I live a extremely conservative part of Texas and the LGBTQA community does not get a lot of representation out here. We're a small town (400 people in the actual town) and a little over 2k in the High school school. Last year the High School opened a GSA club to provide a safe space for students who identified as LGBTQA or were an ally. Immediately, there was so much hate in the school. Every GSA poster that was put up was ripped down within the hour, and to this day there is only one remaining. The only reason that it is still standing is that it's 15 ft above the floor. I remember my Math teacher whining when the kids who did the announcement talked about GSA. There are certain teachers (maybe 5 that I know of) that openly support kids in the community, and contributed to the club last year (My chemistry and geometry teacher included). However, they get a lot of hate from the student body. I'm pretty sure these factors are why we no longer have a GSA. Only after 3 months of it being a thing, it was shut down. I've been lucky enough to find a small group of friends who identify with a large variety of sexuality/genders. We still face so much negativity daily, but seeing you hang a pride flag in your classroom is encouraging. I just wish I could move to a prominently liberal state and see how much the school systems differ. I think I can speak for the Montgomery Texas LGBTQ+ community when I say thank you.
Thank you for your feedback and story! I'm really glad to know there are some students that could really gain from something simple like a flag. Maybe you could show a teacher you believe in, this video and maybe they would be inspired to do the same. And if students rip down something in the classroom, that is vandalism, which can be prosecuted by the admin, which could make an example that gay-bashing/hatred isn't tolerated in terms of vandalism. That could be a place to start. You could even write an anonymous letter to a teacher with this link or a QR code.
xRea Games remember it's not all about the state. I live in Illinois (an extremely liberal state) but the town I live in is very conservative. We have a GSA club but most people are too scared to join. My towns filled with racist, homophobic, transphobic idiots.

I'm just 14. It's summer now and I have just finished my middle school career. I'm happy to continue my education in high school but I'm surly going to miss one of my most favorite teachers. We do this thing at my school called the day of silence and because one of the many clubs I'm in is Cultural Awareness I for sure was happy to participate. Some say silence has no affect but when you live in a world that relies on communication and social media, it actually has a huge affect. For the day of silence we wear a tag that says "I'm silent for...." then your reason. So when I walked in to my English Language Arts block and seen my teacher, I read her reason of silence to myself and nearly cried of happiness. Of course I had a few kids snicker at my reason, being the same as my teachers (LGBTQ+ Awareness) but those were few and at the end I seen a much more positive impact. At my school nothing was done really if you were called 'gay' or insulted the community at all so by my teacher simply having this reason I felt like I could be myself. I just wanted to let you know that because you did this one simple thing, there are definitely kids in your class(s) that feel loved and supported that you are helping without even knowing it. Thank you so much! We need more teachers that are as open and caring for their students as you are.

apocalypse_gaming1 I’m only fifteen and have more knowledge than you do. Most teachers want their students to feel safe and comfortable while they’re in their classroom. Some students feel ashamed and feel like they won’t be supported. A gay flag just shows them otherwise.
And if you think the rainbow flag is gonna make students more comfortable that's false 90% of students are straight so that means 90% of students are going to be uncomfortable from the gay flag in their classroom it's disgusting and all it'll do is cause discomfort there is no need for a flag that has no belong in our nation or no reason to be in a class

I went to a catholic school for elementary and middle school, and all the teachers at my school were homophobic. They all judged me when I was outed as gay to my grade. Things were terrible and I hated just walking into school. Seeing something like this in a classroom, just as a sign of safety in one of the classes would've made so much of a difference. There needs to be more teachers like you.

