank on a relatives 6hp Briggs&Stratton. Took about 5 minutes total. 2 Phillips head screws, 3 - 8mm bolts around the tank and the single 10mm on the side. Remove the fuel line and it was out of there. Quickly. Lol. Noticed it was leaking when I was replacing their pull cord last week, using this vid to follow along. Thanks! Made it very easy indeed.
FYI: I got an Original Equipment Replacement Briggs&Stratton fuel tank from Amazon for $29.96 USD. About $20 cheaper than list price. It comes with a revised spacer for the lower bolt that pops into the hole in the tank instead of just floating freely on the bolt, between the tank and mower.

Thanks, I wasn't looking forward to figuring out what bolts to remove to free the starter pull assembly on my Briggs and Stratton powered craftsman push mower. I actually have a spare mower that someone drilled out the rivets on a starter pull rope assembly and then junked the mower.

Other than a few changes to socket sizes, such as 8 mm instead for a few bolts on my Troybilt mower, this video helped me get the job done so my mower was ready to go! I raised it up on a floor jack and jack stands and sat on a 5 gallon bucket instead of bending over. Great video, Jeff!!

man, just what i needed. I had to take out the spooler as well to cut off the rest of the pull rope. Thanks for the tut. you probably saved me around 130 bucks having the service place i usually go to for parts. Labor appeared to 100/hr. i said to myself, "self, i got this." thanks to you sir. Thanks for the simple explanations and great camera work! I have a craftsman mower just a few years younger than one in the video and the major parts and bolts were a match. Just the cover was a bit different. Took about an hour to complete because I didn't want to lose any bolts. A magnetic dish became very useful to corral all the bolts. Thanks for saving me some $$$$$!!

Thanks for that. I did cut the rivets out on a mower last month and I'm glad I did because the rope assembly was in the wrong position from factory which wore out the rope prematurely. I will do it the way you have shown this time. The mowers are different here down under but the motors are the same. Cheers
I was thinking of doing the same instead of taking apart everything. How hard was it to do? Did you just drill out the old rivets? Is that easier to do than what this video shows of taking apart everyrhing?
@@154g I Think it's actually easier to do as its in the video if you only need to replace the rope. Faster to undo three bolts than drill out and replace the rivets.

Great video, the only modification I would add is if the cord is still connected on the inside of the pulley, cut the knot and connect the new cord to the old cord with a very thin wrap of duct tape and then pull the old cord out and the new one will thread through the hole as well. This is what you do when pulling/replacing electrical wire in a conduit but the trick is to not make the "splice"
too thick so it goes through the hole.

So, if the old cord snapped, how do you calibrate the tension on the new cord? Also, where on the cord to you place the metal object? What is it for BTW?

Yes; read the comments. I suggested a while back ago (maybe a year or so ago) using a crochet hook to pull the cord thorough; then you do not have to cut the metal.
My is totally different I don't have to take nothing off but the three 5/16 bolts and now it won't rewind
