- In this video Bobby of HLSupply teaches how to change your broken starter rope without removing the pulley. He will replace that broken pull cord in just a few minutes.
He is making tis repair on a Stihl 025 chainsaw.
Thanks Bobby. You saved me $50 and the pleasure of proving to my wife I could do it.
Many , many thanks for sharing. Us mechanically challenged folks need all the help we can get. You make it so simple even I can do it. Thanks again.
Stihl 025 manual specifies rope 3.0 mm dia x 960 mm long (9/64 in x 37 3/4in)
THAT is what we needed to know.
My Stihl dealer here in Canada wanted 24$ rope included for this ‘repair’.
Bought the rope for 0.95$ and changed it myself in less than 10 minutes because of your video.
Thank you.
Another very important tip is to make sure the rope bottoms out before the spring does or you'll break the recoil mech.
After rewinding the rope, pull the rope until it bottoms out. Then try to move the recoil pulley CW by hand. It should be able to turn at least a 1/2 turn. If it can't, the rope is too tight.
Took me sometime to understand what you said, but hands on it i realise the spring was too tight, and could lead failure soon. i rewind it with less tension. now the spring effect is perfect. good advice . thanks from India Stihl ms180
@@Pondicherryhotel Glad it helped.
I was running this saw for about 2 hours at about a 30-50% duty cycle ruclips.net/user/postUgkxfQm1wmg0ItKDLavxj1nXtQY9HP7EF504 and it did a great job. I used the lever for the built in sharpener to clear chip buildup out more than to actually sharpen the chain. It managed to cut some hardwood stumps much larger than it's size without bothering the neighbors with hours of 2 stroke noise.
Previous owner put an aftermarket recoil assembly on my used Stihl. After 2 hours of trying to feed a new rope, I've definitely learned that aftermarket and OEM are two very different things. Glad it's done.
One of the most understandable instructional videos I've ever seen. Thanks!
Fantastic thanks, easy to follow, just completed replacing my pull cord on my 14inch STIHL,I cut 40 inch rope used bout 36 , you can actually tell how much you need when the wheels full and pulls and rewinds easily.
The only reason I mentioned the rope is a comment about length! might not have the whole old peice as the dilemma I found my self in !
Cheers!
Thank you for an easy, simple , well explained video.
Why didn't RUclips recommend this video first. I've been digging for a simple fucking video for days.
Thanks for the video. Hardest part was paying $4.31 for a new piece of rope.
Very simple. I stared at my chainsaw trying to figure how to make it recoil. Great video saved me money. I bought the parts from your online store. Thanks.
Perfect. Exactly what I was looking for. Rope broke. Up and running again thanks to this video
Best video explaining this problem. Clear and simple instructions. Chainsaw fixed. Thank you!
YES!! Perfect!! I needed this…trying to change mine right now!!
I like this guy. Important not to lose the bolts :) Good vid, no filler.
Thank you. It worked, plain and simple
Thank you so much for sharing this. You are a great teacher. Easy to understand. May God Bless you..
Excellent demonstration. Saved myself £40
Great video, thank you for showing me how. Now just gotta find some rope.
Great video my friend. Your advice saved me from a big headache. Please upload more of your great videos.
No mention of how to determine length of rope.
Glad I found this video shop told me 1 to 2 days did it in 15 minutes
👍7 years later, you're stihl saving a lot of colourful language 🫡
Thank you very much sir!! I went to use my Stihl MS250 and the saw is about 10 years old or so and the pull cord finally broke. I couldn't find pull rope but I did find some paracord at the local farm store. I watched you video and in less than 30 minutes saw good as new again. Thanks again!!! :-)
Thanks for the reminder ... I've done it before but forgotten ... Merry Christmas and good luck to you.
Brilliant demo. Thank you.
Worked like a charm. Thank you
Thanks, good video, saved me some time & money.
Simple, effective method! Thanks!!
This concise video did the trick for me.
You're the man thankyou so much
Looks simple. Thank you sir..
I agree with the other comment that it would’ve been good to mention that the size of the cord was crucial. I bought one at the local Ace Hardware because the stihl dealership was closed for my stihl 461. It took me a little over half an hour just to try to get the cord through the little plastic hole and back up through. What I finally ended up doing was heating the cord and rolling it until it was small enough to go in and then fishing it out with a dental tool. Much more difficult than I expected in what otherwise is a truly stupid simple repair.
The average person with the average tools would not get past this. What’s funny is the replacement cord was not appreciably bigger either:/
easy in house fix , i am amazed how many people are tormented by replacing a pull cord
Excellent video, thanks
Piece of cake!! Very helpful!
That was an excellent, very clear video. Thank you.