I was raised by a gay father who was also a teacher in my local high school. He always had a pride flag in his classroom, he started teaching in the early 1990s in Canada. He wanted everyone to know they were welcome to be their true selves with him. Seeing your flag made me cry. It reminded me how far we've come and how much work we as a community still have to do. I've seen so many people argue that the 'A' stands for ally and seeing you basically say that asexuallity is obviously part of the community made me so so happy. Okay I love you so much. It's honestly awesome and I wish more teachers at my school were like you. We had a day of silence where people who couldn't speak up about stuff (lgbtq+ community, abuse) would sign up and not speak for the day to represent how some have had to live their life like. Yet during this, me and my fellow lgbtq+ friends were often mocked, people came up to us asking how the conversation was going, recording it with their phones and laughing with their cronies. There was a kid that's dumber than a box of rocks that thinks he's so cool because he wrestles that blew a kiss to my boyfriend and then called him a f**. It hurts. Seeing people treat us so differently and cruelly for something we can't change really hurts. So thank you so much for raising awareness
i wanna thank you for being such an amazing person. when i was in school, there really was no place for LGBTQA students. My senior year, my math teacher came out as gay and put an initiative out for a club for us to all come together and feel comfortable with ourselves. Being a part of the club made me feel so welcome and loved for who i am, and i know it did for so many other students, and even some teachers. The fact that you are doing this for such young students is so heartwarming as its so unseen for kids under 18 to really be told that who they are and who they love is ok. You are a beacon of hope! keep spreading the love!

Okay wow, I start college in the fall and I've wanted to major in education for awhile... Then I came out as trans and I was like "nope can't be a teacher, trans people can't do that"... subliminally I had been convinced and let myself believe that I was less than and not worthy of doing what makes me happy. Lately I've seen more and more support for the queer community in schools (or maybe it's just my mindset has changed and I'm allowing myself to see the positives) and it makes my heart happy and gives me the confidence I need to become who I needed when I was younger for future students. Keep inspiring dude.
I'm Asexual and a lot of people say the A stands for alliance. It felt really good when you said it meant Asexual. I've only heard it said that way a couple of times. Thanks for that. ^^

My Significant Other is also Asexual, so I know, second hand technically, the struggles of some Ace's in our own community. I know that some people go out of there way to invalidate, and shove away ace's. I hope that you have never had to experience this, but if you have, I sincerely apologise from the bottom of my heart that some people don't understand how important love truly is in our community. man, I wish i had a teacher like you when I was younger. I'm asexual/panromantic and trans, and in school, while I wasn't bullied per say, people just tended to avoid me, and it would have been so wonderful to know that at least one person wouldn't judge me, at least one person would see me as just another human rather than "oh that weird gay kid" the year after I graduated high school, my high school finally started a GSA and i'm just so glad that kids in that school now have a place where they can feel safe to be themselves.
My parents would take me out of that school right away

This is great! Only thing to correct is that T stands for both transsexual and transgender. Also that trans women had a lot to do with the lgbtqa movememt in SF in the 70s. Everything else is a-okay and awesome!

He was asked by his friend Harvey Milk back in 1978 to create a symbol of pride that would replace the awful, negative Pink Triangle that the Nazis had assigned to all Homosexuals during the war to identify them. Then later the Nazis would arrest them, process them and put them into the hard labor death camps. Mr. Baker chose the Rainbow, beauty created by nature itself. All six colored stripes are symbolic and represent what every Gay person is entitled to as a Human Being, the same as Straight People. Like you stated in your video here are the meaning of the colors:
Red = Life, Orange = Healing, Yellow = Sunlight, Green = Nature, Blue = Serenity and Harmony, and Violet = The Human Spirit of Survival

My children attend a very progressive school in Southern California, where they are very open and accepting on this topic. They welcome all backgrounds, ethnicities, sexualities, etc... I'm very thankful our kids have that option and I can't imagine sending them anywhere else. You are doing the right thing by spreading that message and I hope more follow your lead. I respect the courage you have by doing this with the possibility of backlash from the community and your administration. 👌

I'm just out of highschool and I still wish I had a teacher like you .I'm apart of the community. I been going threw a lot and not just with my identity but in general .I was the "weird resource kid" ever since I was in 4th grade .I only had 2 friends threw out elementary and now that I'm done with school for a little bit I just want to be alone ,even though I did make some more friends in highschool, and now my grandparents want to get me on disability for my ,and I do apologize for this word choice, shitty memory and how I want to be isolated all the time and my low self worth/esteem .so even though I had and still have problems I think that having a teacher like you would have helped me appreciate myself