Thanks Very much For This Helpful Info!!!!!!
Missing so many crucial details. Like “measure it out”. How long should we measure?
Really? Ok, I’ll bite, that’s one “crucial” detail, the rest of the “so many” are what?
@@50KPL that you go counterclockwise not clockwise
@@alexangell9226 he's just doing it from the back so the camera can film what he's doing, if your facing the side he's showing us,it's clockwise.
very helpful! thank ya Bobert Treeman
Thank you for this!
Easy enough gotta fix mine now
Up in the mountains right now trying to drop some wood with a buddy of mine trying to be helpful what do you know broke the rope. Glenn silver couple videos pictures and I'm sure I made the right move thanks for the video dude
Excellent , very easy to follow. Thanks.
You just saved me at least $25!
Thank You So Much from my Tired, Frustrated, Grey Haired Ole Heart!!!!!
Worked well. Thanks. Also bought some much stronger rope from H. Depot.
Very good, thank you.
great video and easy to do it yourself. Thanks
For a Stihl 025, what's the rope length? -- he says measure and cut, but doesn't mention a starting length. I'll just go by the guidance below re reaching max rope pullout before the rewind spring maxes out.
Thank you very much. Really helpful.
ThanksBobby .
Great video! be nice to know rope length and size for that saw.
My Stihl 021 thanks you.
you measured out the rope but didn't state how long it should be. Is 40" the recommended length?
This is a great video for a bigger saw. Smaller saws don’t have that much room between the housing and the spool and it’s nowhere near as easy as “line it up with the hole, push it in, grab it with the needle nose pliers, voila”. Could you please do one showing how you get the standard rope into the smaller saws? That’s what I need. I just wasted an hour and shredded the outer part of my new cord trying to fit it in the saw and yes- it’s the same size pull cord the saw came with.
Wish I would have watched this a week ago! Nice job.
Nice job !
thank you !!!!!!
Great video
Ahh.... excellent!
Are there different size ropes?
Thank you!!!!!
Thanks
how long is the rope?
Ok now what do you do if you disassemble the whole spring? I should have watched this beforehand
Can someone explain why my Stihl 038 model tears the starter cord out of my hand when I am attempting to start it. Is there a video on this problem. I believe it maybe out of timing. I need a video on how to fix this problem before I loose my fingers. Ouch!!
Take the starter recoil off & clean it. Steves Small Engine on YT has a video about common issues like this.
Sounds like the pawls aren't retracting properly so when the engine kicks, it grabs the pawls. Could just be dirty or the spring/s may be broken that hold the pawl/s in.
thanx
It's a pity you didn't mention a couple of important points like what thickness rope to use and what length of rope to cut otherwise good vid.
emmams5 agred, what the hell!
measure the old rope
ricky canady don’t always still have it intact
that's the reason you're replacing it right...
ricky canady no shit, what I’m saying is you don’t always have something to measure it against.
You forgot to add blue loctite to the handle bolt.
I have an 034 stihl that's been used maybe 25 hrs it's whole life !
Are they easy to repair when I need to ?
I can do the work but can you get the original parts ?
What kind of rope do u suggest
What size are the bolts
Yep rope just broke in my 220. Needed a refresher haha, how long should the rope be?
Usually it's 95 to 100 centimeters. You can measure your old cord.
How long is the rope
18 years of pulling, the cord on my MS260 broke yesterday. Why can't stuff last longer?
Mine lasted less than 18 months !
How do you do it the hard way ,like taking the clip off and the spring comes apart ?
I figured it out ,but I should have watched your vid before I started.
@@johnjames77 I did the same thing is you did I pulled the clip off and everything else went crazy I'm trying to figure out how to fix what I unfixed
whenever I open my saw it is never that clean on the inside. what your trick? seriously though it was easiest way I have ever rewound a recoil. I seem to do it once a year on this saw I think they should have put a decompression valve on it. hindsight is always 20/20 though
My 290 Stihl chainsaw
How to fix my 290 Stihl chainsaw it's pull rope is good coil spring also but it want catch my fly wheel
Why didn't you say how long the rope was?
I’ve watched lots of these videos and not one person started the chainsaw after the repair😂
You didn't say how long the cord should be
Thanks bobby🙏🙏🙏. ༎ຶ‿༎ຶ
guess what, I need to do the pully itself. Poor pitiful me
Why is replacing a pull chord comparable to open heart surgery?!
I don't own a piece of equipment that is this hard to replace the pull chord
There’s 2 different size pull cords .get at least 4’.Make sure you get the right thickness. My opinion not much of a cord .
Hey Bobby….. wtf
Terrible, not thorough leaves out key factors