I live in Mississippi and this is... so beautiful to see. I want to form a GSA here in Corinth Mississippi for the sole reason of having that support, protection, and community but I would have to get a teacher's recommendation and I think It's gonna be hard for me to bring myself to ask one and come out to them all at once.
Well, lets think, do you know other students that would also want to form a GSA? And do you know of any teachers that seem to be more liberal? I imagine history teachers might be a good place to look first as they teach things like this, or a current events class. Another idea, I know I love inspirational quotes and posters and flags, if a student came to me asking: "I have this idea for a poster...would you put it up if I made it?" and if the idea where something more liberal or maybe like a quote from Ellen, or if it were like a US history teacher and the quote was from Hamilton the musical. (Lin Manuel Miranda is gay) those could be some actions you could take that might not require a big step of coming out. OOORRR, you could consider taking a giant leap of courage and give yourself permission to be yourself in the face of we'll say 'disagreement' and just ask. You could also ask teachers if they know of any other teachers that might be interested in starting a GSA, if you don't ask them directly, you may get a less confronting response. comment back to let me know what you end up doing or not doing. I'd like to think all educators are in it to support youth no matter what, and I would imagine, at worst, you might ask, a teacher would say, no I don't know anyone that might be interested, and if they are homophobic, that could change your relationship, but I don't think they could get away with outwardly discriminating against you.
Actually, I'm taking a public speaking class and the topic was something I could do to change the school, area for the better... and I talked about forming a GSA in front of the entire class. Frankly only a couple of my classmates were interested but I think it counts more because they're big supporters. I do know a history teacher that is pretty open minded so I think it'd be a good idea to talk with him, thanks for the suggestion. I actually made this little card for a prototype kinda thing, it had a quote from Steven Universe on it, a rad show kinda depicting gay relationships. I never showed it to any teachers but I did show it to some people who found interest in the idea. Thank you so much; I'll give it my best shot!
- Also about the outright discrimination thing, a teacher got fired last year for calling another gay student an "abomination" so I guess that's good? I mean I hope the other teachers at least learned.

Hi!! I'm so glad that I stumbled upon your channel + videos. It makes me super happy to know that there are educators out there who make it a point to accept all types of students. I just recently graduated high school and would've loved to have a teacher who took it upon themselves to educate themselves on LGBTQ+ things.
As a queer student it was hard but I think that the struggles that I went through shaped me into the person I am.
One thing, the T means "transgender". Transexual is an outdated term and the Q means Queer! Questioning is also outdated.

Thank you... I know I always worried and make sure I wasn’t doing something that could be perceived as gay. I didn’t come out until a few years back even at work (clinic/hospital) I was still not out and once I saw these safe spaces marked with the rainbow flag It felt like a that heavy weight on my shoulders had been lifted and even as a patient I was able to talk to my mental health provider. I know that student that was like me in school feels like he doesn’t have to worry about that weight in your classroom and can focus only on learning. I love you for what you have done.
Asexuality actually isnt apart of the LBGTQ+ because it is a group of people who were mostly discriminated against. Asexual people mostly weren’t disrespected, this isnt supposed to offend anyone though. Also, the LBGTQ+ community is a group of people whose sexuality can love the same gender, or more. Just a quick lesson, not to offend anyone.

I wish you were my teacher. When we were talking about politics and whether we would be a Democrat or a Republican, the pro-gay questions we're not allowed to be answered on the form and the teacher told us to scratch them out. I looked at my bisexual friend and my straight friend she came over and hugged both of us cuz she knows that both of us aren't straight. Both of us felt so out of it. Like we aren't accepted in our own School. They wanted to give us a safe environment to feel ourselves, but I request we walk in they say that you have to be like this. The school found out about one of my other friends and actually called their parents instead of waiting for their own child come out to them first and her parents try to change her. We all breathe the same air just because someone who isn't straight breaths out doesnt mean the air is toxic... and on the factor calling something gay as a negative. My teacher said that once and I lashed out on him. I slammed my books down and said look I'm done with everyone saying oh that's gay as in something bad cuz it's not bad it's a way of life and nobody has control of it nobody should call it something like that. It's not like we chose who we like. It's not like we chose to want to be opposite gender. And it's not like being gay bisexual pansexual polysexual lesbian gay trans asexual anything like that it's not a bad thing. And to me it's an amazing thing that people get awards for being in lgbtq icon it's amazing that we have our own flag. Back then everyone saw being gay as a bad thing.... sorry this comment was so long I just needed to rant
